Chapter 797: Rebecca

@uniaka:
Back with the "Pushhh pushh the birdcage moment" everyone was like" they need to grow as characters, it's needed". Well, the citizens of Dressrosa sure grew in some fine f***** characters that hate the man that saved them from Doflamingo, that put a end to the last 10 years. It sure was needed to waste all the chapters with them so they can grow worse then before.
Time to move to next island.
See the parallels to the doffy night dude, one day a pirate comes when their ruler is revealed a tyrant, the pirate saves them and then they don't realize that things were terrible for years. Dressrosans are terribly flicky but Luffy is kidnapping the princess, how would skypeans react if he suddenly took ganfal after saving them? Or vivi? They don't have the privileged perspective that we do, and also they were dupped for ten years.
Misstrust is healthy at this point, for most of them, they only had GATS and the king comments to trust luffy.

Man, this chapter was uncategorically shit.
Explain why it is "uncategorically shit", i don't understand the reasoning behind this statement, you didn't provive any evidence whatsoever to back up it :wassat:

It's not in the rules. Chapter was shit, case closed.

sometimes you just gotta write what you feel and peace out.
Nope.
Look this is the bottom line.
If you keep dropping in posts that don't add anything to the discussion or the forum in general, and just annoy people, then you'll end up banned.

Man, this chapter was uncategorically shit.
Lol enough of that.

It's not in the rules. Chapter was shit, case closed.
It's should be in the rule, people can't just say shit about something without any basis. The chapter was very good intense, the emotion Oda delivered through this chapter is top notch, i almost cried when Rebecca say "let's live together", such an amazing ending for 2 of the most liked characters in this arc.

awww, it's so cute, what a good boy, he learned his lesson by heart. And a Doffy avatar on top of that!

Even from their point of view, with the information only they know, you tell me the first thing you would do, in their shoes, is to attack and think bad of the guy who seconds ago you saw as a hero, man that saved you from 10 years of lies and slavery for the loved ones turned into toys, the man that used a birdcage to kill everyone, you have seconds away from certain death and Dressrosa erased from existence?
Maybe it's just a rumor, maybe Luffy just wants to take a walk with Rebecca, but no, he's just another pirate that does bad things, even if you had proof before your eyes that he's beyond your evil average pirate.

look, you are obviously a kid (nothing wrong with being a kid), but you shouldn't try so hard licking the boots of the moderators, especially when wearing a Doffy avatar!

Alright then brah. Whenever there is a shit chapter next I'll call it out for what it is and just that one time I'll provide actual reasoning for why. I invite you - no I urge you - to engage in a debate with me because you've annoyed me enough that I will actually enjoy destroying you in a debate. I don't flame when I seriously get into discussions but it will get heated and I am already imagining you getting your panties in a bunch.
Until then.

Contributing to a forum with sensible posts is "licking the boots of the moderators" ? Yeah right.

because you've annoyed me enough that I will actually enjoy destroying you in a debate.
Let's just focus on you posting something with actual content first, m'kay?
Later.

They are fickle, and are witnessing a scene under circumstances very similar to that one. Something as traumatic as last week coup gets jumbled and obscured, the important thing to them is that a pirate attacked the princess and that pirate might or might not be their savior, that they don't know why he did it
-

That is literally what I just said. I will first post some actual content. Reasoning.
…
Come on now I plan to have a long marathon argument with you. But it will really ruin the fun if you have to repeat everything I say.

Yes, that's what I was referencing.
You said you'd destroy me in a debate, I'm just hoping for the lesser of your claims to come true.
It's pretty funny how riled up you're getting after being scolded for bad posting lol.
Anyway, I look forward to this gargantuan future discussion, see ya.

Those people are just mad because there was no fighting in this chapter.
-
Scolded my ass, you are threatening to ban which is bull. I figure if I teach you a thing or two about real discussion and about proper storytelling you'll get off my case for the future.
Also, I get competitive.
And it won't be funny soon brah when I'm gagging you with logic. Ok I should really peace out now this is off topic.
-
Those people are just mad because there was no fighting in this chapter.
Marines chasing and shooting at Luffy was enough fighting for me, Fujitora riding the rock at the end was dope. They complain just for the pure sake of complaining.
-
Scolded my ass, you are threatening to ban which is bull.
I'm not threatening to ban you for this.
I'm saying if you keep doing this thing that I've pulled you up for, and reasonably asked for you to stop doing since it adds nothing to the thread or forum, then you will end up banned for it.
That's a perfectly reasonable consequence that may happen down the line.
Now seriously, we have nothing more to say about this.
-
If you've been bored of the series for at least four years, or you find everything to be "shit", perhaps its time you stopped reading it.
It'd be really great if you went and echoed this in the Bleach and Fairy Tail threads to encourage some actual discussion because it means nothing when it comes from me.
Damn, I just realized Usopp hasn't said farewell to the damn dwarves yet. I guess we know what next weeks chapter is gonna be about.
-
Damn i am still so sad and kinda angry about this Chapter. Generally it was proper writting for a proper conclusion BUT don't give me this after two weeks of waiting and after showing us MAJOR world building chapters right before. Gorosei, Akainu, Bonnei, Drake, KHA, Kaido, Sanji and Co, Sabo's Amnesia and glimpses of Dragon to come off after a break showing us… Rebecca. You could do that in fewer pages. I can understand he wanted an emotional moment but she's been crying for two years, seeing her cry as she decides to go live with her old man is just not anything special right now. One Piece had its emotional moments in the first part of the Grand Line and Marineford, right now the only way oda can produce actual emotion is with strong flashbacks like Doflamingo's or Law's or with Battles. We are in the toughest sea, Luffy is actually staring at his goal now and his major enemies are right ahead of him. We have no other time for cry babies. Yes, help them in the way and make them somewhat usefull (unlike shit-tier character Rebecca) and deliver the suspense and emotion via Fights. Heck seeing Vivi supporting Luffy in the Reverie against everyone in 1 page would be way more emotional right now. Luffy is already a close-to-top tier Pirate, there are unlimited ways to deliver emotion to us...
Hopefully this is just oda toying with numbers to give us something good on chapter 800.

Contrary to popular belief around these parts, this chapter didn't even need to happen. Oda manufactured this entire 'issue' of Rebecca and Kyros not being able to live together for bullshit reasons just in the last chapte alone. Dressrosa adores Kyros and wouldn't have had any problems with him being her father.

Seems that it's always been more Kyros than the citizens. He uses the excuse of the citizens, but he could never let go of his past, and in effect allow Rebecca to be a part of his life because of it. He refused to touch Rebecca with his actual hands because of that in the flashback, using mittens if he ever held her. It's the whole reason he didn't want Rebecca to fight, as he see's himself being reprehensible for being a fighter and what he has done. In this chapter he talks about being a bad person, but Rebecca said she doesn't care what he did, he's her father and her dream has been to live together. Citizens would probably be accepting, but I don't think that is the main issue here with Kyros.
Add on
Also, I just finished looking up the title chapters, and I wonder where people get the idea of big reveals after every 100 chapters. Looking at the titles for each milestone, I don't see anything to indicate that this is common. If anything, none of the chapters have any significant reveal.
Chapter 100: Dragon was already revealed and just helped Luffy. Nothing big here except maybe people wonder why he would help.
Chapter 200: Luffy in the middle of Crocodile fight
Chapter 300: End of Skypeia stuff
Chapter 400: Near end of Robin Flashback
Chapter 500: Saobody stuff, maybe first show of Rayleigh
Chapter 600: Crew is back on island and back together. Major since they've been separated for a while, but nothing ground breaking
Chapter 700: Doflamingo is talking to Luffy and Law. Main thing would be reveal of Doflamingo having the fruit Ace had. I don't consider that a major reveal. In the end, there really isn't anything to show that chapter 800 will be something major. If anything, the showing of Kaido would be a major event we would expect to see for chapter 800 if anything.

Whatever the case may be the chapter still felt super contrived. They couldn't have had this heart-to-heart "Waaaaah tou-san!" "Uwaaah Rebecca!" crap over at Scarlett's grave after beating Diamante or something? Two or three pages and that could have been it, but Oda for whatever reason had to figure out a way to make Luffy the facilitator of the reunion because he wants to stretch Dressrosa to 800. Meh.

I just added on to the last quote if you want to look at it. Until it happens, we can't really assume Oda is waiting for Chapter 800, as the past shows us he doesn't do major stuff in those chapters. Oda could've done something then, but the fact that Scarlett was avenged was the main point there, and with Doflamingo not out of the picture, it wasn't quite time for them to celebrate being together. Diamante going down and Doflamingo going down were two different things, and with all the chaos it wasn't time for a chit chat.

There's a lot of stuff that could have happened but Oda did differently that we could nitpick in these 797 chapters of One Piece exactly how you're doing now.
It's not bad writing that it didn't happen then, honestly it makes more sense imo to do it after everything's been settled but that's just me.
Kyros's conflict and Rebecca wanting to live with him bad been set up and that's enough to have it here as an emotional cap for the arc. -

ANyone saying "Oda is padding this to hit chapter 800" hasn't paid much attention. Outside of cutting material to make Chapter 100 the launch off point into the Grand Line, he's never made a terribly big deal about the events around 100.
Chapter 200 wasn't the finale to Alabasta, it was the second of three fights with Crocodile.
Chapter 300 was neither the defeat of Enel or the departure from Skypeia, it was just the party int he middle of the finale.
Chapter 400 was the strawhats spitting up to fight CP9… it doesn't even have it iconic "all the strawhats decalring war" or the "I wanna live!" scenes, and was dozens of chapters away from the finale.
Chapter 500... had Rayleigh on the last page, I guess.
Chapter 600 was not the launch of the time skip or the full reunion set off. Chapter 598, 601 and 602 were those chapters.
700 was... Doflamingo announcing he left the warlords?Yes, you can cherry pick and force significance into all the 100 multiples, but by same random association you can pick every single chapter that ends in 25 or 73 and make a case for it. Those aren't even consistently color spread pages or anything.
If anything, the cutaway chapter we just had with Kaidou would have been an ideal "Big event anniversary chapter" and it was wholly unconnected to the current situation and could literally have been done at any time.
Oda cares far less about the chapter number than he does which chapter will end a volume, he noticeably speeds and slows things for that all the time. He is NOT "padding" the story just to hit chapter 800. (Chapter 804 or 805 is much more likely to be a solid cliffhanger/jump off point, since thats where volume 80 should end)
-

Again, that's not me. I don't care whether or not 800 is something lame like saying goodbye to the dwarves or if it's some epic Will of D reveal or Yonkou clash. Either way it still feels like Oda is dragging ass on Dressrosa so we can embark on 800. Believe me, I hope I'm wrong and we leave next week. I truly do, but that probably won't be the case.
-
I think this would be a good time to see how good bartolomeo's barriers are, and if you can break the barriers with CoA. we have 3 top marines here, likely with great CoA.
-
Even if they do embark from Dressrosa on Chapter 800, that does not mean Oda slowed down just so it would happen on that chapter. Unless there is ample evidence to support it via precedence or Oda himself comes out and says he wanted chapter 800 to be the end of the arc.
As for this last chapter setting everything up, you'd have to forget about learning this information way early on in the arc. We have Rebecca who was in the coliseum trying to get the Mera Mera. She specifically stated she wanted it to take down Doflamingo, and the reason for that was so she could live with Soldier-san. We get exposition from Kyros as a toy that they couldn't live together because of the Laws placed by Doflamingo. Toys could not live with people and only by Doflamingo being taken down could Rebecca get her wish. Learning that Soldier-san was her father was a bonus, but as we saw in this chapter, she specifically called her Soldier-san and that she just wanted to be with him, which was stated many chapters ago.
If you feel that it was a bad chapter because you don't like the characters, fine. Thinking it could've taken up less time is also okay. Stating it came out of no where is a whole different matter, which is wrong as we learned of this early on in the arc.
-
^Chapter 700 was the start of the arc. If chapter 800 is the end it is not coincidence.
It means Oda wanted a 100 chapter arc on the dot.
-

It could be, but it might not be. I don't have any reason to believe Oda, or any Mangaka at that, purposely do certain things just to get a chapter number out for the sake of it. Oda might've decided to do it, but in the end we can't say unless A) It actually happens and B) there is evidence to back it up by interview or precedence. If Oda did chapter number things for the end of every arc, then we could say this isn't a coincidence. One time it happens does not mean he did it on purpose.
-
It could be a coincidence that he starts an arc at 700.
It could be a coincidence that he ends an arc at 800.
Both at the same time?
Possible but very unlikely a coincidence.

Daddy Masterson cries in a corner
Oh, didn't Oda pad some chapters to have Gear 4 coinciding with Gear 2 chapter number? I think so. If Oda allow himself to cut some part of the story to hit a particular number, he can stretch out his story as well.

I do remember there being talk at the time at some kind of coincidence, but I thought it was about Gear 4 and nightmare Luffy. Nothing else I can really add to the discussion but my point stands. Unless there is enough evidence, I don't feel that Oda is padding things out for the sake of chapter numbers.

Chapter 701 - Adventure in the Country of Love, Passion, and ToysDidn't 701 formally begin things?

If 701 is the start of Dressrosa and 801 is the start of the next arc that means Dressrosa is exactly 100 chapters long and - only if Dresrossa officially ends on 800 - what Oda is probably going for.
-
Well 700 isn't really about Punk Hazard either. But we do see Dressrosa and all the top executives in it.

In some ways I can give you this, but let me explain something before that. Over the years it has been shown that Oda has changed on many things. Mainly that the supposed halfway point has changed a number of times, and initial plans have changed. Therefore, Oda deciding he wanted to do a 100 chapter arc which started on a 100 number and ended on another 100 number is suspect, as things have always changed. I doubt that Oda even near the end decided that he wanted the arc to be 100 chapters long just because of that reason alone. Perhaps there is a slight chance he decided to stretch some parts here in the end to get to chapter 800, even then that's suspect. The same could be said for the gear chapters, perhaps it would be revealed sooner, but new ideas came extending the arc longer. He saw a chapter coming that coincided somewhat with the gear 2 reveal and maybe decided to stretch things out. However, this one time does not make enough proof for me.
That's all I got, since I can tell neither of us will change our stances. Nice little chat though.
-
How so, guys? Didn't you know Oda is a skilled cabbalist?
-

No it wasn't. 701 is when they hit the island. If you want to claim 700 because of the Dofla quitting the warlords setup, then that was chapter 699 that was annunced… and case can be argued for quite a ways back once it became clear Dofla was a part of Punk Hazard... and considering Baby 5 and Buffallo were both in that arc but carried over to the next...
Oda isn't pacing it this way just to have a 100 chapter arc. ANd really, if you're going to do that you need to exclude the Kaidou chapter we got the other week since that had nothing to do with anything.
-

Anything that happens in between when the Strawhats land on an island and when they leave an island is a part of that story arc.
-
In which case, we're going to eventually see what the other strawhats were up to and finding out the information on that is going to stretch way longer, making htis much longer than 100 chapters. Because either what the other strawhats are doing either counts, or it doesn't. You can't just count one chapter of however long their adventure (which is off island!) is and not the rest.
If you're going to be that arbitrary, anything can be stretched to a whim to fit.
Heck, by that loose definition, Amazon Lilly, Impel Down, the War, and the timeskip are all part of the Saobondy arc.
-

To be fair, 700 is the one where they reach Dressrosa's waters, so you could argue they arrived there in that chapter.
Heck, Luffy even says: "We're here! Dressrosa!"
-
Because Oda always does big reveals every 100 chapters, right?
I never said he did. In this case, I absolutely believe he is. The Dressrosa arc officially started at 700 (where they arrived at the end of the chapter) and I'm convinced Oda's been padding a lot of stuff in this entire arc just to get to 800 (look at the chapters with all of the running/pushing, that old grandma with the broken leg, etc. I could give a lot more examples, but I don't have the time). Bottom line is this arc is about 20 chapters longer than it probably should've been. One Piece has not been the same since the timeskip, which is probably why it's been dropping in popularity (at least in terms of merchandise sales) over the last few years. Oda really needs to focus on what's important and cut down on the filler (like the hundreds of wasted panels in this arc with just random pirate/citizen/marine fodder commenting on obvious crap) and get back to the Sabaody/Impel Down/War style of moving relatively fast while also including really interesting characters/stakes.
