Haters gonna hate. Luffy doesn’t have a straw hat in this week’s cover spread either…
As far as inanimate objects in OP go, I wonder if the fanbase would be more upset over the demise of Luffy’s Straw Hat over Going Merry.

The discussion if Luffy will give Shanks his hat back to Shanks or not, might be worth having. Another Davy Back Fight might be interesting, I was thinking a treasure hunting game involving the last Road Poneglyph.
I think he will get it back though. The when depends if Luffy buries Shanks or not. I also like the idea of Luffy going to Raftel -> Final War, while Blackbeard goes for an Ancient Weapon -> Final War, while Shanks tries to stop him.
Blackbeard throwing away the hat when he sees Luffy at the final war? Maybe too much.
-
Where are you getting the lion devil fruit from, in your theory?
Well, if we assume that both Teach and Luffy will receive one of each type of devil fruit in the end, it would make sense to me.
The lion has been a motif for a while now. The Thousand Sunny, the lion on his coat on Punk Hazard, Leo Bazooka, etc. It hasn't made an appearance in the series yet, so Oda is most definitely saving the King of Beasts for a reason…!
Alternatively, I could see Luffy getting the Monkey Monkey Fruit for similar, obvious reasons. Mythical Type: Son Goku, as an homage (he stretches like nyoibo, "Monkey D.", King Kong Gun, etc.). This may even be more likely.
Cause your theory is dumb and based on bullshit?
Luffy isn't losing his strawhat
I don't see you offering any well-reasoned points, just emotional responses intended to inflame. What was it that Bonolenov said in HxH? "Beasts often spout trash that matters not." Moving on.
@K.:

Agreed, because Luffy giving Shanks back his hat is a major plot point of the series… it has to happen. There was a reason why it didn't occur on Marineford.
Not to mention that the Davy Back fight is the only "filler" arc we can think of in the entire series—but it had a purpose. The Pirate Island that Blackbeard currently resides on is first mentioned during the arc. Davy Back Fights allow one to repurpose another crew's Jolly Roger and steal crewmates. If Luffy and Shanks compete, I feel as though it would be this way instead of through a typical pirate battle.

Ahh yes compared to your points of Luffy hair red in color spread thus Gear 5 is fire Luffy and thus he will be just like Teach and get three fruits and rename his pirate crew after Shanks.

There's actually a bit of evidence that could lead one to consider the possibility of fire Luffy. About Luffy having the abilities of three devil fruits though, it depends on two things that I'm not convinced of yet.
1. That Teach will certainly be getting a Zoan fruit or that he already has one.- Seems plausible, but I'd like to see it before I make any theories about Luffy based on it.
2. That part of Luffy's parallel's with Teach will include having multiple devil fruit abilities. - I could imagine Oda going with Luffy just having the Gomu Gomu or having two/three. I think if Fire Luffy is real we can at least say that the amount of abilities Luffy finishes the theory with with reflect how many Teach has.
Something I thought about while considering all of this. Some who believe Luffy will be able to access some of Ace's old abilities think that he inherited part of his will, which I agree with. That's the thing with D's right. What if all of the D's bloodlines had a passed down inherited will that any of them that truly exhibited that will could access. Assuming that's true, I could see Monkey Luffy/Garp/Dragon being a possibility. I only thought of this in response to gyuukarubi's theory though.
- Seems plausible, but I'd like to see it before I make any theories about Luffy based on it.

If a theory is presented without anything you can remotely call evidence, you can easily dismiss it without any counter evidence.

Except I did provide evidence earlier in the thread. I first mentioned the Fire Luffy theory in early January. The “Red Haired” part was simply me fleshing it out more after Oda revealed to have been hinting at Sanji’s Stealth Black raid suit and Zoro’s scythe in the same spread. If I continued along the same line of thought, it wouldn’t be farfetched for Usopp to learn Ninjutsu skills like Raizo’s Shadow Clone Jutsu.
Back to “Red Haired Luffy,” people seem to have forgotten that we have been given more insight into Shanks’ heritage. It was assumed that the Paramount War ended due to Shanks’ overwhelming strength, but he was also able to gain a solo audience with the Five Elder Stars at Levely… indicating that he may possibly be a Celestial Dragon, if not even higher in his status. If this is the case, then why did he begin pirating in the first place? Why did he inherit Roger’s straw hat? Why does Imu have a giant straw hat in cold storage? Why does Imu want to strike the lineage of Luffy, Blackbeard, and Star White from the historical record?
It seems to me that the straw hat itself may be an item connected to history and may not necessarily be Luffy’s crew name for the rest of time. The Davy Back Fight provides a plausible manner in which our protagonist’s Jolly Roger and crew name could change (and would explain its existence as OP’s only “filler” arc). And Oda literally, for the first time, has drawn “Red Haired Luffy.” Last year’s New Year color spread alluded to Jinbe joining the crew before it happened, too. It’s not like Oda hasn’t hidden messages in his art before either—he does it all the time (mostly for lulz).
Lord Monkey D, you do not have to agree, but I do not tolerate unwarranted rudeness or personal attacks because I choose to share new ideas.

The overall consensus seems to be that what you provided can't really be called evidence.

Except it's a sickle on a chain, not a scythe. Sanji having his mouth covered also barely qualifies as a hint towards his raid suit. If I continued along the same line of thought, it would be very farfetched for Nami to start wielding a gatling gun, Robin dual-wielding pistols, Sanji starting to use shurikens, Luffy using goggles and his hair turning red for no reason, …

The Straw Hat is obviously important which still doesn't explain in the least why Luffy's hair should suddenly turn red and above that, why would Luffy start calling himself the very same name his idol's pirate crew has? Also, I don't recall Luffy or any other Straw Hat having ever felt the need to call his group "Straw Hats", it's what other people aptly called them. Again, basing almost your entire theory on a minor detail in a color spread is not evidence.

No, that’s just something you decided on your own. If you’re so concerned about who gatekeeps approval to theories, why don’t you go back and see Greg’s initial response to it? I couldn’t care less about what consensus the masses decide; they’re usually wrong anyway.

Yes, Zoro has a chain-and-sickle while Sanji has a ninja suit on. I never said that Oda was drawing the exact same thing; just that the color spread alluded to powerups. You can’t deny the similarities. I also didn’t mention Robin or Nami because I didn’t have a good answer for them; I’m not saying I know everything. I don’t know if Luffy’s hair will look exactly like it did in that spread… but I do think that it could turn red or fiery. Even Sanji’s hair begins standing on end when he sets himself ablaze.

The red hair is a detail that Oda included in the manga, not me. He clearly did it for a reason, since this is the first time he’s ever colored Luffy’s hair anything other than black in over 20 years of publishing this series on a weekly basis. I don’t have all the answers, but instead of disparaging theories you don’t like, why don’t you also provide manga-based evidence that counters what I’m saying?

So far, there is only a handful of people who have commented on your theory and they all agree. I haven't decided anything. And if I remember correctly (feel free to refer me to his initial response, I can't be bothered to look for it myself), Greg has only commented on Luffy inheriting parts of Ace's Mera Mera no Mi which was a theory of his own long before you came around. It's good that you don't comply simply because the masses disagree but it still shows that your theory and your evidence is nowhere near convincing.

Luffy having purely red hair is exclusive to color and cover spreads which are non-canon. Gear 4 having a reddish tint is not represented in a black-and-white manga, I don't need provide evidence for that or any other counters because they can refute your "theories" by themselves.

I don’t mind disagreement and welcome discussion; I did not appreciate other poster’s immediate launch into personal attacks and ridicule. That’s a cultural issue. It’s fine if you don’t remain convinced, as I put my theory out there for the purposes of discussing it.
I also can't deny the similarities between the colors of a traffic light and pepper bells. I still don't draw further conclusions out of it and call it a theory.
The big thing left unspoken here is “narrative purpose,” which is at the core of my theory. I have a feeling that the Wano arc is the true “passing of the torch” moment from Ace to Luffy. There are too many coincidences for it not to be the case. Simultaneously, we have begun to see Luffy’s true transition into manhood. First, he learned to observe his surroundings. Next, he is gaining physical strength. All on his path to Pirate King; Luffy’s coming-of-age is coming to fruition.

The red hair is thus far exclusive to just one color spread. The fiery hair (not in color, but the way it stands on end) and fire shroud were first shown in a color spread featuring traditionally Japanese-style artwork (Nami, Momo, Cat Viper, Dogstorm, Kin’emon, Raizo, and Kanjuro also appear).
Also, I’m not talking about Gear 4’s reddish tint—Snakeman’s steam shroud literally starts turning into flames in the manga, as shown by the Volume 89 cover.
Feel free to refute anything. You’re respectful and reasonable in your tone, but any of you nerds who wanna step disrespectfully should expect a clap back ten times harder. I’m looking at you, Lord Monkey D.
Edit: Found it.

Not as shit as your theory that Sanji would never use his raid suit. That’s just looking at the past couple months too. Don’t make me go Blackbeard on yo ass like an archeologist.

Alright kiddos let's try to rein it in and keep it civil in here.

Oda ain't killing Sabo so the Mera Mera becames available in the first place. This may be something that would work in DB or Naruto but not here.

Hi,we all know Oda loves Game of Thrones, but i remember i've also read somewhere (maybe it was Greg who said it,or maybe was someone else) that Oda also watches Westworld and The Walking Dead. Does Greg or someone else know if its true? And what are the tv shows that Oda watches?
-
Yeah, he watches TWD. He commented on it in a weekly comment iirc.
As for WW, I sent him a letter in size 200 font that read
WESTWORLD IS AWESOME

So he started it and he loved it.

it's epic. one of the best series running around
i love those sophisticated shows and that you introduce oda to them  -
Greg, see if Oda will watch Spider-Man:Into the Spider-Verse.

@vlad:

i love those sophisticated shows and that you introduce oda to them :wub:I like the show to. But idk about it being "sophisticated"
To me it's just Being overly complex for no reason. And that Don't make a show "sophisticated". A series that's more simple can be that and better than WW.
Even so being sophisticated or forcibly trying to be some intricate plot don't equal good. One thing I like about series like One Piece is that it's about having fun, adventure, being fantastical and stories. Not trying to be some intellectual piece.
That part comes as an effect of just telling a good story
Plus the "sophistication" comes with it as it or has told a good story. Like Dragonball as very very very simple as some may claim as a martial art series. It's "sophisticated" especially with it's in Saiyan and Frieza sagas

Hey Greg, would it be possible for you to show this video game area to Oda sometime?
It's my favorite video game area of all time, and it's nearly impossible for Oda to have seen it. There's pictures of it floating around too if he can only look at a picture.

Got a romanization question for you, Greg. I noticed that in your most recent column, you chose to say “Colors of Armament” instead of the singular “color,” which is typical among fans. Was there a reason for this? Surely it couldn’t have to do with how Haki seemingly has levels now…

Do you guys think Moria will ever get into shape again? I assumed that he would do that during the time skip, it seemed like the perfect opportunity to get him into shape and stop relying on zombies, I'm not sure if it will ever happen now, I really hope it does though, I want to see how he fights in his prime

Same here. Thought he'd be workin on his abs after all he has been through. Heck, with his DF he could even cheat to get in shape. He made Oz into a ball. I bet this has to work vice versa on himself. The fact that Moria's still fat almost ruined BB's bounty-reveal for me.
Especially the shichibukai (former and actual alike, except for Buggy) haven't changed a bit during These 2 yrs. I expected minor changes like new scars or a different hair style (like Smoker).–- Update From New Post Merge ---
As for the Luffy getting red hair discussion:
Let's look at it from an "artistic" angle. Luffy is drawn pretty big in that spread. I guess Oda's decision to Color his hair red instead of black was to avoid a huge area being just plain black.
With the coloured hair he had the freedom to Show the hair strands going up (kinda like SSJs).
And Overall Luffy Looks like "red-filtered" in that spread (as you can see by the strawhat being in a pale pink).
Kinda like the grey-tone news-article in volume 70's cover (showing Hawkiddapoo-alliance).
Conclusion: I wouldn't interprete too much into a colourspread, even if the theme has the theme of the current arc.
You wouldn't say "Oh, Luffy is so gonna wear goggles in G5!" just because of the very same colorspread we are talkin about right now, would you?General question of opinion:
What do think would happen to Luffy's hair if:
Moria put some Mink-shadows into Luffy and it was full-moon?
Would Mink-shadows be able to make Luffy Sulong?
iirc Moria revived a bear-Mink-marine @ the summit war, but that was technically a corpse of a Mink (if it was a Mink at all and not just a common bear). -

And the goggles are a hint that something will happen to his eyes in fifth gear. The sheets of paper being circulated by the alliance on Wano showcase Luffy with fiery eyes, so I would imagine it may be an allusion to that.

iirc Moria revived a bear-Mink-marine @ the summit war, but that was technically a corpse of a Mink (if it was a Mink at all and not just a common bear). From what I remember, the fruit works this way: you get the skills and strength of the shadow owner, and a hint of his personality
when Oz got luffy's shadow, he became an idiot and had luffy's fighting skills, BUT the giant only stretched his arms because moria started stretching the shadow and not because he gained luffy's special ability (rubber)so if let's say luffy gets a shadow of a cat swordman mink, luffy will have a faster reflex, some swordman skills and maybe lick his hand like a cat for a bit, but he wont be able to generate electricity since he doesn't have the fur, and MAYBE not turn into a sulong if it depends on the physical bodies on minks and not just the instincts (else luffy will become a feral caveman)

Super important question, thanks for asking.
Nope, that's just the result of me not being as familiar with the English nomenclature as I should be.
I'm my own editor for the English version (which is something I've never been comfortable with) so it's not rare to see a slip up.
False alarm, round up the wild speculation hounds, it should have been Color of Armament.

I get the fiery eyes have sth to do with the coded message, but then he would have painted Luffy's eyes like, IDK, E. Honda's in the colorspread.
He tattooed Franky's face with a Serpent (kinda like the 1st sketch he drew for Hancock). -

Truth be told, I’m more interested in your translation than the official one. Viz does a great job, but I should ask them what their thoughts are on that in particular.
Second question. Is hearing the Voice of All Things an extension of Colors of Observation?

I have a hard time to buy Drake to be an undercover considering his encounter with Kizaru at Sabaody.

We know he's done this meta stuff before, usually with background t shirts alluding to events that are happening or will happen. The biggest clue that makes me think something is up with the red hair is the wink. He's only done that on Luffy one other time and the other character he has done it for (also one time) was Rayleigh.
-
Did Greg ever give his opinion on how awakened devil fruits work? Like how do they awaken them to begin with (I seem to be alone in thinking they fight a demon inside them like Naruto vs Kurama or Ichigo vs his hollow) or if all Paramecia devil fruits all work the same, like Katakuri's and Doflamingo's do, and if not how would luffy's work exactly?

Don't get me wrong, I also see this as sth meta by Oda. Kinemon just had the 2 birds, the moon and the snake in mind. Funny, but if you once notice the face, you have a hard time seeing the animals and the moon again. As for the wink: hm, maybe Luffy WILL get red hair, but in this spread Oda just applied a "red-filter" on Luffy (that's why the SH is pale pink and not its usual Color).

I must be the only one who still cannot see a face in the rebels note…
-
Drake going from pirate to marine and then pirate again as an under cover agent was always an idea on the table. Kizaru could have just been not privy to such information. Or better yet there could be a clear understanding of the terms should Drake go undercover. You meet the Marines and you gotta keep up the facade.
Though the most interesting thing to me came out of the Anime portion. Fist of love silliness has been one of my favorite subjects since we first learned about it. Did Luffy get bumped up like that in the manga? The implication that Katakuri's gradual admiration of Luffy began to manifest through those swellings is just about one of the coolest things to me.
-
I must be the only one who still cannot see a face in the rebels note…
Maybe this will help? My paint skills are horrible, but you should be able to get the idea still.

At this points i am curious though, also considering the fact we're in a pre-Game of Thrones finale hype (and probably Oda is living this hype too). What are Oda's favourite Game of Thrones's characters?
