Viz Volume 9 announced.

I just got my new issue of Previews (a magazine dedicated to previewing the newest American comic books, they also do manga by Viz and Tokyopop) and I saw Volume 9 set for December.

It retains the same name as the Japanese tanko (Tears) and it seems that they call Cocoyashi village "Coco" village. I think they got this from 4Kids.

Saw-Nosed Arlong is now "Saw-Toothed" Arlong. But the volume may come out next month since when they announced Volume 8 for September and it came out in October.

I'm sure that Viz hasn't learned from their mistakes of following the 4Kids format and are still calling him Zolo. I'm also pretty sure that Luffy still starts his attacks with "Gum Gum" (which is not as cool as "Gomu Gomu no").

The language is probably still cut despite the fact the language in One Piece is very foul and removing it just makes the dialouge seem weird.

I found it easier to only support Viz in manga like Bleach and Yu Yu Hakusho since those seem to have good translations and not buy One Piece English tankos. It would be faster to learn Japanese and buy from Sasuga then wait for Viz to catch up to Japan (Volume 39 comes out in three days according to the AP front page). Meaning they are currently 31 volumes behind.

Plus, Scanlations suck a lot, so why bother reading those when they don't even bother to update. Espcially since there's been more then one translator for them.

I just wanted to get that off my chest.

Volume 8 comes out Oct 4. And why are you discrediting Viz? If you hate it don't buy their issues and get tanks.

It is a bit annoying they've chosen to use more 4Kids names than the original Japanese ones but I like collecting the graphic novels. So long as they call Smoker Smoker, I'm happy (though I get the horrible feeling in the back of my head that they won't). And frankly I can live without seeing everyone swear left, right and centre.

As for calling his moves "Gomu Gomu no", the average Joe won't get why the moves are called that. I do agree I like those three words but Gum Gum also works.

Anyway, I've been aware this one will have a December/January release for a while. Amazon.co.uk added it to their list a month or two ago and number 10, penciled in for an April release is also on the list.

Oh and if you find a good way to learn Japanese please let me know as I have considered buying the tankos.

I feel the same way. Well perhaps someone could write in and ask if they plan to use his original name or his 4Kids version. However they do seem like they'll be calling Hao (from Shaman King) Hao rather than Zeke, but if I'm correct, Shaman King and One Piece aren't done by the same people.

I don't think they should do that. That means we'll only get about three Bleach books a year rather than six. And Shaman King is a good series IMO.

Viz were the first ones to use the "Gum Gum" translation (which I don't think is a bad one), and that came out years before 4Kids got ahold of the series so they're not "copying" them in that respect. Plus, I heard the Zolo thing comes more from legal troubles (does anyone really care about this anymore?).

And Arlong wasn't called "Saw-nosed Arlong," it was just "Arlong the Saw."

Viz's translation is pretty good IMO. And the stuff in that volume has already come out in Shonen Jump. They've been using Gum Gum the entire time and Zolo since vol.5.

Gomu = Gum/Rubber/Eraser
The "no" has to do with the relation to the attack being made I think.
It makes absolutley no sense to simply leave something like that untranslated. This isn't like Kenshin, which actually takes place in Japan. Theres nothing really japanese about Luffy/One Piece/ or pirates.

And with the manga rated T for Teen...as in 13 and up, one would expect violence, blood, swearing, and random other stuff that 13 year olds understand and already have ideas and morals about...but i just think people think kids are stupider then they really are.

YES, they've translated "gomu gomu" as "gum gum" from the beginning. Is it a big deal? Not really. And complaining about the "no" being removed is a bit silly, since from my understanding "no" is just a link between a descriptor and the descripted…

Question: Does, or can, "yashi" mean "village" in any way? If so, would that make "Coco Village" fairly accurate?

Personally, I liekd Cocoyashi, mostly for its double-wordplay, but I don't mind Coco Village much. In fact, I don't even think they've used the name that much in the manga.

I know it's been said a billion times before, but Zolo has nothing do with the Zorro movie coming out, and Viz can't simply decide to switch back to Zoro, because the are owned by Shueisha and Shueisha made the executive decision to trademark Zolo.

I really hope they don't change to "Chaser" though. That would be truly pointless.

I really hope, though, that Viz introduces Logue Town as "Rogue Town". I know it's Logue in the original Japanese, but Rogue Town is an example of an "excellent," translation; the name fits well into the contex of a pirate age, and isn't technically wrong. Kinda like translating a haiku and having the English follow the correct format.

Saw-Toothed Arlong is an incorrect translation, as Saw-Fish have dome teeth and only the nose is jagged.

I hate the Zoro-Zolo thing, but modern One Piece readers are too young (or stupid) to read about Arsène Lupin III.

And it's not 'a cultural difference' because there are indeed words which young children are not supposed to use and none of them show up in OP.

And regarding all edits, it's easy to see that the US publishers don't have a lot of faith in OP which is sad but true. Just as with the 4Kids dub they're trying to make it appeal to a wide audience and by doing so end up cutting out the meat and potatos of the series. I think most of us have realized that and don't give a damn by now. So taking out stuff like the word 'yashi' makes it more accessible to the younger reading crowd whereas a series like Naruto (especially now since readership has JUMPED since the TV debut) thrives on being inaccessible to the younger crowd. Why? Because that's what US Japanese animation fans want in the first damn place ^O^ An overwhelming majority of fans like Japanese animation simply because it IS different and they're sticking it to the MAN by accepting foreign stuff over the domestic variety. I'm not pointing any fingers to people here (especially since we have such a culturally diverse crowd), just saying that's how it is in the big picture.

I happen to think they made a huge error doing that in the manga and as it stands at the moment, Viz is certainly reprehensible for not offering at least some kind of pure version.

I'm still not turning into a lunatic with respect to 4Kids because of the chance of uncut DVDs. But if they don't offer them, they're making a grave error with what could be a huge success for them.

Editing is not always evil. Keep in mind the only way they get to keep translating it is if they make a profit. I've been a loyal viz reader for a while, and I've never known them to irrationally or randomly mistranslate. They do what they have to do to keep themselves in the black

No, it isn't. You can't copyright a name.

The "problem" here is that Shueisha owns the trademark for Roronoa Zolo; a search of the US Patent Office for Roronoa Zoro reverts to the Zolo spelling. The spelling was most likely adopted for marketing purposes, which was dictated by 4Kids choosing Zolo over Zoro. They trademarked numerous names all at once several months after the One Piece dub appeared (almost two years after the manga first appeared in this country), which means that they made a deliberate choice to use that spelling, and Viz complied. A quick check of the online patent search reveals that the name was trademarked in December 2004; a quick chance at my Shonen Jump collection reveals that Viz switched to Zolo in their December issue. Synergy or whatever.

Viz has no reason to antagonize their corporate masters by using a spelling other than the one they have trademarked. Don't like it? Then write Shueisha and tell them, because Viz probably couldn't change it if they wanted to. If they did, then some higher-up would probably tell them to change it back so it doesn't interfere with marketing.

If they really wanted to be anal about it, then they probably would have changed the wanted poster that had Roronoa Zoro written on it a few chapters ago. So long as they don't edit Oda's art, I'm not really concerned with a few dialogue changes here and there.
