2016 APCT Semifinal and Final Round Discussion Thread - Current Character Chaos

Well it's been a wild ride, but the tournament is almost over, everyone. Enjoying the campaigns? Liking the posters? Still trying to crack the bounty vote code? Sneaking into the mod's table yet again, I'm MetaMario, and I'm your host again!

Let's cut to the chase.

So we have four characters - Sanji, Nami, Neko, and Carrot. I decided to use Random.org's random number generator based on their debut chapter:

-Sanji debuted in chapter 43
-Nami debuted in chapter 8
-Carrot debuted in chapter 804
-Nekomashi debuted in chapter 809

Now because I don't want to be here all night, let's mark Carrot's number as 80 and Neko's number as 81. Let's run the generator from 1 to 100!

First number!

Sanji vs Nekomamushi - I was hoping this would be the Finals matchup; Neko's gonna be a tougher opponent than Carrot or Nami but given Sanji's surprisingly large victory over heavyweight Jinbe he's got this cat in the bag.

Carrot vs. Nami - Ehhh, Carrot just seems to have more staying power, even if both of these characters will probably get thrashed in the finals.

Whitebeard cinched 2010, right during the peak of Marineford, and the final battle of 2014 was Barty vs. Cavendish. Being in the current arc doesn't automatically mean you win, but it gives you a lot of momentum.

Definitely voting Sanji against Nekomamushi but Carrot vs Nami is tough I love Nami but I'm really digging Carrot as a character. I might need to let campaigns decide this one.

I like Nekomamushi way more than Sanji, but I feel urged to vote Sanji for reasons unknown. I hate Nami, so Carrot is an easy vote for me.

No, Sanji will default and let Nekomamushi win because which ever male wins their round will have to go forward and fight either Nami or Carrot. Sanji never fights a girl, and he knows that Nekomamushi wouldn't cause harm the girls to win either.

I don't think its peer pressure. I guess its more so that this is Sanji's only (and I mean only) chance to win. Catviper (might) be in the same boat, but I feel less urged to vote for him (in spite of his awesomeness) because I don't want a new character to the take the throne again like Barto (I voted for him all the way except once I think) did last year.

I suppose my desire for Sanji to win is out of a desire to keep the tournament winners victories fresh.

Naw nami is much more likely to ride a wave to the quarterfinals again than sanji

That's really not a good argument for any straw hat. At least for Sanji we can assume never will the series be as focused on him as it is now, so it's his best chance. There's no reason to think Nami won't have any greater presence in future.

I suppose that's true, although I feel like the chapter is closed on Nami. Guess it's just her swing of luck, because she usually barely loses to someone a little more popular like Croc, Robin, Usopp, etc.

In the same vein, Zoro's another SH that always makes it far but never can close the gap. Maybe he'll get lucky next year if we're at Wano =3

For me the biggest thing against Nami is that she hasn't gone back to the epic thief skills she had early on, which were what I liked the most about her.

But hey, we thought Sanji was condemned to nosebleed gags and being useless and look, he gets an arc all to himself. So who knows, others may yet reobtain former glory.

So far Luffy, Franky, Robin, and Usopp are the only Straw Hats to have ever won a tournament. Nami, Zoro, and Sanji have their work cut out for them, but Brook and Chopper are gonna need some kind of game changer if they're ever gonna win. (Chopper in particular usually loses first, probably because Oda dialed up his cute factor and naivety)

Will all of them be a champion before the manga officially ends? That's the real question.

The strawhats are always going to have a chance to win the tournament they don't need an arc focused on them just to win. Ussop, Robin and Franky didn't need it to win, all you need is to be a cool character and have a bit of luck.

Very true, but Robin probably worked the hardest for her win - Usopp and Franky both won in sequential years when the events of Water 7/Enies Lobby were going on, where both had that push because of their relevance.

Brook frequently seems to get to about the quarterfinals. He got out fairly early this year (I don't remember who beat him) but I feel like he just needs a little bit of a spotlight to get to the finals.

Zoro usually does better to but he got rolled over by the Ryuunosuke train. Once he gets back to being a bit of a dork he'll have a strong chance.

Nami's done really well this year. She's gotten a little more focus from the manga but hasn't done anything particularly great. I think she overachieved.

Chopper…yeah. Chopper needs a big shakeup to have any sort of chance to go deep.

Nami's in the same position that Sanji was in for a really long time, just like Noq said, annoying-nosebleed Sanji. Nami's just fanservice boobs girl right now, and I await her triumphant return to awesomeness. When Oda elevates her to above fanservice level, I'll root for her.

Maybe oda will throw a huge twist and have nami be the star of wano and have parentage explored there, would be interesting if one of her birth parents was from wano, and imagine if she has a kind of extended family there of orange haired samurai lol
