That was certainly…A thing.
That was certainly…A thing.
Yeah there's no much there yet. Almost like a teaser of a teaser. But at least we have the classic Ohba/Obata "kid is bored at school" beginning.
Not another of those "loser enters a MMORPG world", please.
So, it starts with the death of the protagonist, huh. I guess I'll pick this up. I enjoyed Death Note (actually, I only saw Death Note's anime, but it pretty much followed the manga from what I get, so…), but dropped Bakuman because it became boring.

It isn't really chapter 0; it is first 8 pages of chapter 1.

Its gonna be one of those things isn't it?
Geeze….I don't know if I will keep reading this. That Harry Potter life was pretty jacked up. Well the story has some interesting elements I guess.
my this angel is even more cruel than what ryuk was..dafuq
So. Death Note crossed with Shaman King then.
Not impressed by the first chapter.
All I could think about while reading this was how suicidal people in japan will love the hell out of it…
So far I'm not impressed with this.
I guess this must be what people call 'divine justice'.
the art feels like a shoujo, the themes are bland, the violence seems unnecessary. Unlikely that i'll follow this.
There's surely no need for demons if angels are already doing the job perfectly and being selfish little dicks.
13 angels with their human partners… this feels more like a typical shonen than the other ohba+obata works. It doesn't look THAT interesting, but they are a competent duo and I think the 13 pairs can add the typical shonen appeal to it.
The translation seemed a little off, though.
I already dislike the main female character, not only because she's sexualized, but because she comes across of one of those moe waifu stereotypes who speaks like a child. It's creepy and not it a good way creepy. The chapter also didn't do a very good job with making me sympathize with the main guy.
It has a couple of interesting ideas, I guess. It's interesting that the angels are the screwed up fraction here, just like Light was actually the villain. So I'll follow it.
I'll give it a 10/10 if the devil/maybe one of the demons turns out to be the L of the series, though. lol.
After reading chapter 1, it reminds me a mixture of Zatch Bell! and Future Diary.
@Kaizou:
Future Diary.
The title who had this character?

I swear, this is like one of the premises from Bakuman they decided wouldn't work.
Might as well have just made Reversi.

Yes (16 characters)
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
the art feels like a shoujo
Is that mean you think Obata's artwork is shoujo-style?
Yeah, can't say I'm terribly impressed either. As Robby said, it feels like a mix between Death Note and Shaman king and the story just felt really manipulative.
I guess I'll give it a few more chapters to see if they do anything interesting with the premise.
The premise would be fine if the main character wasn't incredibly awful right out the gate.
And it feels like its trying to be dark just to be dark which is… meh. "Oh look, his aunt iis striking a seductive scantily clad pose and wants him!" "Now look, stabbed herself in the throat with a knife and is now bleeding like crazy!"
Just... meh. I get that its a seinin rather than a shonen (a line which Death Note straddled) but... that just doesn't impress me.
But maybe the secondaries will be better and will fast replace him.
That's exactly what bothered me. It feels like it's being dark for the sake of being dark, particularly it tries too hard to make you feel bad for the protagonist. "Look! Isn't it sad that nobody loves the protagonist?" in the most over-the-top, ridiculous way. I'm really surprised how amateurish it feels.
Just another seinen series trying really hard to come off as "dark" and "gritty". Don't think i'll be following it.

It is not seinen, it is shounen.
Yeah Imma say it feels like a mix of Konjiki no Gash!! and Future Diary as well. And not as particularly interesting a mix as that would have you believe, either.
@Kaizou:
It is not seinen, it is shounen.
Well, it's in Jump SQ, which is a magazine targeted towards older teens, right?

Yes, older teens still consider shounen. Seinen is for people from 20 to onward.

Which makes it even worst than i thought.
Yeah, aside from the art, I was pretty disappointed with this manga. The plot so far reminds me of a combination of Mirai Nikki(with angels instead of phones), Kami-sama no Itoori, and the arrow power is like Lelouch's Geass.
I will probably give it a couple more chapters to see how things develop but at the moment I'm far from impressed.
btw I'm pretty sure this release is translated from the chinese scan and not a raw so there might be errors in translation.
Ya, I probably wouldn't keep checking it out if I didn't know the authors. Maybe it'll get better though
Wow a lot a negativity in this thread. I mean yeah, I didn't care for the angel butts or the ludicrously contrived backstory, but these guys know how to make a good manga. With a premise like this I trust things will be pretty interesting.

And their other mangas had better opening chapters with more interesting/likeable protagonists and premises.

What's your point? Since this series' premises aren't good like Death Note and Bakuman, your arguing Ohba/Obata finally lost their touch.

In that their first chapter has neither an interesting premise or a likeable starting character, yeah. It was a sucky first chapter that has left a good impression on no one judging from the thread. it doesn't make us interested or want to keep reading.
The overall story might be great, but its not a good first chapter. If it wasn't an already established team, most of us wouldn't even try the second chapter.

Does "us" mean the users in Arlong Park Forums or the western (or non-Japanese) readers in general? If you are talking about general, then I disagree. When I looked in different places, there are many people who think its first chapter is good/interesting (of course, there is negative reviews as well). So, it is just matter of people's taste, not actually mean that the first chapter of Platinum End is awful.

Here is the only place that matters.
Other places you find people that think Naruto and Bleach are good.
You don't really have to preface every statement with "in my opinion". Also, I can at least buy people seeing Naruto and Bleach being good in some way or at some point. On the other hand FT is still going strong.
Oh yeah this first chapter. Crawling In My Skin: The Manga
@Kaizou:

Premises don't carry a series. Characters do and so far characters are pretty damn uninteresting and unlikeable. It could change but the first chapter didn't make that good of a impression for me to read and follow the series.
Other places you find people that think Naruto and Bleach are good.
Isn't people here think same thing? Heck, people in here only talk about (I won't include OP since that's the main thing for this forum) Bleach, Naruto, and FT (the masters of generic/cliche shounen series).
Have you actually read those threads? They mostly talk about those things to insult them.
Naruto didn't get 15 threads deep due to all the praise heaped upon it.
Loved the first chapter. Really interested to see the next one.
Not sure yet if I will subscribe to the Viz translation for this manga (I will have to check first if the region restriction is as easy to bypass as with ESJ).
I dont really know what to make out of the first chapter.
The main character's shitty life was pushing it too much, you cant make someone interesting out of a guy like that. Then again maybe there lies the catch, now that he is going to be thrown into a game of doing whatever he pleases and having his "happy time" it could be interesting to see how he develops.
Then again the juvenile competition with the other angels (who would chose a bunch of freaks and some cute girls, as usual) doesnt make me have good expectations.
Well, this was pretty unimpressive.
The MC´s reactions seemed forced like hell. I guess I can read the second and third chapters just to see how it will develop from dead aunt to something else, but I doubt I´ll follow this.
The pace of the chapter is so weird. The introduction of the angel felt so forced and out of the blue, that it seems the authors don´t really care about the protagonist per se and really just want to get the plot of the "13 angels looking for a god" going. Let´s hope for the secondaries to be awesome and for the main to get out of "emo" mode fast. or this can become really cheesy.
look more like Law of ueki (who came before Mirai nikki) than Mirai nikki since the MC got some supernaturel power from the angel. I actually have a bad feeling about the angel because of this:
"she" look a bit like like his mother btw
I can't wait to see the next chapter and the anime in probably 2/3 years
After reading it, it felt like a mix of Future Diary and Death Note. I'll see how it goes, but it doesn't grab me like Death Note and Bakuman did.
