What franchise has actually had events in a film be 'canon' outside of manga adaptations? I'm genuinely asking because I haven't read many mangas, and I don't know of any films that are 'canon' outside of manga adaptions.
MHA seems to all fit pretty well. Naruto's movie where he hooks up with Hinata seems to fit. All the Takehashi films for Lum and Ranma and Inu Yasha and Maison Ikkoku fit just fine. Detective Conan and Cardcaptor Sakura. The Fullmetal ALchemist movie was terrible but it was post-series so it fit. Captain Harlock films work super well. I think all the Sailor Moon films work, though the one with the tree alien is really wierd overlap with the filler arc with identical tree aliens.
Those make the choice of not using anything from a current arc until the arc is done, or being set post-series so no random continuity exceptions come up.
I don't think any of the Yugioh filmms work because Pegasus is alive in those but I'm not sure if he actually died in the anime or not since we just got the censored dub, or if that was just in the manga.
Like film Red could almost fit... but then there's a couple characters in it that just shouldn't be around post-Wano but there was no way to know that until Oda finished the arc. And it can't be pre-Wano because the Wano crew isn't there and gear 5 is in it.
Strong World almost fits except it has stuff from right before the time skip but the crew is still together.
Ironically, the earlier OP movies all fit better because arcs were shorter then and they... could wait till an arc was done and just say "this event happened while travelling to the next thing" usually given a firm timeline spot in the end credits showing them meeting the next crew member.
