The hype is palpable!

Hey Greg now that we know that the Vinsmokes abilities are not from the suit but from the DNA what are your thoughts about Stealth Black
Was it specially designed for Sanji the "failure" or was it always planned like this even if Sanji's powers would have been successful?
I just can't think of any fruit which would suit to match the invisibility. So maybe Judge, even if he is an asshole, still made it for Sanji the failure and even more… Make his wish come true.
But I still have no clue how old the comic strip is the siblings are based on
Further more do you think Sanji's powers may awaken later somehow?
-
It could be that Sanji's power was always meant to be stealth but he was a failure because he couldn't do it.
So his dream of being invisible came from his DNA not just from being a creep. -
Basically what Robby said. That and sometimes I write something in English but leave it out of the Japanese version. That way I don't know if I'm right or wrong ^O^ Dunno if that was the case there though.
Yes, I've had some major story stuff along the way spoiled because I was (unfortunately for me) too accurate. After the series is done I can talk all about that.
Not quite the same but I am on the One Piece Podcast this week!
Ask me again in a week.
….....
Something very strange is going on on the official One Piece twitter, I don't think it's a joke and am at least a little worried.
https://twitter.com/eiichiro_staff?lang=en Edit: As of 2:05pm CST they fixed it. The twitter changed its handle to "Buster Call" and the One Piece logo was glitched out. -
It went back to a normal state.

But the guys from north blue knew what it was… so it can not be a dna engineering. It is the suit.

I thought I saw electricity when Niji was clashing with Sanji. How was the suit thing still a question?
-
Greg, you got an idea why Oda didn't make Sabo female? He could have avoided the 100 percent parallel and could have brought up another female actress. Just shonen-reasons?
Edit: Just imagine Koala being Sabo… such history!
-

It's the classic Oda 'Grey Zone'.
Might be solely DNA. (I don't think it is)
Might be DNA-related and enhanced by the suit. (Probably)
Might be some other gadget. (Possible)
But there are any number of explanations until Oda says otherwise.
For the time being keeping an open mind would be prudent.

If I had to guess, from the era of his film and television interests he enjoyed the concept of three brothers for a shonen story.

Greg, I have heard your theory in the OPPC that Hancock and Mihawk are gonna get captured while Buggy runs away and I agree with that. But how would Oda make Weevil to get the upper hand against whatever the hell Vegapunks's invention(s) is/are WITHOUT making said new invention(s) looking unpromising to the general public (both in-universe and real life)?
-
Given we haven't even seen Weevil in action yet, there's nothing to it. We cut away from the scene, and don't see how they escaped.
The new robots aren't shown being underwhelming, and we don't know exactly how impressive Weevil had to be to escape. Not a biggie.

OMG now I'm even more excited for this weeks chapter!!!!
EDIT: Wait when you said next week did you mean Monday because that's when it's officially released in Japan? or were talking about when sacns come out next Friday (not this Friday)?

He's not talking scans…
-
I'm not saying if it's DNA or not because I can't keep up with SBS and Vivre Cards, plus the manga is long. I just know that it's not solely from the suit because there is use of the ability without the suit and think that at least that isn't a question mark.
I never questioned if the suit could enhance the abilities or not though. Thanks for that 1. It is something to consider because the suit is said to be activated through DNA.
-
Greg, do you think Oda has it in him to pull off something like 光月・鬼 D. 閻(魔)? Or 光月王 D.炎 I guess. 光月王電?
-
He's not talking scans…
That's what I thought just wanted to make sure lol
I can't wait to see what this chapter has in store for us now, and to hear Greg's opinion of it on monday

First, this depends on whether or not the Marines use this new whatever it is.
If they don't, they're buffoons…which they're not....but I do wonder if there are bigger fish to fry.
If they're using the whatever it is then Weevil being captured completes very little for the story in a logical shonen fashion. Not to mention, I find it hard for Oda to resist Weevil up against seemingly tough odds and just completely trouncing all of them without breaking a sweat. Not that he'd draw that, but we'd know it happened.

Oden is a big player and it's possible but…too many D's is like too many cooks. Right now it might be a bit much.

I would find it more funny if buggy is thrown back in prison.

Vivre cards confirmed it
Then I don't get why Judge doesn't upgrate every single clone soldier in his army.
Unless it's specific Vinsmoke lineage which can't be altered. But how weird would this be?

Buggy has divine plot armor. There is no doubt he'll escape

Could be you can't mix quick aging (they become 20 in 5 years) with all the other enhancements. Or simply he wants his family to be superior to the soldiers.
-
IIRC his wording in his argument with Sora kind of implied he wanted his children specifically to be powerful.
I think it"s pretty obvious he's that kind of parent that tries to achieve his dreams through his children. You know, the usual guy that fantasized about being a world class football player in his youth so now he forces his son to take up the sport.
In Judge's case, he probably has a complex because he was a weakling as a kid, so he turned his childs into super soldiers.

Same reason he doesn't give them the same super suits

https://twitter.com/eiichiro_staff?lang=en Edit: As of 2:05pm CST they fixed it. The twitter changed its handle to "Buster Call" and the One Piece logo was glitched out.It was hacked. They put a video saying Buster Call and a date in October. Don't know if that is a deadline or if they'll take down the page at that time. But it seems to be a hack….
-
Almost certain it wasn't hacked. That building was Shueisha and there's video surveillance at that exact location 24/7. We filmed a documentary there in 2013 and within 30 seconds of pulling out a video camera a guard came out to stop us (even though we had permission from the editor-in-chief at the time ^o^)
A viral campaign of some sorts. Might have been inspired by Bansky's recent popularity in Japan.
-
Yup. We should have seen it coming when all the ships entered the Shichibukai waters (no, I haven't read any spoilers but Koby is capturing Hancock for a reason). I'm glad that they did this prior to normal leaks, because now I'm speculating.
I wonder if a swordsman stronger than Mihawk exists? We'll probably see a name reveal once we get a flashback of Zoro vs. Mihawk.
-
The Buster Call thing? Don't think it has anything to do with the manga story.
-
Oh, really? I honestly thought it was a possibility based on the hints we've been given. I could see the Marines taking the Shichibukai out via Buster Call. Sakazuki has been talking about dissolving the Shichibukai for years and he's not the type to let a single threat to justice escape (as we saw during the Buster Call on Ohara).
Moreover, look at these scenes from the latest chapter. Don't they look familiar?
-
My bet on that buster call twitter thing is that it's some publicity stunt that went live before the right time.
They were probably testing something and made it public accidentally. -
Nah, pretty sure that was exactly as planned. Standard viral marketing procedure.
-
I betted it was premature because it stayed up only for a couple of hours, right?
That's not very effective marketing outside niche groups like forums about OP.Premature announcements/leaks are very common, they're just a misclick away. Just the other day, Sony meant to announce MediEvil's demo on their State of Play video, going live at night, but the japanese ps store had the preview up during the morning, for a few hours, before they realized it and took it down.
-
I betted it was premature because it stayed up only for a couple of hours, right?
Everybody is talking about it, yeah?
All according to keikaku.
-
Leaks and mistakenly showing things have been part of marketing in the last 8 years of entertainment. Even spoilers for movies like Endgame and some manga mags are trying to be ahead of scans by "adapting" their tactics. Idk if this is the case here, but it feels like it resembles it with this little move
-
Greg, you dont comment at all on the potential of new nakamas right? Id love to hear your opinion on it though.
-
Oda-san's story decisions (despite what other official materials have since long confirmed) require me to stay zipped on the topic until it's officially official in the most official way (^o^)

Does this imply that you have internal info on things like that?
-
I kind of interpreted it like Greg already knows who is joining and wont say anything until it’s official, so said character should be introduced already. 0_0
-

Whether as a result of column material or otherwise there are certain aspects I've been made privy to or stumbled on. As a rule I don't comment on them without a certain level of permission. That's why I was super vocal about cake theory or Drake despite them being correct; I had no idea those were going to be the outcome beforehand.
-
My money is still on Vivi. Too many tea leaves for me to ignore:
- Sai and Leo have a piece of Luffy's vivre card
- The Grand Fleet's big incident is happening soon according to Oda
- The "Alabasta incident" we learned of recently
- The Elder Stars' considering Cobra a traitor
- Im-sama having her picture
- Robin's missing number chapter
- A cheeky retcon "hint" (or to be fair, a full-fledged intended hint) of the "X" mark meaning "10" and thus 10th nakama
–-
There's a whole lot of material that's difficult to ignore although hey, it could be all for naught. I'm willing to bet money she eventually deciphered 3D2Y as well despite not being there. Toss her a logia and she should be fine to return.
Plus, it would be fun to see Brook's reaction to his discovery that she once tried to kill Laboon for food.
-
I think Vivi starting of as miss wednesday, a common goon and Oda just changing her into the princess Alabasta is against her joining, id like to believe Oda was already set on all crew members way back since east blue and he wouldnt change them a lot except for some minor details.

Zoro was originally going to be a Buggy goon and Jimbei was going to be an arc boss.
I'm more concerned about what's going on right now. Hence why I said the "X" mark would be a retcon "hint". It wasn't actually a hint at first but if she re-joins, all of a sudden it is.

Zoro Goon was going to join regardless, and never made it as a goon in the manga. Where as Vivis character changed into a princess after she was already introduced.
Never heard about Jinbei was supposed to be an arc boss though, do you have any quote to share on that?
-
I read somewhere that it was because her hair was like that of a princess, so he made more of a narrative for her. Oda is really a legend if this is true. Reminds me of that bit about wanting to spice up Sabaody or probably just the story in general, so he made the Supernova.
I do think that Carrot, Raizo and Kiku are the most possible as of now.

I've been spending the last few hours trying to find the interview where I read about Jinbe being an arc boss but I can't for the life of me find it. I'll just have to concede that point.
And nah, it's not the whole "A previous boss will join" thing. I recall it standing out to me because I sincerely didn't believe that Jinbe was ever intended to be an enemy and it took me by surprise because it implied that he may not have been planned as a nakama. But seeing as how I can't find the interview, it's moot.

ref whistle
I can see how this was misconstrued but it's not accurate.
At a JUMP Festa, Oda said that in Impel Down a former boss character (or former boss characters) would join Luffy. Yes, he used 'nakama' but it could simply mean 'his side'.
This was made clear with the likes of Buggy, Croc, Bentham, etc. joining sides with Luffy in order to escape.
I remember the craziness that ensued after that statement ^o^

People are still checking every arc villain carefully trying to guess who's going to join the crew.
-
It's kind of crazy that a misunderstanding from TEN YEARS AGO,that the meaning of which was made clear a few months later, is still confusing people today.
…People aren't still waiting for the Pirate Summit are they?

Well, Stampede did have the Pirate's Expo.
-
Im sure I read somewhere that Zephyr was supposed to get a mention in the manga, but Oda backed down from it, and no Im not confusing it with Shiki supposedly getting mention in the Whitebeard and Shanks meeting… or am I? Cant find the the quote were this was said anymore...
