I'll add an example with the same character. Ignore the gray screentone of the old one and just focus on the lineart. Kid in chapter 700 (2013) and 1071 (2023) on a similar sized panel. I'm sure there could be better comparisons though, this is just the first one that came to my mind after checking out the latest chapter.

If I'm not wrong, chapters 1051 and 1057 have plenty of scribbly-art. Just skim through it and it's easy to understand what they mean...
-
1057 is the only time I really noticed the consistent wonky stuff (which doesn't help all the conspiracy theories surrounding that chapter's... swerves)
-
God, I couldn't even imagine drawing for 25 straight years. Oda's carpal tunnel has to be insane.
-
@Tarek what's the time stamp? I didn't remember mentioning Izo but maybe I totally slipped (^○^)
-
His coloring doesn’t look as good either, compare the drawing of the crew in there first post timeskip color spread to that of the drawing of all the first mates color spread, I don’t know if it’s just me but it doesn’t look nearly as good
Again could be me
I still love this series though
-

-
LOL!!!! Thanks! Yep, totally misspoke Issho's name!
-
Greg do you think there’s a chance at the end of the series we’ll get an Avengers Endgame scene with all the Straw Hats and there allies teaming up to fight the final threat?
-
@Shiebs the only truly unforgivable thing in Wano
-
Don’t you guys find weird that Mihawk became the greatest swordsman in roughly the same years of Oden’s piracy.. apparently without challenging him? Do you think we’ll ever get some kind of flashback about this?
-
@Shiebs
Like the Enies Lobby or Wano 'Assembled' square offs?I wonder. It's all about presentation and if he can do something new.
I mean, they'll all be squaring off, but not in the same location. I find it hard for him to resist the CP9-style approach but it also might be tough to explain all of BB's crew in one place at that kind of pivotal moment.
So...it's possible he could even colorspread it. That would be interesting for sure and he can play with it as he likes.
But will evvvvvveryone show up and 'assemble' for the cause? Yep. Just a matter of realistic placement. I think what's most realistic is a contiguous series of b/w spreads, similar to the FMI finishing-move bonanza but instead with square-offs.
(Look for this theory to be duplicated elsewhere w/o credit on a Youtube channel near you!(^○^))
-
@Greg your thoughts on this?
-
@T
The catfish shipwright? -
@Greg The little guy Shipwright design is very identical to Vegapunk
-
@T It's quite a stretch to say so. All they have in common is being partly bald and able to float.
The line across the shipwright's forehead is a tied headband/rope like this : https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-X1sZRwkYx-w/UIUJ7FO2cFI/AAAAAAAALBQ/mIsOmYjR2_k/s1600/hachimaki+japan.jpg
As for the mouth, shipwright has thick fish lips, nothing to do with Vegapunk's moustache.
-
He's a catfish. You see them in the Hacchan side-story. I don't think there's anything down that line of thought.
I'll never say anything is impossible, but I personally don't think there's any viable line of theory down that route. I'd love to be wrong!
-
@Greg do you ever think we will get Rayleigh, Scoppers, Zeff and Oden's bounties? It's weird that we know what their captains bounties are but not any of thier subordinates.
Seems like the best place to reveal it would be the vivre cards but that didnt happen.
-
I think that despite Oda having already shown us the Emperor bounties and their subbordinates he still wants to keep some surprises.
I mean, by now we already know Luffy's final bounty is going to be 5,656 billions because it's a little higher than Roger and has the 56/gomu pun.
But if we follow that logic it means Zoro's bounty will be a little bit higher than Rayleigh's and Sanji's a bit higher than Scooper's.So for now we know that Zoro and Sanji already rank pretty high but we still don't know their ceilings.
And lets not forget we actually havent seen a flashback based on the Roger Pirates, another reason to keep some surprises in the pocket. -
@FolhaS I think we already got a glimpse on how high Zoro's bounty will end up with Mihawk's. I think it was 3.5 billion, so Zoro will end up with 3.6 billion; 2 billion below Luffy's 5.6 billion. That sounds about right to me.

I imagine the more you wait to give bounties that wont change the easier it is to adjust it so it all seems consistent. I'm sure Oda wishes he would have hold off Blackbeard yonko bounty so he can start at 3.9B in a similar ballpark to his peers instead of having to reajust later when he had Kid and Law passing it by a great margin at wano's end.
-
Do you think there’s a chance Wang Zhi is the last member of the Black Beard crew or will he more likely be part of the Rocks Pirates revival
-
@desa with Blackbeard his first bounty was a reference to irl Blackbeard's bounty it's also to show that teach is still climbing the pirates ladder and progressing towards his goals just like Luffy
-
Has it been stated that the BB bounty is a ref. to that? If I recall correctly I remember looking into that and it was completely off base and likely impossible for Oda to have even tracked down not to mention incorrect.
-
Was it adjusted for inflation?
-
I see it so many times, I assume a forum or reddit member said it and most just ran with it as something Oda confirmed.
-
@Johnny-B-Decent
You mean my own research? Not only did I adjust, if I recall correctly the bounty being used as reference itself wasn't even edit: confirmed correct and (likely) impossible for Oda to have tracked down without serious work and translation. I think I even posted about it here or on Twitter but without search function here it's very hard to find.Edit: oop! Here it is!
-
Greg, have you ever considered the significance of Luffy’s straw hat having to do with the agricultural revolution and farming? I can’t help but think it ties into his obsession with food / hunger.
Simultaneously, I wonder if the fire motif ties into the myth of Prometheus and the dawn of mankind (supposedly evolving through our use of fire).
-
That would be applying foreign values.
That particular strawhat is the Japanese picturesque ideal outdoor headwear of young kids during summer vacation.
ie. Kids being free.

True; though I always found Luffy’s design in Film Gold interesting. He doesn’t don a cowboy hat — but a straw, Western-style farmer’s hat. Seemed like it could’ve been a hint?
-
@karubiDON
In GOLD he's wearing the same outfit as Hunter in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas with the hat likely changed bc of the Vegas cowboy-hat-wearing high-roller stereotype. -
Greg any new theories pop up for you after seeing Vegapunk’s intro monologue or Bonney’s distorted future ability this chapter?
EDIT: Do you think we'll get more clones of the Rocks Pirates? Greg is this what you meant by Rocks coming back into the story?
-

Edit: The more I think about it, the more I still want to go down this rabbit hole. What of Little Oars Jr’s kasa? And Otama’s job as a weaver… these are all farming hats.
I don’t disagree that the hat may have to do with elementary school children… but I don’t think that’s solely it, given the straw hat’s legacy being passed from Roger to Shanks to Luffy.
-
Oars Jr. and Tama being linked to kasa isn't a coincidence, it was just the gateway to immediately giving Luffy an emotional anchor to Wano.
/ ̄ ̄ ̄ ̄ ̄ ̄ ̄ ̄\
Luffy ---> Tama---->Ace---->Oars Jr.
As for the kasa, again, that's applying Western stereotypes as the way the kasa is presented is specifically as a shield during the various seasons. As such this calls to mind the ubiquitous children's story of the kasa-wearing ojizo-san rather than the image of a summer farmer shielded from the sun.
I'm not suggesting your line of thought can be proven wrong, but if Oda is looking to employ that nuance, it doesn't seem like those are the ways he would have gone about it since they call distinctly different themes to mind.
-
Am I the only one who has felt underwhelmed by Sentomaru’s role this arc?
I was really hoping to see him kick ass and maybe use that axe, instead he got one shotted immediately and hasn’t appeared since
Really hope that’s not the end of him
Never got to see that ultimate defense
-
@Shiebs Agreed. Unfortunately it's not even all that ultimate, since any old awakened Zoan can go through it. Big words, but they must have been the rumor in the Marine's cantina and not an absolute truth.
I shall call it the "mild defense" from now on. -
Lucci is kinda talented, though.
-
Greg, do you think there is a possibility in the future to see some past shichibukai?
-
@crlsdc
You mean in a few weeks or a few years?A few weeks, depends on what you mean by former. Does post abolishment count as former or do you mean from bf skip? Given Buckin's importance, post-skip formers are pretty much a go for launch.
-
I mean all the ones who have been substituted by the ones shown in the story. Jinbe only joined 11 years before Rufy’s departure from Foosha, if I recall correctly, so someone must have left that place 11 years ago. Same goes for the warlord who left the place that Ace refused.
There should be around 5-6 ex warlords we have never seen -
Okay, so previous unnamed warlords, in that case....hmmmm....
I think so, if they're appropriate to a flashback. iirc (I had to research this about a year ago) we don't have an exact pinpoint on how long the warlord system has been in place, only that it started post-Roger. Therefore, if there's an event post-Roger that's seminal to the story and:
- Requires a flashback.
- Requires powerful characters to make the scenario believable.
Then I think Oda wouldn't have a problem drawing them, similar to how he depicted CP-9 in the Ohara FB.
Potential events would be:
- Something involving revolutionaries, specifically Dragon.
- The obtaining and/or transport of the Nika fruit.
Since their entire narrative purpose would be to showcase the strength of an opposing force (they're destined to lose since our futuresight tells us they're no longer involved) I don't think things would bode well for them.
Of course Oda could make one that wanted to retire, had to go under WG protection, etc. etc. but their most logical purpose would be to display that the WG wanted to accomplish something via strength, but an opposing force was able to take it down.
In that sense, and with the story ripe for flashbacks, yes, I think it's entirely possible and perhaps even 'likely'.
-
Alongisde the good old Unification of the Seas post I think I have now read one of the best fanfic predictions about the One Piece ending. The person really did some effort didn't s/he.
The energy source being the treasure of Mary Joa (under the Straw Hat), Joyboy being the brother of Imu, the Space Pirates being related to the Minks, Roger and fellows laughing at an Ancient Den Den Mushi audio tape, the 4 main "gods", Figarlands' role in the story. Akainu's backstory, Fujitora defending Pluto...
Many things I can imagine ending up similar in the Manga while other things I wouldn't like at all (Tashigi a being a clone, good Lord...). But I respect the persons effort, I enjoyed it. Hillarious s/he was banned from reddit.
-
Wait, has it now been confirmed that there were Warlords before Jinbe etc.? Didn't Doflamingo say back at Marineford that when Luffy appeared with Crocodile and Jinbei all Warlords past and present are now there? I know that Crocodile became a Warlord earlier than everyone else but going by Doflamingo's statement I figured that it wasn't seven of them and the number just grew with each new member. Has that statement been retconned now?
-
iirc it's not known exaltly when the system was started, only that it was after Roger.
I also get the feeling that 'past and present warlords' meant the recent group and not literally every one ever.
Depending how soon after Roger's death, some of them woulda been crazy young.
But hey, who knows.

They were already know as the "Shichibukai" back in Jinbe's flashback, so the 7 number is consistent.
-
If Oda is ever gonna show us the ex-convicts escaped from level 6, that would be a chance to present some past warlord.
I wouldn’t mind Shanks being a past warlord, too -

I wouldn’t mind Shanks being a past warlord, tooHe's not. He already had a billion bounty back during Luffy's past and became an Emperor 6 years later. Such a detail would've been mentioned in the 957 recap.

I see. Thanks for clarifying that. So I guess Oda really managed to screw up Doflamingo's statement both ways then. God I hate Marineford.
-
Maybe it first started off as just like 3 guys and kept growing. Maybe if Ace joined, they would become the Hachibukai!
-
I don't think I buy it being more than 7. In the manga, when one goes down, they replace him, which implies that 7 is the minimum for the sake of balance.
There's no text to back it, but 7 would make sense as a maximum too, since they're giving pirate crews immunity. Do that for too many powerful pirates and they may end up with even more issues then they already have.
