Also I just think Ado is an amazing singer and I have no problem with them trying to push her with this movie lmao. Everyone should hear her voice, even those who choose to watch the dub so… I ain’t mad at it.

First day box office (well really the Thursday preview showings) are here. Looks like it’s off to a decent start - $1.6mil. Although it is noted that the sum is lower than DBS Super Hero and Jujutsu Kaisen 0 before it. Super made $4.4mil first day, while JJK0 made $2.6mil first day. If I remember correctly, Demon Slayer Mugen Train made $3.8mil on its first day as well. So that should give a pretty good indicator on where OP stands now in the US among these other anime giants.

Still, much better than Stampede and Gold, lol. But of course, anime films are vastly doing better nowadays as a whole.

Since I had been gone from this forum for several years, I never got any of ya'lls takes on the Raftel and Laugh Tale issue I assume ViZ and Funimation went thru. I'm curious if they'll exclusively use Laugh Tale now. Or alternate between the two. What do ya'll think?

Both have changed it to Laugh Tale and clearly have no intention of using "Raftel" again; even in a flashback to when Crocus first told them about the island the dub retconned it to him referring to it as Laugh Tale

I was curious what the last My Hero Academia movie did and I was surprised to see that it didn’t do nearly as well as Demon Slayer, JJK0 or DBS SuperHero. Given how popular My Hero is in the states, I figured it’d be standing with them but it’s definitely a good degree lower in money made here so maybe Film Red can beat that at least.

Still surprising, I thought My Hero was huge in the states.

Looks like reports are already indicating that Film Red will be one of the lower earning Crunchyroll releases - with $8-10mil being the new forecast. Certainly better than previous OP movies but… sigh… already that statement is declaring One Piece once again disappoints when it comes catching eyes in the states compared to those other releases. And with way more advertising too.

Goddammit, America.

Well, that was basically a studio trigger movie. I'll give it another try tomorrow before I post my thoughts, but this is the worst of the last few for me, at least on first viewing. Hoping it can at least surpass Stampede on my second viewing tomorrow.

Sorry to report that I was one of two people in my IMAX showing. The other dude was 40+ and suspiciously riffling through his backpack in the back row for most of the film.

Interestingly, Red's UK release is a bit different to Stampede's, presumably down to Anime Limited distributing this one instead of Manga Entertainment. Red seems to have a lot more showings and there are more subtitled screenings than dubbed ones. It's anecdotal, but I've also noticed that my subtitled screening tomorrow is much busier than the dubbed Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero screening was in a similar 'time slot'.

The movie is doing fine. It already surpass the gross of Stampedes' limited release run. Since I already figured the movie isn't going to be on the level of Dragon Ball or Demon Slayer.

@Sano The press releases and people in general are not going to look at that, given how Stampede basically made peanuts here. Overcoming that is no big deal. They’re going to look at how it stacks with other Crunchyroll releases and… it just ain’t stacking up, unfortunately. Which is frustrating. I really thought the good promotion would get it closer to them. Maybe not DBZ big but at least close to JJK0….

I was hoping I'd be able to use the one member of my main friend group that actually likes one piece as motivation to go see Red in theaters, but he's not planning to go. Says he's not a fan of the movies. That's gonna make it hard to get me to go check it out myself, but we'll see. Odds are I'll put it off and then forget to go and then buy the physical release whenever that happens. Theaters are just completely not my thing.

I'm pretty much waiting for the home video release of Film Red until I see it. Since my town's theater close down during the pandemic and never reopen. And the nearest place that showing the movie is pretty much a hour away

For how France and Spain were able to dub them, idk, but seems to me like licensed music getting dubbed is just not something we will get here in English.

This is all fine and very true, but also just fuckin dub the fuckin dub. It’s off-putting as hell when a character suddenly switches languages and actresses mid-scene seven times in two hours.

Idk about that. I only listened to one song before going in, and I came out an Ado fan. She’s a very good singer, and some of the later songs are legit great.

Personally, I think it’s wonderful that a OP film made over one million dollars in the states on opening day. That’s decent for an indie movie, good for OP, and at least okay for anime.

Already stating that OP is giving CR lower numbers than the last few releases. If it was just Dragon Ball, it wouldn’t be a big deal because obviously DB is a monster here in the states and nothing can compare. But the fact that it’s doing worse than friggin JJK0, a new IP essentially, that shit bothers me.

I mean, neither of you are wrong. The truth is that the film’s first day wasn’t great. It should be more competitive with JJK and DS, if not DBS. But that’s literally just the first day and OP is known to struggle in the states. So, y’know, mixed news. Good for OP, bad relative to others. Let’s wait and see what the weekend holds, since I think Thursday showings were only subbed (at least in my area). The first dub showings should give it a boost, at least, before those quickly peter off.

Dragon Ball is just Dragon Ball. It's popularity is on a totally different level then One Piece and that's fine. Not everything to need to be mega popular like Dragon Ball and Demon Slayer. You worried too much about this stuff. One Piece is going to fine over here. I mean seriously, it got 24/7 channel on Pluto tv, which just added 400+ more episodes recently and from what I know a lot of people do watch the show on Pluto tv channel.

So i went and saw the movie yesterday expecting to only see a handful of people but was shocked that it had a pretty good turn out everyone's reaction to Shanks and Law were awe inspiring. There was a funny bit towards the end where people had grown tired of all the singing lol

Combined with its Thursday showing, that’s about 6 million… so… honestly it might make even lower than the estimated 9 million weekend thing they reported unless it somehow makes more on Sunday, which I doubt.

Of course if all you care about is it doing better than Stampede then… sure lol. It sure is better. But compared to all the other recent Crunchyroll releases… yeah… not the best look. Especially since Film Red received far more advertising than any of them. If you wanna know why OP doesn’t get stuff like other properties do - this is why. It sucks, but nothing we can do but accept reality and just be glad that at least compared to itself, it’s doing better. ‍️

You’re also forgetting that we aren’t counting Saturday or Sunday. It has two more days to make another 3mil to meet projections.

When you see these outlets continually say “OP seems to be opening weaker than expected due to other Crunchyroll releases raising our expectations”… yeah… that’s the stuff that doesn’t paint a pretty picture.

Lmao there was one that said they at least knew what a DB is but had no idea what a “one piece film red” is. Ahh… it sucks but it is what it is.

Hopefully Saturday gives it a good bump.
