Hello, fellow gameophiles.~ When a new game comes out here on AP, it tends to spark real-time discussion as people post their progress and whatnot and share their thoughts as they play. There's usually pages upon pages of ripe discussion on the game in question. But then it drops off over time as everyone beats the game and goes on with their lives. Sure, SOMEBODY's out there playing Chrono Trigger right now, but there's a lack of any large-scale discussion to take part in. And I bet you've been looking for an excuse to replay Ocarina of Time, haven't you?

Enter the AP Retro Game Party:
1. Once a month, AP members cast their vote on a game to play from any era up to the N64/PSX/Dreamcast era for consoles, and GBA era for handhelds.
2. During the month, we will replay the game. Most of us will play start to finish, but you are free to load up past saves or play up to wherever you please, so long as your discussion is about what you've played during the month.
3. As we play, we simply post and share our opinions and thoughts, as frequently as we'd like. These opinions and thoughts are meant to be completely based off of this playthrough, though you may make comparisons to old opinions.

That's basically the gist of it. Everything else is discussed below in detail.

Mission

Encouraging and Promoting Discussion: We're here to promote discussion and thoughts on the game in real-time as you play it, much like in newer game threads as everyone gets a hold of a new game and plays through it. This is the perfect chance to schedule a replay of those dusty old classics, because we're all doing it! As for discussion itself, anything goes. Thoughts on plot, gameplay, presentation, design, whatever, it's all up for discussion!
Evaluating Prior Conceptions and Adopting New Perspectives: You might think Super Mario World was the best game ever last time you played, but how do you feel about it now? Do you feel like you enjoy the game more? Do you feel like you enjoy it less? We want you to share your altered or unaltered opinions and new perspectives as you play through the game! So come into the experience with an open but critical mind.
Experiencing Classics Again or for the Very First Time: While the idea is to relive games we've already played, there's still plenty of room here for first-time players. We want to see new players get to enjoy the things we did so many years ago! With that in mind, however, spoilers simply cannot be avoided within this discussion. Some of us know who is going to die at the end of Disc Five, and this particular death is probably going to play a pivotal role in the experience of the game.

1. If you're not currently playing the game as part of the thread, we don't care.
2. You are free to mention prior playthroughs and your thoughts on them, so long as you're primarily posting new material and new reactions AS YOU ARE PLAYING THE GAME. Old thoughts are meant to be simply comparisons only.
3. You are free to enter the discussion at any time, so long as we have not moved on to a new game. It's okay to start at the end of the month, just be warned you probably won't finish with the rest of us.
4. Be mindful of spoilers at your own discretion. Basically, anything you as a player think is best kept a secret for a new player should be tagged appropriately (or vague or something).
5. Golden Rings are not an acceptable form of currency in this thread. Sorry, Sonic fans, your money's no good here.

Now then, this month's adventure begins today!, and the game you guys chose is Super Metroid.
Don't have a copy of Super Metroid? You can play it on Wii Virtual Console, and I believe Wii U and 3DS VC as well. Have access to neither? Emulation is an option.

I think that's about all I can say. The Party will begin on March 1st, but until then, I guess feel free to discuss the idea as a whole, and recommend some games for April.~ Remember, this idea only works if the games we play are games YOU want to play.

Woo, Super Metroid! It's been a while since my last play-through, so it'll be nice to revisit my personal best game of all time.

My last playthrough of Super Metroid was about a year or so ago (on my original SNES copy!), and I beat it in, like, two or three days with 100% completion. Of course, this is from a guy who's played it numerous times throughout his life.

So yeah, it's a little too soon for me to do another playthrough, but I hope you all enjoy it and I'm really looking forward to see what Wagomu thinks of it.

That's okay. I just want to hear the viewpoint of someone who didn't grow up playing the game. Does it live up to the hype, or is it not quite as good as you hoped? What aspects do you like about it?

Yeah, the original NES Metroid really hasn't aged well. It's really tedious and has hallways that go on way too long. And Metroid II (for Gameboy) is okay, just…kinda bland.

Whereas Super Metroid is still probably the best game in the franchise.

First time I play this game, and the first relatively pseudo-boss character already kicked my ass. My I suck at this.

Question: does the morphing ball state give me some sort of invicibility? And does the bomb do any sort of damage?

No

It can damage enemies, but it's generally not that useful as a weapon unless you're in a small morph-ball-only area and are trying to get rid of the crawling enemies. Mainly though, it's used for clearing blocks and obstacles.

Anyway, keep at it. I'm sure you'll get the hang of it.

It's pretty annoying. The rooms looks really similar and there's no map to show you where you are. Also just slow. I gave up.
I haven't played it but I think Zero Mission is a remake and you might as well try that.

Also I started Super Metroid a long time ago and never finished, guess this is a good opportunity to tackle it again.

Super Metroid is great. I played it again just a couple months back with Captain Usopp when I was visiting her. Did it in 4 or 5 hours. Not good enough for the best ending, but pretty good for having not touched it in years and getting about 90% of the items. Did Crocomire flawlessly, that was pretty fun.

There's a couple competitive speed runs that are pretty cool to watch, I'll post those later. Don't want to spoil folk's experiences.

Like fedcom recommended, Metroid: Zero Mission is your best bet if you're really inclined to play the "original". Although the game also comes with the NES original as an unlocked bonus upon completion!

Really, Zero Mission and Fusion are great Metroid games to get into if any of you beat Super Metroid and crave for more.

Man, this game definitely doesn't handhold, for better or worse. It's not the most difficult game I've played, but it really doesn't like guiding players. It took me some time to realize that the missile doors require five missiles. I don't know what motivated that design choice, since honestly my first instinct when my missile didn't work was to look around for another path. I know the things flash when you hit them with missiles, but I wasn't sure if I was doing something wrong or if maybe that was just the effect of hitting something with a missile. There's also some moments where the path forward is just weirdly obscured. On the other hand, I do like how this is applied to optional content like upgrades, where it rewards attention to your surroundings.

Just beat Kraid and entered Norfair for real. Couple spoilers on puzzles and fights:

! When I talk about a "weirdly obscured" path, I'm specifically talking about the path to Kraid from the Brinstar/Norfair elevator room. I spent a lot of time walking back and forth, knowing that there had to be a path through, but not sure how to find it. But it turns out you need to fire a super missile in the corner of the room? It would have been fine if it was even a missile, but my instinct is not to was super missiles on random guesses. It took enough bashing my head against the wall to convince myself that was a good idea. I'm fine with this sort of trick being used for optional content, but it doesn't add a whole lot to the main game experience.
! I also didn't realize I could dash, so it took me some time to get past the disappearing bridge in Brinstar. The game is so much vertical space and occupied me with so much jumping and shooting that I sort of neglected the other buttons, haha.
! I do like the bosses so far, since they require some attention to figure out and skill to defeat, but they're a little easy once you've got the tricks down. Kraid, specifically, went down quick after I realized that you could shoot him to force his mouth open.

The atmosphere and music is also pretty killer and is helped by the near seamless world (with only the elevators being obvious points of separation between areas).

Overall, though, this game makes me appreciate the Metroid Prime games more. There's little I've encountered so far that wasn't straight-up improved by the Prime series, which boasts much more interesting and deeper environments, more atmospheric sound, more interesting enemy encounters plus all the additional lore and the scanning feature. I'm not all that far into the game, though, so maybe there's more to it than what I'm seeing.

! You can use bombs to reveal hidden blocks. They won't destroy them, just change the appearance to a block with an icon of the weapon needed. When in doubt, bomb the crap out of everything.

Ah, the good ol' days where it really did pay to read the instruction booklet. Or have a friend who already knew how to play it and learn from him, which is pretty much how I did it.

And no, I'm not saying, "Durr, yeah, of COURSE you should have read the instructions!", but I guess I've always taken my inherent knowledge of the games mechanics for granted. But yeah, I can see where you're coming from.

It would have been easier to pick up on if regular doors had the same restriction with beam shots. It also doesn't help that at that point, you only have five missiles to play with. At one point, I actually did try unloading all my missiles on a red door, but must have shot one off before, so it didn't open, making the trial and error take longer than necessary. It makes me wonder who thought that was the right design choice, since I can't really grasp what it adds to the game, but they clearly went out of their way to implement it.

its precisely because you have an early limit of 5 missiles, which are powerful shots. It takes everything you have to open a door, it keeps you from going too far too fast, or having too much power ammo after opening the area. (And that was a carryover from the original Metroid as well)

Later on when you have a ton of missiles and that's no longer an issue red doors pretty much stop appearing and they become locked in some other way.

I just got the grapple beam. I'm pretty lukewarm on this game, unfortunately. I've been hoping for some great moment where it all clicks and is suddenly amazing, but it's all pretty underwhelming. Maybe my expectations were set too high? Maybe it's just because Metroid Prime is superior in near literally every way? I just can't see what separates it from the other metroidvanias. It's not a bad game, just not a huge standout.

It being the first really polished one is a big part of it. The level design, puzzles, exploration and secrets are very well done, as is how the game guides and teaches you as it goes. The music and mood is great, the graphics still hold up pretty well all things considered, and the stuff a practiced and skilled player can do is amazing. The joy of running boots going at full speed and doing crazy air flips and sheer momentum and control and doing wall jumps and spins is pretty fantastic. (And your first exploratory 12 hour game is neat, but its not until you have a mastery of it and can do a sub 3 hour fast run of it that its really great.) And watching a pro speedrunner do a roughly 1 hour run is a thing of beauty.

Watch this when your done. Its not too spoilery, but would hate to ruin anything, it explains better than I can.

But yes, coming to it 20 years later after everything else has ripped it off and built from its template and thus there's been a lot of games like it, including another several Metroid games, is a bit rough. Obviously Symphony of the Night built from there, and later Metroids, and tons of other platformers… but the actual design and pacing and discovery of the game itself is still pretty impeccable.

I run into similar problems with the N64 Mario and Zelda games which everyone says are incredibly brilliant but just frustrate me with some of the dated mechanics and lack of camera control (due to only one analog) when I'd already played the games that followed before ever touching them.

I guess it is really some prototype blues, but I'm not getting a really great experience out of it. The controls often feel sluggish and have weird quirks, like how jumping slows you down or how you must be standing absolutely still to turn into the morph ball. It even took me some time to figure out how to use the elevator when I first encountered it because I wasn't absolutely still when I pressed down on it the first time. It doesn't help that I'm using a keyboard, but these are still issues that exist in the main game design. Plus, I don't think bits like the game's atmosphere even hold up without putting it in perspective. "It's pretty good for an SNES game," I have to tell myself. So it definitely suffers from being the influence on everything that came after, like listening to early Cannibal Corpse records after listening to the decades of death metal that ripped it off.

Even at the game's best, though, I'm not feeling anything greater than content with the game. Even overcoming the boss battles doesn't inspire much beyond "oh neat, he's dead." Maybe I've just grown blasé towards this stuff? I'll still be playing through to the end, but so far, this comes off as a 6-7/10 game for me.

I also imagine that coming to it 20 years later, some of the showcase moments, like the sheer sight of seeing screen filling bosses, or bosses like Kraid that are two screen tall, isn't very impressive in and of itself. (Not when modern games do that as a regular enemy type nowadays)

But yes, playing it on keyboard is definitely hampering your experience.

But yeah, its probably mostly hindsight bias of having already played stuff that grew from it.

Playing it on a keyboard myself, yeah, I want my old SNES pad (it no longer exists and I'm still not sure where it fucking went, along with my short but valuable collection of cartridges. . .shit. . .), but I'm managing so far. I even feel like I'm getting better at it! The first stone boss kicked my ass four times in a row, but after that I feel like I've improved quite a bit.

This feels like a dungeon crawler game, except totally action and platform oriented. It's pretty fun overall, but playing it for too long can get a bit on my nerves.

Definitely enjoying the experience, can see why 20 years ago this might've felt like something really impressive in many levels.

Main gripe would've have to be the regular enemies. The bosses look the part, but the rest are quite. . .meh.

Edit: Ok, it's kinda driving me mad now. Like, there are parts where I'm supposed to do absolutely impossible jumps? Or does that mean I shouldn't go there yet? And before you ask, yes, I have the high jump boost. And nope, there's this son of a bitch that's NOT doable, unless there's a catch/trick.

Oh, and the platforming in tight spots filled with lava. . .it might be the keyboard again, but I'm just totally missing the timing. Every time. Samus just stays so much time in the air (like she don't care) I can't seem to land when/where I want.

The spin thingie: why do I sometimes spin when I jump, and sometimes I don't?

I love this game. This is one of the few which, after I've beaten it, I immediately went to play it again.

Once I realized - on my second playthrough - that I could wall jump at any point during the game (without witnessing the weird pseudo-tutorial), my mind was opened to the possibilities. You can skip so many parts of the game once you master the controls and physics feel that the world just became a playground for experimentation on my second playthrough.

I'm going through it again for this AP event and am still blown away. It's kind of funny to see people confused with things that are second nature to me in Super Metroid/Metroid Fusion, but that's probably what I was thinking when I first played the game.

There are some distances that are impossible till you get a late game item. Though crazy speed runners can still manage a lot of those with sheer momentum and dash tricks and bomb-riding and semi-hidden optional abilities, there are a few spots players simply can't reach till near the end. You will eventually get items that make everything reachable without crazy amounts of skill.

The game rewards replay and experienced players quite a bit, but it doesn't punish new players.

Wall jumps might be REALLY hard to do on keyboard incidentally.

That's the keyboard probably. Jumps are really finely controlled once you get used to them and the air time involved.

If you tap the button or hold it will change what you do.

Didn't think of it earlier, but another reason for the five missiles to open red doors, aside from limiting your early stock and showing how important that next room must be if it takes everything you have to open it, is because later in the game, you get super missiles, which DO open red doors in one shot. So another part of the design is to differentiate the power of two different types of ammo through pure intuitive demonstration.

omg, wagomu, I say this cause i luv and respect ya, man, but GET OFF THAT DAMN KEYBOARD AND PLAY THE GAME RIGHT. I have loved this game since it's release, and I still get excited about it to this day. It does not have the reputation it has for no reason. It's earned it. I have played the prime series, myself, and thought they were quite good, but I still hold this game higher.

The game was designed beautifully for game play. You can beat the game normally, but there's not just one way to beat the game. There are so many skills you can pick up and perfect to play this game in new and amazing ways. I'm gonna post a 4 way race. Watch it when you are done and see the amazing things that can be done with the game. It will blow you away.

I love the exploring aspect of the metroid games. This game has AWESOME retro graphics. Music that imo can still compete today. The game guides you along. It doesn't need a heavy story mode. It just lets you play and enjoy. Thank you Robby. I was going to post that vid. You beat me to it though. The controls are supurb as well. It really does sadden me to hear you are trying to play with a keyboard.

This game is simply magic to me, and I can play it over and over. And this is me praising this highly, as an avid Megaman fan.

I agree with captain usopp, playing Super Metroid with a keyboard is like trying to eat nutella with a toothpick.

I remember trying to speedrun it a bit with any%, but Maridia was always a pain. Right now i just beat Kraid and man does the game holds up. Metroid Fusion is still better in terms of action and graphics obviously, but Super Metroid still has its unique charm of just you and Samus in an alien planet that only Metroid Prime 1 & 2 topped.

I'm playing it on the Wii U gamepad lol, the controls are great and it's extraordinarily comfortable.
Anyway I'm loving the music and the general mood of the game. It's definitely a LOT more user friendly than the first NES Metroid.
I don't feel like the combat is great (compared to Megaman X which I'm also playing) but I did just get the charge beam so we'll see.

So…does dying erase all your progress since your last save point? I feel like I just lost about an hour of gameplay

Well if I get like the Charge beam say, and then I die 30 minutes later, I should still have that item. It's not SAVING that's the problem it's losing all your progress when you die like nothing happened since the save point. I can understand that happening if I turn the game off, but I didn't. It basically means you have to go back and save constantly which is a pain in the ass and breaks up the flow (or use save states like I now plan to do :P).

Why would that be? Upon death they just need to teleport me back to the last place I saved really. I just played ALTTP which didn't have this problem.

I said probably. I've got no clue about the actual inner workings of the game, but SNES era is still subject to those kinds of design issues due to memory constraints.

In those games, you keep your shit when you die, instead of being sent to your last save. That's the complaint here.

i think that's part of being spoiled with modern games. You die. you don't deserve that shit. go back and earn it.

actually, I just watched game grumps play zelda 2. that game let you keep stuff after dieing. Danny would grab an item in a dungeon, then die to get out of the dungeon, at some points. I was like, wth. That's not how you play the game.
