I do want to add that while the movie itself was alright, I still think it made for a great theatrical experience and I'm glad Funimation pushed for a limited release!
One Piece Film Gold (July 2016)

Huh? I mean i wouldn't say that Tesoro had depth like Z, but he sure as hell had more personality then whatever Shiki showed.
Nah Shiki had a better design and was a total goofball with his two lackeys. He had an actual relationship with members of the crew too instead of just treating them like a dozen famous pirate crews before them.
-
Looks like Vic got his One Piece role.
It was only time! I thought he fit very nicely with Sabo. We can now all get it in our heads that it's Sabo singing the first round of We Are! in S1. Trippy? Maybe.
Overall, it was great to see this get a theatrical release. Our theater was probably around 60% full for the showing. I'm hoping that it will give a little more incentive for there to be more big screen projects in the future. Loved the soundtrack and cameos.. had to explain a couple of things to my 12-yo (like why the theater was losing their shit about the Celestials and the Tesoro's tattoo.), but otherwise, she loved it.

I found it odd that Gold, a caper movie, lacked a sense of joy in the adventure that felt present in most of the recent OP movies, even one as sober as Z. The most fun scene was the costume shopping/wardrobe fashion show and it lasted all of thirty seconds. Like Strong World, the time spent on trying to create a sense of emotional depth might have been better spent elsewhere.

Episode 0 contained some of that, I don't recall much of what you describe in Film Z. It's more than likely because the story in contained on one island/ship/city, unlike Strong World or Z which has a lot of traversing.
-
The OP Podcast website lists two characters named Nypers and Balong in the credits - does anyone know who those two are?

Just got back from seeing One Piece Film Gold, aka Ocean's 11: One Piece Edition. I really liked it, actually.
! There was some iffy stuff, like Tesoro's crammed in backstory and some stretched logic with the fan and the seawater pump, but overall it was a fun adventure. Loved all the cameos and the return of Spandam and Lucci.
! I'll have to rewatch Strong World and Z (and eventually Gold again) to see how they stack up against each other. -
Saw the Dub in Theatres (never thought I'd ever say that.)
I really didn't care for Tesoro, until we got his flashback montage. But definitely, felt like a downgrade from Z and Shiki.
Wasn't bad though, still enjoyed it and got waaaay too much attention wearing my WB hat.

Very disappointing, especially since Oda wrote the movie IIRC.
A few funny moments, but the rest…eh.

He was the Executive Producer. He didn't write the script.
He only wrote Strong World.

Well, at least something. Though he still ok'd it.
But anyway, films are to be taken more lightly anyway.

Worldwide Gross as of Wednesday January, 11th 2017**: $65,974,339**
The movie likely won't outgross One Piece Film: Z which finished with $7****4,223,861 worldwide but it has outgrossed One Piece Film: Strong World which finished with $49,275,348 worldwide and Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection 'F' which finished with $64,092,411 worldwide as well as Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods which finished with **$**50,974,742 worldwide. The film has yet to close in the US and Canada and it's Thursday and Friday grosses in those territories haven't been reported yet so this isn't the final worldwide gross and I will post again in this thread when it's final worldwide gross is reported -
If I see one more god damn One Piece film that decides to make it about Nami or have something related to Nami when there are 8 other characters you can do, I'm gonna shit.
I'm just gonna fucking shit.

I don't understand what the uproar is, Nami has only had some underlying plots in Strong World and now this.
Still better than Chopper's story in Film 3 or Zoro's in Film 5, both of those films were pretty bad.
-
In the last 3 films that (let's face it, are the only real official films people seem to care about) two of them have had something related to Nami, or had them rescuing Nami. I'm tired of it. I don't give a FUCK.

In Film Z, it was just a sub-plot that involved her being turned into a child alongside Chopper. In fact, Chopper had movies more about him than Nami herself.

He's not talking about Film Z, he's talking about Gold and Strong World

First off, it's literally two movies that have a six year gap between them, and second, haven't most of the films given something for each Straw Hat? I know that not all of them have been handled equally, like say Brook and Franky, but this is overreacting a bit don't you think? Especially since Nami's spotlight role in this film tantamounted to…her interaction with Carina around 1/3 of the way through, her doing nothing that stood out in her team's mission, her not even fighting in the final battle when literally every other Straw Hat faced a bad guy, and finally her story with Carina coming full circle at the end. That's hardly overexposure at all.
Plus what little of the film was about Nami focused on her former career as a thief and her love of money...a fun trait of hers that isn't seen too much in the story anymore.

Oh yeah, that was a bit annoying too. Can't they not insert something in the SHs past? I mean they didn't do it much with the movies before Strong World IIRC?
-
Why does everyone hate on Nami so much? She only had slightly more exposure with this film and Strong World in the underlying plot. Please look at movie 5 again and say you enjoyed that more.
-
Didn't you guys got it? Halfmetal-lich doesn't give a fuck so obviously everyone must also be annoyed.

By God, how dare these two films out of the 13 films related to this franchise have a subplot related to the same main character?
It's happened twice already! TWICE! That's more than one!
Why couldn't it have been Hancock instead? -

Two of the previous movies were mainly about Chopper. One of the previous movies focused on Zoro.
Only one of the movies has had a real focus on Nami, and that was Strong World. Nami and Carina's relationship in Film Gold is important, but it is nothing but a subplot in the film.
-
Sorry to be super noob, but I get urges to watch these movies sometimes, now being one of them. And I was wondering if there's an English sub somewhere. An official one, even? I have no idea what I'm talking about, I'd just like some kind of answer to this: When will be the best time/ETA that a majority of English speakers (not just a handful of early viewers) get to see this movie, officially or unofficially?

But if you or others liked then, that's wonderful! Don't let anyone else tell you otherwise, I just found it redundant and dull.
Still was a pretty looking movie though.

Just wondering, does anyone know why the UK was shafted so hard with a cinema release? With the recent trend of Shounen films getting cinema releases, I was really looking forward to seeing One Piece on a big screen…

Could have something to do with DVD sale numbers.

Watched it today. Had a couple of nice moments, but it's essentially an over produced money grabber. I know the bad quality of OP anime should hardly surprise me at this point in time, but still expected they'd make more of an effort.
The only thing that really impressed me was Tesoro's flashback bits. That was masterfully made. Too bad it was wasted on such an empty character.
-
Got to watch it some days ago.
The first half was pure joy. Just watching the strawhats explore this amazing new ship and having fun was lovely, and the visuals did a great job of bringing you into the action and showcasing the ship. I never liked the movies that involve the whole world like it's in danger so this movie was right up my alley. For the most part it was a stand-alone adventure.
The second half was a disappointment. The infiltration plan wasn't that interesting and felt like it went back and froth a bit (how many outfits did the Strawhats have?!). And I'd rather have Carina actually betray the Strawhats instead of betraying Tesoro, it would've been more interesting and given some credibility to her conflict with Nami, which felt very forced. "Oh I knew you were good all along but I'll pretend I'm angry at you until the very end" good grief. The fights were all over the place and I got no satisfaction from the conclusion. The worst thing was involving the revolutionaries and CP0. What was even the point aside from generating extra audience? That screen time should've gone to fleshing out Tesoro.
So yeah. It's been a while since I watching Strong World and Z, but it feels like this is the movie I enjoyed the most so there's that.
-
So finally watched the movie… Was worse than Z but as good as Shiki.
What I do not like is the Sabo and Lucci scene. I can't believe Lucci powered that much up to be a serious opponent to Sabo... But that's just me.
While I do understand that they brought up reasons for both being there, the whole scene felt for me like fanfic and was mostly offscreen as well. -

What's really odd is that they announced screenings for England way back in July, and now eight months later we haven't even been told who's licensed it (almost certainly Manga Entertainment, but still). Looks like another 'DBZ: Battle Of Gods' situation where there's a single festival screening after the US blu-ray has come out. At least thanks to the magic of region-free BD players I can watch the film in June.

They probably won't even show it dubbed when it does screen in England lol.

Got today spanish version of One Piece Film Gold Collector's Edition
!
-
My german version should come tomorrow
-
Anyone know if the Spanish/german etc have English subs on them too? It doesn't look like the UK is going to get this one anytime soon and the American one is of course region locked to stop us getting this one legally.

Speaking as someone who has connections to both. Neither Manga UK and Anime Limited have it. We THINK Universal have it as they now have most of Funi's stuff which is not a good sign if you want to see it reasonably priced (see their treatment of My Hero Academia's release) but I honestly think this is one where we just wont see it at all or at least for a few years. If I find anything else out I'll keep updated but it's incredibly difficult as everyone is just pointing the blame at each other (Anime Limited say Manga UK, Manga UK are saying it's not with them and ask Toei, Toei say Funi, Funi don't know about UK)

Finally got to this!
I really liked that it had a consistent theme as a basis. That is my problem with most of OP's movies. Most didn't really have any theme or a confident narrative to them. They were just another bland filler adventure.
This is why I like movie 6, 10, 11 and now 12 the most. They feel like complete stories with a clear narrative to tell and not get lost on the way to the end.
Some took a theme and ran with it. 6 was friendship and loss, 11 was justice and 12 was freedom. 10 just had a very clear narrative structure, even if it just revisited Nami's AP arc about trust.
But going back to the movie, to get the surface stuff out of the way, it looked and sounded really good. I think this is my favorite OP movie soundtrack for the jazz influence. The character animation is especially good at points. Not as good as 6, still, but really good.
It was just a very stylish movie, with a great setting full of character. The Straw Hats were a blast to follow. Nami and Carina were the highlight for me. Love their relationship and contributions to save everyone. Nami was essentially leading the Strawhats while Luffy and Zoro were gone.
I like how the whole "fighting for your freedom" idea slowly evolved with the side characters getting the will to fight.
Again, a consistent narrative sticking to the ideas it established from beginning to end. The pacing was good, too.
So, really liked the world and most characters, but I wasn't a big fan of Tesoro, especially the too sudden attempt at a backstory. I think it should've had a more consistent setup like the kids had. None of Tesoro's subordinates really stood out to me much, either. It was the screwing around in the city part that was most fun.
Omatsuri, Z and Shiki were a lot more memorable because I feel like the build up to the final confrontation lead to a much more climatic conclusion. Shiki wasn't all that notable personality-wise, either, in hindsight to me, but he worked for the purpose of his movie much better. Tesoro was an attempt at complexity that wasn't set up all that well. Victim turned asshole tropes need very careful setup, I think.
Good fun OP movie, I think. Yeah, felt consistent all across.
Edit: Wait, I knew this wasn't composed by Kohei Tanaka, but I didn't expect my instinct to guess Yuki Hayashi be right. It is very My Hero Academia.

Hiiiii! Sorry to necrobump this (and others OP FILM threads) but I was wondering if anyone here has some link, or another way to access, Oda's sketches from the movie. I tried to search online but most of the things I came across (on Pinterest, zerochan, etc) were with really crap quality, so I decided to try here. Thanks in advance!
