What happened to the original actor for Zeff? Did he retire also?

Throughout this month, we will be testing new features (like search) so you may experience some hiccups from time to time. We'll try to not be too disruptive...

Wow. They recasted a slew of people. Do the new actors try to match the old voices, or do they have whole new takes? I'd prefer the former.
This type of thing can happen when you dub a special based on material that was dubbed over 10 years ago.
And I’d say most of them seem to be trying to imitate the previous actor
@G1Ravage:
What happened to the original actor for Zeff? Did he retire also?
I assume so. I know he’s married to Juli Erickson who moved out of the area and retired
Came to check in here and I’m glad to see things are looking up. Quick question for those that have watched the Episode of East Blue documentary. I recently saw a post that says Eric Vale mentions Sanji’s second backstory. Is that true and do you guys think that means they’ve dubbed up to that point? I don’t know why his backstory was brought up so I was just wondering.
Literally just heard that line and came to the forum. “We just got to learn about his history more. His siblings and stuff like that.” What the hell. Are they already dubbing Whole Cake Island? No way they’re 100+ episodes ahead of releases. Maybe he reads the manga or watches the sub and “we” was referring to everyone?
Godswill said it’s “one of our top shows”; did someone say he left Funimation recently? What was that about?
Maybe they really will release in 24 episode sets; that would make sense if they somehow are 100+ episodes ahead without us knowing.

Yeah he mentions it, but that doesn't mean they actually dubbed up to that point. Even if we were to assume they have dubbed further ahead than we thought I rather doubt they're that far in.
Generally, I’d agree, but his phrasing seemed pretty specific…
If they’re dubbing 24-episode sets, and releasing them once every other month, it would make sense for them to be five or six sets ahead of release, landing them at WCI. I agree with you that it’s extremely unlikely, but I don’t know how else to take the quote.
If Kyle did record the Punk Hazard Arc back in August 2017, it isn't inconceivable to think perhaps they've dubbed Dressrosa. I did read something a few years back from someone on twitter who just left Funimation talking about a One Piece project saying it was "Suuuuuper" it appeared on my timeline because Funimation liked it.
I’d like to think they’ve gotten as far as WCI, but I know Dressrosa is a pretty long arc. The last I had a bit of an idea as to what their progress was was back in January of last year when Luci said at the IKKiCON panel that they were about 200 episodes behind Japan (Japan was at around the early 820’s at the time).
Episode of East Blue was as good as it could possibly be. I was expecting a rushed, rough clip show like the Skypeia recap, but to my surprise they did a great job of condensing everything without it feeling too rushed. The writers for the special did a great job of narrowing down the major plotpoints and deciding what to keep and what to cut for each arc. Really impressed; I never would've thought twenty minutes each would feel so decently paced (keeping in mind that it's still obviously very condensed, of course). Of course, they cut down Zoro and Usopp's 20 minutes to 15 each and gave that extra time to Nami's, since the Arlong Arc was essentially the East Blue Finale (alongside Roguetown).
In terms of voices, most folks didn't sound as I remembered them, but I have no idea if this is because my memory sucks or because most of them were recast or out of practice. Zeff seemed the most notable change, and, to be honest, many of the early cast sounded like standard white guy #345. I remember this being a critique of the early dub seasons–that many of the men sounded alike. Good to remember we haven't had that critique since the East Blue / Baroque Works.
Between this and the documentary, I'm really happy with this purchase. Anyone wondering whether they should get the set and is on the fence, I'm pushing you off the fence now. I was very hesitant about whether I'd like this set or not too, but it was great. Doubt I'll be able to say the same about the Skypeia one...
Just finished the special. My heart jumped into my throat when I saw the credits, and noticed that "Carrot" was voiced by Kate Oxley. My head was spinning for a moment, before I realized that we already had a character named Carrot this early on in the show. XD
What also surprised me, was the number of one shot characters whose voice actor returned, but sounded NOTHING like they did in the original season. Jay Hickman's Choo is not as low pitched as his previous work. Sean Hennigan's Beckman also sounds quite different. Even Shanks sounded off. Not sure if this is the new direction they're taking the characters, or if they just couldn't remember how they previously played them without Mike McFarland's help. Hell, even Cynthia Cranz' Bellemere sounded much more deep throated and older than in the past. Pleasantly surprised that Chris Ayres was well enough to return as Johnny, and Tiffany Grant once again portrayed Nojiko, after being replaced in her one line previous appearance in one of the recent specials. After all these years, still unsure why they don't use Arlong's unique laugh.
As for the voice replacements, they all sounded good enough. Garrett Schenck's Zeff was hit or miss.

So it wasn't just me. I noticed a lot of these, and thought Shanks in particular sounded weird to start off with, too. Man, it sounds like Kyle didn't even bother to have old clips ready to help the actors replicate. Be ready: there are directors worse than Joel. Joel was never even that bad–just not as good or consistent as Mike.

Another thing that pissed me of:
! Adult Sabo randomly appeared in the end credits. My fiance, a dub-only watcher, nearly saw it. She was looking at the screen, but reading the text instead, so she _just_ missed it.
Honestly, I think Kyle Phillips is a good Director (I can't comment on his work for this special, as I've not seen it) he took over from Tyler Walker for Fairy Tail's final season, and has done a great job. He also did a great job on Ace Attorney and more recently, the ongoing Fire Force dub.
I will say, it is likely he needs time to adjust to One Piece - he's likely only done Punk Hazard and this special.

Good to hear; hopefully he puts more attention into the show, if he's indeed directing it instead of Mike.
I guess Mike doesn't want to spend his whole life only dubbing OP, huh?
Godswill said it’s “one of our top shows”; did someone say he left Funimation recently? What was that about?
Luffy_80 says the previous brand manager was Paul Frugé II. Godswill is part of the "One Piece at a Time" podcast as well, which is still ongoing. The fact that we have the current brand manager saying that One Piece is “one of our top shows”, Colleen saying they hope to continue dubbing the series on the documentary, and other Funimation voice actors either watching episodes subbed or reading ahead in the manga seems like a good sign. While One Piece might not the have the same name recognition as Dragon Ball or Naruto in the US, it does seem like it has considerable following to justify continuing the dub.

Godswill (who made the statement about One Piece being one of their biggest shows) wasn't a Brand Manager, he was social media coordinator, and has now left the company. Not sure if anyone has replaced Paul Frugé II yet.
But are the performances offputting due how different they are from the first season or they just flat out suck regardless of the previous takes? I can forgive the former but not the latter.
Little bit of both, IMO. Need to watch again.
Guys there are rumors of Viz Media losing the license to Sailor Moon. Whether its true or not, I wonder what that means for One Piece and Funimation.

I doubt this is true. Since Viz is about to release the final volume of Sailor Moon in November.

Sorry, a previous post also identified Godswill as the brand manager. From a post on his Twitter account it appears he moved to California and started a podcast with another guy (not certain if the latter is why he left Funimation). Aside from getting Godswill position wrong, I still stand by what I posted after that as to why the dub will likely continue.

Where did you here this info? Just want to know if the source is reliable or not.
I doubt this is true. Since Viz is about to release the final volume of Sailor Moon in November.
Also All of SuperS is being added to Hulu on October 1st or 2nd. Viz will also likely have the license for the two movies for Crystal that will come out in 2020.
Godswill was let go from Funimation due to some unknown reason, but I think he's still working on their podcast? Not sure on that. He moved to LA to work at a fan consulting agency. Just looked up his Twitter. Bummer to have one less OP fan in the office.
Godswill is no longer part of the One Piece at a Time podcast either sadly, but that of course doesn't say anything about the dub continuing - since Godswill was never part of the brand management team for One Piece
Rewatching the special. Right off the bat, Young Luffy’s voice is higher and more nasally than the Sabo flashback (except, for some reason, when he’s yelling; then he sounds the almost the same—loses some of the nasal when screaming), and Shanks does not have his usual gravel—he sounds way more smooth and polished a voice. Makino, Beckman, Lucky Roux, mountain bandits, and the other residents sound the same.
Small nitpicks so far, anyways. Not enough to detract and the acting is working. I’ll post incrementally over the next few days as I watch a little bit before bed each night and compare on the funimation app with originals.
Haven't watched the special yet, but watched the documentary last night. It was really nice and surprisingly long. Didn't learn too much new info, but it was just really cool to see the cast and crew talk about their experience. Also saw that I'm in one of the final photos in the credits, though I'm mostly cropped out (I'm the Capone cosplay holding Colleen's arm on the right, from NYCC 2018)

Whp replaced him and when did they take his place on the podcast
Godswill left the Podcast at about the beginning of Skypiea (they’re nearly done with Enies Lobby now) and they’ve been rotating his spot with MJ and Jonna (and one time someone else whose name I can’t recall). It’s been fun seeing the different perspectives since MJ speaks Japanese and has been providing insights as to cultural references and word play.

Chris Rager as Teach is a great choice!. I'm always going to miss Cole Brown, but it's nice that Chris is playing him, he's in good hands.
Whoa, that's big news. Chris Rager is our new Blackbeard!
That worries me a bit, honestly. Not anything against Chris Rager, as he's a fine actor. But his trademark voice is rather recognizable, and I'm worried I might hear Arlong in his Blackbeard role. I'll of course reserve judgement until I see the movie. I'm confident Mike McFarland wouldn't have cast him if he wasn't a fine replacement.
I think Chris will do his best to sound closer to Cole's rendition of Teach than sounding like Arlong.
Just noticed that Funimation spoiled Law's full name for dub-only watchers, so oops.

I might be misinterpreting what you're saying and I apologize if I do. He might not have been part of the brand management team, but he still might have been privy to some info about how One Piece was doing in the US (such as sales figures for DVD sales or viewer count on Funimation Now).
@Zek:
Looks like Chris Rager is our new Blackbeard. A pretty good choice, so long as he can keep himself from just sounding like Arlong.
To be fair his voice for Arlong is similar to his voice for Mr. Satan. I've heard Chris in other shows like Assassination Classroom were I didn't know he was voicing a character until I saw his name in the credits, although in later episodes there were some instances were I could here Mr. Satan in his character's voice.
Daman Mills tagged Zach Bolton in his tweet announcing his role as Bullet so he's probably new Sabo, not listed on the cast list for obvious reasons
Finally I've been waiting for tickets to go on sale.
I just got episode of east blue, and saw the special feature. It was really nice, and it seems that they are really committed in dubbing the show, but please give us the announcement already.
Ah, Daman Mills was recording his lines for three hours straight on the day I toured. Very cool to know. Too bad the tour began right after he finished.
Don’t know Zach Bolton, but I won’t be too picky for Sabo. I’m sure he’ll be fine.
Glad to hear Blackbeard was well recasted. Hopefully the actor tries to match rather than reinvent.
Ah derp, I messed up my Zach's, Zach Bolton probably isn't Sabo then - they just didnt list Sabo for some reason, same with Hancock and Smoker
Chris Rager is a great choice for the new dub voice of Blackbeard. I enjoy his performances as Mr. Torgue (Borderlands), Mr. Satan, and Arlong.
Zach Bolton directed 18 episodes of the show in the Skypeia arc, he's been a line producer, assistant producer and played a few minor characters. Don't know why he was tagged, but if he is playing Sabo I'm sure he'll be fine.

Cole Brown (RIP) in a way gave his own take on the character. There was no voice similarity at all to the Japanese voice. That's not a bad thing at all, but I'm hoping that Chris Rager provides his own unique take on the character. Blackbeard will be with us for the rest of the series, so I'd hate for Rager to merely do an imitation the whole time. Any difference in how the voice sounds we can chalk up to the time skip. lol

He thanked him alongside Mike, so maybe Bolton handled some pick-up lines (as director) when Mike was busy elsewhere.

I think someone can make an "imitation" his own. He'd only be imitating the pitch of the voice, not the deliveries of each line. Those would be all his own.
Anime News Network is talking about this! https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2019-09-27/funimation-reveals-english-dub-cast-advance-ticket-sales-for-one-piece-stampede-film/.151592
I'm picturing how Chris portrayed Arlong, and yeah, I can see how his voice could provide his own take on Blackbeard.
rip Cole Brown tho. He was perfect

yep, I used to watch that clip of him saying dreams never on youtube daily back in 2009. Good luck to the new voice I guess.
Agreed. I can't imagine a better Blackbeard; the new guy has his work cut out for him. Cole Brown was one of the most perfectly suited voices on the show–not to mention a great actor.
Has the tickets went on sale yet for you guys???
Just bought mine.
I got the email about 45 minutes ago that they're now on sale.
Naturally, there's an important work event going on that entire week encompassing the different days it's playing, so I can't make the Saturday one, but I should be able to go on weeknights, no problem.
Planning to see both the subbed and dubbed versions.
I have REGAL UNLIMITED, so I think I'll just try to get the tickets for free the day of. I sincerely doubt the dub will sell out or anything. I'll just get there early; there's something like seven theaters in my area playing it, and it doesn't seem to be listed as any sort of Fathom event or anything.
Does anyone know why the tickets are so high like 14 a pop, i had wanted to take the kids(3) with me smh
No where near me is going to have the movie, so I basically have to wait for the bluray release.
Does anyone know why the tickets are so high like 14 a pop, i had wanted to take the kids(3) with me smh
Woot woot. Support the series! Have more kids and bring them! Adopt! Borrow your neighbor’s kids!
