@Johnny:
It's odd how no one has ever commented, in-story, about Zoro losing his eye.
Does it matter? Luffy has a big X-scar in his torso and no one really talks about it either.

Russians are big competitions, but I'm pretty sure I read that koreans have them beat. Vomit and people passed out on the street is a common sight.
Yep, people getting hammered, no matter what day, is pretty common. It is pretty much required that you go to drinking party after work, refusing is seen as rude and can seriously endanger your career, or even your position.
This summarizes it well https://www.aljazeera.com/features/2016/2/7/the-country-with-the-worlds-worst-drink-problem

Which comes with the irony that Korea has a huge prejudice against other drugs like weed. If a public person is known to have smoked, their career will likely end.
Here is my summary of the interview between Oda and Watsuki in “Rurouni Kenshin Exhibition official artbook” published last week.
Other than this summary, they talked about manga technique about how to make good drawings.
Shortly after OP started (1997-2000), Oda told Watsuki that Zoro would become a one-eyed character in the future.
After hearing about it, Watsuki gave up his idea to create a one-eyed protagonist in Gun Blaze West that was supposed to be serialized soon.
Actually he wanted to avoid the situation that some audience may consider Oda stole Watuski’s idea.
Watsuki says he’d like to know why Zoro has become one-eyed, but Oda doesn’t answer this question…
Watsuki asks Oda about the rumor that OP will end in 5 years. Oda replies that someone over 40 years old shouldn’t draw weekly serialization manga.
It’s well known that Oda planned to finish OP in 5 years before serialization, but according to Watsuki, Oda told him before starting OP that he would finish it in 10 years…
When Watsuki met Oda (19-20 years old) for the first time, he felt Oda looked younger than his age, so he was worried if Oda could do a decent job as an assistant.
But soon Watsuki realized there was nothing to worry.
Like the assistants (ex. Takehiko Inoue/Haruto Umezawa) in City Hunter studio, many assistants in Watsuki’s studio have succeeded as mangaka now.
This is thanks to editor Hisashi Sasaki (now working in VIz)’s plan that if he put promising young assistants together into one studio, they would compete with each other and grow up.
Oda and other assistants didn’t complain when Watsuki scolded about their work because all of them trusted his personality.
Oda enjoyed reading Kenshin’s fight against Garden-Keepers. He started working as Watsuki’s assistant around the time when Hajime Saito appeared. Oda worked under Watsuki for 4 months.
Oda re-read Rurouni Kenshin before this interview, but he closed the volume with embarrassment when he saw a female character he drew as an assistant.
The character looked so Oda-ish that she stood out too much in the crowd. Watsuki describes she looks like Nami wearing Kimono rather than Rurouni Kenshin character.lol
This is because Oda had a strong belief that his drawings should be much different from other mangakas even when he worked as an assistant.
Oda didn’t want his drawing influenced by other mangaka because otherwise his drawing originality would gradually fade away.
A hotel called “Oda-ya” appeared In Rurouni Kenshin chapter, but it was an idea from another assistant, not from Oda himself. lol
Watsuki drew Straw Hats’ jolly roger in chapter 161 to celebrate OP serialization.
[hide]
[/hide]Oda is glad that Watsuki calls him “genius” in this interview. When Watsuki read chapter 1, he was convinced that OP would become the best in popularity survey among Jump readers.
Especially he was impressed at Luffy’s words “I’m going to become the king of the pirates!”.
Watsuki explains that Japanese version of this phrase “Kaizoku Ou ni ore wa naru 海賊王におれはなる” sounds way better than “Ore wa Kaizoku Ou ni naru おれは海賊王になる” due to 7-5 pattern as seen in traditional Japanese poem although sadly this difference is lost in translation.
(TN: Luffy’s VA mentioned this difference before as well.)
When Oda drew chapter 1, he used a copy machine in Watsuki’s studio because Oda didn’t have his own machine yet.
Oda moved from his hometown to Tokyo, near Watsuki’s house since he didn’t know where to live.
Oda is only 5 years younger than Watsuki, and other assistants were around the same age as Oda.
He says it felt like they were all “comrades” including Watsuki rather than the relationship between master and apprentice.
Oda recalls he thought maybe it would be the happiest moment in his entire life.
Oda says Watsuki is similar to Kenshin in that Watsuki went super-serious mode only when drawing manga.
When Watsuki read “Romance Dawn”, prototype of OP, he gave an advice to Oda that Luffy’s behavior should be improved so that audience can feel as if Luffy is acting on his own will.
Oda considers his drawing style of putting so much pressure on his pen is not appropriate for digital-drawing on a tablet.
Digital devices allow us to fix drawings so easily that Oda thinks he can’t help spending too much time on fixing his drawings.
While Watsuki appreciates Rurouni Kenshin exhibition being held, he is kinda embarrassed because he thinks his drawings are not as attractive as professional illustrators.
This is why he has not told much about this event yet.
At the end of the interview, Oda praises, “You have an amazing personality, Watsuki-sensei.
People love Rurouni Kenshin probably because of your seriousness toward your fans.Fans fully understand it, so they love Watsuki-sensei.
Hopefully you will draw manga forever.”

Thank you, sandman.
So Oda made One Piece and the other assistant made Vagabond. I tried it twice, but it was lacking. The other assistant must be super jealous of Oda. Not to mention he made a sports manga, yikes.
None of these number of years matter to me. Only the fact that he doesn't want to do it weekly while over 40 is important. I believe that more than 5 years. Oda has to be like 45-48 iirc.
Oda wasn't disciplined enough to put his style to the side smh. Shitty assistant. He should be embarrassed.
Everyone is impressed by Luffy's words. I don't see the issue in telling his pal about Zoro's eye, unless he wants him to experience it with the rest of the world.
Thanks so much sandman!!!

Inoue was not Watsuki's assistant. He was an assistant in City Hunter Studios.
One other famous Watsuki assistant is Hiroyuki Takei (Shaman King).
Actually lost respect for Oda here.

Oh, ok, got that 1 wrong
Luffy's "Red Roc" was originally called "Gigant Red Hawk" in the rough draft, but Oda decided to upgrade it. Editor Iwasaki confirmed Roc is based on a legendary bird.
source: "Shueisha Weekly Playboy" published today
According to the magazine, Oda said, "If I'm allowed to draw 30 pages each week, I'll soon finish submitting them". Editor said Oda spends much time on deciding how to cram his ideas into 17 pages.
There are about 10 fonts in OP, all of which are specified by editor, not Oda

Does it matter? Luffy has a big X-scar in his torso and no one really talks about it either.
Probably because everyone in the world saw precisely where Luffy got his scar from. (except for the people's of Wano and I presume Zou as well). To the point of asking about Zoro's scar, Luffy and Zoro have a quick chat about where he was whisked off to in chapter 604. I feel like the current fight would be a great time for whatever Luffy learned to be brought up if they end up doing some sort of double maneuver.

Watsuki, the author of Kenshin, was caught and arrested for having at least 100 dvd of child pornography. I don't know how this type of stuff is dealt with in Japanese law but he was let go with having paid fine.
Regardless, it is still super tasteless to see Oda talking to someone like Watsuki with that jolly attitude.

I think its just the fact that theyve known each other for 27 years and looking at Sandmans post you can see theyve got a long relationship and has had some kind of impact on him.
If Oda was the one, I'd lose respect. Or if Oda knew of Watsuki literally engaging in actual sexual misconduct with a minor and didnt do or say anything, for sure.
Long-term relationships are different in Japan, so its not a simple "you did that so, screw our 27 year old frienship". I'll give Oda the benefit of the doubt.

I thought for a sec that Oda had 100 DvD's of child porn. That would have been heartbreaking
He had 100 dvds of child porn. That is NOT something you find on internet willy nilly.
He ACTUALLY bought them and had physical copies of live child rape. Oda has little daughters for fuck sake. If I knew someone like that, regardless of my relationship with them or how many years I had known them, I would've beat the shit outta them and kept them AWAY from me and my family.
I don't know how things like that work in Japan but that is absolutely fucking disgusting and Oda talking to someone WHO admitted to being a pedo and having fantasies about little girls is beyond tasteless. There is a moral line and regardless of country, culture and what not, IT SHOULD NEVER BE CROSSED.
Look up Richard Huckle or Peter Scully if you want to see what stuff like this can eventually lead to. This shit is NOT to be taken lightly in any shape or form.

We have entire nations literally raping minorities. Are you going to beat the shit out of them too? If not, you are just looking for an excuse to shit on someone and feel like some sort of hero for doing this.

…bc he won't beat the shit out of entire nations? You know what, that's so messed up and doesn't line up at all. But keep defending child rape! Disgusting

Genuine question, would knowning that michelangelo or idk, bach were child whatever you call it, not make you appreciate their art anymore?
Is this debate over the morality of tolerating pedophiles and whether or not they deserve to be punched really necessary?
some sort of hero for doing this.
…..Is that a confession?
Just wondering since I have not seen this level of stupidity being brought up when discussing pedo's and child rape.
Do I feel like a hero? Really? Would something like that happen to someone near you before you understand how fucked up pedo scene actually is?
I don't really see the point of this post.
And just to answer; I am a person. I have a moral line/limit. Hurting kids, child sexual exploitations, assaults, etc... is what I consider to be crossing that line.
But from my own position in the world; I wouldn't be able to DO shit on a large scale. All I can do is be careful, observant to my own surrounding and discuss this fucked up issue that otherwise isn't mainstream.
These are some cases that happen relatively close to my area:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Murder_of_Tori_Stafford
Read them. And try to imagine HOW utterly fucked up these situations are.
Or even a case that has nothing to do with where I live but is still heart breaking for anyone that has a beating heart:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Murder_of_Nurin_Jazlin
And yes, there are ALOT more like these or even more fucked up. But there is no "badge" between these individual cases in terms of what is "more" fucked up. Or "more" worthy of being discussed. And each and every single person of went through this shit is FUCKED up and their stories DESERVE to be spread and society itself HAS to do FARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR better.
The distribution of child porn is fucking disturbing. Here is a bit from Peter Scully's wiki page
international child sexual abuse ring that offered pay-per-view video streams of children being tortured and sexually abused on the dark web. Among the victims who had their ordeals recorded and sold over the Internet was an 18-month-old infant who was hung upside down while Scully and two accomplices raped and tortured her
A fucking 18 MONTH OLD INFANT was tortured and raped by at least three people and sold on the internet that COULD still be floating around the dark web. And none of this shit is made up. Peter Scully was arrested and is currently in jail because of that.
Nurin Jazlin was a 8 year old girl that was kidnapped, brutally tortured, and raped over the COURSE of a month. AND THEN WAS DISCARDED IN A GYM BAG LIKE A PIECE OF TRASH. When police found her, she was naked and her private parts were stuffed with cucumber and eggplant.
And while it was never really confirmed, the people who did it seem like it was JUST ANOTHER TUESDAY for them to just do that to a child and then discard her. Which can also potentially lead to distribution of rape-tapes of this little girl.
There is one thing I never fuck around with and that is child pornography, the lack of any real coverage, people thinking its some kind of a joke or not even giving a shit about these acts.
Someone owning 100 dvds of child rape that was filmed by people that give no shits about human life or have any morality is fucking disgusting whichever way you look at it. It's NOT ok. This SHIT SHOULD NOT BE OK.

There is no "morality".
Any parent, relative or any human for that matter would instinctively do it. No one going to debate the right or wrong when a predator is near kids.

Has Oda done anything wrong? I've literally condemned the actions of the other author. I just explained how relationships overseas in Asian countries are different than ones in Western Countries. People don't cut long time friends off.
But good to see you are brainwashed.

I'm no anthropologist but i would wager a rather large sum that there are plenty of reasons that people within an asian social group would cut ties with each other.

Of course. But if we looked at the context of the issue, the friend is 27 year old friend and had an influence on Oda in writing One Piece.
27 years is a very very long time. This is why i give Oda the benefit of the doubt.

I'm from Asia albeit south-east Asia from a country called Pakistan. Basically I'm not Western nor grew up with Western way of thinking.
And I reckon that if me or my family knew anyone like that, regardless of whether we knew him or short time or long time, we would've cut our ties with them and forbid any kids to be near him.
I reckon most people, regardless of cultural background, would do that.
Why Oda didn't do it is completely beyond me and definitely makes me look at him differently.

Are you Asian? Because the Asian people I know about don't really agree.
I also know some people here in the west who refuse to cut ties with awful people. In other words, we shouldn't generalize countries.
This is less a relationship thing and more a "Japan only recently criminalized this, so the culture hasn't developed yet". Things will eventually change, especially as Japan caters more to the West due to their own shrinking markets.

I actually study this and its a major part of my degree. In Japan, people like your mentors, seniors or teachers are treated with utmost respect, completely next level to places outside. It is COMPLETELY different to how relationships work in the west. The entire social structure is based on seniority in Japan for example. This is not a "generalization" it is fact, and someone like me who studies to go to these countries for business MUST understand this and and also that people do not see things the same as you or i would.
People that live outside their country of origin have a broader outlook on the world and morals and views change compared to ones that have never left their country.
But yea the recent criminalization is probably a contributing factor to this. There is also a cultural issue, i mean girls can get married at 16. This seems normal to Japanese yet immoral to us.
Taking your points and my points into consideration. Japan is a underdeveloped in terms of minors and sexual misconduct, combine the fact that Oda has known the guy for 27 years and has been a mentor to him in creating one of the best series (if not the best) of all time, is it really beyond logic to understand why Oda wouldn't view this the same way as we would?
The fact that most of the criticism is from western fans while Japanese are more forgiving should show how different the cultures really are.
Unless I'm mistaken, Oda called him a "mentor" or considers him a mentor because of Oda working as an assistant and learning stuff about drawing manga from Watsuki.
I don't remember any time, article or source where Oda referred to him as a mentor that inspired him to write One Piece.
And yes, it REALLY is beyond logic to think that Oda shouldn't really treat him any differently just because he has known the dude for 27 years. I find that notion to be absolutely disgusting that somehow the longevity overwrites someone crossing a moral line.

What makes it sound a bit off is that tone of borderline feudalism you give it. At some points it almost feels like you are arguing that a 2021 Japanese man is duty bound to protect his feudal lord no matter what perverted or criminal acts he does. It gives what is probably a correct general frame work a fantastical dimension that feels hard to swallow. But on the other hand all of Japans manga elite is closing ranks around this sex criminal so either they are free to have their own moral and just don't care, or are trapped by some cultural norm where pedophiles cannot be condemned if they were born earlier than you. And i don't know which option feels sadder to me
I'm bringing this back into the thread because it needs to be addressed:
If you really lost respect for Oda, you wouldn't be on a Forum that hosts the content of a Pedophile tolerator. That's why no one takes your shit seriously.
Why again were you banned from the lgbt thread who's not taking my shit seriously you weird pedo apologist
Can you stop being a mean person. I have said nothing to make me any kind of apologist. Why do you keep staying on this forum if you really lost respect for Oda? You just look for brownie points. Stop.

You two should probably just set each other to ignore because I don't see this going in a positive direction.

The Warlords extended the story according to Oda and now he's replaced them with the SSG in a sense. Lets see if Oda can fight not letting this group do the same. The Warlords served so many purposes. I would assume making this group more united could be a way to make sure individuals in the group don't take on their own narrative that extends the story.
Each Warlord served different purposes and functioned differently. Boa was a way into Impel Down, Luffy's separation journey, slave/Fisher Tiger formal introduction, etc. That's just 1 example. Being individuals that Oda has to fight the urge to use in so many ways is the test if he really wants to end this quickly.
I believe Vivi's hair was partially a factor in extending her focus. Something as small as that can deter Oda on his path to finishing things quickly. He just can't risk this group getting out of hand like that.
I don't think he had all the Supernova storylines mapped out when he first introduced them. What made Capone worthy of getting great focus in WCI arc or Law for this New World saga? Why couldn't Senor Pink just be a regular joe that got beat up? he had to have such a wholesome backstory.
Oda needs an intervention. He's addicted to treating almost every other character with care.
Oda needs an intervention. He's addicted to treating almost every other character with care.
Hard to imagine a better addition for an author to have. I've seen enough stories that obviously stopped caring by the end to say with confidence that this is absolutely the preferable affliction.
Oda caring enough to give even his tertiary characters memorable and important moments in the story is one of the things I like the most about him as an author, so please no intervention.
While it can definitely bloat the weekly reading experience, taking the time to care about so many supporting cast members and develop every location is what makes the worldbuilding work. There are no islands that are locations in name only, where the heroes walk in to cash a plot coupon and move on, in the way some fantasy series end up doing toward the end. In One Piece, as soon as we arrive at a new place, the bigger picture stuff takes a back seat and that island is the most important place in the world until we leave. Oda forces us to get comfortable with the locals and learn what issues threaten their day to day lives. Maybe we want to speed on to Laugh Tale and see what's there, but the people of Wano just want to see fewer of their kin indentured in slave labour mines, whether that saves the world or not. No matter how ridiculous the scenarios get, that divide between the big stuff and the little stuff is extremely human.
And Oda makes sure he puts people there to care about these local issues. You'd struggle to find anyone without a unique design, a name to be dropped in the SBS, and some kind of personality quirk that influences how they interact with the world around them. And there's a lot of them. No town is ever purely a mob of faceless NPCs, there are always community leaders and recognisable prominent figures. No pirate crew just is a captain and an army of fodder, there's always at least one or two distinct lieutenants in even the most throwaway group. And while some of these cast members are shallow one-scene wonders, you can never be quire sure who's going to reveal a tragic backstory or a fragment of knowledge about something that actually is world-shaking.
One Piece's world feels populated in a way few other worldbuilding-driven series can manage. It feels like the world extends beyond the view of the camera, and keeps on ticking when both Luffy and we, the audience, aren't looking at it. It achieves this because Oda takes the time to fill every empty space with a distinct person who has their own way of giving a shit about the space they live in.
So yeah, despite the mostly pacing-based issues it can create, Oda's caring is the heart and soul of the series. It may not have taken 20 years without it, it certainly wouldn't have lasted 20 years if it was any other way.
Wow, Captain M, sometimes I wish there was a simple Like-Button or something to easily declare your appreciation of a really great post. That was beautifully stated and absolutely true. Oda caring this much about all of his characters is what makes the whole series work so well.
It doesn't really matter though.
