I've seen people comment that they're nervous about Toei taking over and hurting the writing. I think it will be fine. If Dragon Ball Super had a similar "takeover", then Toei will allow plenty of liberties to be taken with One Piece's writing. DBS's dub had plenty.

I doubt that. Chris Sabat does that with Dragon Ball because he feels everyone and their mother has seen DBS subbed. Sure that is true with One Piece but…
1-The director is Mike McFarland who is WAY more professional.
2-Other than Joel and some other mishaps, One Piece is one of the crown jewels of Funimation dubbing.
3-Funimation knows the fans come to expect quality. -
It's not on the same level as DB Super, but One Piece hasn't been completely safe from that kind of thing. The dub added at least one bit of Marvel-style meta humour to Marineford that took me out of it (a random Marine reacting to Mehawk saying something like 'woah, we have gotta stop calling that a sword' in a scene that was played completely straight in Japanese) and Sabo saying he needs to leave before he's 17 instead of by the time he's 17th.
The biggest change for DBS was using the dub names in the subtitles, but other than switching to Sniper King I don't know what there is to change; then again, there was that issue with 4Kids attack names in the East Blue episodes, so these issues have always been a thing with Funi's releases.

These are the kind of changes I actually like and hope Funimation continues to do. Those types of scenes in the anime are so slow and boring anyway and kill the pacing. The humor definitely makes the slow pacing more enjoyable
I imagine these are the same types of changes they did on YuYuHakusho, that helped that show be even better as well
-
The was that issue with 4Kids attack names in the East Blue episodes, so these issues have always been a thing with Funi's releases.
really. I DO NOT REMEMBER THIS.
my 2008 dvd have hsa gum gum pistol. -
I dont remember it either. It would have made the fandom go into a rage.
-
It wasn't 4kids attack names, but in East Blue they translated all the attacks to english (so Dragon Twister instead of Tatsumaki, and all Sanji's attacks were like "Leg, Loin, Neck, Face Shot". This is all changed back to normal by season 2
-
It was because there was a list of 4kids terms that FUNi was being forced to use and at that point the translator Mato was able to get things changed back but he had to cite some source as to why (IE: Manga where oda wrote something in English etc)
This was described as a complicated process of red tape and approvals back then so they had to prioritize certain things over others and some more acceptable 4kids things got kept.
IE: "Shark on Darts" was "Shark Darts" and "Gomu Gomu no Ono" was translated as "Gum Gum BattleAxe" instead of just "Axe"
-
There was one thing that does baffle me to this day and is that Crocodile uses the WRONG attack when Luffy finishes him off with Gum Gum Storm.

A number of English terms have changed over the years. FUNi was exclusively using "Marines" at the start, but then later eased into the technically more accurate "Navy" once the bad taste of 4Kids! was out of everyone's mouths. They used Paramecia at first, but later switched to Paramythia. They changed their pronunciation of Zoan from "Zone" to "Zo-in". This was all with Mike at the helm.
Joel's Marineford episodes had issues with consistency, where names like Sakazuki and Sengoku were pronounced differently from episode to episode, but I remember Stampede was fine in that regard. But I think they've also changed how they pronounce Basil and Bege.
-
Speaking of pronunciation… it always bugged me that, from what I remember, "Enies" in "Enies Lobby" in the dub was pronounced as "ennies," as if it rhymed with "pennies." The correct pronunciation should be like "N.E.S" instead. Granted, I haven't watched all the dubbed episodes of the Enies Lobby arc, so if they eventually fixed that, then cool. If they didn't then I suppose they were at least consistent with themselves.
Here's hoping for further consistency.

Is it just me, or does Smoker’s VA always deliver lines in the same exact way? Or the same volume, maybe? I don’t know. There’s always been something off about his performance that I’ve never been able to articulate. I’m not saying he’s bad or anything; it’s a more nuanced critique I can’t put my finger on.

He always sounds perpetually fed up with everyone else's nonsense, which I find pretty fitting for him.
It did bother me that for his introduction they pronounced Hawkin's name "basil" like the herb instead of "Bazzle" like the name a human person might have, but yeah I think it was changed the other way around. To be fair, it could just have been that Shakky only knows the word in the term of the herb, not the person.
-
I guess I hadn’t realized just how many inconsistencies there have been in naming.
-

I think this is okay as long as it's done with anime-only filler. If we have to deal with egregious "woah he punched the other guy! so strong!" reaction shots, I'd rather they at least be funny.
-
I'm all for dubs taking liberties and either putting stuff where the original scenes were basically nothing, or going with name pronunciations that just plain sound better.
The stigma against dubs taking any sort of liberties or deviations from direct translations has really gotten bad in recent years. Can't understand it myself. I'm pretty sure most of my favorite late 90s/2000s anime I grew up on always took tons of liberties and that's what gave them the extra charm that's made them maintain their ranks for me for all these years.

Humor ages poorly, so a lot of the more heavily localized dubs are now seen as dated and kind of embarassing. It doesn't help that there was a lot of fan anger at dubbing companies in the early 2000s because quite a few of them refused to do uncut subbed DVD releases.
There's also the fact that Funimation got in trouble a few years ago for inserting politics into a few of their dubs, quite a few people are still angry about that.

Is it just me or are the sound effects really quiet in this latest batch of episodes?

Haven't noticed that, and I've watched them on several devices. Probably your TV.
-
You were correct, it was surround sound speakers. These digital episodes have 5.1 English audio, first time that's available in HD!
-
The new episodes are up on PSN now. When do you folks think we’ll get the next set digitally released? My money is on either shortly before the DVD of v1 or shortly after.
-
So everyone's getting the episodes before FUNimation?
-
So everyone's getting the episodes before FUNimation?
Yeah. They want everyone to pay for the episodes. Need to justify the money they sunk into it.

August solicits on Friday. Hopefully we’ll get voyage three in August and official confirmation of voyage two in July.

Oh wow i thought it was already confirmed for July :(

Not quite. It appeared on retailer websites but not Funimation’s official release list. But the same thing happened with Voyage One, so we’re all hopeful.
-
August solicitations today. Fingers crossed.
-
Episodes will come out digitally first anyway.

Episodes will come out digitally first anyway.
Yes, but when they come out digitally is dependent on when they come out on DVD. Since the digital releases seem to be around a month before the physical.

Some of us prefer the voyages option that we've had since the start.

Question for people getting it digitally:
They're HD right?

16 chars of yes.

Bummer. August solicits weren’t announced today after all. Probably delayed until Monday. That happens sometimes.
-
Huh. Solicits didn't go up again today. That's a bit weird.

Global pandemic destroying infrastructure across the board weird?

Global pandemic destroying infrastructure across the board weird?
No, I suppose not. Poor word choice on my part. Thanks for the nit-pick, though.
-
Funimation August releases are out. No One Piece in August.
-
I don’t think the final solicits are up yet.
-
Voyage Two didn't go up with the August solicitations like Voyage One did with the July ones so it'll probably be announced at a later date, especially given how Toei is putting them out digitally. It's still listed on several sites so no worries, just have to be patient I guess
-
Disappointing, but not too surprising considering COVID. Here's hoping that, while the physical release slows, the digital one keeps up. No idea if Toei or Funi will desire to stay close to the physical release dates.
-
When I meant later date I meant this month still or next month cause it's still listed for July on Best Buy and Target and the like. Of course it could actually get delayed cause of COVID, but let's just wait and see here
-
First voyage coming to FunimationNow on June 2nd, and Stampede on FunimationNow for two months starting this Friday. No news on voyage two.

Awesome news. I'm in UK and do have FunimationNow, but Toei Europe won't let them stream it here. I've got the first Voyage on order, and can't wait!

Aren't there free ways of tricking your browser into thinking you're in a different country? Hola! VPN comes to mind. That is, if you have an American subscription.

The idea waiting 2 months after the June release for the second batch of episodes sounds pretty bad. Especially knowing they are dubbing dressrosa currently, so there shouldn't be holdups with punk hazard's dubbing proccess still.
-
Good! I'm glad they're using Funimation's dub it's too awesome to be re redubbed

It’s been about a month since the digital paid version was released. Another month or two would indeed suck.
Probably they’re trying to make it last because they don’t know when covid will end. Here’s hoping they “make it last” by releasing a set every two months (though more often would be preferable to me personally). I’m crossing my fingers for a voyage two digital release soon.

I don't get that logic though. Why do they need to make it last? We've just had a hiatus that lasted for 2 years. If Punk Hazard is completely dubbed, just finish releasing the season and then go on a hiatus before Dressrosa if that must be the case.
I'm not trying to sound greedy, it just seems like when we finally may see a consistent release schedule, we are right back where we started wondering when the next release comes.
-
Just noticed that not only Stampede is in English—all of the TV specials are dubbed on FunimationNow free right now.

More fan backlash due to another hiatus probably isn’t preferable. Also, I’m sure they have the math down on profitability when it comes to how they schedule their releases. Releasing every two or three months might be better for sales than rushing through all of the content and then having to go on hiatus.
But all of this is just speculation. Who knows what they’ll do or why they’ll do it.
