More fan backlash due to another hiatus probably isn’t preferable. Also, I’m sure they have the math down on profitability when it comes to how they schedule their releases. Releasing every two or three months might be better for sales than rushing through all of the content and then having to go on hiatus.

But all of this is just speculation. Who knows what they’ll do or why they’ll do it.

You're right, I'm sure they have the math better on when would be the best time to release. The wait continues, hopefully s10 v1 starts shipping soon.

I’ll buy all of the DVD releases, but what I care about is the episodes. I’d love it if they could do an early digital release within the next two weeks of voyage two.

I'm sure another hiatus is inevitable though maybe not as long. Regardless of where they were at in production, the current pandemic has probably caused them to cut back on dubbing which will probably be reflected in the release schedule at some point in the future

That's completely understandable, my only (mild) confusion was how that would affect them releasing punk hazard since we know that has all been dubbed so far.

It’s more than probably. They aren’t dubbing OP now at all. They’re struggling just to dub a few of their simuldub shows. My Hero gets an episode every few weeks and that’s their highest priority and most popular show. There’s no chance in hell they're working on OP now—especially when there’s no priority to since they’re 100 episodes ahead of release.

Behind the Scenes video about the new dub episodes and it confirms that the dub now has three ADR Directors: Mike McFarland, Anthony Bowling and Kyle Phillips

Funimation dropped a behind the scenes video on FB. New directors Anthony Bowling and Kyle Philips working on two of three sets of dub alongside Mike McFarland. Good to see that they had not two but three teams working on the dub before they had the COVID break. They also showed a clip from the filler arc between PH and DR.

Yeah I didn't know what to make of that. I assumed he just meant the episode count of the series when Punk Hazard was originally produced which would make sense because those were the first episode counts he was likely seeing when he was getting involved with the title.

Huh? I'm not confused, I was just saying why he said it. In the first couple seconds of hearing that it threw me off a bit but then I understood. I wouldn't expect anyone but Mike to be super up to date on the current episode count in Japan.

We have no idea yet. Guess we'll find out if Hands Up! remains intact in Voyage 2(?).

I think it would be a smart sales move to release voyage two digitally very shortly after the first voyage is released on streaming or on DVD. Then, the people who finish the first voyage have a way to get the second if they’re impatient.

So hopefully, we’ll see the next voyage released within the next two weeks. It’s been over a month since the last digital release, so I’m getting impatient.

It was never “kid friendly,” but yeah I miss the dubbed openings too.

That video says the episode is a TV Y7 FV rated episode. That means plenty was edited or at least this episode didnt have much objectionable about it. And this is the kid friendly Toonami edit.

Not every episode is like that. The main reason 4Kids dropped OP was because of how expensive and time-consuming it was to edit every episode. The amount of blood, sexual content and violent imagery only continued to increase.

There's no point, financially, for a kid-friendly edit of One Piece in this day and age anymore.

Quite a few of those eps were TVPG, as well. I still have those broadcast episodes saved, and that season still holds a special place in my heart.

You know, the "kid-friendly Funimation dub", while not being completely terrible or anything, had quite a couple of sloppy edits and weird translation choices. There’s really no reason to want to go back to that (and, as MasterKingJC pointed out, Funimation would have no incentive to do so).

Also this opening being dubbed had nothing to do with it being “kid-friendly”. Back in the earlier days of the dub they had made the decision to dub all of the openings and endings even for the uncut DVD releases; dubbed openings weren’t only for the Toonami edits. But then some licensing stuff happened and they aren’t able to do it anymore. So even if they went back to making edited episodes they probably wouldn’t do dubbed openings (or at least not dubs of the original songs).

And "kid-friendly" was really just "broadcast friendly" so far as I know. They just cut out some curse words here and here.

You must be really boring when it comes to entertaining kids. Kids love all that violent and rude stuff. Although you are correct that I used the wrong word. Censor Friendly or Kids TV friendly would be WAY more accurate. And I know we pretty much dont need that anymore thanks to the Netflix deal. My true wish is that One Piece had never been cancelled by Cartoon Network and that it thrived with kids. Adults hate the One Piece anime.

Man, I forgot this past week was the 12th anniversay of Season 1, First Voyage. It kinda crazy to know how far we are into the dub now.

The one thing the edited Fuinimation dub did better was translating relevant on-screen text. Wish that was still the standard.

Also, lollipop was a better edit than removing the cigarette entirely. If that edited dub had continued, Funimation would have had to remove a lot of animations of Sanji holding the cigarette up to his mouth.

I beg to disagreee the second at least show they care to make One Piece not utterly childish (I wanted to say ridiculous but that is very much the defining trait of Original One Piece). Although if you told me the dub could continue under the condition of having the lolipop, I would eat it up!

Mind you I am not against the lolipop because its ridiculous or childish, but the alternative is better because it not only shows Funimation cares but also that they care about keeping the feel of the show intact.

I actually wish that 4Kids had been sincere from the beggining and made a dub that truly honored the original. Instead of…you know...lying.

Well, that’s all she wrote. Definitely not getting it in July or maybe even August. That sucks. Release season ten v1 finally, then another several month hiatus with no announcement.

Hopefully they release it digitally.

With the greatest of respect, Skippy, I think I'm justified for feeling disappointed right now after 2 years of no new episodes.

I get the pandemic had its role to play, but it's perfectly fine for me to disappointed.

And it could be delayed a month or two, we don't know so let's not jump to conclusions other than the most logical one that a delay has happened. It's not like work hasn't been done at all on the dub and other sites still have it up - I'm not saying you cant be disappointed but wait a bit

I have to disagree about this. We weren't really on hiatus, since Funimation was releasing the backlog with the tv specials and Stampede. Again, I wouldn't really call it break, since we're still getting new material.

There are several other factors like mastering the final episodes, recording commentaries, packaging and so much more that might have required more time due to the pandemic. Plus we literally know they've recorded so much since October and FUNi has had July releases delayed til August this year so

Idk about 2008, but the most recent cancellation was due to the licensing cost being more than the ratings justified.

It's clear FUNimation is still releasing DVD/BD's in the coming months though, so I don't understand how the pandemic would have affected one piece? And like it's been said in the thread numerous times, the dub for Punk Hazard has been finished for a while now.

My bet is the commentaries track wasn't recorded in time or the commissioned cover art got delayed.

But yes, there's no excuse to not release the episodes digitally since they're already completed.

One Piece is hardly the first property recently to have physical releases delayed (probably even more that weren't publicly announced) and if you look at the solicitations for the next couple months they are pretty sparse compared to normal, so it's not exactly like everything is just "business as usual" for their release schedule.

And there's more that goes into the production of physical releases besides just episodes being dubbed, so if anything goes wrong in the process than of course there will be potential delays. Granted they could always continue the digital route, but with the DVD releases we really shouldn't be surprised by any delays in the current situation.

I figure they were going to be some delays due to the current situation. Plus most of Funimation's releases in July and August are rereleases, which is probably more easier to get out in the current situation.
