So I knew about this game coming out but I didn't really think much of it. LotR games are typically average at best and usually not even that good. But apparently this one is really good and several of my friends have told me it's easily the best original new generation console game to hit shelves so far? Who knew? Not an intimidating list of competition I realize. I've heard the gameplay get compared to the Batman games a lot.

I might pick it up this weekend. I need something to tide me over until Inquisition comes out, or the next six weeks could wind up being pretty dreary. I like the idea that any orc that manages to kill you gets more powerful and advances within their ranks.

Been thinking the game might be some fun but I don't particularly like the combat the Batman games have and I've heard this is essentially the exact same thing. Might try it out at some point though.

Bought it due to the strong reviews despite not liking LotR at all. I just randomly clicked a Twitch stream (not even planning to watch) and got slapped with the ending tho. Christ.

Well all the reviews are praising their random orc generator and batman combat. But it's essentially just a small camp area you can invade copy and pasted over the entire map a la assassin's creed. The game absolutely butchers any of the book's lore though and it's own story isn't anything more than a paper thin revenge plot. Then again, not that many would care about the lore anyways. So I guess assassin's creed's repetitive missions, just combat replaced with batman's and the missions have a randomly generated orc instead. Not a bad game by any means, but I doubt you'll miss much by skipping it.

To be honest, I'm skipping this purely on how sick I am of the devs saying over and over that they are "faithful to the lore" when the whole premise of the story just butchers it: "undead ressurrected ranger possessed by a long dead elf and can mind control orcs". Even if the gameplay is decent, it's still a game that should never have existed, like that LotR DotA game.

EDIT: To be honest, this game could have not been a LotR game at all, and would have lost nothing.

It's fun from the little bit I played at my friend. The nemesis system is a really cool and you could do other games based around it.
I think the combat can get pretty tiring though, because you can get really swarmed with enemies making battles quite long and pretty challenging.
Can't speak too much about the main mission but the side mission variety is somewhat mediocre?

I would probably get it myself if I didn't have Wasteland 2 already.

God I suck so bad at playing with a keyboard lol. It's been waaaay too long since the last time I extensively used one for games.

But despite that it's really fun to play the game. The Nemesis system makes for interesting battles virtually all the time and due to that you always have some opponents to hunt down/always something that keeps you going. Somehow though I always end up fighting against 6-7 orcs when I'm just trying to kill one of those bastards. '-' Ironically it's a stealthy archer most of the time who puts an end to my war-mongering character.

While stealth is still an option, you now have the chance to conquer regions with your own army now.

I still hold the nemesis system in high regards as a really cool system that can create dynamic stories. I'm less enthusiastic that this fantastic system is stuck with doing fan fiction LotR stuff…..To the point where I would honestly enjoy the very same game they're presenting way more if it was just reskinned to be something else, preferably something original with its own style.
Still dreaming about a Fire Emblem style game that would employ such a system.
