@Greg,
Do you think it is possible that the elder gorosei( sword carrying) has Wano connection? From some angles he has some resemblance with both Zorro and his master.

New column. https://one-piece.com/special/greg/detail/20201007_1179.html?l=en
Greg what does Oda think of your columns? I'm sure you've more or less answered that over the last few years but I'm curious. He ever get on you specifically for deducing a story beat too well?
-
the symbol is from the Hosokawa clan, who used to rule over Kumamoto, Odas hometown.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hosokawa_clanthe most famous Hosokawa samurai is actually Hosokawa Gracia, and her birth is name is Akechi Tama, yeah she was the daughter of the famous traitor Akechi Mitsuhide. And her given name, Tama, is written with the same Kanji as the One Piece's Tama.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hosokawa_Graciahttps://japanesehistoryenthusiast.wordpress.com/tag/hosokawa-gracia/
the helmet we saw behind Hawkins in this chapter also looks like Kato Kiyomasas helmet, the dude who built Kumamoto Castle.
happy i'm not the only one who noticed the helmet.

My take on it is that Oda is referencing an established structure and thus will keep it close to it. It’s like if Oda were to make a character recite a haiku: he wouldn’t change the basic haiku structure, or the reference is lost.
If kabuki theater typically has 5 acts, Oda will keep it 5 acts in Wano. Or else, why make it seem like a kabuki play at all?
The truth is they dont typically have 5 acts. There are plays with 3 acts, and there even plays with 31 acts! (yes you've read it well)
-
I know I'll be wrong. But while it's true that kabuki plays overwhelmingly have 5 acts - and Wano's not a regular play but a kabuki play so 3 acts is irrelevant - they can indeed have more as NamiRobinFrankyAce said. So since no one's predicting it, I'll go ahead and say Wano will have 7 acts, fully acknowledging that I'll most likely be wrong.

Maybe off topic, but I remember seeing on this forum a long time ago an image or images showing progression of the lunar cycle showing how much time has passed in One Piece. I can't seem to find that now. Does anyone remember / have a link to that post?

The wiki has a section mentioning the moon phase by chapter number. At least a start?

So here's the thing about kabuki acts. And I say all of this with full admission that Oda can and will do whatever the heck he wants, in any form he wants.
And this is why it's problematic to run to a wiki, read a wiki, and think you know what everyone knows about a given topic.
What you're reading on the wiki about kabuki, is a breakdown by people who know the nitty-gritty details of the given topic.
Looking up "How many acts does kabuki have?" on wiki is not the same as asking Tarou Q public the same question. If you ask Rando J-Person how many acts a kabuki has, you're probably going to hear the answer 'three' as their best guess.
Because that's the most commonly known breakdown.
Period.
That's not to say it's accurate. Or that those three even represent what we call acts.
But Jo-Ha-Kyu is probably the best widely known organization of kabuki.
"But the wiki says…!"
Yes, and the wiki is correct. It's also a textbook vomit of data, not living public knowledge. And that's what Oda might be basing it on.
And all I'm really trying to say with any of this is, even if it is 5 acts, don't expect every act to be massively long.
In fact, things are going SO WELL here for Luffy and co. that it's almost wildly suspicious.
Yes, I want to see this end in misery and then a relocation.
But that also takes a lot of time to build momentum and Oda is Mr. Rush-it these days so I dunno if he's going to allow himself to do that.
-
Do you know why Oda is in such a rush now? He went from going way longer than what he intended to in Whole Cake Island, to cutting corners in Wano?
What changed? Is he just tired (which he has every right to be)
And how much do you think he’ll leave on the cutting room floor? Is he gonna leave out big plot points that he set up like the rest of the level six prisoners? Or other characters backstory’s? Or even smaller arcs on different islands he had planned? Or other characters re entering the story like Buggy, Croc and Moria?
-
I'd say it's just OUTRIGHT wildly suspicious Greg.
How many times have the Straw Hats or an ally of theirs said "We'll never lose!" or some variation this arc? Lmao. -
I predict its gonna be 4 acts screw it

Glad that helped!
The infographic came from this page, and it looks like they have several others on the topic as well:
-
even if it is 5 acts, don't expect every act to be massively long.
.Pretty much everyone in the side of the 5-Acts structure have agreed that act 4 and 5 can and will be much shorter, no one's really expecting that.
The outside world events and the feeling that you're consuming a very long arc in several smaller chunks, makes the reading more enjoyable and its most of the reason we support a 5 Acts structure arc.
I'm feeling that your finally joining us in the dark side((heavy Darth Vader breathing))
-
Arc can’t be 5 acts long. Straw Hats are much stronger than the 2 Yonko
-
@Greg. What are your thoughts on the current chapter and prospect that the Big Mom Pirates, as well as the former Whitebeard pirates show up and fight each other?
This chapter confirmed BM isn't likely to betray Kaido at this point, since Marco specifies the deal to defeat Kaido is off because of this, I feel like the reason to keep the BMP away is now moot and they should be (partially) dealt with this arc. Even Carrot is looking to settle things with Peros, and I feel like the other BMP were were put out only so they could have a big entrance soon.
On the flipside, a chapter title dedicated to the "Remnants" of the WBP when only Marco and Izo are present seems pretty on the nose about them showing up. Not to mention, Marco alone probably can't block the entrance to Onigashima, so potentially having an secondary war between the BMP and WBP is possible?
-
Wano as a whole seems like a pretty closed system now, so I honestly don't anticipate any new arrivals unless they are explicitly called to action (party in my mind here is CP-0, and even then that relies on Orochi being alive and wanting them to back him up).
-
Huh, Vibre cards revealed Morgans to be the Albatross fruit user, so not feathery minks. Boas? No birdfolk, only mamalfolk and fishfolk (with cephalopodfolk included).
I'm checking the list of devil fruit users in wano, that must have eaten their fruits in wano by the nature of the country:
- The old woman who had Bon chan's fruit
- The old man with Bartolomeo's fruit
- Orochi himself
- Kanjuro
Then the retainers: - Kinnemon with the cosplay fruit
- Raizo with the maki fruit
- Shinobu with the root fruit
and then… the why...? - The fox that turns into a human and is Kawamatsu's friend
- Tama with the pokemon trainer fruit
- A random teapot that has recieved sentinece from the tanuki fruit.
That's ignoring the Oniwaban who's more outlandish powers ("Transformation", "Float", "summoning") depending on how much practical effects or how much ninja magic is, could easily be a devil fruit, and the users that we don't know from where they got it, like Toki.
It could just be that Oda wanted legends and yokai and magic in the country, and not make a separate magic system for wano, as with mantra being assimilated back into haki, and probably fishman karate, and all forms of "ki".
What if there is an in world reason because the high concentration of devil fruits in wano? The whole four seasons thing, if the country has all 4 weathers, you could theoretically have any kind of fruit at any time of the year.
-
There does seem to be a much higher than average amount of devil fruits originating in Wano.
Some that I'd exclude from your list though because they most probably got their fruits in a different time are the old hag and the old geezer. The tanuki and Tama's devil fruits have been very recent additions by the way and might even have been imported by the beast pirates as far as we know.
Still, for all the traveling that the SH's did, they didn't bump into even one of them and we hardly saw anyone just finding one somewhere or devil fruits randomly popping up so who knows Wano might be the source or close to the source?
Now that I think of it. From the people we know how they got their devil fruit, they all got them from someone else, like Law got his from Rosinante, Luffy "got" his from Shanks, Sabo "got" his from Doffy, CP-9 got theirs from Spandam, Blackbeard stole his from Tatch and from WB,… They only instance that I can remember where a devil fruit randomly showed up was the Hito Hito no Mi in Drum Kingdom.
I don't know if this signifies anything. I just thought it was an interesting side-note.
-
Just remembered we have a friggin Tengu as well somewhere.
Oda could have created a new species and be done with it. In fact, he probably did, with King being a winged race outside of the Shabody menu (granted he could easily be skyborn from another island, Kaido has access to the sky islands, and we know for a fact that Skypeans and Bilikans had different kinds of wings, and Big Mom didn't seem to have a winged kid, other than that one dude with Magelan like wings), Pudding being a surprise triclops, and in this same arc, the Fire offshot creatures, the ones with weird hair.
He could also created a new technology like with dials and shabody coating, yet he opted to make them devil fruits users.
-

I'd put all DFs provided by the old hag Higurashi as under doubt, since she claimed her knowledge came from her travels in foreign lands, and may even have been a Rocks member (as she undoubtely knew Shiki personally). She was also seems very proficient in acquiring Devil Fruits, since presumably all Kurozumi fruits were provided by her.

Greg-senpai's newest column is up
-
-
Onimaru isn't a DF user.
Basically, assume all weird unexplained powers are devil fruit powers until the author states otherwise. It's a generalization that comes from an understanding of the series.
-
Karashi Renkon looks absolutely vile.
-
-
Is it the mustard or all the holes?
That plus the texture, color, what's in it, urgh. It ticks all my bad boxes. I cannot handle mustard at all.
-
Ooh, some still think Onimaru isn't a fox that ate a Human Human Model Daruma fruit? Huh. Okay! I get not thinking so but not 'wanting' it to be so, oof. Probably gonna be some disappointment there if they don't consider Oda's MO.
Also, the entirety of my ch.993 contents were cut. First time that happened. It was related to Who's-who and Bao Huang. Once again, another aspect that people might want to steel themselves if they're on the 'it's just magic, duh' train of thought.
-
If we can have special paper that tracks one's position and lifespan, I have no idea why special paper that can acts like a security camera can't exist as well.
I mean, I'm assuming it's a property of the masks they wear that allows this clairvoyance thing instead of some other sort of unrelated ability. We've seen a few background characters with those masks as well.
-
Yes, they have indeed been seen worn by several characters.
Including a cat.
And Who's-who seems to like cats.
And we've seen these characters reporting to Who's-who.
And Bao Huang already has a fruit of her own.
And we learned that the Tobiroppou are indeed in charge of special units.
And Who's-who wears mask. A mask that could display or at least aid in focusing on 'reception' of many images at once.
Just saying.
-
Didnt the guys from that island Chopper was sent to during time skip also have that?
-

It's entirely possible the design is one Oda has in mind for a certain style or theme, but I wouldn't add it to the red-string board of relevant connections.
-
Ok, it would be cool to see Who's Who having something like screen-screen fruit.May be his naming underline that subtly….
-
An interesting note, back in punk hazard when we see the underworld brokers observing the events that unfolded there’s a guy watching who has big horns. It hasn’t been confirmed, and maybe won’t be, but the silhouette looks like who’s who. Just adds a little bit to that surveillance idea.

Just to add, Who's Who also has the eye symbol tatooed on his chest, and he was the one that knew Drake had released Law (probably because someone or something had the eye mask on the room).

Oh man, doesn’t Who’s who also have the same eye symbol on his chest? How did I not notice that!
-
Yup. Wrote all that and more and it was cut.
However…I wasn't told why it was cut this time which is why I feel comfy talking about it, and why it could still be wrong.
-
Greg do you still think Usopp and Nami will beat Page One and Ulti even after having there butts handed to them?
-
Usopp has a track record of having his butt handed to him and yet he always comes out on top.
-
Usopp and Nami will finish these battles. They will be restarting with a huge head smashing set back and they will triumph over physically superior opponents as they generally do. I don't think their fight has "truly" begun.
-

And we all know that Usopp activates and kicksass only after his skull is broken.
-
If he'd been waring the sogeking mask he'd have been just fine!
-
Nami lost zeus when she needed him the most.
-
It will actually be kind of nice to see Nami handle herself against Ulti and Page One without Zues. At least establish that her tricks were enough to handle them before she gets him back for the final strike.

I hope your right
Also I would love if they teamed up like Greg theorized
Would be another callback to Alabasta (although it was chopper and Usopp that time not Nami)

What do you guys think happened to Caribou? What's his role in this story?
-
What do you guys think happened to Caribou? What's his role in this story?
Deambulating material supply.
Caribou and the fox guy will supply the samurai alliance with weapons, food, and whatever else they might need, maybe even ships. -
What do you guys think happened to Caribou? What's his role in this story?
At some point he's gotta drop the Ancient Weapon Bomb. He was the lingering Tamate Box a few chapters before the actual Tamate Box.Though I figure that won't come to light until the aftermath of Wano.
As said before maybe he'll be a last minute weapon stock for one side of the war.
-
Honestly I think its gonna be Nami/Usopp vs. Ulti specifically since that's how it seemed prior, maybe with Chopper coming through for Page 1.
-
No, I don't think it's gonna be 2vs1 like that. I'd bet on Ulti vs Nami since their interaction seemed more meaningful. But I don't know about Usopp and Page-One. I don't even know if Pay-Pay is gonna get a focused fight. We already had a chapter of Sanji manhandling him. Characters that get to show off before the climax don't usually get a actual fight later. For example, Baby 5 and Buffalo fought Franky in Punk Hazard, so they didn't really got fights in Dressrosa because they'd already shown what they could do. Same for Djola, she already showed off her powers in the Sunny, so she basically did nothing against Leo.
