That's the point. ._. One Piece has the love of Funimation going for it. NO ONE Does like 500 episodes for a project they dont love and believe in. If it wasnt it would have joined Toriko, Detective Conan, and Sgt Frog on the list of Funimation's failure to launch titles.

Funi continuing to dub One Piece has nothing to do with love or belief. It's all about money and sales.
-
Ok, Sales and Money are THE most important. Yes.
Also on less depressing news Toei is offering One Piece in the Licensing Expo!
This could mean lots of exciting things! I cant wait for news!

What does that mean? That Funimation isn’t picking it up anymore and Toei is looking for new buyers? Or is it merchandising licenses?
-
That mostly for merchandise stuff.

Uh….it's not the first part at all lol. FUNi still has it and it's just for merchandise which FUNi also has the license for. If you're using that logic then they wouldn't have Super either lmao

Haha. I wasn’t using any logic. That’s a string of questions. No idea why they’d need to have an expo or presentation for licensing when they could just call Funimation directly. Not sure of the function of this event

A lot of companies does these licensing expos. From what I learn from listing to one of the most recent episodes of Something to Wrestle with Bruce Prichard. Even WWE and WCW were part of these events, its mostly for the international markets from what I understand.

I know Funimation had a good hand in One Piece merchandise licenses over here. In my business I can occasionally order figures from Good Smile, Bandai, and other Japanese toymakers at cost (perks of the job rock sometimes haha). And when I ordered a Pudding figure for my fiancé as a gift for catching up in the anime (which she finally did last month after a 2 and a half year journey) I noticed there was a Funimation logo sticker directly applied to the box. I'm glad Funimation has hit a point of financial security where they can do things like this and Simuldubs. With anime constantly battling online piracy, I'm glad to see when companies can still do well in spite of it.

No! Like most here said its for License Buyers for Merch…and TV Deals. I know in the USA the chance is probably Zero but it could always get sold somewhere else.

There's always Netflix.

Thanks, brother.
Mister Rogers is such a saint.

So do we have any clue how the film gold tv special did? Curious if it sold well enough that we could get more.

That’s a good question (that we’ll never know the answer to.)

One Piece Podcast usually gets these type of answers when they interview people from FUNimation which is why I asked.

God I just hope to god they get into Punk Hazard in the fall…
EDIT: Watching the commentary for the Big Mom episode, it seems Mike was confused about the order of coming arcs, thinking the stuff with Big Mom is coming up sooner than it is. Huh.

I'm guessing he has not been watching the anime in subs. That would explain why he got confused for a minute. Dub only people always want to watch the anime from a fresh view.
-
Yeah I know he says he doesn't watch ahead. But it was interesting he assumed Big Mom was coming that soon. But to be fair, the stuff with her is kind of intertwined with Caesar and Doflamingo to a degree, since all of the events kind of ride off each other.
-
I finally got through the Fishman Island episodes. I thought Big Mom's, Pekom's, and Tamago's voices were good. Pekoms and Tamago sounded different than I thought they would after seeing the cast for those two characters. The only role I've heard Chris Guererro do is Moriah, so the way he voiced Pekoms really took me by surprise.
One thing I thought was weird was in episode 571, Kid is mentioned by Sanji to have had a bounty of 100,000,000, which is incorrect. I checked the subs, to compare lines and the subs used "more than 100,000,000". Sanji wasn't even onscreen, so it's not like there were lip flaps that needed to be matched.
Also I'm pretty sure Mike keeps up with the Japanese anime and/or manga for One Piece, as well as any other ADR director for the series. If he was confused it's probably because he's been busy with other stuff, and hasn't needed to call on details of One Piece like that. I haven't heard the commentary, since I wait to buy the collections, so I don't know specifically what Mike said.
-
Nah he says he purposely doesn't watch too far ahead, like more than one arc ahead, so he can keep things fresh in his mind. Which makes sense. But he also says he does look further ahead for characters he's told will play major roles for consistency.
-
So will we get all the new voices on this next set even though a filler takes up a third of it?
-
So will we get all the new voices on this next set even though a filler takes up a third of it?
Nope, since several of members of the Don Quixote Family (Lao G, Giolla, Baby 5, Machvise, and Buffalo), Vergo, and Momonosuke doesn't appeared until Second, Third and Fourth Voyages each.
-
Ah. No Virgo. At least we’ll get Kinemon and Cesar. Don’t care much about all the small fries. We’ll get Monet, too.
Will be interesting to hear Smoker again. I remember not loving his VA’s performance in the past, but we’ll see how he does now.
Just rewatched the dub for Film Z now that my SO can watch the whole film without my having to skip scenes (now that she knows about the Akainu v Aokiji fight). I’d forgotten how well-animated and well-directed that film is. And it’s really tightly written, too; there isn’t a dull scene. By one odd catch was that one of the do-dads on the train track said, “Los Angeles Cal.” Guess the artist got a little too close to his reference image. If there’s one major flaw of the film it’s its own self-importance. They tried too hard to make Zed fit into the world and backstory of OP; I feel like they didn’t try so hard (or need to) with Tesoro or Shiki. Better to make someone epic by present actions and jeopardy than backstory; shiki felt more threatening because of the havoc he was causing and his kidnapping, whereas Zed has a touching story but doesn’t really feel as threatening. Still like Strong World the most of the films we’ve got dubs for—but probably just because it’s the most fun. Film Z’s writing is technically tighter.

Solicits for September won’t be out until Monday?

It's been a really long time since I was last around. Ahhh….the life of an archaeologist.
Hope everyone's been doing well.
Zephray, I get what you're saying about the backstory and Zed not being as threatening. But I also think that was the whole point. To make Zed more of a grey shade than something closer to black or white. Film Z proved to be my favorite of the films partly for this reason. I think it gave more depth to a character than what we normally see. Most of the time, it's really unquestionable just which moral camp a character falls into. Aokiji and Kuma are the only other ones, off the top of my head, that come close to being a grey shade. Another element being that they were able to logically and seamlessly integrate it into the anime, unlike Gold or Strong World. I think if anything of the film is flawed, its the concept of the endpoints.
Speaking of which, again since I've been away for a while, any word on 3D2Y? Or if we are getting Hands Up for the Punk Hazard arc? S9V4 is the latest set I have at the moment.
-
No news on 3D2Y or Hands Up or Punk Hazard. On Monday September solicits will be out, and we’re praying Punk Hazard along with them.
Certainly I appreciated that Zed was complex, but my argument was that I wanted to see that complexity more by current actions than via plotdump backstory. I think where you’re misunderstanding me is that you’re assuming a character needs to be black and white simple to be threatening. I was just saying he needed to be more threatening and I didn’t want so much of his character to come through backstory; that doesn’t mean I wanted him to be less complex. A complex villain can still be very threatening.
Fujitora is another more complicated character. Oda has so many characters that to differentiate them all from each other he has to give into quirks and archetypes sometimes.
-
Funimation September releases is out. No New One Piece, but One Piece collection 22 is coming out on September 25th.
-
Season 10 shouldn't be too far off now
-
Last year we had 9 One Piece releases (Collections, Seasons, Movies, and Specials). And through at least the first 9 months of this year, we'll only have 3.
Meh, at least the manga comes out consistently with no theme songs or whatever to delay it so there's still that I can look forward to. -
This is so frustrating.
-
At this point, could it be fair to say FUNimation stop caring about the dub/dvd releases since Toonami dropped the show? It's clear their focus is on simuldubs like MHA and they probably put priority over shows like that than One Piece at this point

Yo but what does “stop caring” even mean.
-
Yo but what does “stop caring” even mean.
The same thing I've been telling you duds right from the start - One Piece failing to live up to it's success in Japan continuously bites it in the ass in the states and now it plays second-fiddle to all the recent new shows because it doesn't preform as well as they do.
My Hero Academia, Black Clover, Attack on Titan, hell - even Fairy Tail - do better for FUNimation and it shows by how much they're advertised and how frequent their releases are when they have stuff to release. Better believe when FT starts airing it's last season in the fall, FUNi will make it a simlu-dub and be quick with it. Same with all the other heavy hitters.
Meanwhile, more and more, One Piece's dub will fade into obscurity along with Toriko, Sgt. Frog and Detective Conan. It took a lil longer than those shows to join the failure pile, but it's heading there all the same. I know FUNimation. When they slow down or outright stop with NEW releases, even though there's plenty of show left to dub… something is amiss. This is the age of simludubs - MHA gets a same-day dub. FUNimation knows that's what people want so thats what FUNi gives people. Knowing that, if FUNi is not even bothering to pick up the pace for OP's dub - then the answer is obvious unless you're a delusional optimistic fool who forces themselves to look at unrealistic outcomes despite logic and reality repeatedly hitting them in the face (ahem)... It's no longer a priority or of importance due to lack of interest and I wouldn't be surprised if they cease production on dubbing this series soon enough.
Toonami's cancellation of it should have raised red flags.
Then there's that interview with FUNi that seemingly has them admitting that OP is too expensive to dub faster. Hmm. They seem to dub other shows with a good brisk pace just fine... why not OP? It almost seems like the profit just isn't good enough to spend more money and time to dub faster. Hmmmmmm.
Look -- I hate to say I told y'all so...but... It's time to wise up and see things as how they are. Read the atmosphere. How FUNi does things. And make an educated guess like I have paced on the current environment. Just because it's a pessimistic outlook, doesn't make it any less true or less likely. Because things are looking.... like I'm right. Sorry. guys.
Better just be content with the manga and sub - because that's the only thing we're probably gonna have pretty soon. And curse America... Curse America for damning such a great series.
Oh well... this is where the anime turns terrible with the pacing and production values anyway, so meh. We also have to look at that One Piece.... is unfortunately a never ending series nearing 900 episodes. It's an extreme commitment and I wouldn't blame FUNi if they wanted to FINALLY cut their losses with a show that under-preforms and seemingly has no end - That's exactly what Toonami did. No one can say the company didn't try. They tried.
Buuuuuuut.... I think this is appropriate --

Unfortunately, you do make a good point there. Sad to say it but you might be right. Either way, I do hope it does find a way to continue. No matter what happens in the future though, it is not a matter of IF they will bring Season 10 out, it is a matter of WHEN since they have indeed dubbed Season 10, based on various tweets and interviews I have read in the past. A couple of months ago I had the honor of meeting Colleen in which I did manage to ask her where they were up to in the dubbing process of One Piece. She wasn't entirely sure, though she did mention a few things. Now all this sounds foreign to me since I don't follow the Manga or watched One Piece subbed, I only watch the dub. But anyway, she mentioned something about the Straw-hat's stuck in each others bodies (?) I am going to need clarification on this. And also she has dubbed the end of the battle with Caesar Clown. So that is good enough for me to know they have more to release. But in the end, I do believe that because of the ongoing Simuldubs that FUNimation are doing at the moment, and also licensing issues with the next theme song, my have something to do with why they have not released any new One Piece yet. They may also want to do touch-ups on the episode already dubbed or dub further into the next arc before starting to release Season 10.
-
It shouldn't be a surprise that the likes of My Hero Academia and Attack on Titan take priority, as those seem to be big 'gateway' series where Funi will want the general-audience-friendly dub out ASAP. With Fairy Tail, Funi was "only" 100 episodes (eight 2-disc releases) behind when their first DVD came out. The One Piece DVDs are over 260 episodes behind, which even on a consistent non-stop monthly schedule would take around two and a half years to catch up; 'Season 10' will have had a 5-6 year delay between English and Japanese releases. Funimation's releases of the TV series are and always have been back-catalogue. With that in mind, it makes sense on the back-burner; How many people are less likely to buy Punk Hazard after six years over five and a half? Conversely, how many people will watch MHA dubbed on a six month delay over a two week delay?
So no, I don't think One Piece is doomed in the west, but I suppose there's no real way of knowing for sure.

The switching bodies thing happened in season 10 also.

Oh Joy. Roman Mack again.
-
Right. Roman’s penchant for extremism is unmistakable. I mean, OP is obviously on the back burner, but we’ve had delays/hiatuses before—and worse ones than this where we at least know the next season is dubbed. It doesn’t mean the show is close to cancellation. I’ll bet you anything it’s either the theme song or Blu-ray rights (more likely the former) that’s slowing this down. Cancellation isn’t even on my mind; they’re just releasing at a slow pace.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
If you scroll through funimation’s facebook, they’ve posted about one piece plenty of times. It isn’t in danger of cancellation; stop making me roll my eyes.
-
Ugh. Now it'll be at least October before we get a tiny bit of Punk Hazard.
-
One Piece has been on Funimation's back burner since Simuldub became a thing, that's a straight up fact. I don't remember where, but someone interviewed Mike or Colleen or Sabat and they said something along the lines of, "Simuldub is top priority, it's high stress and the deadlines are fast, but One Piece is great because it's consistent and whenever they get a free time, they go back to working on it and its relaxing cause at this point they understand what needs to be done"
So while I don't think they will expand the brand, like picking up the other movies or dubbing games, I think the dvd releases are fine. And the most likely cause for this current hiatus has to be getting the rights to "Hands Up" cause I can't think of any other reason, outside of doing more simuldubs currently than before
-
With these recent delays I figured it would only be a matter of time before I saw something like this again…
Part of me wants to respond by picking apart some of the misrepresentations and exaggerations that is quite common in these types of posts, but…………maybe I shouldn’t even bother; history has shown that this type of conversation is an endless cycle of frustration that never leads anywhere good (and its just a general pain).
But I will say…
Look – I hate to say I told y'all so...
Romanmack claiming he hates to tell people about the same thing hes repeated hundreds of times over the past ten years…that’s quite the funny joke
-
It’s gonna be unfortunate when OP gets dropped or “sat on”, but hilarious to see all your optimistic views get flushed right down the toilet. Till the promised day, then!

FUNis FB page posts mostly about the sub.
I should say OP itself isn’t what’s unpopular. The sub continues to be one of the most popular in viewership. It’s the dub that no one cares about, hense why it’s being forgotten about.
Think about it like this - we’re dealing with a company that releases dubs quick. Meanwhile OP’s dub is releasing slower and slower. Think about it. Really think about it. If it was selling… if it was succeeding... they’d want to dub it as fast as their other stuff. But they’re not - that’s the key. That’s what we have to look at. If you put some thought to it youll see that the fact that OP’s dub release is super slow in an age of instant dubs is really really bad news.
That’s the likely reason, not this foolish “They’re trying to lisence Hands UP for years!” fallsafe to make you guys feel better about the situation.
-
You’re an extremist because in you’re mind something is either selling super well or going to get canceled. There’s room in the middle. We all know it isn’t hotcakes, but we all also know that it isn’t doomed to be cancelled as you think it is. Take your extremism elsewhere; go join a political forum or something.
-

One Piece needs to deliver on the basis that it’s a never ending series. It’s gotten by before, but now since simludubs are a thing, you’d think OP would at least get a normal release schedule… but it’s gotten even slower. That tells me that all the new series FUNi has receives priority. While OP is stuck in perpetual limbo. I mean, when we get down to it - even if FUNi doesn’t drop it.... is this any fitting fate for this series? Is this the best we can get and something we should accept? Are you guys really that desperate for more dubbed OP that you’ll be ok with how it’s being treated? You guys just think pessimism never becomes reality. And bless your heart for that, but that’s not the way the real world works.
Take it as you will, though. I’m not ignoring the signs. I know this isn’t good news for the dub. Continue with the false hope though. shrug
-
-
Continue talking about season 10 and beyond eventually coming out then.
Does everything need to be good news for you guys?
Lol I swear this forum is the only one that refuses to believe the dub may be in trouble. Everywhere else takes the news with indifference, if it happens it happens and they wouldn’t be surprised.
You guys though, geez. You refuse to give up the ghost. Can’t even discuss different possible outcomes with you guys because you refuse to talk about the negative ones.
-
Season 10 being delayed isn't even a bad thing. First off, it means that they are giving it the time and effort it deserves rather than rushing it out, just for the sake of catching up. And secondly, it means I don't need to spend money of the dvds as frequently lol
