I suspect that for many entities currently, but can be wrong and they were mostly in his plot notebooks. It does feel like Morgans was planned a while ago tho. The person who is in charge of the News Coo doesn't seem like an on the fly. The Underworld in general doesn't seem like it stems from impulsive creativity.

What is funny is that when I bring up the Research team or Underworld leaders, most seem like they don't care because none of them seem big and powerful. I find it interesting because information, funds and resources in general have been shown to be crucial in the OP world. These individuals, along with others not shown, are considered big shots in that field. Also, the fact that some were noted by Jinbei as big deals to be mindful of

He definitely creates some stuff up on the spot, especially with a series running this long, and the things he likes he continues to expand on, I think I remember reading that same interview you mentioned about law, who I honestly love (I know a lot of people on the fourm aren't of the same opinion

and one thing Doflamingo's down fall showed us, is that Brute strength isn't the only type of power that can change the world, his criminal operations and then lack thereof upon his defeat completely changed the balance of power, so yeah I'm very interested, like you, to see who else these mysterious puppeteers are, power levels be damned

I have been thinking for couple of years now, maybe since Zou~WCI, i wish that maybe for future arc after Wano will not based on 1 island at a time anymore.
Maybe its time to focus on multiple event on multiple places with multiple factions/groups.
To focus more on developing and finally concluding all those lingering plotlines and setup for final arc/saga.
And some long awaited islands and places fans had been waiting for, they will still get them but not as focus point like what happen for all this time.

But whatever Odas choose to do, i know i'll be enjoying it. It just I feel tired of reading some fans complaning that they don't get their favorite characters story/actions/fighting etc or they don't care about all those tons of new characters that Oda's introducing, don't care about most if not all new plotlines whatever. Some fans just want their favorites on action and they had been waiting for a very long time.

No idea where this need for development of the crew comes from, definitely not from any inclination in the manga where the Strawhats are constantly put back for other characters to shine or get focus on.
"Sanji´s arc" does not change much on that really, though i suppose many see it as sign that this might extent to other Strawhats, but honestly, it´s not a logical conclusion. It is more likely that Oda might have seen signs of Sanji fan backlash (fan mail and such, he is the 3rd most liked character after all) and hence talked about Sanji´s arc to appease them, which at the same time still was a catalyst and sufficient reason to visit the island that was foreshadowed 150 chapters before.
Nevertheless, with Sanji it kind of made sense to learn how a young boy ended up on the ship and where his love for cooking and All Blue came from.
For Zoro it would make sense to learn why he was dojo hunting.
Nami was a baby when she was found, you could add the info where she comes from, would not be essential for her character though.
Usopp lived on his island and then joined.
Same for Chopper.
Robin´s life is clear, you could show all the hideous people who betrayed her, not necessary though.
You could show Franky´s dad, that might actually happen at one point.
Brook´s life as a kingdom soldier could be shown before becoming a pirate, once again not really essential for his character, since his connection to Laboon and his pirate crew and 50 years in solitude have shaped his character.
Jinbe needs a personal flashback.

And then the dreams, most if not all of them will get accomplished at the end when either getting to Raftel or uniting the world.
Zoro´s dream is a bit shaky, technically he could do that any time he become strong enough, but he will only get strong enough in the end.
Nami´s technically will not get accomplished until they sail all the world, but Oda is probably going to pretend sailing the Grand Line completely is good enough.
Franky is the same, his dream gets accomplished when they reach Raftel.
Usopp´s can happen at any time, i think most agree it will happen on Elbaf.
Brook is after reaching Raftel, maybe even by uniting the blues again, which also intertwines with All Blue dream of Sanji.
Robin´s dream is accomplished on Raftel.
Jinbe´s dream, assuming it is really all about the fishmen race, gets accomplished by defeating the WG.
Which pretty much only leaves Chopper in need of personal focus on his dream and the cure for all diseases. Can easily also be accomplished at Raftel, can also happen after everything is over and Luffy is actually sick, nevertheless, not a justification for a completely separate, Chopper heavy arc.

In principle, I don't mind added development and paneltime for the crewmembers at all. In fact, quite the contrary.

But the thing about Sanjis second round in the spotlight is that a) none of the questions it answers had been positioned as needed answering (in contrast to Namis mention of Bellemere as she sails off from baratie, or Robins declaration that her dream has too many enemies in Alabasta), b) a lot of the added detail feels weird when applied to Sanjis character in retrospect, and c) Sanji is the exact same character as before, with the exact same dream, the exact same morals, and the exact same personality. The most he got out of it was a severe drop in integrity, courtesy of the Raid Suit debacle.
Other Straw hats might fare better, especially underserved latecomers like Brook, but its not exactly a stellar precence to set.

Well in Sanji´s case, you never really learned where the obsession with All Blue comes from, nor what a young boy is doing working an adult profession. I mean of course you can link the latter to the general harsh life of the One Piece world, but in contrast to the rest, with whom you get a clear root of their dream, Sanji´s mentor simply reinforced his already existing dream, but never represented the catalyst for him to develop said dream.

For every Strawhat, i at least think it is different, can´t quite recall whether Nami´s talent and love for navigation had anything to do with Bellemere.

But yeah, ultimately, i doubt anyone felt that Sanji´s background was incomplete.

Sanji's background was not strictly necessary indeed, but that doesn't mean there weren't some interesting questions around his main personality traits, which is not true for most Strawhats, dare I say.

Even if WCI didn't ultimately change Sanji, it did give some depth to why he follows some of his hardcore principles. For example, to explain why he doesn't hit a woman you could now say: for being rejected by his blood family at such young age, there is a deeper layer of identity for honoring the teachings of the man that accepted him as his adopted son. Fact is that nowadays you have a much clear picture of Sanji's character, actions and decisions, not merely additional background.

Basically repeating what I said. Before Zou, most didn't think there would be a Sanji arc, but we got 1 anyway. Shows the direction that Oda might be going in with some or possibly all of the characters. The cook over being the warrior as his pops sees it. I see that this might be a similar approach for Zoro in Wano. To cut nothing and duty as the vice captain mixed in with so many other plot points. If it was just Zoro or Luffy, it wouldn't be a discussion really. I can see more with Franky and Brook, just off that. Whether the audience wants to see it or not. It has been open to speculation by this pattern

Which is the issue, nobody saw it as necessary, nobody expected it, yet Oda literally addressed it as something people have been complaining about, namely not seeing Sanji for so long as the 3rd favorite character, and Oda pretty much revealed it would be the year of Sanji and he would get additional focus.
How much of that was planned (i mean the North Blue and Mr Prince stuff can both be meticulous foreshadowing or fortunate details that lead to more) or not is up for discussion, ultimately it does not matter since it served its purpose as being the catalyst for WCI while addressing one of the few things that was left open in any Strawhat backgrounds, i addressed that above.

In the same time frame, we did not see Chopper, Nami and Brook, apparently nobody cared about that.

I never seen complaints for Sanji not getting his backstory fleshed out or even progression and just off that, i'm skeptical enough to question if Oda seen it himself. I can't remember a comment from Oda where he addresses that in particular. Been reading it for almost 10 years now, so maybe someone else has the quote and I missed it.

Also, what would happen if Sanji didn't get this treatment? I wouldn't even think twice about it. Point is, it's better to go off a pattern in the manga than what the audience want. He's telling the story. I've never read a story that addressed what every fan wanted.

You're proving my point that Oda is impulsive to a certain extent and can either have something waiting to take on or impulsively decide "this would make things more interesting". With that and the fact that Sanji got backstory and progression, I can't dismiss many of the major things that have been hinted if something, like what Sanji got in WCI arc, happened.

With the idea that the Gorosei and Im having the Royals under the lie that everyone is equal and no one sits on the throne, plus Vivi, Rebecca, etc interacting, I speculate that there will be a sector of Royals that are against the WG in the future and can ally themselves with the SH crew. SH crew do have a Rev Army vibe to them. So, Germa, Wano, Elbaf and some other non affiliated WG countries can play a part in that. It can possibly become a trend for certain countries like Alabasta and Drum Kingdom to disconnect from the WG in some capacity. It would compliment how Luffy and the others have been "fixing" the Warlord problem indirectly. He saved their countries and helped them become less reliant and connected to the WG.

Buuuut, in theory of course. That is how I see Germa's role being played out. Along with there being more to Judge's remarks to Linlin about putting faith in their partnership, in hopes of returning to that land. I think he said 66 days and 300 years. Maybe there's more to his immoral campaign to retain the North Blue and the SH crew can be what BM's organization couldn't

I can see the remaining arcs being indicative of Oda trying to flesh out his main cast more like he is with the supernova each passing arc.

Luffy- No need he gets focus every arc.
Sanji- WCI
Zoro- Wano, its obvious enough
Usopp- Elbaf most definitely

The rest are hard stretches or guesses, but if I had to assume based on my conjecture with future arcs:

Franky- Vegapunk, considering his history with Vegapunk's birthplace and technology it would fit.

Robin- Raftel most definitely. Her telling the true history and spilling all the beans about the WG will complete her Ohara arc.

Jinbe- Fishman Islands destruction, which may just coincide with his dream anyway.

Chopper- This one im not sure about. Possibly Luffy getting sick like Roger and his composure as a doctor to save him? More an overarching plot

Nami- tbh i have no idea.

Brook- Same thing

That was out of the window the second everyone important in OP was related to luffy. The problem with vinsmokes is not introduce or tease them more before chapter 800 or when they got first revealed. Like give sanji some inferior raid suit since pre ts if you just plan to turn him into power rangers and give up on his unique leg fgihter cook style anyway.
And vinsmokes are rather important but not on par with luffy's relatives. Like they are some warmongers family we never heard about until recently that want north blue. And they don't influence the big plot of op beyond them wanting to ally with yonkou family. Like judge is some 3rd scientist in the world after CC and vegapunk thing, not really yonkou or hero of marines, son of pirate king, vice pirate king, second man in revolutionaries, or most wanted man or anything like that.

At this point they just look like excuse to give sanji power up. Like zoro revealed to be from some swordmen family and they give him new sword.

First thing comes to mind is Nami being fleshed out on their way to Raftel navigational-wise as well as geographer-wise on the issue what Grand and Red Line are, how World government is connected to them and the four blues. Probably not like “they shaped them” but I still think there is more to the geomorphology of the OP-world. Maybe she will draw/decipher an ancient map. Maybe it’s not only about a map, but she will have to come up with a new cosmological understanding. I yet don’t see her having an own mini-arc though, more like getting time to shine and show more of her character on their way in general.

As of Brook I have always wondered how we didn’t meet anyone important he knew in his prime (Laboon aside of course). We know in general next to nothing of the pirates before Rogers era. Seems like we will get this with Kaido/LinLin/Rox flashback though. And maybe Rumba Pirates were just not important enough or are simply too old.

Devy Back Fight seems like the perfect solution for RHs vs SHs. This way then can have a friendly fight and focus not solely on fighting itself, but utilizing other strenghts.

This comes up a lot. If a character isn't all powerful or directly connected to a Yonko, WG or Luffy, they might seem irrelevant to some.

So, the Vinsmokes being

• formerly allied with WG
• connections to Underworld
• technologically advanced
• history with North Blue

have no purpose to you outside of giving Sanji the Raid Suit? The Research Team can have no possible insight on the Void Century? Being a WG affiliated Royal or not isn't a topic at hand? The Underworld isn't heavily hinted as complimenting the Pirate World? Judge's remarks about 300 years worth of resentful spirits? There was never any ranking stated or confirmed between Caesar, VP and Judge. Some even say that Caesar was on that Research team and outside of Caesar being familiar with Judge and VP, nothing confirms that. I remember there was a misunderstanding of the Vivre Card, so many took it as him being confirmed as part of the team.

I feel that being WG affiliated Royals served as what they are capable of. They were able to make the, 1st to our knowledge, alive only bounty. They dabble in the Underworld while being WG affiliated and we come to understand that the WG isn't incapable of associating itself with others in that same capacity. We see how even Yonko, with all their power and influence, can value a Kingdom and science. We see that Judge has a purpose that isn't fully explained yet and can expound (not justify) his methods. He was part of the team that made findings on the Lineage Factor. That is a major plot point that can be connected to the origins of DF.

I think there are 2 CORE and 1 pretty important set of plotlines we have to get before Luffy and Crew reach The Final Island. I personally think we need more to solidify Jinbe and possibly another crew member's place in the crew. The longevity of the voyage helps with that.

• Elbaf: The most obvious one. Has been teased for 800 chapters at this point. I think this arc is going to do much more than just Giants or end Big Mom's story (if Wano isnt the definitive end to her story arc). I think a lot of people have this idea that the great tree in the center of the island is Yggdrasil, and there is this slight feeling, that due to being so large, it reaches to other sky islands. I firmly believe this will feature Urogue, Enel's return, possibly moon related concepts (I think Minks in Wano are going to talk a little about this). I think alot of these arcs involve Oda trying to put as much as he can in the end. This will be dressrosa-esque in that it will cover much more than just giants or Loki.

• Vegapunk: The other very obvious choice. Vegapunk has been thes center in a TON of things even post-timeskip, without Kuma. Giantification, Caesar, Judge, the lineage factor, Orochi wanting Vegapunk, the shichibukai replacements. We are BOUND for a Vegapunk centric arc. On top of this you have the Kuma centric/Bonney/Revolutionary plotlines. Hell, it may even involve CP-0. There is a ton we dont know about devil fruits, the plots for CC and Judge are not finished. And much more. This arc, imo, is just as necessary as Elbaf. Smoker and Tashigi have been notably absent, and Ryokugyu has yet to be shown. This may be the perfect time for it all.

• Underworld: This one is more of a stretch on my part ill give it that. Ill consider this more of a plotline rather than a concetrated arc. However, there are a myriad of OP plotlines that need tying up before the end. One especially is the Underworld. Oda introduced 6 Emperors (not sure if its everyone) and only really touched on 2 of them, the other 4 (well, 1 was meh anyway) are completely egnimatic. We also have the concept that Doflamingo has a replacement that Jack needs to find. They've been central to every arc so far, in a very odd way. Another one of those pounts is Pluton's actual location. I believe one of these people knows where it is. It will be a central plot point. We didnt get those bits of info in Alabasta and Water 7 for nothing. Uranus is likely something fantasitcal, like an item per say (perhaps it will be found at Elbaf), but Pluton is a large warship. The information of its location is invaluable, and the WG clearly does not have it because of what we know about W7. I think Crocodile will be centric to this arc because of his desire to claim it beforehand. Other than this, silver medalist Impel Down escapees are also roaming about. I can see them being here, wherever this location is.

I do think the ancient weapons are fundamental to ending the series, hence why I think that last arc needs to happen or Elbaf may be central to it.

Other than this, I am unsure where plot points like Marco/Weevil fall, or Moria (if not in Wano). Shanks and BB will probably be central to everything., but I do think the above needs to happen in concetrated arcs, imo.

I could see Teach killing Shanks at the climax of Elbaf to set things in motion. With Big Mom and Luffy around too, it would be a good way to see where the emperors stand with each other for the finale. I don't expect moon stuff there at all. I think that's gonna be even further into the endgame.

Maybe not 5 years,but i can see the manga ending in 7-8 years. Wano will be very long,at least another 2 years,but there wont be so much left after it. We will probably go straight to the final arc of the series (which will be very long as well and will include Elbaf,and maybe the Moon),so 2 more years to complete Wano and 5 years for this big final arc makes 7 years.

I always took the Kuma thing as confirmed since his role is pretty clear, test and assess the Strawhats on Thriller Bark, save them and give them opportunity to grow in Shabondy.

So he bet on Luffy and co to bring the new era, similar to Shanks.

And the 5 years thing, i hope nobody takes that seriously.

Here is my summary of the interview. Oda said he’d like to finish OP in 5 years. He kindly gave 7 autographs to each of the Youtubers. :wub:

Oda wanting to finish OP in 5 times means nothing regarding how long it will actually take. Even when he seemed a lot more certain (like "Wano is going to start this year") he still failed miserably to predict how long it takes him to advance, and this time it sounds more like wishfully thinking than actual predicting.

Still, the fact he would like to do so probably hints he is trying to do so and that alone means a lot regardless. In face of how long big arcs take in OP, it should be impossible for anyone to think possible to end it in 5 years, so if Oda thinks it could be done… well, let's say all the offscreening we are seeing in Wano will probably become the new standard.

Honestly going to strong guess and say it will still take him ~10 years to finish. Once he realizes how much he has to tie up (he probably focuses on the now and doesn't leave himself time to daydream about his own story), it will keep extending.

I still personally think we have ~2 more years of Wano, followed by Vegapunk and Elbaf arcs (which may take a year or 2 each), perhaps another one, then Raftel and the Final War (which will probably be OPs largest arc by far).

Its important we remember that authors of big stories like this often have trouble finishing them on time. Look at friggin JRRM and ASOIAF. Guaranteed he's going to do an 8th book after releasing the 6th and 7th lol. We are lucky Oda is still young and can do this for another decade.

If he enjoys his work, it will continue as long as it needs.

I'm not sure why people think this. Orochi's comment with CP-0 was just to show how insane he was with his demands. I highly doubt Vegapunk goes anywhere near Wano.

The fact that Smoker and Tashigi were missing during the Reverie proves to me that he's saving them for a further arc.

I never take the "finish by or completion status" comments seriously. I usually am on the hunt for what can extend the series or checking off things that progress big picture plot points. Anything that is left unresolved or isn't directly related or reliant on the immediate affair is looked at as a clue into what is in store. The placement of similar ideas are questioned. We had Shanks and the Gorosei going into a discussion about a certain pirate. I automatically question why this seems similar to when Shanks was warning WB to call off Ace. In that same chapter, we get Kaido and Linlin's discussion and Garp providing a glimpse into what Rox can do if even some of them got together. Even when Luffy was getting cheeky with BM. It reminded me of his 1st interaction with WB. The predicament is way different, but I still believe there's something there.

Yeah, I know Oda has a terrible track record with it, but it isn't THAT terrible. I don't think it'll end up being 10 years if he's trying to end it in 5 (this late in the game). I expect something like 6-8 years.

He is still the most likely one to know how much the manga will still last. If he said 5 years, then maybe he only plans to make 5 more arcs, 5 years =5 arcs.
But some of arcs could get longer from 1 year to 2 years so yeah, 7 years or more could be.

The 5 years thing has me extremely worried. I know he said "i would like to" (as in "i wish i could") but that mentality by itself gives me the impression that he might compromise with rushing or skipping some plots/arcs to get to the final arc faster. I'm even wondering if Elbaf will be a major arc anymore.

I never expected Elbaf to be a final war type of arc like Wano but i thought it would be it's own self-contained adventure story like Skypiea. I think bare minimum 60 chapters (plus set-up chapters beforehand)
