When you read the manga, do you imagine some of the voices? I kind of use them, as for the ones I haven't heard in the anime, I just imagine them sounding how I think. Like Enel, I hear him sounding like a complete ass.
A question for all manga readers.
-
-
hmmm well it depends like when i usually read i kinda imagine funimations voices in my head but not really. like for robin and sanji like they sound the the japanese version but im reading in english
-
…Funimation's? You mean 4Kids? because I always imagine the Japanese voices, only they're talking in English. I was once seriously distrubed when Dub Usopp's voice came into my head Oo!
-
no funimations. as in i thought funimation was gonna dub one piece >_>
oh and i know what u mean bout the japanese thing too,
japanese voices i translate
sanji
robin
nami
foxy
mr 2
aokiji (sometimes)
bearmask
mr 3
crocidile

One time, I heard Sanji's dub voice in my mind! Trust me; it's scary. T_T
-
Oddly, for some reason Sanji's dub voice has popped into my head more than once, to my horror. This only happened when I read the Viz version…
But usually when I read the manga, the voices I hear are completely unique, my mind just makes them up. Sometimes I hear English versions of the Japanese voices.
I still haven't heard Enel in the anime. I always imagined him to sound like quite the punk. I have a feeling he'll sound completely different in the anime. ;)

I always pictured him as sounding kinda spacy, like he loses interest half-way through whatever it was he was saying, but finishes it anyway.
-
I'd love to see Eminem voice Eneru.
-
I find my self singing the music…(does this male sense) like when they wanna do something heroic theres this music that always plays ( i think its called the fight you cant premit)
-
Hehe, this doesn´t happen only to when I read One Piece, it´s no matter what I read I always hear the character´s voice inside my mind. And I´m sure that many others do so aswell that´s where imagination comes into play. And that´s also the reason when people say "that voice doesn´t fit this guy". How can they say that it doesn´t fit when they haven´t imagined the voice for themselves before?
Same thing with movies that are based on books. Like when people say "I´ve never imagined Galadriel to look like that" for the LotR movies or "that´s not how Marvin was supposed to look like" in the Hitchhiker´s Guide to the Galaxy movie.
I´m really curious on people reaction when they hear Enel´s voice for the first time. I didn´t like it much at first but thanks to the voice actors brilliant portrayal of his YA-HA-HA!! laugh he grew on me. Well we should get there soon. :steve:
-
No, not really. Or all the voices sounds like me, for some reason.
-
I don't imagine clear voices while reading, but it's all kind of depending on the pictures and text at the time. Still, yeah, my imagination cooks up some things.
It very rarely happens that I consider a voice from the anime so good and fitting I'll place it into my manga reading. But, say… Chimney is an example of that happening. At such times the voice is so perfect I start to associate them with the characters themselves.
Like I said, though, that's very rare. I usually prefer the own voices in my head (Something's wrong about that sentence) than anything the anime comes up with.
-
When I read novels, I can sort of picture the whole scene in my mind and perhaps hear them talking. For manga though, I get that sometimes, but not usually.
-
of course I do ^^
I guess you miss something when you aren't… -

It's true that a lot of it is personal. It's still possible to be poorly cast, though. Like for instance, I don't care what anyone says, Sanji and Usopp are just WRONG in the dub.
And when it comes to movies, sometimes the characters are depicted in ways that contradict how they are described in the book. Like in LOTR, it clearly says Boromir and Faramir have black hair, but both of their hair color is blondish in the movie. :/ But I loved Sean Bean and David Wenham anyway.

Yes, I Do. After Watching The Dub/Playing The Dubbed Game, The Dubbed Voices Are In My Head When I Read The Manga, And I Sorta Have To Shake Them Out XD;
But Um,
Voices I Picture:
Luffy-Just A Normal, Plain, Simple Voice. Nothing Special.
Zoro-Very Deep, And Slightly Just SLIGHTLY, Raspy.
Nami-Like A Girly-Girl, But Not When She's Being Sierious.
Usopp-See Luffy.
Sanji-A Raspy, Normal Voice, With A Certain Tone To It. It's Perfect.
Chopper-Pretty Much Just Like The Japanese Version.
Robin- Sometimes With An Arob Accent. Sometimes Without. XD
Morgan-A Very Deep Manly Voice.
Helmeppo-A Snobby, Brittish Accent, That Sounds Like A Girl.
Buggy-Pretty Much Like The Dub.
Kuro- Just Like The Japanese Version. A Lot Like Sanji.
Jango- A Surfer Dude Type Voice.
Krieg-See Morgan.
Gin-See Usopp
Arlong-Just Like The Dub.
Smoker-Just Like The Dub, But More Raspy.
Tashigi-A Verry High-Pitched Girly Accent.

-
this is y i avoid watching the mangas anime at all costs…the voice acting will 99% of the time ruin wat i think the character should sound like
-
I do that everytime I read a manga. I usually imagine a character with a voice I've already heard in another cartoon. I've read almost all the manga before I first heard any of the Japanese voices, so it became very hard to imagine the characters with any other voice other than the ones I first imagined them with. And it's usually some voice that's weird as hell coming out of that character's mouth. Here's a list:
Luffy, Kuina, Vivi, & Tashigi=actually kind of close to the japanese version.
Zoro=Like Captain Blue when he said "Right over here" in the beginning of the first Viewtiful Joe game.
Nami=That stupid valley-girl voice from the dub. (Originally I imagined her with the voice of Bulma from the DBZ dub).
Usopp=When I first saw Usopp, I thought he was a girl(O.o) because of the hair and eyelashes. So I imagined him sound like a deep-voiced girl voiced by Tress Macneile (A voice-actress who does a lot of work on The Simpsons). Even after I learned Usopp's male, I still imagine him with that voice.
Sanji=Imagine that australian mouse from the Rescuer's Down Under with a little british in his voice.
Chopper & Robin=Same as in the Japanese version.
Shanks=Leonardo from the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoon.
Captain Morgan=Michael Clarke Duncan.
Buggy the Clown, Koby, Helmeppo, Kaya, Igaram, & Butchie=same as in dub.
Kuro=Alan Rickman.
Kreig=Anyone remember how Ganondorf sounded in the Super Smash Bros. Melee game?
Mihawk & Nero=Antonio Banderas as Puss-in-Boots.
Arlong & Tileson=Eggman from 4KIDS' Sonic X dub.
Smoker, Cabaji, Ace, Kohza, Wiper, Ohm, & Pauley=Your typical low-voice done by Steven Blum.
Mr. 0 & Hilruk=Tony Jay.
Mr. 1, Gaimon, & Yasopp=Hulk Davidson from the first Viewtiful Joe game.
Mr. 2=A man trying to do a high-pitched girl's voice.
Mr. 3, Mr. 9, Mr. 11, Eneru, Merry, Ironfist Fullbody, Prinprin, Cobra Nefertari, Van Auger, Spandam, Jerry, & T-Bone=Sort of a british accent. I remember hearing this voice out of some old man from a Felix the Cat movie.
Mr. 4=Slowpoke.
Mr. 5=Close to the dub.
Wapol=Similar to Yoda(O.o).
Miss Doublefinger=Rita Repulsa.
Bellamy, Pearl, & Wanze=James from the Pokemon dub.
Lucci & Franky=?
Morbran Cricket=Patty Cook in the dub minus the accent.
Jango, Sattori, Hottori, & Kottori=Blaine from Pokemon.
Gedatsu, Aojiki, & Foxy=The Looney Tunes vampire.
Siam=That german professor from the Tick cartoon, minus the german.
Ben Beckman=Brad Garrett.
Boodle=Garlic Jr. from DBZ.
Patty Cook=The chef from the Little Mermaid.
Higuma the Bear, Colonel Nezumi, & Shura=Skeletor from the original He-Man & the Masters of the Universe cartoon. -
I kind of skimmed through the latest chapter, and I imagined Kokoro talking with a heavy southern accent for some reason. Probably because she reminds of my old boss.
-
The voices I imagine in my head for the characters…pretty much all of the male characters sound like my own voice and all of the female characters sound the same in my head. I lack creativity XP
-
i do the exact same thing mumbo XD
-
I always imagine a country accent for Ace for some reason. It must be the whole "It's mah pride and joy." thing. I know I've heard that somewhere before.
-
No voices. It's the best way to go.
-
I was reading after watching the dub, and Usopp's dub voice kept popping into my mind when I saw him talk!
-
I try to put the Japanese voices into my head, but sometimes the dub voices try to shove them aside. If that happens, I just imagine other VA's doing the voices. It's much easier when it's characters who haven't appeared in the dub yet.
-
No voices. It's the best way to go.
Huh? How do you read dialogue without any voices accompanying it? That is totally impossible for me. But then, it's also impossible for me to hear music without seeing colors either. I have a synaesthete brain.
-
…But then, it's also impossible for me to hear music without seeing colors either...
Seeing colors while hearing music? Never happened to me or at least not that I was aware of.
However I put words I just hear in context with color. I associate every letter with a color and when I hear a word that starts with a certain letter then the entire word has the color of the letter in my inner eye. The letter "t" I always see as green so if I would just hear the term "term" it would appear in green written down in my mind. Of course this just works when I´m hearing and not reading words.Yeah I know it´s freaky.
-
I always imagine the voices just like how their original is, but if I never liked their voice in the first place, then I'll imagine another one that fits his/her appearance and character.
-
when i read one piece, i imagine no voices, no color, no music. that's it. i just think: "damn they better not mess up the anime, it'll kick ass".
-
Yeah I know it´s freaky.
Not really, I have the exact same thing. Though with numbers and days of the week too, for some reason. For example, ''3'' is red and ''Monday'' is yellow.
-
@Mog:

was monday, october 3rd orange? (

these are the voices I picture:
Luffy: Original JP voice (Speaking in english)
Zoro: Same as above
Usopp: Same as the above
Nico Robin: same as above
Sanji: Steven Jay Blum's voice (Spike from cowboy bebop and mugen on Samurai champloo)
Chopper: Original JP voice (Speaking in english)
Nami: For some odd reason, Melfina's dub voice from Outlaw starEnel/Eneru: I picture him sounding like dub Sanosuke from Rurouni Kenshin
Captain Foxy: A county dracula/chocula voice
Mihawk: Steven Jay Blum using a different toneI have not read the manga forawhile, but that's what I remember picturing…
-

Yeah I know it´s freaky. :laugh:Both sensations are varying forms of Synaesthesia. Only a very small selection of the population are born with it.
Hearing voices while reading stories isn't necessarily related, though, that's more of an association. But I can't fathom someone reading and not hearing ANYTHING in their minds while they read. It seems just as impossible as talking and not hearing yourself (unless you are born deaf).I'm trying to think of who I can compare to how I heard Enel. He sounds like…a young, evil insane guy. XD
BTW, I first looked at a OP manga before I saw the anime, and seeing that Luffy was only 17, I thought of him sounding like a 17 year old would sound, so he surprised me in the anime...however, I actually like Tanaka so much, that my perception changed.
-
Both sensations are varying forms of Synaesthesia. Only a very small selection of the population are born with it.
Interesting. I always thought everybody had the same thing, due to asking several family members… And now it seems to run in the family. Weird.
Well, thanks for bringing that interesting bit of utterly-unknown-to-me information for me to enjoy. Now I can tell people I've got Synaesthesia and they'll think I'm seriously ill or something. Ka HA.
And yeah, I've had cases of changed perception too. The aforementioned Chimney is an example, and for some reason Nami was way different to me before I saw the anime. Though, she still doesn't sound exactly like her voice counterpart to me… Hey brain, what's up with that?
-
@Mog:
Interesting. I always thought everybody had the same thing, due to asking several family members… And now it seems to run in the family. Weird.
Yeah, I used to think it was something everyone had, because when I was a kid, my dad and I talked about it, and my best friend was the same. My mom doesn't see it, though, and my sister didn't inherit it.
Btw, I can't hear Franky's anime voice when I read the manga if I tried.
He just…doesn't sound like that to me. I have no problems accepting any of the other character introduced in W7, although I imaged Kaku to sound very different.
-
what's really freaky is listening to the same cd while reading a book. then each time you hear or listen to the cd again, you have flashes of the book that appear in your head. it happened just once to me but after that i never tried to do it again coz the book was really sad and the cd was one of my favourite album.
so each time i was listening to the music, i felt sad… creepy, really.
-
Pretty much you either put a voice with it, or you use your own for everything. When you think about it - what is thought but the transfer of information in your own head. So for the most part, Luffy sounds like Japanese Luffy, Nami and Robin sound like their Japanese equivilents, and everyone else sounds either like me or a generic female voice.
-
Some of my voices keep sounding like the dub version, as it's all I've currently got (grr…), but I always try to put out even the slightest hint of the Sanji and Usopp dub voices.
So it's easier for me to come with character voices I haven't heard yet. ^_^
Though I must admit that the voice I had for Chopper wasn't just off... it was horribly wrong. It was probably the kinda thing you'd probably have expected from 4Kids (more wierd than it is cute). Now you can also slap me for thinking that.
Oh yeah, I also animate the fight scenes in my head. :P
-
I keep imagining different voices for Aokiji. When he first appeared, he sounded black in my mind. But, as I read on, he sounded alot like Batman to me. I have no idea why, though.
-
But, as I read on, he sounded alot like Batman to me.
He's really Mr. Freeze! :D

Hey, you specifically asked for it. -
I'm at Water 7, and some voices are just weird to me.
- Iceburg: Normal-sounding
-
Hi.. Here's a question that's been bugging me.. Remember in the manga, when Luffy, Zorro and Nami went to Jaya to get information on how to get to Sky Island?
What I don't get is why when the pirates there started beating up Luffy and Zorro, they didn't fight back?
-
@kashew:

It wasn't worth of it - much like Shanks left Higuma alone.

This post is deleted!

More voices:
- Paulie: Ugh..Yami Yugi from the dub
- Franky: Bender from Futurama
- Hattori: Towelie from South Park
- Kaku: Adam Sandler
-
Thought I might add some more voices
- Calipha: Riza Hawkeye from Fullmetal Alchemist
- Spandam: Haven't come up with one
- Kid Iceburg: Ed from Fullmetal Alchemist.
-
It wasn't worth of it - much like Shanks left Higuma alone.
Oh I love that analogy! I understood Luffy's reasons, but I had never thought of it that way….thanks! :D
