I'm getting those ads that, when you scroll through a webpage, double underline key words and make them an annoying ad link. I've tried spy bot several times, and manually uninstalling programs that did not belong. No luck.

Short of a system restore, any ideas how I can fix this?

So far, it's been mostly on AP and Livejournal, haven't done a lot more.

And I only have one browser, IE. Before you give me the tenth degree about that, I advise you to talk to Zio. He can put it so much better then I can. It's honestly never given me any problems for the last gazillion years I've been using it. Weird how this randomly started to happen…

Edit - Yeah...it was on animemusicvideos.org as well

I recommend Mozilla Firefox, no ads at all when I'm using it.

              Yo.

Yes I highly recommend Mozilla Firefox as well, I have no problems with it and there's no ads. But its strange that your spybot doesn't work. Is your's Search and Destroy.

IE has been getting really bad lately with ads, something else is going on, I read about it somewhere. Sometimes I still get ads from it when I don't even have it opened.

                  Yo.

i had this spyware once and i did format but that wasn't the main reason. you could at least try ad-aware it sometimes finds spywares that spybot doesn't and the opposite works too.

EDIT: i think/hope the new ie will correct all these ad problems.

Hey Seta don't feel too bad. I'm still an IE user as well (firefox just turns me off 👅 )

I had a really bad case of spyware and spybot just doesn't do jack sometimes. I would recomend Ad-aware SE or trendmicro (google search). And if that doesn't work then try the 15 day trial for this program called "super ad blocker". You can just un-install it after the 15 days (and dont' worry it doesn't pop up like every time you log on or anything).

You can also get "Ad-Blocker" from Mozilla Firefox's site if you use Mozilla Firefox. It works great! 😃 blocks almost every pop-up and blocks all banners and makes my site ad-free

Thank you everyone! Ad aware SE did the trick - and I didn't need to go through all the trouble of getting an entirely new browser either! I use google's pop up blocker which works really well, but these were just weird links…they seem to be gone now. Thank god!

                          Thank you again!

LOL NO FIRE FOX! I'm happy with my virus filled internet explorer with my 5 toolbars that allow me to find sexy singles in my area, and there is nothing wrong with getting a pop up about how the weather is going to be like… I'd say thats helpful! And the sound of a free lobster dinner sounds pretty good right about now! XD

I personally choose to use internet explorer, the google toolbar/msn toolbar is pretty handy and its all I need.

I HATE Firefox. I installed it three times on three seperate occasions and I uninstalled it each time. I can't get adjusted to the way it is set up and it stopped working one time. The first two times I installed it, it wouldn't transfer my bookmarks like it claims to do, the plugins were lame and the difference in loading a page on IE and Firefox wasn't that big of a difference on my connection.

So it can autoblock spyware and pop up ads. Ever thought that some pop ups are needed, for downloads and private message notices (Back in the old forums)? And what kind of sites are you going to that gives you a massive surge of pop up ads and/or spyware that you need to install a brand new browser? I'll stick with IE and a good program that can get rid of spyware like Ad-Aware SE.

I'm also tired of hearing solutions to computer related problems involving me to get something. If I have a problem with my PC, I'm told to get a Mac or install Linux on my computer. If I got a problem relating to the internet, I'm always told to get Firefox and sometimes treated like I am an idiot for using IE. If I can't burn a CD using iTunes or another media player, I'm told to get with the times and get an iPod.

Telling people to get certain programs/hardware/accessories may be great now, but think about this: If everyone starts to use a Mac or Firefox, then all of the jackasses who spend time making spyware, viruses and other annoyances will start targetting Firefox and Macs.

Sometimes, a dead woman is a dead woman. Sometimes a giant black gorilla is just a giant black gorilla.

Stop reading into every little thing.

IE works great for me. It is fast. It is convenient. It is fine. The Ad Aware took care of the problem a lot faster and a lot more conviently then changing completely to a different browser. I have no reason to change.

I've had the same problems you had when switching over to Firefox and I got used to it eventually. Well, I will definitely recommend alternate browsers to IE. You're forgetting Opera, another great browser. www.opera.com You should try that out too. I'm a living example of someone who had all his bookmarks transferred over and are still working fine (that is before I got a new PC).

And anyway, in the future, web developers will most likely be coding sites to tailor to web standards and unless Microsoft fix their way outdated rendering engines, you might find sites that break in IE.

I am pretty excited about IE7 and all but it's too far away and I prefer Firefox when coding pages - it's easier to work with standards than to come up with workarounds to tailor to IE.

Yeah, you took care of it already, but that's definately spyware. I actually prefer Spybot Search and Destroy over Adaware SE.

I don't care too much about whether I use IE or Mozilla, they're both very much the same to me. Firefox is starting to get just as bad about spyware as IE. But there are some troubles that I have with IE that Mozilla doesn't have. I HAVE to use IE at the moment, though.

Spybot is good, but sometimes it just doesn't get rid of it. So thats why I run Ad-aware after it.

The only thing I don't like about IE is it doesn't have tabbed browsing (and true most virus creators targets IE for its share is still #1). I heard IE7 will come with tabbed browsing, so I'm looking forward to it.

ooshi, on my PC, FF loads much slower than IE. I don't care on most of my machines because machine speed is fast enough, but I have one outdated PC for administration use (I only check email and have messneger on that) and lemme count how long it'll take to initially launch:
                                                    FireFox: 10 seconds.
                                                    IE: 3 seconds.
Both are most updated versions. I think FF has memory leak problem, too. Or at least it used to leak x.x

I didn't have any problem importing info to FF though… Except they didn't work really well with Japanese Bookmark bar entries 😛 I imported info on 3 machines and all were okay.

the firefox on my powerbook is UBER slow and it heats the book up too. so i stick with safari. on my PC firefox crashes all the time, and i hated IE, so i use crazy browser.

you guys know what this all comes down to? THERE IS NO ULTIMATE BROWSER. and to developers: YOU CANNOT CREATE THE ULTIMATE BROWSER. you simply try different ones and pick one that works best for you and your computer. this makes sense because it is a well-known fact that each computer has a mind of its own.

I find since I went to 1.0.7, Firefox crashes way more than 1.0.6 ever did.

Opera 8.5 has enough compatibility weirdnesses and times where you click a request and it just never completes (always when you don't want to click to resubmit it, lest you end up with two orders or posts or…).

                                                            Why is it so hard?

We tried re-installing it, but it didn't help. You would see the program running under task manager, but no window would pop up…except maybe a popup an hour later or something.:glare:
I also tried the latest Netscape browser, which is similar to Firefox. It crashes a lot, though.
