Just showing up to bring up Big Magma, she doesn’t have to have survived to still be around.

Or Red Poneglyph dude is the blonde guy in the cover story (with Crocus).
I mean, it's been years now and he has to be relevant to the story at some point, no?
-
There is a theory going online that Oda originally planned to have 11 strawhats (including Luffy), so he designed the Blackbeard pirates to be BB, 10 captains and Kuzan, considering Kuzan was going to bail out at the end for character reasons.
But later on, he decided to give up on adding the 11th strawhat, so he eliminated the 10th titanic captain and made that Kuzan.
So I'm wondering if that fits with what Greg has said here before, that Jinbe was the last strawhat Oda planned before serialization. In that case, for the theory above to be true, Oda would have to have decided to add the 11th SH during the manga's run, then changed his mind again at some point after the timeskip. Would that make sense?
-
Maybe only Gatz read the newspaper, unlike Smoker and Doffy

With all due respect, this can’t help but smell of people being afraid that it’s too late for Luffy to get a 10th person. lol

Haha, Doffy is a reader, in Impel Down he demands to get a newspaper.
But it's true, the way people are informed in One Piece is hilariously wonky. Like, all Strawhats know about Dragon but someone like Nami didn't know Shanks?
-
I think it would be cool if we got a movie on the Rocky Port Incident
Although I’m not sure how willing Oda would be to make a One Piece movie without the Straw Hats in it

Altough in most series we never meet characters that share the same name, theres no reason to assume Shanks is the only person named that.
Or even if he actually is, it still makes no sense that Nami would jump to that conclusion.Nami knew Luffy's hat was given to him by a guy named Shanks that was on the same crew as Buggy.
Option 1: Oh shit, this Shanks guy must be the current emperor that lives on the Grand Line.
Option 2: Oh, thats funny, there is an emperor named Shanks but since this Shanks was on the same crew as Buggy, a guy that lives on the East Blue, they cant be the same person.

By this point I think its clear that some flashback will be shown in the main series. Probably not a long one but something that show us what Coby did, how BB tool that chance to seize the throne.
But I could go for a special, like how Bardock's story in DBZ was adapted from a few panels.
-
In Vol. 45 Robin asks Nami whether Luffy actually has connections to emperor Shanks to which Nami replies "I didn't know he was so famous!" (quoted from the Viz release).
So Nami literally had no idea who he was.
-
I remember Nami's comment being more along the lines of "I didnt know he was that Shanks".
But that was a non official source, it may have been a translation choice or error.
Still can we get someone that knows the original japanese line, just to confirm?Still, I think the East Blue strawhats mostly werent even aware of the concept of Emperor. Not even Usopp knew Shanks was so famous/powerful.

This is also inaccurate, Usopp totally freaks out when Luffy tells him that his father was with Shanks (I just checked, it's a scene in chapter 25). Usopp is completely aware of who Shanks is.
Lol, sorry dude, I've just read these early volumes so many times. I don't want to come across condescendingly.
-
Yes. Usopp knows who Shanks is and is aware of his strength. For that matter, he also knows who Whitebeard is, as he recognized the name when Ace mentioned it.
Nami's comment is weird, although it's possible she knows Shanks, but not the Four Emperors concept as a whole.

Its cool, youre not coming across negatively.
I am, I also re read that chapter a few months ago and absolutely did not remember how that scene played out.
In my mind Usopp always knew that his father went to the sea with Shanks and was just amazed that Luffy met him.It does make sense for Usopp to know, he worshiped pirates, unlike Nami who despised them and only cared about her next mark in the East Blue.
Whelp, now you guys are gonna help me out with Zoro and Sanji.
Iirc, Zoro was also unaware of the Emperors when Garp showed up, caring only about Mihawk (unlike some other crew members who didn't know who he was).
What was Sanji's reaction? -
@FolhaS said in Greg: Teacher of SUPER " OP " course !:
What was Sanji's reaction?
No particular reaction. He does know Dragon and Rayleigh though and says most people have heard of them, but that's it.
-
He's totally shocked about Dragon and calls Luffy an idiot for not knowing him. Apart from that, no big reactions from him.
EDIT: I scanned through a bunch of volumes to find any reactions Zoro might have had. Turns out I couldn't remember any because there is basically none. Shanks? Wasn't even there. Dragon and Rayleigh? Literally nothing. Dude's very hard to impress. He's really awestruck when Mihawk appears but his only big reaction is when he meets Tashigi for the first time.

New article on Greg’s site is up

Since our story follows people on a line that has these power players at the end as the big obstacles it can be a bit hard to grasp a perspective on general knowledge of even such huge figures. To me, however, it makes sense that the Yonkou aren't well understood by people living outside of the Grand Line without ambitions regarding the OP. The world can be roughly cut into the four seas and the two halves of GL.
The emperor system is a political construct only relevant to one of them. The big name pirates tied to those are celebrities to pirates, but otherwise would probably break news only when involved in something big. And there's the kicker: it's a stagnant power balance that gets shaken only when Whitebeard's death creates a vacuum and his words inspire the new age. Shanks in particular seems like a chill enough biding his time enjoying piracy type that wouldn't inspire news like "yet another Supernova subjucated by Kaido!" or "family x in shambles after head of patriarch following cancelled marriage to Big Mom's kid y!"
But also retcons are retcons and it could very well be a slight inconsistency if it turns out Nami didn't know about "Red Hair" at all, instead of not putting two and two together
-
@Shiebs I just read it and it feels like Greg is playing catch up on all the stuff he hadn't gotten to over the last couple months, which is a plus to me. Crazy that I hadn't considered the visual connection between Shandians and Lunarians. It doesn't feel like much of a stretch at all and I'm interested in how Oda will finally pull off the history of the various winged people.
-
Greg do you think we’ll ever have another Davy Back Fight?
Sorry if you’ve already answered this
-
New column is up by Greg,
Conclusion of the cover story,
thoughts on the Seraphim, do they have their own will?,
Kids destruction by the Haki blast of Dory and Brogy. -
Oh man I can’t wait for next article, we’ll get to see Greg’s thoughts on the Black Beard Pirates new devil fruit powers
-
@Shiebs I would argue the stakes have become too high for something like that anymore.
....But there is that small possibility of the first real encounter of the Straw Hats and Blackbeards doing so. Luiffy wouldn't be able to refuse such a challenge, if presented.
-
@Johnny-B-Decent I’m still very intrigued to see what the BB pirates are gonna do at egg head, we know that there there but I wonder what they plan to do
And which members are there
-
I can't see Oda trying to redo an old story gimmick.
While it's true his flow of action is almost identical arc to arc (big picture-wise) he does like to have unique settings and gimmicks as the setting for the action.
Would it be fun? Yes. If there's every a canon spin-off will it happen? Probably.
But I don't think he'd use it again. Not that (stylistically) he can't. If he wanted to make it serious/deadly I think he totally could. But stakes like losing a crew member aren't gonna cut it in a battle for the fate of the world.
-
@Greg latest chapter cemented in me the idea that Buggy is the Mr. Satan of the OP world, and that by the end he will be known as the pirate king (at least from the majority of the OP world).
From 1 to 10, how much you think this is going to happen? -
@Greg Thank you again for the response Greg!
Another question, what do you think the Black Beard Pirates are going to do at Egg Head, I was all set up for an epic showdown of the Straw Hats vs an admiral and a buster call (and hopefully some of the weaker straw hats vs some vice admirals) but now the BB pirates have shown up and I have no idea how they’ll wrench into things in this epic battle or what they plan to do? What do you think they’re going to do?
Edit: Also I wonder which members are there, they seem to be split up all over the place at the moment
-
So...allow me to be the first to ask about the Holy Knights, Greg. That central figure looks rather similar to a certain pirate...
-
@Greg Allow me to be the second to ask about the Holy Knights! If you had to bet, which real life analogue do you think they'll resemble more; the Templar Knights or the Praetorian Guard? Maybe even a mix of both?
There are 9 silhouettes just like the 9 french founders of the Templar Knights, and then there's the cross symbol present in Oars clothing and in the frozen strawhat chamber that Imu visits that resembles their real life symbol (and also the twisted cross that Caribou wears and that also may be represented in the Kozuki crest), and Pangaea Castle being the Château de Chambord...
But the Praetorian Guard were the highest ranked soldiers of the Roman Empire, directly serving as bodyguards of the current Emperor at that time with almost absolute free reign to do whatever they wanted and with an almost total legal immunity. And of course there is the naming of the Elders and the Ancient Weapons as well as the 20 stone statues that symbolize the 20 founding members of the WG being obvious references to Greco-Roman culture...
So, what's your guess?
-
In before it turns out it's some pun
-
@wolfwood never doubt Oda’s ability to make a good pun
-
@Greg Apologies if this has been asked before, but why do you think CP9 got promoted to CP0 in their entirety after being more or less rebellious during their cover story? Did something happen during the timeskip?
-
BC Film RED happened and was super popular and Oda was like, "Well...guess I gotta do this now."
Not a joke but also not quite as pessimistic as it sounds. If he was truly against the idea he wouldn't have done it.
-
@Greg I see, it just feels weird continuity-wise, though. Maybe he will explain it in an SBS.
-
I would guess that he didn't want to split up the group.
-
Technically serving directly under the Celestial Dragons can be seen as a punishment
-
Lili are a relatively new characters Oda has created imho (Vivi 100% as we know), but in a databook or magazine, I forgot it, an early concept of the worldmap was revealed with Maryjoa named as "Kings residence" or something like that. So Imu in some way was "always" a part of the plan, or not?
-
Greg I want to hear all your theories on this chapter

@Robby thanks Robby!!!
-
@Greg why does Oda always break Ussops nose? Whenever Ussop gets in a serious fight his nose gets broken lol
-
So how much has Greg spoken on how Chapter 1084 may have potentially raised her relevance as a Straw Hat on the crew? I wasn't so sure how relevant she'd be as Luffy's 10th person, but seeing as how her ancestor seems to have had relevance to the Will of D., I suspect she might try living up to the legacy of that by finding out and accomplishing all she could, even if it meant helping Luffy live up to his Will of D. legacy.
-
I've just gone through some parts of Oda's conversation with Gosho Aoyama again and for some reason I completely forgot that he mentions there as well that the series will end once the One Piece is found.
With the sbs of volume 97 this was the second time that he says this.
Since this topic comes up regularly and the majority of the fandom believes it's certain that the huge war will only happen after the treasure is found, I think it might be interesting to bring this up again.
-
I thought there was going to be a gigantic war after the One Piece was found?
-
@Shiebs said in Greg: Teacher of SUPER " OP " course !:
I thought there was going to be a gigantic war after the One Piece was found?
I feel like I've been the main proponent for that interpretation (War after OP is found) not being anywhere near set in stone, in this forum at least. I'm no longer interested in laying out the reasonings and arguments, but I've done so here and on the AP discord plenty. I will say that I'm more confident in it being the truth than ever right now.
My interpretation is that we are in the beginnings of that giant war right now. The multitude of big happenings for the last dozen chapters are the types of things that will lead to the massive conflict that will dwarf Marineford and their culmination will end with Luffy finding the OP. I'm not going to argue for or against it, but that's how I currently interpret things.
-
I wonder if the Asian fanbase has already postulated the theory that Luffy came out of the Oro Jackson egg. It was dropped today. Surely not a fan, the Coro Mom theory might be worse though.

New article is out!!!

Am I the only one who hopes Kazan doesn’t betray the Black Beard Pirates? I mean I assume he will but I kind of don’t want him to
Also I always thought Franky would fight San Juan Wolf in a giant mech simply because of his name gigantic battle ship, although that might be a silly reason
-
Greg,
Since you believe that Lily was user of Ope Ope, do you think she used her 'room' to scatter all the poneglyphs around the world/Grand Line ? It would be such a easy and elegant solution... -
@auem Using "Shambles" on the Ponyglyphs in a globe-spanning "Room" sounds like a super cool idea!
-
@Nidhoeggr Wouldn't someone using Kuma's paw paw fruit be far more likely?
Kuma sent the strawhats to different places, back in Shaobondy (SP???), so i see no reason someone with his powers couldn't do the same to the poneglyphs.
