Brandon Sanderson is amazing and Stormlight and Mistborn are well worth reading

@Greg I don't know how much overlap there really is between the OP and Cosmere fanbases, but it feels like it should be a decent bit. Lots of common appeal there.
I think you could even draw a comparison in the ways they handle broad, obstinately clashing worldbuilding elements. Oda wants to stuff everything he finds fun and interesting into this one universe - from robots and clones to fantastical dragons to fairytale lands of living food - even those things don't intuitively go together, but the isolation of the island-hopping setting lets him build up each element in its own space, where readers can get used to it on its own terms, and work from there into the thrilling crossovers and interactions.
Magics and races in the Cosmere get to breathe the same way before they come together, and having each in their own space makes it easier to cover pesky worldbuilding questions like 'why doesn't the more overtly powerful and less resource-intensive systems like Allomancy and Surgebinding immediately dominate and make the more subtle ones like Awakening irrelevant?'
The separation of it all also means magic can still feel magical when a worldhopper stops by and starts doing things no one local thinks is possible. The idea of (in the superhero metaphor) 'when everyone is super no one will be' only works on a world by world basis, because a Magneto, no matter how unremarkable their skills are on Magnetoworld, has completely changed the rules of engagement just by setting foot on Wolverineworld.
I'm sure there are Japanese translations for a decent chunk of the Cosmere by now, but I'm guessing Oda isn't a guy with a whole lot of reading time. If and when the much talked-up Mistborn movie ends up happening I'd be interested to know if he sees it and what his thoughts are.

Have you read Secret Project 1 yet, Greg?

The Lost Metal addressed that preeeeetty keenly.
A: "You can just MAKE a door?! That's magic!!!"
B: "Um...hello? Your buddy can FLY?!"
A: fails to see the point
If and when the much talked-up Mistborn movie ends up happening I'd be interested to know if he sees it and what his thoughts are.
Depending how things go, he may or may not be in the mood for any live-actions.

I just started Tress! It's weird and I like it.
-
I absolutely love Tress. I knew I'd dig it from the conceit of why he created it, which I don't want to spoil, but he talks about when he did the initial read along of it. I didn't realize it'd become one of my 3 or 4 favorite Cosmere books. I hope it delivers for you.
As for adaptations, My guess is that whatever is happening with Mistborn is already within the works and we'll hear about it either this year or next year. I'm pretty sure he alluded to as much in his State of the Sanderson address.

It had some great first inter-magic interactions for sure. I wish that whole section could have been a tiny bit better fleshed out, but it was a good taste of what's to come.

This feels mildly ominous, but I'm guessing it's as much about the fans' ability to open their minds about the new format and give it the support it needs to take off as it is any sign of the show's quality.
I also thought Tress was completely delightful. Probably the most unique and compelling setting I've seen anywhere since Stormlight.
-
I think I should give Sanderson's books a go. I'm a huge Stephen King fan and especially a Dark Tower junkie, so all this talk about genre fusions really perks up my curiosity.
Talking about The Dark Tower, there's a series I think every OP fan should try.
-
@FatDogForMidTerms I liked the Dark Tower all the way through, but I only loved the first half. Things get a bit weird in that classic Stephen King ending kind of way after Wizard and Glass. And the actual ending was definitely not what I would have done with the story up to that point.
I figure a lot of OP fans would like a lot of fantasy for the worldbuilding and longterm stakes escalation, but most fantasy I've read go for more of a tangled political web kind of building rather than multiple isolated mini arcs that collide after. Plenty that reach the same point of having every corner of the world feel populated and historied, but via different means. Things like Wheel of Time and Malazan scratch that same itch of 'this world is huge and something is happening everywhere' but I wouldn't say they're in the same style as OP.
I'd maybe say the Dresden Files has some structural similarities, escalating from basically standalone case of the week stories to proper fantasy epic the way OP grew from the short East Blue-era arcs to the sweeping global conflict it's at now, but Dresden's lore and world never get quite as expansive as OP or any of the above series.
The Expanse is a good read/watch for anyone who likes the aspect of a single crew staying in focus and the series doing its worldbuilding and letting the politics grow more complex while keeping the POV narrowed down instead of headhopping all over the universe. And is just an excellent story even if you think an OP comparison is a stretch.
-
Sanderson is great, probably my favorite ongoing author. After buying the deluxe leatherbounds and his kickstarter he's certainly one of the ones I've spent the most money on.
I just got my copy of Tress yesterday so I haven't started it yet, but I'm looking forward to it.
We also have a thread for Sanderson's stuff if you want a more in depth talk on his stuff. Its only a couple pages in because he just kind of got discussed in the Wheel of Time thread for several years until the kickstarter demanded he get his own thread.

Oh I loved the ending, but I totally get that it was divisive. The weirdness factor goes through the roof in those last books and if you like weird (i do) then the story just gets better and better.

He came back after his previous encounters with Emperors in the past, so maybe he’ll come back again.

Kidd is not dead.

Tbh I hope kidd is dead him comming back doesn't add much to the story

Ace got defeated by Whitebeard and became a commander of his, so maybe Oda could possibly have Kid change in such a way that Kid will become a commander for Shanks.
-
@Greg, considering that you mentioned quite a bunch of times the possibility of Blackbeard appearing at the end of Wano (possibly to finish off Kaido and get his fruit), and now that Shanks has mentioned that he went there because he expected him to appear, is it possible that it might be a meta commentary from Oda about how some things from the Wano epilogue had to be changed or dropped?
After all, Blackbeard going after Hancock and being interested in getting her power wasn't something that was easy to predict. And even if we had learned that he was interested in going after a Warlord, I'd say most would have predicted that it would have been Weevil because the Rocks stuff behind the scenes (Stussy and Whitebeard) and him declaring that he has to get revenge against Teach in his very introduction (chapter 802), or maybe even Buggy to use him as ransom against Shanks (lol).
Really curious to hear your input about all of this.
-
If your looking for a series with a similar vibe to One Piece I’d say Tower of god kind of does that
https://www.cbr.com/tower-of-god-webtoons-one-piece/
EDIT: Greg did you foresee Black Beard showing up Egghead? What do you think happened to Garp and the rest of sword who went to get Coby back from Black Beard? Will this be a three way war between Straw Hats, Marines led by Kizaru and the BB pirates? Also what do you think York told S-Snake she didn't want destroyed?
-
@Greg I saw a comment made by Oda about the name 'One Piece', something like "'One Piece' is such an interesting name, isn't?", around 2003 or so. Databook? Or an art collection magazine? I can’t remember unfortunately.
-
@Greg After reading through partially I saw something about Panda man, I can't tell when last I saw him or it came up, it seems he have been forgotten by fans and Oda.

@One-Don-Requelme He appeared on the last page of chapter 1076

He was just in the manga a few chapters ago.
Chapter 1076, Page 17. First panel. And I know he was in the 1050's a few times.
He's not forgotten at all, just people don't go crazy about the gag after 25 years. He still shows up every 15-20 chapters, sometimes for multiple chapters in a row.

Personally I'm bummed that we haven't seen Tomato Gang....

@Greg What ya think for other SHs getting CoC? And before you call me out as Sanji Stan again (which I am) I actually don't believe he will get it at any time.
I think Nami and Usopp might get it. Oda did jokes about it for both. They don't have to have aCoC or something for attacking but simple CoC.
What are your thoughts about it
-
Greg any idea of what a Booze Man who ate the Glug Glug fruit can do? Or will we see that in the next few chapters to come
-
How did Garp's ship fly? Did he ask Vegapunk to make him his own verison of coup de burst
-
He punched the water hard enough.
-
new column is up! https://one-piece.com/61304/index.html
-
Tbh that would be a lot cooler if that's how a garp did it
-
@funebre
For anyone interested on the topic of Greg's new column, it goes over the 50 Mark 3 and their possible role in the arc, he makes a comparison to the usual allies the Straw Hats befriend, not sure if he's joking around, but Mohji and Kuma both have ear shaped hair, so maybe they are related, Nami discovering jewellery might help in slowing down Kizaru, cause of their physical property of refracting light/distorting them. Imagine 7 Kizarus showing up, cause the "white" light got split up.Anyways glad to have his columns back, I think he mentioned that they are going to be released biweekly. Hope this is the start of it.
-
Hello! I've been selfishly enjoying spring break so please excuse my absence. A lot of questions were pitched at me and I'll try to get to them over the next week or two.
Yes! New column is up and YES this is the start of their return to a regular bi-weekly schedule. In fact, the next column is already undergoing approval and I'll be starting the NEXT one soon. I decided to start several chapters back because of all the break time coming up to try and make sure I don't catch up too quickly.
Unfortunately I already learned that the next column had to have some Figarland material cut... womp womp
-
@Greg did Garp speak to Dragon to learn that he saw Luffy off in Logue town or did hear about it? I've seen it been translated both ways
-
@Sun-D
I've also wondered about this before. Granted, it's not unlikely that Smoker mentioned it to people back at HQ or having had to report it since Luffy escaped, so to justify it.
But I do like to picture the interaction between Dragon and Garp. -
The relationship between Garp and Dragon seems like a super interesting one to explore. How did Dragon react to Garp defending Celestial Dragons in God Valley? What was the episode that made him create the Revolutionary Army. Seems like a duo in total opposition in terms of paths taken, but in agreement about the morals and ethics.
-
Say, Greg, do you think there are other models of the Fish-Fish Fruit, besides Kaido's?

Greg dumb question but is Oda looking forward to any video games? Like FF16 or Legend Of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom?

(even with that particular article already quoting this, it's the only part that really needs to be shared)
-

No dumb questions! Oda is an avid mobile game gamer but afaik he observes console gaming via his team more than plays them himself because of work/life.
Say, Greg, do you think there are other models of the Fish-Fish Fruit, besides Kaido's?
Being a 'type' suggests that there may be. If we're to believe they're ancient creations, we have to wonder how much humor their creators had.
did Garp speak to Dragon to learn that he saw Luffy off in Logue town or did hear about it? I've seen it been translated both ways
I don't recall what scene you're referencing and I can't go digging atm. If you (or somebody) has the scene in question available I'm happy to give a look!
Greg any idea of what a Booze Man who ate the Glug Glug fruit can do? Or will we see that in the next few chapters to come
I think I was pondering out loud on Twitter or something that he might be a neat foil for Jimbei if Oda messes with density and CERTAINLY flammability. Of course, a similar argument would be made for Sanji with potential fire vs fire but we'll have to see.
What ya think for other SHs getting CoC?
I mean....I don't dislike the idea. They're a crew of DEEPLY dedicated individuals. To themselves, their crew, and their captain. They certainly have similar drives and at this point, many of them the confidence and resolve.
But if we're to follow the statistics that Oda provided way back, then....it does seem a bit much. Counterargument though is....they're the crew of the freaking (future) Pirate King so...ya never know.

Right! So, BB appearing at Wano depended a lot on Elbaf. My thought at the time was the basically what's happening at Egghead right now (Strawhats and Marines/WG colliding to make worldwide headlines) was going to occur at the end of Wano. If that happened, it may have had to involved BB and if it involved BB, it meant he (and his crew) had to display a phenomenal show of strength that changed the rules of the playing field. This was shown to us by IMU instead and it happened in a very different way from what I (still) believe will happen at Elbaf.
The question I wrestled with pre-Wano and through Wano was:
HOW DOES THIS END WITH BIG MOM IN PLAY?
That was the puzzle I was trying to solve the entire time and depending on how that played out, it meant a different stage for BB.
I don't believe it's meta nor that Oda necessarily was going to end it that way since he was able to keep Mom away from getting trounced by the Strawhats so that she remains, not a main boss threat, but still an antagonistic force that is locked and loaded for resolution by the time the story is done. I believe her history will come into play at Elbaf, however, how she herself will play into it is, largely, I believe dependent on Wano's 'opening' if she is in fact stuck in a wall on Wano or heaven forbid, stumbling upon the secrets of Wano herself.
-
Well, if there are any other Fish-Fish fruits, while their animal forms would probably be pretty worthless, their hybrid forms, at least, could be like a Fishman.

I suppose it's possible based on all this that Blackbeard could try to coax what he believes to be the comatose bodies of Big Mom and Kaido out of the volcano by quaking them out in order to get their devil fruits, only for it to turn out they get re-energized in the process. Would be interesting to see how Blackbeard would deal with them in that situation.
-
Kaido and Mom probably don't need re-energizing. I....think Kaido might be of the mindset that since Luffy beat him, he's happy to sit back and watch the little snot-nosed f---er work his magic. I think Kaido is a dude to stand by his declarations, esp. ones to his crew so once Luffy beat him, it's very likely that he's the type who is comfortable accepting his role in history and watching what unfolds.
Mom however!!!!
While Mom herself has been bested, she still has beef with the Strawhats unrelated to Wano so she could realistically pursue them. Esp. with the Pudding setup.
I do believe who Kid was looking for may have a role related to Elbaf and that may play into a...gathering...of sorts.
If that's the case, it sets the stage for what I originally believed:
Loki, Mom (Pirates), SHs, and BB at Elbaf.
That way we get a giant arc, Mom resolution, SH prog. and finally, the establishment (not resolution) of full-on BB v SHs.
CG is a wild card akin to the Seraphim and I dunno how they could weave in, but if the giant story isn't meaty by itself, they could be folded in as well.
That would be my ideal lead in to the true final 'arc'.
-
Is Loki supposed to be a good guy or a bad guy? I’ve been reading Marvel comics since I was a kid so I always assume a character named Loki is a bad guy
But in Norse mythology I think he’s more of a trickster than a villain, except I think he has something to do with Ragnarok
What are your thoughts?
-
Loki becoming a more malevolent figure was due to the Christinization of Norse Paganism, like how Baldur basically became Jesus. He is indeed a trickster, and as a Jotnar, a figure of Chaos, but then, he's also a oath brother of Odin (Him being Odin's son and a brotherly rivalry with Thor is all Marvel) and helped Thor retrieve Mjolnir from Thyrm.

After your suggestions at how even Sanji could be a good matchup for Vasco, I would actually prefer that the Strawhats face different BB pirates first, before the final fight with their actual counterpart.
Ex: Sanji vs Vasco -> Sanji vs Burgess; Zoro vs Pizarro -> Zoro vs Shiryu; etcI also think Kaidou is just convinced that Luffy is indeed Joyboy, so he'll just let the kid change the world and maybe, very very discretly, give a hand by defeating a couple of bad marines.

The God of War take on Loki and the rest of the northern myths was actually pretty good, imo. I recommend it.
But in the original myths, he is indeed the figure that starts Ragnarok, so it's easy for him to get a bad rep. And he was not a "god" like the rest of the pantheon, he wasn't an AEsir. He was a Giant, a Jotnar, like Johnny said. It's easier to blame the odd one out.
The brotherly side with Thor is from Marvel but there are a couple of stories where they go on "adventures" together. But then again Loki did interact with most of the Aesir gods.
-
I think the best way we'll know where Loki stands is if the Royal Family of Elbaf has Aesir names like Thor, Heimdall, Tyr, etc. Or Jotnar names like Suttingr, Bergelmir or Farbuti.
-
@Cockycent that's the scene I'm referring to it's in chapter 432

I recall Kaido always wanted to participate in the biggest war the world will have ever seen, so in the event Oda uses whatever excuse he can use to eventually bring him back, that would prob be one of the top reasons. If it turns out he’s satisfied now that someone has beat him, then that would likely make itself more clear as time goes on.
