Joel is still listed as ADR Director unsurprisingly but I'd wait til the DVD in June for a full staff list cause it's weirdly incomplete. Should be noted though that an ADR Approvals credit now exists so Toei definitely has more involvement in the dub now despite approvals always being made by them

You have to remember that these episodes were dub a couple years ago. Since I remember reading that Joel stop directing on the show around the mid point or near the end of Punk Hazard. Also I'm going to wait for the dvd to watch the episodes,since I already preorder for Season 10, Voyage 1.

Went ahead and purchased it on Amazon! Punk Hazard isn't even an arc I'm particularly fond of, but what the hey, I'll support the dub.

Kind of frurstrating that they tell us they'll release it on FunimationNOW months ago, then when they do release it, it isn't even on FunimationNOW, but has to be paid for separately on another streaming service.

UPDATE: On FB, Funimation responded saying "Stay tuned" to someone complaining about it not being on FunimationNow.

We still got a couple more episodes before Hands up starts. Since it starts on episode 591.

Also, it's pretty crappy you can't watch with a Prime membership. I'll hold off watching until I get my DVD.

I'm not that obssessed with the dub enough to buy it digitally or even watch it on funimation's streaming service, my main goal has just been to collect the series so I'll just wait till June.

Bought the episodes to support the dub, if nothing else. Will watch them after work and share thoughts here. I skimmed an episode, and I'm still not sold on Cesaer, but Kinnemon sounds better than he did in the recap movie. Can't wait to watch them tonight.

Then after that begins the long wait to early July for V2.

Haven’t watched so cant say specifically, but it looks like as usual. Except the credits are on a black screen at the end of the episode. Joel McDonald is ADR director, which confirms that this was all recorded and done over a year ago (Joel quit or was fired somewhere around a year ago). Toei is credited with translation (though of course there’s still a head writer and lead writer).

Well, feels good to finally have an answer as to why it took two years. A dramatic licensing change.

That and distribution so FUNi still has a large hand in it, but Toei's is now even bigger and resembles the type of involvement they had with DBS

I'd be real interesting to know what went on behind the scenes on this one. But at least we're back in business which is the most important thing.

This is starting to make me wonder if Toei payed Sentai to dub the original Saint Seiya anime that was recently completed on Netflix.

Not sure if this changes anything, since Toei had a hand in the name translations before. More oversight from them would only really change how the dub is released, right? Like dropping it on Amazon/Microsoft like they’ve done.

Hopefully Toei taking over is good news for the speed-up? If they push it out every month digitally, I’d be down. Whatever it takes to get a speed-up.

I would guess that Toei wants to get as much dub out as possible before the live action series hits so new fans can dump a ton of money and binge everything.

Yeah, based off that twitter thread they did this for dragon ball super and viz's sailor moon already also.

Not necessarily, as many dubs in recent years have been hampered quality-wise resulting from too much involvement from Japan. Such as insisting on wonky, overly literal, and even broken English translations. I'm hoping the same fate doesn't befall OP but if it does, it may not happen immediately here considering Punk Hazard may have been dubbed before all of these licensing changes took place.

I was wondering about this, too. It’s a question of how much their oversight onto the scripts has increased. Might be a question worth asking Clint on Twitter.

Might be worth shooting at him, but that would prpoably be something he wouldn't be able to divulge.

I'd hate to see them change from the slightly liberal (but accurate) translation-style we've grown accustomed too, and turn into something like the Demon Slayer dub where the vocal talent is there, but the translations are virtually carbon copy from the subs and make whole thing come off as awkward.

Yeah I really love the dubbing style Funi has gone with more recent One Piece arcs, especially in citizen/fodder/background characters. Making them sarcastic and quippy is wayyy funnier than the subs, where they just exclaim about whats happening very literally. Marineford specifically has some of my favorite background grunt character one-liners

Interesting. So Toei are now paying for the production of the dub, and are in charge of distribution? I'm down for this if it means they are committed to releasing episodes on a regular schedule. I think this stems from them wanting their IPs back in a sense where they can micro manage all details, like other members have suggested, this is what they've done with Dragon Ball Super, Sailor Moon and the new Saint Seiya dub. I hope they are doing it with One Piece because they are disappointed with how far back Funimation had drifted, and now want to put money in to fast track it as quickly as possible.

This is very interesting that Toei is supervising it. I really hope that this means more focus on a consistent release from Toei's part.

From what I have seen of both the recent Saint Seiya dub (I'm up to near the end of the Sanctuary arc) and the Sailor Moon dub (I'm up to the early parts of the S season). Both dubs are pretty good in my opinion.

A speed up is definitely happening. Also if you remember the announcement of the dub coming back, colleen said multiple teams are working on the dub to bring as much episodes as we can

Not really much. The only thing that I remember is they change Toppo's name to Top in the dub.

I'm guessing we're gonna get more strict adherence to the official names list. So Elbaph, Ponegliff, etc. might make a reappearance.

We'll see some names get changed. Hopefully nothing too glaring. One big one we might see changed is Jimbei/Jinbei.

Watched a few minutes of the first PH episode. They give "samurai" a distinctly Japanese pronunciation. "sa-moo-rai" Just a small thing I noticed; probably not thanks to Toei.

Demon Slayer hasn't stuck out to me–but maybe that's because Tanjiro is supposed to be very formal and proper.

Would suck if we got robotic language, but I don't see that happening to any notable degree. And I don't mind a more strict adherence to the translations as long as the lines don't sound unnatural.

I might be the only one that like the Z Ambition filler arc. I just want to know if Lily is good or not in the dub.

Funimation had always pronounced samurai like that. It's always jarring when characters drop their entire personality to put on a proper Japanese accent when saying certain words and names.

I can't say for sure since I haven't gotten there yet (only through two episodes so far), but in the recent Stampede dub, it was still "Shambles".

I doubt that. In the past, with both the simulcast and the dub, naming changes tended to happen to ensure more consistency with the Viz manga . And since the manga (and every piece of official English released One Piece material for that matter) goes with Jimbei I don’t see that changing.

Though, from everything I’ve seen/heard in the past, Toei has always had a large amount of control over the terminology used in One Piece, so I don’t know if them being more involved in the overall production will massively change things all that much more than usual.

That's what I wanted to hear.

So this Toei thing sounds like all good news to me. Maybe some slight changes in the script due to added oversight, but the main pro is that they're sinking more money into it–and they're the ones responsible for Funimation having multiple teams already deep into DR.

It's somewhere in between. Voyage 1 is scheduled for DVD in June. Voyage 2 leak says it's most likely scheduled for July. So we're assuming this means a speed-up–especially considering how many episodes we know funimation has in the can (over 70, thanks to Cavendish actor saying he was 20 in to his episodes a month or so ago).

Also the original announcement of the dub's return had producer Justin Cook stating that they were having multiple teams dubbing simultaneously to get as much as possible out. Time will tell how/if plans will be affected with the pandemic but at the very least I'd say the current schedule for the first 2 voyages of Season 10 seem to indicate their intentions going forward.

I recall seeing Toei in the credits for translations and such since way back in Thriller Bark.

I hope Toei allows FUNi to continue using the consistent language that the dub has used thus far.

Watched a handful of the PH episodes. Monet sounds really cool. Kin gives a much better performance here than he did in the recap; I expect he’ll settle into the role even more as we move forward. It’ll take some getting used to for me even though the pitch and formal cadence is pretty similar to the sub.

Cesar, I’m still on the fence about. Also, his laugh sounds more like shirorororo than shurorororo.
