      I've been wondering something… does Oda-sensei ever show any kind of pattern in the uniforms of Navy officers of a specific rank?

      I know that Commissioned Officers seem to all wear the "Justice" jacket, and NCOs have baseball caps in addition to standard "sailor" uniforms (Tashigi being a major exception, though she's more-or-less Smoker's protégé, so maybe she doesn't count). Are there any other visual cues on uniforms that help identify members of the Navy as being a particular rank, or is it all just guesswork?

        Er…...its Marines, not navy.

        But anyway....

        Thats a hard question to answer, but higher level marines have capes....

          @Zephos:

          It's Kaigun, which means Navy. The structure of the force approximates that of Naval forces during the Age of Sail in Europe. I think "marines" is a perfectly fine word to use when describing those in the Navy who do the actual fighting, but the organization as a whole is not a marine corps.

          And anyway, you just said back to me what I already stated: commissioned officers seem to have the perk of those nifty "justice" jackets, while NCOs get stuck with dorky sailor duds and a baseball cap. Is there anything else in the series that can be used to determine rank?

              All I know is that the higher ups wear those nifty coats that everyone else does.

              You know… that ones that rest only on their shoulders... they don't bother putting their arms through the sleeves.

                I don't think there's any fit rule. Of all we've seen up to now, it'd be logical to assume that higher up officials can get to wear whatever they want, while lower-ranked marines (Private recruits) have a standard uniform. However, this theory is demolished by Jango and Fullbody alone, who are both private recruits yet wear whatever they want. Except the cap.

                THE CAP IS THE CLUE.

                  😧 A question for Oda-sensei. In the Marines, there are some people who wear uniforms and some people who wear normal clothes. Is theright to wear regular clothes something that is decided by rank, or is it all up to personal preference?
                  O: Well. If it's preference, it's preference. If it's decided, it's decided. First of all… When you become a sailor, you are giventhe basic Marine uniform and cap (as shown). This is a very joyous occasion where you usually call home to tell your parents.Everyone Private First Class [Ittouhei] and below wears these. Jango and Fullbody are exceptions. When you become Corporal [Gochou] and above, you can choose from a number of uniforms. Also, personal clothes are allowed. However, if you want to appear sailor-like, you must exert some self-control. When you get to Warrant Officer [Juni], you are allowed to wear the word "Justice". For the Major [Shousa] class and up, the Justice coat and suit is preferred attire. (For more info regarding Marine ranks, consult volume 8.)

                  … Volume 24, page 26, SBS. Hope that helps. =D
