Hmm. Was bored and decided to create this thread. If it breaks any forum rules feel free to close it or whatever.

Anyway the purpose of this thread is to share random fun facts about animals, because nature is just that awesomely random. My favourite type of animals are reptiles

I'll start with an octopus one. Octopuses have neurons on their arms, so their arms have a mind of their own, and therefore the arms are able to react to surroundings and even attempt to search for food once it is severed.

Turkey raised comercially cannot reproduce by themselves.

Was this a random fun fact?

The common side-blotches lizard of the Western U.S. has three polymorphs in which color and behavior correspond in a rock-paper-scissors cycle:

Orange-throated males are ultradominant and maintain both large territories and harems. They bully blues and are cuckolded by yellows.

Blue-throated males are dominant. They maintain smaller territories and guard only one female. Vulnerable to oranges but not yellows.

Yellow-throated males are sneakers and maintain no territory, instead opting to mimic females. Can fool oranges but can't infiltrate blues.

Because the colors and behaviors are highly heritable, populations experience cycles as a strong generation of one color engenders a different dominant color the next generation.

Fun fact about clownfish. They are all born male, and the dominant one becomes female. If the female dies, the next dominant male becomes the new female.

That is what makes Finding Nemo disturbing.

They're also very stupid and very territorial and kind of nasty little fuckers, so I wouldn't put it past them.

The shrike, aka the butcher bird, is possibly the most metal thing in nature.

It's a cute little songbird that catches lizards and insects and then impales them on thorns or fences in order to rip them apart and eat them. It's also crazy territorial and will leave the carcasses of prey on spikes to mark its territory, as well as the heads of other birds.

Hey, remember how a Xenomorph has two sets of jaws?

Those are based on the pharyngeal jaws eels have.

                                      Complicating things since 2009.

The only tree leaves that they eat, eucalyptus leaves (the only thing that they eat) are poisonous by the way. So most of their energy is spent digesting them. So baby koalas eat mama koala's poop first to get used to it.

Dolphins are the biggest assholes in the sea. They gang up to rape other dolphins and kill for fun.

huh Old animal myths are being busted… I thought that ducks and orangutans were only animals that raped.

Darwin's Theory of Evolution may just be a specific case of a more general property of thermalized matter subjected to organized/predictable forms of energy. Are we really the only lifeforms in our local universe? Could there even be "living" creatures inside the Earth? On other planets? Inside stars? In interstellar space?

We know more about the surface of Mars than we know about the sea floor. There could be an entire civilisation down there that we don't know about. Kinda scary.

                                                                                  • Many species of goat lay two eggs, but the older, larger kid frequently kills its younger sibling once it has hatched. Adults do not intervene.
                                                                                  • Goats, being mountain animals, are very good at climbing; they've been known to climb to the tops of trees, or even dams!
                                                                                  • The most distinctive feature of the goat, worn by females, is a piece of dorsal spine that protrudes above their mouths like a fishing pole.
                                                                                  • Goats do not build their own nests, because they are brood parasites. That means that the female goat uses other animals' nests to lay her own eggs.
                                                                                  • Goats are herd animals and will become depressed if kept without any goat companions.
                                                                                  • They fly using their wings and their bodies are covered with scales, as are their long tails.
                                                                                  • Goats are sometimes placed in the rafters of barns to keep an eye on animals and feed stores.
                                                                                  • Goats have a gestation period of five months and the average birth rate for goats is 2.2 kids per year.
                                                                                  • Goats are an intimate symbiosis, in which two species live together as a type of composite organism.
                                                                                  • Goats are small, actually micro animals with segmented bodies. They are usually water-dwelling creatures but can be found in a myriad of places like Antarctic ice.
                                                                                  • Goats are beings of enormous intellectual and psychic powers that once dwelt on the dying world of Yith. They escaped the destruction of their home planet by transferring their minds to the bodies of a species native to Earth, far in the distant past.
                                                                                  • It is said that at Ragnarök, the goat will break free. He will join forces with the enemies of the gods and will then eat Odin.
                                                                                  • Goats are very intelligent and curious animals. Their inquisitive nature is exemplified in their constant desire to explore and investigate anything unfamiliar which they come across.

I…. was about to question one thing but then another came up that made me wonder if anything in that was true..... then another and another until I was laughing too hard.

They're the third, little-known family of amphibians in addition to frogs/toads and salamanders, and they're crazy hard to find because they live underground exclusively in tropical climates. One of the professor's at my university was a leading expert on them but I never got the chance to handle a specimen myself.
