Oda's Interviews

Hey hey now, he has the right to his opinion… even if he didn't really really orate it well enough.
But I think One Piece is fine the way it is. It being more mature wouldn't hurt, but it wouldn't really make the series that much better - since one of the series' trademarks is its persistent humor and wacky tone. The series is able to switch back and forth between drama and comedy so well.
-

Having the right to an opinion and having the right to not allow your opinion to be critiqued if you declare it in a public place for public consumption are two different beasts.
-
Making the series more mature would actually be what would cause Oda's wings to be clipped lol.
-
But guys, everything should be Harry Potter! Artists shouldn't be able to do what they like, they should do what I like!
That's a bad reference,Rowling only satisfied half the demographic.:getlost:

@Kaido:

He simply doesn't understand or appreciate the fact that One Piece is so good because of it's uncanny simplicity.
Those who want mature masterpiece should read Berserk, period.

OP already got way more darker and mature after the timeskip by seeing themes tackled as racism, drugging children etc.
OP is still a shonen manga and so shouldn´t be confused with a seinen series, but for my taste Oda definitely puts everywhere mature themes in his epos.
But i assume without showing people being slaughtered some will never be satisfied…too bad for them^^ -

If the serie has matured it's only marginal the same way people saying Luffy has matured or Usopp is less a coward. -

Oda is gonna be responsible for a judge for new manga award (1st round).[hide]
[/hide]He made a comment for those who wanna become a mangaka;
"I still remember that Yoshihiro Togashi-sensei gave me a monthly manga award 24 years ago. And Toagshi-sensei kindly remembers it as well.
I mean, let's build a similar relationship with me! Let me be proud of you, like "I gave an award to this mangaka!" when you become a mangaka in the future.
I'll see through your manga talent. Feel free to send me your manga!"
By the way, what surprised me is that Oda made a comment about Togashi. Perhaps this is the first time Oda mentioned him publicly.
On the other hand, Togashi mentioned Marineford War arc in an interview last year.About Togashi, many manga editors consider him being the most talented mangaka when it comes to creating great storyboards ("ネーム" source: Hetappi Manga Kenkyujo R (2011)).
I hope Oda and Togashi will have an interview some day. -

Sandman, Name of Tv Show "JumPolice" not "Jump Police"!.
Also write:"J.U.M.Police" and "J.U.M.P"
Jumpolice Mean: Jump Undercover Mission Police.
I think there is a difference

Pretty sure that was for April Fools.
Although none of these seem that farfetched tbh, we know that the Shanks' one is plausible cause we saw someone from his crew getting married in a cover story, and whoever that was probably quit piracy.
We know the Sanji-Pudding marriage's gonna have some surprises, and the 70% and the Wano manuscript part also seem to be somewhat accurate.
So yeah, either they decided to make an illusion of hype by stating the obvious, or they just couldn't think of anything better. -
Actually, saying the story is 70% over may be accurate. There are two major story lines currently in play. Big Mom wedding and Wano Country. These two stories involve two Yonkos. If both stories were to culminate in the defeat/victory over these two Yonko, there would only be two left. Shanks who will be challenged, but doesn't have to be beaten, and Black beard who seems to have been set up as the main antagonist of the end of the story. Assuming that the Strawhats surpass those two hurdles, then they will have likely found all of the neccessary pieces to find Raftel and secure the One Piece. That pretty much ends the story.
Yes you can point out the Revolutionary and Marine story lines that need to be addressed, but truthfully they do not have to be directly affected by the strawhats. Seems like the Revolutionary/Blackbeard fight might mean that the Revolutionary story line could come to an end.
-
Another major player making a move and an upcoming war could hint to Dragon making his move during the Reverie.
-
I really hope someone sandman can confirm if it is fake or not. I mean it is too indirect for an april fool joke and the last part is confirmed true. I actually planning on making a theory and use it as a reference if it is true.
-
I don't really see why it has to be fake. All of this stuff is pretty obvious and hinted at besides maybe the "other major character making a big play" part, but even that sounds pretty generic and simple enough to happen.
-

It's fake. At least, they were not mentioned in the TV show. The last part is only true, but it was confirmed in the latest Jump, not in the TV show.
-
I'm guessing it's like a talk show, which is great!
-
Nozawa is Mother Carmel! xD

It's revealed that Oda shows his setting notebooks about ONE PIECE characters to anime staffs since there are many characters in Whole Cake Island arc despite some of them appearing only in a few panels in manga.

New Jump scan with a new Oda's manuscript page with more information about this Manga Award.
-
Thanks, sandman.
I counted 35 named characters residents of Whole Cake Island, and 40 or more yet to be named so far.
I wonder if he already has names for all of them and how he would reveal them, since there's no time to introduce each one of them at this point. -
Was Oda interviewed in Playboy?

New Jump scan with a new Oda's manuscript page with more information about this Manga Award.
I'd love a translation for the info around the manuscript page there. The boxes inside the image seem to be guidelines for where the image will be cropped to for printing. There was an… interesting discussion on how much of Oda's art is lost in the cropping and whether or not it's a good/worthwhile thing in the Viz Media Thread a little while back. If this is actual info on how the cropping/pagesetting is done, I'm very curious.

I think Oda already has the names for them since it was revealed that many of Whitebeard's subordinates had names in "ONE PIECE Green".[hide]Around 40 subordinates' names were revealed.
[/hide]@Zephray:Was Oda interviewed in Playboy?
It's not American Playboy magazine but a Japanese magazine published by Shueisha.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Weekly_PlayboyBy the way, it seems no one has posted the summary of "Playboy" interview yet, so I'll try translating important parts in the future.

Yeah. As you can see, the wine bottle on the right of Sanji is lost in the volume.[hide]
[/hide]Here is my rough translation of the text of the pic.A. Standard Line (基準線 Kijun-Sen)
Basically you need to draw your manga including characters' words inside this line. However, there is another drawing technique called "Cut-off" (Tachikiri 断ち切り) to make impressive scenes. Sanji's first introduction scene was drawn via "Cut Off" technique.
B. Cut-off Line (断ち切り線 Tachikiri-Sen)
Your manuscripts are cut off on this line. Only drawings inside this cut-off line are printed in a magazine.
If you want your audience to see your character's important face or words, you have to draw inside this line.C. Outer Frame Line (外枠線 Sotowaku-Sen)
When you draw in "Cut-off" technique, it is recommended to draw up to this line in case a printing factory makes a mistake in the process of cutting off your manuscripts to make a magazine. -
Here the comparison between the manuscript and printed version (shonen jump)

Greg kindly posted an interesting info which explains about Corazon's final smile in chapter 766. Here is my translation of the text.
Editor Sugita discussed with Oda whether they should change this Corazon's unique smile into more normal one when Oda created the storyboard.
After the discussion, Oda decided to go with this smile.
Sugita says "This smile is impressive for me since it fits into his clumsy-but-lovable personality".source: Greg's Twitter
@Scotch Thanks for the info. The title of the magazine is "早稲田学報" (Waseda University Gazette). Editor Sugita was interviewed since he graduated from Waseda University.
-
I think it was the right call to go with this smile, I loved it. It does fit Corazon perfectly.
-
Minoru Suzuki, Japanese pro-wrestler, mentioned Oda several times during his internet radio program today. Here is my summary
-
Oda sent a message to Suzuki, "I'm listening to your radio program now." Suzuki calls Oda "Ei-chan".
-
Toshio Asakuma, animal figure artist, revealed that he is now planning to create a character figure of Oda himself.
Here are some OP figures he has created.[hide]
[/hide]- Asakuma recently created a character figure of Suzuki. Suzuki recalls Oda seemed like envious of him.[hide]
[/hide]- Oda, Jinbe's VA and Straw Hats' VAs are already good friends and they sometimes visit pro-wrestling game venue together where Suzuki fights.- Animals in this color spread are based on Asakuma's idea, not Oda's except Usopp and Robin.
- Asakuma plans to create Fujitora's character figure based on a strong brown tabby cat.
- For anyone interested, here is the link to the radio program I recorded (audio: Japanese).
Personally I felt Asakuma's speech style is similar to Oda.
Asakuma's interview

I wished Oda asked if Suzuki's, um….."unique" haircut was based off the patterns of a Devil Fruit.

Can't wait for the Fujitora's figure

Team ONE PIECE held a futsal game in Golden Week (about 2 weeks ago) to improve their health.
Oda joined it with a uniform given from Shinji Kagawa last year. Editor Sugita says Oda was proudly showing the uniform to the participants.*This guy is Oda himself.

Today I saw Oda's interview about consistency in shonen manga being brought up on reddit.
This interview is from Studio Ghibli magazine ("熱風") in July, 2014. I have this magazine, but the full version is about 10 times longer than this summary.
Oda talked about Hayao Miyazaki a lot in the full version.Thank you for letting me know about this thread, Tarek!Translation from skerllyfc on reddit:
Oda says that when he was a kid reading Shonen Jump, most of the stories tended to be inconsistent. He liked Kinnikuman around that time.
During that period of Jump, they'd introduce a new character(s) in a big fashion one week and the next week, those characters would quietly be phased out.Mangaka prioritized writing a fun and interesting story above all else and thus consistency took a backseat.
Kids also didn't really care about just issues and would read it regardless so when Oda decided to become a mangaka, he decided he would make everything consistent.
The past and future and all characters would be connected and wouldn't be phased out like in the past. One Piece represents this objective. However, currently he says that people have become rather nagging about manga. They will look through the various inconsistencies or contradictions with a more fine tooth comb.
He said that in the past Shonen Jump was read almost exclusively by kids but now adult also read jump so that may be one of the reasons for this "new" nagging.
Now, Mangaka, in order to satisfy these older readers, have to make sure everything is correct and doesn't become inconsistent.Oda himself feels slightly responsible for this. However, when creating a story, making sure everything is connected or all the events have been properly foreshadowed of hinted; "rules" like these do not exist.
He says that, as a challenge, he created a story where everything is consistent but normally you can freely create stories without having to do all of these.
Stories like "the nutcracker and the mouse king", which were created to entertain people are born through this "free" writing.source:

Why? Did that guy accuse Oda of making things up as he went along?
