EDIT/UPDATE: Welp, everything up to vol. 80 looks good at a glance, so there you go, it's all getting uploaded right now. Alas, today is the last day i can use this computer, so i can't really finish those last 3 (hopefully five soon) volumes. I used waifu2x-caffe btw if anyone is interested. We would ALL appreciate it. I want to help, let me make that clear. But I'm skeptical that this should even be done unless more than one or two people commit themselves to the cause with some sort of release schedule. We'd have to go to extensive lengths to make sure the quality stays consistent. The story of One Piece is ongoing, and from the beginning it's writer has had a firm sense of where the story needs to go to make us feel. On a reddit post, Captain_M comments just about an entire page of things that'll cause setbacks for scanlators looking to do an even more difficult task (cause it's in color. He wanted to do this but in B+W.) Like, seriously, just about every commenter tore that guy a new one. (Look up "hd manga" on the OP Reddit, the post by u/XunderxHz.) Big thanks for all of those thoughts Captain_M, it's good to get an idea of what we're up against. Still, I REALLY want to see it happen, but with summer school and all that approaching for me idk… There's more I want to say but I'll leave it at that for now. Yeah, I replied to you, lil_kami. I don't mean to redo the scans from scratch, I know that's a monumental undertaking, I used to work on the translated volumes we have currently with a lot of people, and even then it was a tiring process. And I agree that the perfect scenario would be to redo it from scratch, but that seems like too much effort. What I was talking about was running the current translated volumes through the program so there would be no need to do any work beyond that. One volume takes about 15 minutes so it will take a couple of days, then I will upload them somewhere and share them here.

The difference in size is incredible, I wish we could have just the straight up raws at that kind of size. I've spent the last who knows how long staring at pages from the two versions side by side and I honestly can't decide where I fall on the screentone dots being smoothed out. On one hand, everything is so damn sharp in this version, but on the other, those little rough areas are a pleasant reminder that the base, underlying art is all hand drawn, and the texture allows the colour version to distinguish the areas in the same way Oda had tied to do with his original art. You also loose, in the upscaling, a lot of the texture of Oda's traditionally coloured pages as well as some of the cross hatching he uses for the halos around characters. I'm nitpicking here because your version is new and different from what I'm used to, but the bottom line is jesus christ its incredible what we can do with technology now!

Quick little reminder that the "v2" in the name of this thread is because the original version was deleted for becoming too much of a piracy/scanlation hotbed and was causing problems for the site. Maybe it's hypocritical of me to be the one saying it at this point, but we need to be careful about what we're trying to organise here. We've been getting a free pass on the raws, which I assume is because they're not easily available in the west and therefore not in direct competition with the official release for us. I would rather not see another thread removed or worse, legal trouble be made for the site's owners or figures like Stephen or Greg be driven from the site because of what we're doing here. I'm pretty sure the mass raw uploads are pushing the limits as it is, so let's just be careful about taking things any further than that.

As per my last comment, which I maybe should have @'d you as well, the thread was deleted once over scanlations already, so be cautious about posting a ton of links to them, newly upscaled or otherwise.

I'd heard about (what I assume to be) similar technologies being used to remaster backgrounds for old games, things with static backgrounds like the PS1 era final fantasies for example, but it had never occurred to me it could be used for manga this way. Although, having downloaded and flipped through a few more since I last posted, I've found that Crocodile's sand powers reeeeally suffer from the decision to smooth the screentones. That's one area that absolutely needs that grainy texture!

Perhaps it'd be smart for me to migrate these somewhere more secure, with no risk of upsetting anyone. Since these are raws though, I don't exactly think newer fans need these just yet. From the beginning I wanted to keep the texture/roughness, such as in Oda's color spreads. Whenever I used different setting with an image, I'd only get differing results in the dots, or the lineart, which I consider to be just about as good as you can get already. So after the first volume, the rest are done in a consistent process. Sometimes, (like when Rob Lucci was interrogating Iceburg) the dots actually get preserved. At one time I literally thought I was gonna be able to just photoshop my own screentone dots in, but then i thought that I should be vaporized by the fans for messing with the artwork anymore. I'm also upset about the cross-hatching not being PERFECT. What I really wanna do is make an imgur album with a shit-ton of side-by-side comparisons. One more thing I want to point out, there were never any dots on parts that were originally colored black. That's throughout the entire collection btw. Look at the second image. There would never be dots on Chaka's green coat. That's saying something, cause just about every character originally had a lot of solid black coloring.

It's difficult to say where the line is this kind of thing, so I'd suggest maybe a discord server or something to get offsite if things are going any further than what's already here. Though, I hope anyone officially connected to the English release who's reading the thread knows that we've got a bunch of people here who would pick up colour volumes in a heartbeat if they were ever to be translated.
All that gets commented on is the areas that don't quite work and things that get lost in the process, but for most pages it's worked fantastically. There's just bound to be a few outliers across 9000 odd images, since it's not really feasible to look at every page individually. I definitely agree that most people are likely to reject a version with too many changes, even if they are for the release's quality of life or to cover shortcomings that were only generated by the ebook format in the first place. The only place I'd maybe consider such a change is the sand texture, because that one was fairly important. I'm still going through the process of downloading and browsing them all though, so I'll comment if I spot anything else.
And yeah, I wouldn't expect halftones on the areas of solid colour. You'd only want them where Oda himself did it, to cast a character in shadow or emphasise depth of field. (On the topic of the black areas most characters have, you really do have to appreciate the trouble the colour team went through to not only colour those, but illustrate creases and outlines for them that are indistinguishable from Oda's own lineart around them. It's a really high level production.)

For example, on Carrot VC you can see a panel of her in Sulong from attacking Daifuku's fleet, this panel is from volume 88. Therefore i wonder if we will not have several volumes at once with the next release?

Hawkins' card showed panels as far ahead as volume 91 almost six months ago, not to mention the art of Luffytaro and Zorojuro. I've said several times before that I think the team doing the colour volumes has been made to work on the Vivre Cards instead over the past year and we'll get more full volumes after the last two boosters are out and they're free.

I've purchased the volumes and had a quick flip through them and ho boy is it great to have new content after all this time. Redon's posted most of the highlights already, but there's some more sick spreads, especially in volume 86. The one where Big Mom starts screaming for the first time is beautiful.
It's worth noting that Tankman is still coloured grey here. There was some debate when the vol 89 cover came out over Oda possibly retconning all of Luffy's Gear 4 haki to be red like the anime, but I think we can call it 100% confirmed that it's only for Snakeman now.
The manga's brighter colouring for the mirror world continues to be a lot more pleasant to look at than the anime's dim, murky version.
The Orbit (the cruise ship Sanji travels on as a kid) is coloured differently in volumes 7 and 84. I don't think we're ever told exactly how long Sanji was on it for though, so maybe it got a paint job before the encounter with Zeff. (All the more likely if it took a stray bullet or two on its way out of the war zone and got a hasty fixing up. That can't be a good look for a cruise ship.)
