It looks like Crunchyroll has uploaded a new English subtitle track for the dub that translates on screen text, but that's the only thing subtitled on it.
Baby steps.
EDIT: Ugh never mind. Looks like those stop after 950.
@Captain-Krupp whoops, should have said “foe.” Thanks for the catch.

Oh, good. Glad they listened. I'm sure the episodes beyond 950 will be added soon.
What did you mean by "that's the only thing subtitled on it"?
Think they just meant as apposed to their also being closed captions for the dub dialogue.
I didn't have time to do a thorough investigation, but I just went into the Crunchyroll app on my Samsung TV, and opened up the Jaya episode where the Five Elders and Blackbeard Pirates are introduced.
No onscreen text subtitles at all, but there were closed captions for the dialog. The closed captions, however, did NOT translate any onscreen text. :(
Odd.
One of the more recent episodes, I think when Luffy is eating Caribou’s food, had a lot of on-screen Japanese text that was untranslated. Always annoying.
Think we’ll get the G5 set at the end of March? I’m hoping.

Odd.
I checked the earlier Wano episodes (before 950), and there are two subtitle tracks now available. One for closed captioning, and one for translating onscreen text. Hopefully this spreads quickly to all episodes.

Don’t hold your breath. It’s very unlikely to be Tuesday.
Fairly immature, but I do feel a bit of hype when Kidd shouts, “This bitch is mine,” at Big Mom. Feels nice to have some bits of authentic cursing.

Woops yeah. The English subtitle track just translates on screen text while the English (CC) track subtitles dialogue. From what I can tell there's no way to view both.
And 951-960 were lacking the non-CC track but every episode I watched since 961 (up to 986 I think) has the English track, though a few episodes are botched. I might be off on the numbers, but one episode (981?) has the previous episode's subtitle track (980?).
@Kitsune-Inferno I refuse to rely on CrunchyRoll for future translations after their CEO announced that they will be made with AI. I watched the dub instead and it was free on their site. It's disappointing that the One Piece Official website was shut down and hasn't been revived yet.

Good timing then. Netflix has the latest arc subbed only.
I’m only learning about this now, thats so incredibly disappointing but unfortunately not surprising.
I really wanted to be positive about the merger but we’ve only had awful decision after awful decision since then. I worry for the future.

Never surprising. Mergers & monopolies are, without fail, always bad on the consumer when you take a five-year look.
Small update on my progress of catching up on the dub. I'm up to Episode 905 (The ending of the Holdem fight.). I really like the dub voices for both Holdem and Speed. The voice actress for Speed did a great job on Speed's laugh.
The title card wasn’t in English on episode 1049, lol. Maybe what’s what you guys have been chatting about lately.
All of the episodes from the latest release just have the English dub slapped on top of the existing Japanese video track. Stark departure from all previous episodes. Praying this is just a mistake.
It's so dumb that they're simuldubbing without releasing.
@Zephray my wishful thinking is for 1100 simuldub. It's to air around mid April.
@Muginiz said in Funimation DVD Discussion IV (Please Check First Post for FAQ):
Egghead Saul episodes for sure, no doubt
I came here to post the exact same thing. Considering we know Wano is essentially finished, and thinking about what "heavy" scene Robin would have post-Wano...how could it be anything other than the scenes involving Robin crying after hearing the story of Ohara and the Giants from Shaka?
And if that's so....
Are we seriously fucking dubbing a scene in an episode that hasn't even been released in Japan yet?????
The Japanese episode that came out a week ago only had the first part of the Ohara info. The episode airing this Sunday should have the rest of that flashback, as well as Robin crying over who may be alive....
Crunchyroll seems to be in a constest to outdo 4kids in pissing people off the most despite the dub being amazing and uncut.
wow this shows that we could easily have a simuldub but they just refuse to let it be for some reason
You guys have to remember it's Toei who decided when the episodes get released now. Heck, Wano isn't even done on the home video release in Japan yet. Since the most recent episode got released on home video was Episode 1075. At the rate they're going the home video release release of Wano won't be done until the beginning of September. Also have to remember most volumes now only got 2 - 3 episodes due to they're includes the recap episodes on the home video releases.
For goodness sake. Why don't they simuldub? I don't get it. Just drop all what you have left of Wano. At least do that.
Worse, I kind of expect a release break after Wano. We’ll see.
Why they don’t at least start releasing egghead weekly, even if it’s months behind, is beyond me.
But yes. Fingers crossed we get a simuldub one day and these Wano finale episodes drop soon.
I don't care if they're behind the Japanese release. Plus I do caution that just because voice work is being recorded doesn't necessarily mean the episode is ready or even close to ready to air. Robin could be the first one in the booth for all we know. Even if she were the last, there's still a lot of mixing and sequencing to be done, I'm sure.
It is good to hear that they are likely recording for episodes that have yet to air, which is a pretty big and encouraging milestone to reach!
What I take issue with is the utter lack of communication when it comes to episode drops. Give us a schedule or something.
Yeah, same on not caring if they're super close to Japan's release. I just want a consistent episode. Would be thankful and satisfied if they were even two or three months behind but releasing them weekly. I don't mind if the 'simuldub' is delayed/behind; I just want consistency.
Crunchyroll June releases are out. No One Piece releases.
@Muginiz Somebody died?
Pretty behind on episodes myself. Just recently watched 1049, which ends with that gorgeous Ota cut (Luffy and Yamato attacking while Luffy is on Momo). Have to say, I really think Yamato’s actress, Michelle Rojas, has done a wonderful job, and you can hear her shredding her voice during that cut. The scream is insane, really impressive. (The only bit I wasn’t so impressed with was Yamato (in the first half of Onigashima) doing the “I’m a man” fake deep voice, which sounded too corny and unnecessary. But that’s likely more a direction issue than an issue with the actress. Everything else has sounded phenomenal.)
Also liking Momo’s adult voice so far. Such a hard transition to change voices for a character mid-arc, but it seems to be working. The director & new actor are nailing having the proper reverence to the previous voice.
Oh, hey. If they’re caught up in dub production, that means all the Vegapunks have been casted. Looking forward to hearing them, but even moreso looking forward to better hearing the elder stars this arc.

They’re not listing OP movie six here, but this has me concerned for the rights situation. Hosoda is becoming very popular, and that makes licensing more and more difficult and costly.
It doesn't include Hosoda's Digimon movie ether. The Digimon movie that Hosoda directed is getting a new release from Discotek later this year.

Zephray, you DO know Mamoru Hosoda did that movie while he was a Toei Animation Employee and they own the movie and the franchise, it's impossible for him to "own" the One Piece Movie 6 Film and thus he has zero say on who can dub it?
A update on my progress of catching up on the dub. I have finished up Wano Act 1 and the first intermission episode (Episode 917). The dub did a great job on Luffy vs. Kaido, Round 1.
It's great to hear from some of the english voice cast that haven't heard in a long time (Mihawk, Moria, Perona, Shiryu, and Deavon). As more I hear it, Chris Rager's performance for Blackbeard is getting really great in my opinion. His laughter throughout 917 was really chilling in the dub.

Didn’t know we had a licensing expert in the house. Tell me, do you think Hosoda owns any of his other films? (Sarcasm)
Point is, I don’t think any of us understand the exact deal Toei has with Funimation, as well as how particular rights work for old properties. Might someone have to pay a premium somewhere for the Hosoda name attached to this film?
All the other films are independent from any larger franchise. It makes no sense for anyone involved to by a random film in a franchise thats two and a half decades old. They werent saying CR have the right to dub it, just that it’s extremely unlikely GKIDS got the rights to it.
@Zephray said in Funimation DVD Discussion IV (Please Check First Post for FAQ):

Just to be clear, he probably does to some extent.
Hosoda co-founded Studio Chizu, the animation studio that created four of the six films in that article, and those six films exclusively make up the Works section of the Chizu website. So Variety is probably just using "Mamoru Hosoda" as a synonym for Studio Chizu.
These movies take a massive budget. I don’t think any major anime director owns a significant portion of their own films. Investors do.
@Zephray guess I have to be an investor to own some of his films then. ️

This is the post I wanted to make but was too dumb to do so, his movies are owned by Studio Chizu, I didnt know the name, but I DID know they belonged to the studio, even if he himself owns a part of the studio. I dont think we'll ever see the movies, because if Toei wanted them dubbed we would have seen them YEARS AGO. I would LOVE to be wrong though, but even then, Spain dubbed them all, with the monkey paw price of being unable to dub the actual series to this day. Latin America dubbed about 150 more episodes despite starting like 6 years ago and is thus the only dub in what the world sees as "Spanish"

Didn’t they announce this like a year ago with little to no news since? Hopefully not indicative of the future of his other films.
I’m an early 90s kid, so I’d be thrilled to see the Digimon collection. If they ever release it.
Do yall think the Puma collab will sell out online quick?

If anything, I would say that the classic movies are more likely to get dubbed now than they've ever been because Crunchymation has only now caught up with the TV series.
