It's bad enough that it's ambiguous whether he thought of G2 and G3 before Water 7 or after being schooled by CP9.
On that note, does anyone think it's possible Luffy already came up with G5? Maybe it's something extremely risky for him. He's been training for a VERY long time, after all.

How about increasing his ability to rapidly expand and compress during attacks. Instead of hitting once Luffy might end up hitting his target many times in an instant. Kinda like Soru only instead of using it for movement Luffy compresses the arm or leg he uses to attack the opponent in the moment he hits his target and expands it again to hit him once more and then he does it again and again. I'd say such an ability would fit hit powers and the ability wouldn't infringe upon his other abilities so that he can still combine them if necessary. Gear 3 would remain the unrivaled heavy hitter and Gear 2 the fastest mode, Gear 4 would cause more damage by hitting more often instead of just with more power. I'm sure there will come a day when he combines all three of them. Gear 2 to increase his speed, Gear 3 to increase his damage and Gear 4 to increase the amounts of hits.
I will stick to my "living dial" guess.
I want Luffy to be capable of sending shockwaves like Luccis Rokuougun as he blocks and countrs enemy attacks.
Would look great and if it has some limitations like damaging his body/ making for him impossible to strech and some general limit on how much he can redirect from enemys attack back at him I think it would be very deadly and balanced technique that would add to Luffys arsenal and give him chances against even stronger enemies than Doflamingo.

Maybe he loses his ability to stretch for a while? It wouldn't be as visually apparent as the G3 side effects, but at least hinder him significantly in combat.

Each gear was inspired from Luffy's experiences from traveling. Gear 2: Soru Gear 3: Giants…probably...they were at Enies Lobby Gear 4: Well what has Luffy experienced enemy trouble wise since the timeskip?

His foot speed is at the very least inspired by Soru. He stated that observation with the Blueno fight. And why didn't he use Gear 2 during his 1st fight with CP9? He has been thinking of how to get stronger since the Aokiji fight but didn't use the gears until his second CP9 fight. That is some time to draw from ALL those experiences which would include the first CP9 fight.

Why is it obvious he made Gear 4 during the timeskip? You don't even know what it is yet. It is very possible he created it then but to say it is an obvious given with no stated proof is obnoxious and condescending.

Would clash too much with Sanji as well as Sabo.
Gears need to be much more unique than that.
Not to mention that the power you are mentioning is basically Gear 2 plus full body haki.
Gears involve directly using his rubber powers. Gear 4 would use some new aspect of rubber powers rather than old gears + haki.

Red Hawk is the friction caused between Gear second + Armament at full speed.

Explaining the above sentence ^ isn't all that difficult: Sanji's Ki turned into anger (Doki). I'm sure most of you have heard the line "Kokoro goes doki doki" (which is the onomatopoeia for a fast heart beat) – well, think of it as another word play from Oda, which fits since he's usually so emotional (whether it be anger or love) and a lady chaser. His Ki (heart/emotion/mind/center etc) became Doki (anger), Jyabura was warning him that emotions would cloud him in battle but with Sanji, it was more like, well, the opposite.
Adding to what I just tried to explain above, think of his other technique using Diable Jambe - Hell Memories. I think we all know that to trigger it, Sanji has to recall the "unfair" time he had to spend in Kamabakka Kingdom - which to Sanji, makes him rage with anger.. Oh! There's also the thing in Thriller Bark, when he was burning with anger.. which everyone else could see but everyone deemed as a gag.
It's not really an added explanation but I just find it pretty interesting how the Straw Hats back then fit the whole "Seven Dimensions of Wellness" - though the color for each category varies. Just real quick though, Zoro's Asura is his Sakki (killing intent), like each time people think he's shown CoC (which I'm not saying he won't get), it's his Sakki. Haki for instance can spread fear of the individual/person to the opponent(s), but Sakki spreads fear that they will die/be killed.
Think of it as meeting a serial killer holding a knife and full of blood lust for instance, you will feel the danger towards you and commonly enough - be unable to think/freeze. 'Shun Goku Satsu' for example is a move in SF games that can freeze opponents(and time in-game) and also unleash a killing combo, much like what Zoro did against Monet - though Zoro has already shown Sakki since Enies Lobby.
The technique he used is called: 鬼気 九刀流 阿修羅 (Kiki Kyūtōryū: Ashura). Do you see the character for 'Ki'? It's easier to explain compared to Sanji's. You're right and wrong. Thinking Gear 2nd was inspired by Soru is a popular misconception though. Read Chapter 388, page 7. Luffy seemingly disappearing IS when he's using Soru. "All my techniques will evolve" meant that his Gear Second technique pushes his body to it's potential, that's why Blueno comments later how his body is able to use Soru. So Gear Second =/= Soru, Luffy goes Gear Second then he can use Soru. As to why Luffy didn't use Gear Second during the first CP9 encounter? We can only go by what Nami said about them being serious, I suppose.

Since this is a Gear 4th thread though, I already mentioned it but I just expect a hard, compact Luffy, both with speed and power, but both of which is less than Gear 2nd and 3rd (which his stretching power could be likely being the drawback, like others have said). I don't wanna try and guess how the mechanics would work since that's not my thing, but the reason why I expect it is because, in the New World, where his opponents are basically candidates to also being the Pirate King.. a slug fest between just two individuals in the final fight just seems.. I don't know, manly? While it's simple and different from his other gears, it's a Gear that lets him do that.

Most of his attacks are based of Guns / Rifles. Elephant Gun is a powerful Rifle and Grizzly Magnum is a Semi-Automatic Pistol. ( Really powerful pistol ). Maybe his next named attacks will be shotguns seeing as he's named pistols and rifles some sniper scopes,next could be shotguns ?

I was adding to your thought by bringing up that the gun (or at least, weapon) portion of attack names is mostly consistent, and isn't solely about the 'base' attack names; it's also part of his naming scheme for attacks in general. I wasn't arguing with anything you said.

I can concede that Luffy is doing his own form of Soru. I ask though…can he do Soru not in Gear 2? I don't recall a time he has. And nobody said Gear 2 equals Rokushiki. Luffy can't do most of those techniques. He learned what he could from mere observation. And you want to state it has only been 3 days in the New World...then I rebuttal with how many days did it take Luffy to learn Soru? Couldn't have been longer than a day or so if that. And thats assuming he has been thinking about Soru from his first fight with CP9 and not from the Blueno fight which could mean he learned it in minutes if not seconds. And from Luffy's quote to Blueno stating he has been THINKING of a way to get stronger since the Aokiji fight. So you got from Aokiji fight to Ennies Lobby to THINK of gears. That's from arcs Long Ring Long Land, Water 7, then Enies Lobby. We never see him use ANY gears in a fight or even practice it until then. And how much time happened between there...I don't recall but it couldn't have been a month. Maybe a week or 2...I guess...that feels like too much. You have no idea when he was satisfied with what Gear 2 and 3 were to be useful in battle.
I don't recall his 6 months of training being exclusive to not training Haki. I thought it was that from what Rayleigh's goal for Luffy to master the basics of Haki. Luffy went ahead of schedule...doesn't mean he stopped training Haki. You believe he spent 6 months training a new gear or gears and moves without incorporating Haki in them? We are seeing Gear 2 and Gear 3 moves with Haki so I think if he did train Gear 4 in the timeskip...he trained Haki with it.
And Luffy just making up ALL his moves with no frame of reference to me seems improbable. Who does that?
And saying take a hint is showing me your arrogance. There are more eloquent ways to argue a point and not come off pompous. It is very possible he came up with Gear 4 and up during the timeskip...but it is not a given yet..."hint" and all.
I can concede that Luffy is doing his own form of Soru. I ask though…can he do Soru not in Gear 2? I don't recall a time he has. And nobody said Gear 2 equals Rokushiki. Luffy can't do most of those techniques. He learned what he could from mere observation. And you want to state it has only been 3 days in the New World...then I rebuttal with how many days did it take Luffy to learn Soru? Couldn't have been longer than a day or so if that. And thats assuming he has been thinking about Soru from his first fight with CP9 and not from the Blueno fight which could mean he learned it in minutes if not seconds. And from Luffy's quote to Blueno stating he has been THINKING of a way to get stronger since the Aokiji fight. So you got from Aokiji fight to Ennies Lobby to THINK of gears. That's from arcs Long Ring Long Land, Water 7, then Enies Lobby. We never see him use ANY gears in a fight or even practice it until then. And how much time happened between there...I don't recall but it couldn't have been a month. Maybe a week or 2...I guess...that feels like too much. You have no idea when he was satisfied with what Gear 2 and 3 were to be useful in battle.

I agree that Luffy is very impulsive but it's not like he doesn't think EVER. Luffy will fight on whims but my argument was that he probably drew from his experiences like the pinwheel for some battles. I don't think it unreasonable for Luffy to think of something that interests him and use it for inspiration of sorts later.
If he did Soru in regular not 2 gear then great. But I don't recount it pre timeskip for sure.

My guess is during that scene where he was standing still while Bellamy attacked him with spring hopper he figured out how to turn his own legs into springs on the spot.
Defeating Dofla with Bellamy's attack would be a nice touch.

But you are saying that G2 was somehow inspired by something in this martial arts despite the fact that there are no similarities.

None? To use Soru, all you have to do is kick the ground several times in an instant. That's incredibly simplistic.

Luffy stated that he learned everything Rayleigh had to teach in a year and a half. There was no need to continue training you already completed without first improving your main moveset. No one claimed that he didn't incorporate Haki into anything.

not sure if anyone mentioned this before but when luffy is in his gear 2 form, his moves are associated with Hawk and Eagle where both of them are of great agility but they are small in size so explains Luffy's speed with lack of power in his attacks … Where in gear 3 his attacks are named after Elephant and Grizzly (Bear) which shows the strength however these animals are slower than usual.
So what I'm trying to reach to is that gear 4 will be associated with an animal that has both the speed and power (my thoughts lion, tiger ... etc) where his attacks has a pretty good speed and is powerful in terms of strength.
Most of his attacks are based of Guns / Rifles. Elephant Gun is a powerful Rifle and Grizzly Magnum is a Semi-Automatic Pistol. ( Really powerful pistol ). Maybe his next named attacks will be shotguns seeing as he's named pistols and rifles some sniper scopes,next could be shotguns ?
Shotguns are insanely powerful, but they are short range. It would be fitting to a less elastic version of Luffy as they are short ranged but powerful.

What do you mean ONLY a gaming trope? I wouldn't be wanting to shoot my opponent 50 metres away with a shotgun and even if something did hit, the power would be lacking

Why is it obvious he made Gear 4 during the timeskip? You don't even know what it is yet. It is very possible he created it then but to say it is an obvious given with no stated proof is obnoxious and condescending.
He was on an island for 6 months all by himself. He could have additional 5 gears as we speak.
