This was one of the good things to come out of the Digital Event
Mario and Luigi: Paper Jam
-
-
One of the few good things. So few…
But yeah, this game looks like it'll be pretty fun. I still need to play Dream Team and Sticker Star, though.
[hide]In before someone says I don't need to play Sticker Star.[/hide]
-
Definitely a lock for me, though I hope it doesn't suffer from bloat like Dream Team did (still a good game, mind, but could definitely have been trimmed).
-
Definitely a buy for me as well, but I really want another actual Paper Mario game… and yes Mugen, Sticker Star obviously doesn't count.
-
I knew I could count on you, Fool. :D
-

Better get it off the Club Nintendo site…....if you still got coins, instead of spending real money.
-
But I liked Sticker Star:sad:
I like the idea of the game. Have the Mario and Luigi game mixed with Paper Mario. It does have potential to be a really fun game, but I'm going to be more wary about it this time. I got Dream Team and it wasn't that fun for me. The game didn't feel long per say, but it just didn't have the appeal like Super Star Saga or Inside Story. Still a nice little surprise for the games that were announced that we didn't know about beforehand.
-

I'd rather get Wonderful 101, honestly. It's less coins than Sticker Star. Then again, I can't even get W101, since my brother accidentally bought Link's Awakening twice, so now I don't have enough coins for it. I'm hoping I can make a trade with someone online. If there's anyone who hasn't spent all their coins yet, of course.

What kind of trade?

What kind of trade?
Well, it'd be coins for coins. Basically, a Link's Awakening code, and any other VC games I can get with 595 (I think) coins. If no one bites, I guess I'll just blow all the coins on VC games and be bitter about missing out on getting Wonderful 101 for free because of a dumb mistake that Nintendo won't fix.
On topic: The Treehouse is going to be showing off Paper Jam in a bit.
-
Watching the gameplay on Treehouse right now and… I'm not really feeling it. I don't know what it is, what element makes the original Paper Mario games so much more playable to me, but it's missing from here. As imaginative as it is, it feels a little boring.
-
I'm definitely gonna get it. Haven't played a Mario & Luigi or Paper Mario game I haven't liked (and that includes Sticker Star)
Actually, I still need to play Dream Team.
-
Actually, I still need to finish Dream Team…
-
I like what I saw. It was pretty amusing to see that the guy demoing the game didn't know (or forgot) that you can't hit flying enemies with a hammer. I mean, come on.
Hopefully this gets a demo on the eShop, like Dream Team did.

I can float you W101 if you still want it, my Club Nintendo coins are sitting there with nothing to spend them on (I wanted the mario shirt but I waited to long).

By Dream Team Bros. I felt that the M&L series had pretty much run dry so I'm not too interested. A new Paper Mario game in the spirit of PM64 and TTYD would be the shit though.
-
Does this means Paper Mario is a entirely different Mario? How craaaaazy!
-
Yoko Shimomura for composer or bust
How would one explain the paper universe now? Within a magical book or an alternate dimension or something? It's surreal.
-
Definitely a must-buy for me as well. Loved all the prior Paper Mario turn based games and all the prior Mario & Luigi games.
Here's a full overview of what we know about the game as well (contains some spoilers):
! – Quest mode: find seven Toads in a field area
– This has traditional Mario and Luigi gameplay
– Control Mario with A
– Control Luigi with B
– Control Paper Mario with Y
– E3 demo has players going through a small field on the lookout for these missing Toads
– 3 of the Toads eventually pop out disguised as a wooden gate to shield themselves from Bowser
– You then learn a dash move to help catch a Toad running around rapidly
– The final Toad is located through a hidden pathway
– Use Paper Mario to slide past some rocks to find the last Toad
– Paper Mario’s abilities open up how puzzles are solved
– Boss mode also included
– In the demo, a magikoopa sets you on Petey Pirhana
– Use cards during battle
– Collect stars each time you hit an attack successfully that lets you spend points on cards that helped the gang in a number of ways
– Use cards to do things like increase defense for a few turns
– At one point in the battle, Petey Pirhana chases Mario and Luigi
– Paper Mario saves the day by turning into a paper airplane that helps lift the brothers as Petey flung mud balls at them
– Once stopped, Paper Mario returned to his current form and smashed him for more damage
– Different set of battle commands for Paper Mario than Mario and Luigi
– MaRIO and Luigi have then traditional moves like jump and hammer
– Paper Mario has copies
– Copies disappear as Paper Mario is hit
– The more copies he has, the more damage he can dish out with his jumping attack
– Papercraft Mode: Mario, Luigi and Paper Mario control a paper mecha that is moved around to attack giant, paper-shaped Goombas on the field
– To charge up the mecha’s power, there are pads strewn about that initiate a rhythm-based game where you press Y each time a wave reached the end of the circle
– The better you’re at it, the quicker the meter will charge
– Once charged, you can wipe out the Goombas by charging at them with the B button
– Once the enemy is down, the Mario mecha can spring out of its pad and unleash a devastating pounce that often destroys the enemy
– Mecha King Goomba is the boss of this mode
– When you dodge from him, Goomba leaves open an opportunity to attack

Gameplay
-
Here's 34 minutes of gameplay
-
Wow that looked so generic, rehashed, and kinda boring. The only thing I found neat was the paper airplane bit at the end.
-
This is just Mario & Luigi, but with Paper Mario as a third partner. I don't see a lick of PM-style gameplay in it. Aside from the "turn sideways to go through walls!" shit, but we all know that's just going to replace the "burrow mario into the ground to get under gates" stuff.
and honestly, I'm a little tired of M&L. Playing Dream Team right now and it's a slog. Too much words, and the Bros Items take too long (and still aren't as cool as Bros Moves). Luiginary Attacks take forever and almost always feel like a waste. maneuvering through the dream world also feels so full of gimmicks. And Paper Jam looks like more of that, with Paper Mario replacing Dreamy Luigi.
Worst of all, this is now the 3rd game in a row bearing the Paper Mario name, but bearing little resemblance to the original Paper Mario games. Maybe it's time to accept that I'll never get a followup to ttyd and try to enjoy what I get instead.
-
This is literally a dream crossover a friend and I have talked about many times. It'll be great.
And the mechanics of Sticker Star weren't that bad. There were just no memorable characters, locations, dialogue, set pieces or story elements of any kind.
-
But where is paper luigi?
I think I'll get this. I really enjoyed dream team, Definitley the second best mario and luigi game, but whether I get at pain is different. With all the fire emblems I think next year will be filled with heavy RPGs for me.

The mechanics weren't bad? you mean how the game encouraged you to cheese the boss battles and discouraged you from actually fighting any of the overworld battles?
It wasn't irredeemable garbage, but it wasn't good by any means.

I said they weren't "THAT bad", I never said they were good.
I believe if you took that core sticker battle system then added everything I said was missing, then you'd end up with a pretty good game. Not great and certainly not the best but pretty good.
My point was that the battle mechanics were nowhere near the worst part of the game. It's basically a weird take on turn-based RPG-lite battle systems.

Fair enough. SS is a strange game that has no story/characters, and thus ought to sell itself on the gameplay, except the gameplay was bad as well. They didn't even try to play with the level themes that much, it was straight NSMB shit.
To try to turn this back on-topic, I'm sure Paper Jam will be better than SS, because it has the M&L battle engine and the possibility of interesting locales. So there's that at least!

It bothers me that not enough people are noticing how garbage this is.
Mario and Luigi series tend to have original characters and environments and stories. Same with Paper Mario.
Literally all we have seen of this is just fighting mario baddies with mario powers we've always had and, woohoo, another giant mario concept. Plus, more presence of Paper Mario without actually being Paper Mario.
Sorry, I just honestly feel like so far this just looks like a lazy way to make money off the paper mario hype without actually creating something original and creative. Maybe it will become more interesting over time, but right now it baffles me we have people already throwing down money and claiming it as an insta-buy. It feels like encouraging Nintendo laziness.
-
Psshhh! If this game has the humor of Mario & Luigi or Paper Mario then I'll be happy. The battle/world mechanics of Mario & Luigi makes sure that the other elements of the game will be entertaining.
It's not too original from what we've seen, but as fan service for fans of these series? I think I'll be quite happy.
That's not to say it's an insta-buy (no game is for me based off this little coverage) but if is on par with previous releases I'll be happy. Even if Paper Mario is just to hype, I'm always itchin' for more Mario & Luigi.
Take all of what I said knowing I'm a huge M&L fan. So I'm pretty biased - and I'm from fine with that.

I'm just happy it's like old Paper Mario style turn based combat (without sticker mechanics) that's enough for me to get it even if it is shit
-

Except it's not.
It's pure and simply Mario & Luigi style mechanics. There's nothing Paper Mario about this except Paper Mario "characters", and even that's a stretch since it's only Mario, Peach and Bowser from what we see so far.
There's even the glaring lack of Kammy Koopa going along with Bowser and instead they have some generic Magikoopa. -
Well of course. It's being developed by AlphaDream, not Intelligent Systems.
From what we've seen this game doesn't innovate Paper Mario or M&L for tha matter. In fact it probably won't really be a Paper Mario game. It's just the next M&L game with Paper Mario fan service (from everything I watched on the Treehouse stream this seems to be the case). For that, I'm excited.
If that's not what you want then you'll unfortunately be disappointed.
-
Admittedly I would like more of a 50/50 crossover split (along with SMT X FE, this seems to be a constant Nintendo theme this year), I still think there could be some neat ideas and M&L always has top-notch gameplay.
Although I wonder if Intelligent Systems is working on their own Paper Mario game. After all, they're done with Fire Emblem Fates, and Atlus is mostly developing SMT X FE.
-
Snif, one day …one day
-
I would pay so much money for that.

Or even a just a straight up Wario & Waluigi RPG.
-
Game comes out Sunday, looks like fun
Mod note: sorry I did not find this thread before I made one of my own.
-
Had its since Christmas. It's a lot of fun. The Toad finding segments of it tho are pretty irritating since they just feel like tedious padding.
-
For once North America is last on the release schedule…this makes me sad.

You guys are getting Fates WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY before us. And I know which one I would want first.

What do you mean "for once"?

In my perception, and probably wrong, it seems like most games come out in America/Japan first and Europe and elsewhere get screwed around and the games come late.
In the case for this game, its out in Japan, I believe its out in Europe and doesn't come out in America till th 22nd.

Depends on the game. Some games are more favored by NoE so they get released there first.
Xenoblade is noticeably more lucky in Europe, for example, with chronicles coming out in Europe in 2011 and in the US in 2012. There's also the thing where yoshi's woolly world came out in the US months after europe.

Anyone else pick this up today?

GameXplain review.
-
GameXplain should stick to analysis and err… explanation. They have proven time and time again that they actually suck at games and aren't knowledgable when it comes to gamplay itself, and this review was more of a summary followed by "it was fun." I don't get any value out of it.
-
shrug I usually put up GameXplain reviews for Nintendo games….I believe I posted their discussion/review with Nintendaan when it came out in Europe? Idk. It was more.....critical?
Then you have IGN's take:
I'm looking around, but a lot just seem to be ye ole average Youtuber.
Here's the texual review from Mynintendonews:
http://mynintendonews.com/2015/11/30/mario-luigi-paper-jam-bros-review/ -
I like how this game gave us a look at the Koopaling's personality and relationships at the least.
Edit.
-
I believe I posted their discussion/review with Nintendaan when it came out in Europe? Idk. It was more…..critical?
It's fine when they get a guest because then you hear a more knowledgable opinion, and also the guest usually ends up correcting the interviewer all the time. It was hilarious how often that happened for the Xenoblade Chronicles X Q&A videos. Question: "Can you do blah blah in the game?" Answer: "No, I don't think you can." Guest: "Actually, you can."
