New movie! Whatcha think?
-
I liked Gold alright, but it didn't really take the extra step to become a distinct and great movie. Hoping this one takes Gold's strengths and makes good on its tagline of "unprecedented scale adventure"

I hope that Rox isn't wasted on it. I want him/her/it in the main series.
Other than that I hope they try something different like with Baron Omatsuri (the only one I think is a legitimately good movie, and not just "fun because it's One Piece"). Probably won't happen though.
-
-
If it's anything like the last three movies it'll be just okay. If it's like movie 6 I'll fly to Japan for opening night.
-
I wonder if One Piece can do an Strong World again. Leave Attack on Titan and whomever else is in the top 5 of manga sales in the dust again.

For 2017 it was Attack on Titan, Kingom, My Hero Academia, Tokyo Ghoul, Haikyuu, and One Punch Man.
One Piece sole 11.5 million copies, and Titan sold 6.5. Titan actually sold WAY more a few years ago it was really close to OP, but that was largely because of the anime and people buying up backlog.
The other series sold 3.5-6 million. It'll be interesting to see where My Hero ends up in another couple years if it can keep its momentum since its by far the youngest of the bunch.
Kingdom is the most interesting one I think because you never hear about it but it's been running for 12 years and it has those numbers. Maybe because its anime already came and went?

Film Gold's opening was in Abu Dhabi, UAE.

Why there, of all places?
Was it for the gold/money theme of the movie or was there more to that? -
Why there, of all places?
Was it for the gold/money theme of the movie or was there more to that?It is just the movie's Premiere(first showing in cinemas), it was available for 1 week only if I recall correctly or was it 2?
It is like they sponsor it to advertise the city and attract tourists..etc I think them and Las vegas were competing for the Premiere and Abu won.
I was actually living in Dubai at the time, which is like 1 hour away from there.

Im interested to see what the villains will be and if they'll be tied into the ROX.
Just curious how long did you know about the movie ahead of the announcement

No comment for now. Happy to discuss that after release though!
Other than that I hope they try something different like with Baron Omatsuri
I don't think that will ever happen again. Don't get me wrong though, I'm right there with you. I want another risky movie like that! Only problem is OP is so big now it's almost impossible to do anything risky. It's got a Hollywood-esque problem for itself where it must crank out safe expensive successes.
Movie 6 is far and above my favorite film if not for story then simply by virtue of what risks it takes. I would love to see that kind of OP film again but I don't think anyone would allow it.

I think the industry underestimates too much the audience. They manufecture rigid formulas and safety rules that who knows whether or not leverage the success of a movie amidst so much marketing that pushes people into the theaters anyway… and the final result is a mediocre product that is completely forgettable by most. It' only my opinion, of course, but I don't see many people in love with them.
In fact, did any of these movies do anything to bring a new audience to the OP franchise? Not that I know... actually, IMO, they suck on the popularity of the series (that, btw, has risen into success taking much more risks than any other shonen I know) and only tries cater to the fans that want to get their fix of OP. But I may be wrong.
That's not to say that OP should make crazy avant-garde movies devoid of any sense of conventional storytelling… no, I'm not asking for radicalism. But they should aim to make something special, like the source material, like One Piece. Go beyond the tropes and make an emotional story that surprises you. This is not a crazy idea. Many big animation studios are making great films, and OP has a solid fanbase to assure the profit.

Strong World dude.
It freaking exploded it.
-

Coincidentally, OP was at Marineford at that time… which could be the right culprit. Also, I remember the marketing being huge, especially because of the Strawhats in suits being cool af in trailers and promotion stuff. The premiere itself was huge in box office, which shows that the strengh franchise was bringing people to the cinema.
-
The Strong World-Marineford-Timeskip trifecta was something else. Do not expect a One Piece boom like that ever again until the final arc of the series.
-
The thing that stops movie 6 from being the best is how out of character Nami, Usopp, Sanji and Zoro were acting. Chopper got sidelined to be the inocent one, and Robin doing Robin things (being generally competent untill she tried to end the arc early by attacking the final boss), like the plot goes to interesting places, but only because half of the crew weren't themselves.

When the movie Strong World was released, the manga had just entered the Marineford arc… the hypest moment of the series thus far.

i see, now i get your point :ninja:

Nah mate, the series played a role but it wasn't one that was solely responsible.
They made a perfect storm together.
Everything about that was massive.
Z even improved on that success as a film but did little for the series like SW did.
-
@Long:

I feel like it's either about Rox or Ace. Garp's line about Rox, seemed exactly like the set up Sengoku made about Shiki pre-MF.
I wonder if Jinbe will be part of the crew now, since this will probably take place between WCI and Wano. They gathered all of them combined for Gold, which defied the manga, so Jinbe could come back for it.
-
What was so good about movie 6? What risks did it take that today's movies can't?
-
It was just darker in tone than most one piece movies, it felt like a horror movie at times and now one piece has a marvelesque formula for movies
-
Storywise, the movie didn't really take any risks. Remove the director's name and the visual style, and you're left with a by-the-numbers original movie plot.
The risk came from going with a different art design compared to the movies that came before, as well as having a sudden tone shift partway through the movie.
Look at how different the tone is in the full trailer compared to the actual film.
-
Personally, I thought the art was janky as hell, and not fun to look at.
-
Well, its the director that would go on to do Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Summer Wars, Wolf Children, etc. so he definitely pressed his own directorial style onto the movie in a way the franchise hasn't allowed anyone else to do, really.
It was nice because it was different and a change of pace.
-
The animation is different indeed because there's a lot of fluidity that "deforms" the bodies in Mamoro's style, but the character design is pretty much the same. What realy caught my attention as different in the movie was the mood, though. Since the beginning there was always a lingering feeling that something was wrong, out of place, very uncomfortable, not only plot-wise, but the direction itself. It's kinda like the "uncanny valley" of One Piece.
-

To be honest here, that is one of the reasons why I like it so much.
Not only because we can find a justification in the mood that the villain purposely sets up to make these characters clash and cut deeper than usual, but also because it is a change of perspective I appreciate for a filler movie. It would be an issue if the film wasn't aware of the inconsistency of its universe compared to the main series, but I think it's acknowledged and that is the point. It is a reinterpretation of the series and something as basic in it as the ties between the characters. Not that it was completely unrelated though: when this movie aired the anime was close to the beginning of the Water 7 arc, which is also notorious for its heavy mood among the Straw Hats. I recall for instance a fight between Sanji and Zoro there where for the first time in the series it was clear that this was not just a running joke and they would hurt each other with no hesitation had Nami not put some sense into them that moment.
-
Greg you don't think the Rox pirates will be the main enemy in the film right???
-
I'm with the people hoping for something else like movie 6. Give a new director a chance to really bring their own style to the franchise. That said, I have liked the most recent few movies, probably putting Film Gold above the rest. I'd take more of that if it was offered.
It's too soon to really say more than that about it. Hope it gets a theatrical release in Australia like Film Gold did.
-
As long as the new movie is well executed and interesting, which I feel like the recent ones are, I'll be happy with it. Movie 6 was amazing, and I'd like to see something like it again but i'm not gonna set my expectations for something like that just so I can be let down, because having something like that is a little unrealistic. I'd rather be pleasantly surprised than let down. Either way i'm excited for this movie.
-
I have a bit of an unpopular stance on the matter, since I'm actually not the biggest fan of Movie 6. I wholeheartedly respect and appreciate what it tried to do, but it just didn't fit that well with the characters and story it was themed after for me, I feel it's a movie I would've much more enjoyed if it weren't tied to One Piece. Rather, I love movies like Strong World that feel much closer to the manga, but perhaps I'm nothing more than a hopeless fanboy in that regard. I really enjoy Movie 6, just not as a One Piece movie.
So for that, for as uninspired as that sounds, I'm hoping this one is just like SW/Z/GOLD, which is most likely going to be the case. I do hope it features a beautiful location such as Merveille or Gran Tesoro, as I felt Z felt short in locations for being themed around some rather boring islands, while the other two felt like the complete pinnacle of adventure.
-
This conversation became about movie 6 somehow, but being more creative with the plot for future movies doesn't require such a shift in mood and direction as happened in movie 6.
-
Strong World in particular underwhelmed me because of how formulaic it felt. It was One Piece paint by numbers through and through, with none of the relevant lore/character moments that make the more formulaic canon arcs work. Z was a bit better but still felt a little flat. Zetto himself and the number of important canon character cameos were what carried it.
Gold knocked it out of the park for me by taking the cast and putting them in a casino heist story, taking a plot and setting the main story would never get a reasonable shot to do and just running with that idea. Even if the style isn't as radically different as film 6, I'd like to see future movies doing more things like that instead of the usual meet villain - make friends in local area - nami gets in some way damsel'd - crew rallies - Luffy/Sanji/Zoro each get a 1v1 - roll credits.
-
I'd go like Gold > Strong World > Z
There is something about Z, a lot of its narrative decisions (younger versions of Nami and Robin, shoehorned focus in the Monster Trio fights, the role of Aokiji and Kizaru in the movie even), the character actions, the outfits, how loaded with references to the real One Pieceverse it was and how flashy -not in a particularly good or inspired way- the fights are, that rubs me the wrong way and to me it looks like an even more heavily-marketed movie than usual. It doesn't feel natural and I can't empathize with the story, the main villain and backstory, and even the Straw Hats here for that matter.
Strong World is classic One Piece that follows the formula to the core. It could very well be a continuation from the series if it didn't mean screwing up the little logic that remains in its power structure. But as said by Captain M and Nami aside to me, it just doesn't have an emotional tie to it. It feels watered-down, the worldbuilding is creative but not compelling, the character interactions are… just there, and the villains became more interesting on concept than on execution. Never got the love and praise for somebody like Shiki. His backstory in episode 0 is more engaging than his role in the movie.
Gold doesn't completely stray away from the formula but it's a lot more playful and takes narrative detours by introducing the element of the casino and thriller vibes that are not the usual in the series. The narrative never felt stagnated, and it always made sure to be one or two steps ahead. It also makes a better use of the crew both as a group and individually than most One Piece movies, the token ally character actually makes the development more interesting by always keeping some ambiguity to herself, and even the villains have more interesting powers and dynamics. It was a lot of fun, with its flaws.
-
Gold was the better one to me too. I think the intention was to make something ~cool~, and they did it. I especially like that the stakes didn't take away the swag of the film.
But… the plot was kinda boring and the fanservice (with Sabo and Lucci's inclusions) was so out of place that it really annoyed me.
-
and the fanservice (with Sabo and Lucci's inclusions) was so out of place that it really annoyed me.
Oh, that was an issue definitely. I actually kind of liked that the movie made most of these references through harmless side cameos (Wanze!), but these two just… didn't feel in tone with the movie at all.
-
Movie 6 is my favorite not because it was a great movie, but because of what it tried to do: something different.
If we're talking about great movies, Z is easily the best quality film experience.
But nothing will beat 6 in my eyes until they try something different again…which they won't because it's not safe in today's climate.
-
Not trying something like movie 6 again is a good thing in my eyes because I feel like the newer movies are more fun than movie 6. As long as fun movies keep being made, i'll be happy.
-
Something that should be addressed is how often in fillers, tv specials and some movies, the characters are out-of-character, and how they seem to be more stupid than they usually are. I liked Z a lot, and I think Gold could have been better with a more interesting flashback of the antagonist, and more funny adventures exploring the island. Like Movie 6.
-
Yeah like how in strong world luffy wanted to go back to save east blue…. I was always a lil iffy on that. Didnt sound like luffy to me.
-

You mean the save East Blue part, or that Luffy would never go back to an old location for the sake of someone else? Because he'd definitely do that. We've seen this with Zeff and Fishman Island.
Well, not that the distinction matters much, since there's plenty of people he knows back in East Blue, so wanting to save the entirety of it makes sense too.
-
What do you mean with Zeff and fishman island? I dont seem to remember any part in the story where luffy put his adventure on hold to go and do that. Luffy was willing to do it in strong world.

From Chapter 853

He did push pause to go save Ace. I suppose he could do something similar for those who raised and took care of him.

Nothing to do with fun or serious. Like I said, entirely to do with being different. Breaking the mold. Trying something new.
Those first few films aren't bad, but they're cookie cutter as anything down to the kids and old people.
-
Oh yeah I totally agree, I was just saying that I thought they were more fun and more enjoyable to watch. I'm saying I would like more movies that are more like strong world and film gold because I enjoyed them more than I enjoyed film 6.

Hey Greg, I noticed in the Vivre Card on Shank's card that it places his ascension to yonko before when he first reached Foosha (thirteen years ago), even if the actual date is simply left as "??". Does this mean that he did officially become an emperor before he met Luffy or is it simply there as a placeholder since it's still unknown when he became an emperor? If you can't answer it then no worries, was simply curious since this has been a big point of contention for years.

Thing is, the "???" was sandwiched in between 25 and 13 years.
