      Summary:

_"The series takes place in the near future, when it is possible to instantaneously measure and quantify a person's state of mind and personality. This information is recorded and processed, and the term 'Psycho-Pass' refers to a standard used to measure an individual's being. The story centers around the 'enforcement officer' Shinya Kougami, who is tasked with managing crime in such a world.

In the future, it is possible to quantitatively measure a person's emotions, desires, and every inclination. In this way, it is also possible to measure a person's criminal tendency factor, which is used to judge criminals.

This is the story of a team of policemen dedicated to maintaining public order. Some of them work in the Enforcement Division, responsible for the apprehension of criminals, while others belong to the Supervisory Division which oversees their colleagues in Enforcement. "_

Whenever Netflix adds a new and intriguing anime, I usually marathon it as fast as humanly possible.
This series was one that I was very pleased with. I'm super excited for the second season.
It's a good psychological sci-fi. Watch it if you like detective style stories.

I was toying with the idea for a while. I'll probably watch it after I'm done with Darker Than Black.

        Seems interesting.

This is literally one of the few animes to come out in recent years that actually interested me to the point where i ended up finishing it in 2 days which is rare for me given how generic and unoriginal / uncreative majority of new animes are . Definitely looking forward to season 2 .

I actually enjoyed this series quite a bit more than Darker Than Black. It kind of has a similar feel to it.

While PsychoPass is certainly a decent anime, it was also quite disappointing to me when I compare it to the best Scifi franchise the studio has to offer: GitS.

While GitS incorporates its themes far better into its story in the two SAC seasons and usually expands on them via the main narrative, most of the infodumps in PP come off as awfully pretentious because even though the characters often muse about philosophy and like to quite famous works of literature, they often end up as wasted time as the story meanders around doesn't capitalize on its full potential. Yayoi's backstory as just one of many examples for wasted characters is another point that bothered me, which is why I hope season 2 is aiming to close these gaps and making the franchise as a whole more enjoyable to me.
Still, to me PP is more "Huxley's CSI: Neo Tokyo" rather than a real alternative to GitS. maybe the show would have fared better it it wasn't that hungup on the second-rate intellectualism of Gen Urobuchi.

In any case, this will probably be one of the better anime in 2014 despite a lot of staff changes.

I tried a little bit of GiTS, but it was too cold for me. There's several series like that. Ergo Proxy felt that way to me, too. It just felt boring and distant to the viewer, no matter what great things it wanted to say. Urobuchi's works have a humanity to them which I love. Especially how he "humanizes" his villains. I haven't read all the books the series referenced, but it still worked really well. I love how Makishima could potentially be a hero of another story despite the horrible things he's done. I love how Akane develops from a inexperienced and naive woman to a confident and capable inspector in her own right, and the whole series ends on a very strong thematic note about upholding the law.

Fun fact: the Yayoi episode is the only one Urobuchi didn't write, I wondered why it seemed so pointless.

You call it humanity, I call it cheap drama. Especially a lot of the villians you praise often come across as over-the-top figures that exist primary to misquote literature. It's been a while since I watched PP, but I remember him taking Dostojevsky and Hegel quotes out of context and framing them poorly within the episode's narrative. Urobuchi might be more talented than the hacks who write Blast of Tempest, but he is surely not THAt talented.
And Ergo Proxy is a bit pretentious as well (spamming the term raison d'etre does not make your story better), I suggest you watch Texhnolyze or Serial Experiments Lain if you want a work of higher writing quality.

Well, I love Psycho Pass and think it's really well written. I know that some of the books are actually pretty damn relevant to the context, like 1984 is a very relevant book to use as foreshadowing in this type of story. But it's not the references that carry it, it's ultimately the characters and what is said through them. I need to rewatch it, but Akane's choice and development in the final episodes is great, her views are really admirable - to change the system rather than destory it, even if destroying it ultimately is probably the best way. The central idea of it is that it's the people themselves who uphold justice and law, and it's not something to be decided by a select group or to be prescribed. While the choice to choose can be painful, is something that truly makes life worth living, not just surviving. I also really got a kick out of the dominator technology, as far as visuals go.

PP is A LOT closer to Brave New World than 1984 though, mainly because of its caste system and intrinsic-based doctrination within the society rather than simple oppression. There is also a lot more Philip K. Dick instead of Orwell in here.

PS: 1984 is probably up there with 2001: A Space Odyssey and Star Wars with the things most commonly referenced in media. I will not praise a series just because it gets the very basics right, these type of stories demand a higher attention to detail and it often fails in PP. It's still far from a bad series; on the contrary: it is decent. But it often fals during this moments because it has less depth than the flagships and relies more on pretentious infodumps.
It's like GitS Innocence, in a sense.

It's used as foreshadowing for the fact that the system is actually the real enemy. I just remember noticing it in a brief frame that had the book, nothing to do with it's meaning just a neat foreshadowing detail to me. Granted, only reading the words Urobuchi and dystopia kind of made it obvious the system was gonna be the enemy. But I liked that placement.

Uh, I don't think it's some amazing thing that they reference those well-known books. I just felt like that particular reference wasn't just for kicks, for example. Every writer can reference books, but that's not what made me love Psycho Pass, you can still enjoy it without knowing all those references.

I get the feeling we argue past each other… The foreshadowing and everything was done right, but honestly: Who DIDN'T expect the system to be the "enemy" (the term is too simple for these kind of series)?
I argue that Urobuchi's metaphors and quotes are hit or miss and that the writing fails when it should matter the most.
The basic story progression and narrative are more than solid, but the intellectual pillars they stand on are porous. I'd would have been far better if it focussed more on the crime aspects and didn't try so hard to be deep.

Oh, okay, I get that. I feel like I'm not in a place to argue with that because some of those books and authors I've read a while ago or not at all. I'm not one to say whether they're appropraite and it was not the main draw of the series to me anyway.

                                  @Kizuchan:

                                  Agreed.
I enjoyed both Ergo Proxy and GiTS, but I liked Pyscho Pass a bit more.
I think Makishima was an absolutely brilliant antagonist. I actually was hoping that one of the protagonists would switch sides and join him because he was such a well done character.
Any series that can get you to root for both the protagonist and antagonist simultaneously is usually a masterpiece within the pyschological genre (Death Note was another one like this for me).

If i remember correctly … it's only Japan. They were talking about not letting any people from other countries in, because they wouldn't be in the system.
Although i don't know what exactly they were saying i'm sure it was in one of the later episodes.

Just when I was about to bemoan the absence of a certain white-haired devil somebody else appeared that might take his place… Interesting.

This sequel only has eleven episodes to work with and has quite the predecessor to surpass (or at least to break even). Seeing how a new writer is at the helm I do wonder how things will go. But I look forward to seeing those events unfold. Besides, there's also the movie acting as the direct sequel to this season.

It's only 2 episodes in but I am in love with Season 2 so far. If you were kinda ehhh about the pacing and wasted time of S1, this is definitely different. So far they've hit the pavement running and dove deep into the conflict. It's not taking it slow and explaining things or easing people into the story, you do need to have somewhat of an idea what is going on and how the world works. I've seen some folks telling people they can skip S1 and go straight into S2 O_o no, you cannot.

I was upset when I heard it was only going to be 11 episodes but I think if they keep this up, they'll be able to tell a good story. A lot was shoved in episode 2 but it worked out really well.

Back at the end of March, I went to the funimation at the movies showing of the first 4 dub episodes of PP and I thought it was cool and bought the box sets and I had no idea how hard I was going to fall in love with this series, its really bad.

It does kinda suck that all of the REALLY GOOD material and stuff that makes this series incredible is all the different supplemental materials: The profiling book, the novels, the spin-offs, the cooky radio dramas (though I think all of them have been translated by now). The novels especially, holy shit they are goldmines. It definitely takes knowing how to read japanese to be able to get the full experience of this series and that really sucks for me lol. Some people are translating certain stuff but there's so much to go through. I don't think the novels will ever get full english translations and that sucks because that's the best fucking part ;A; They've really expanded the universe/characters quite a bit.

The movie apparently is going to take place when they get into spreading Sybil worldwide (timeline wise it's going to be 4 years AFTER S2). I don't know to what extent, but so far it's known it's going to be taking place in SE Asia (sounds like the SE Asian countries have combined into one, or a good majority of them anyway) on a man-made island (Akane is sent here to handle something related to the roll-out).

The point was that she started out as naive and not that competent, but she learned through all the experiences she went through and became a capable inspector by the end.

I like how it focuses more on the cases and is far less pretentious so far. However, there are some strange continuity errors.
Why is Ginoza worried that Akane's Hue will get clouded and that she is getting "too personal" in regards to the case? Did he not see how she was nearly unaffected by the entirety of the first season Hue-wise?
Why do the inspectors still rely on technology so much even after they got proven in the very first episode that there are exceptions? I mean, doubting Akane when she spotted the WC? in her apartment was dumb because they already noticed that people were able to trick Hue-based sensors…

Also, Mika is way too one-dimensional and they just keep adding more plotlines they just don't have the time to resolve with only 8 episodes left imho. Yayoi's background episode feels even more wasted by now because we have no indication that her friend from that episode nor her backstory will ever be relevant again... Unless the movie is a direct sequel to season 2 I cannot see them having a satisfying conclusion for every plotline.

So, what the hell does pretentious even mean at this point? Cause you sure like the word a lot? It's used for so many things.. I've always understood it as being something that tries to be what it's not? Like, technically can't fucking One Piece called pretentious because it deals with some "big themes" like freedom or justice?
Another meaning I've gotten is that it demnds a lot out of the viewer, like reading extra material or even having to think about what you're watching? So, anything that asks any complicated question could be technically labeled a pretentious. I don't get it. Can't series have themes now?

Sorry if off-topic. This word confuses me.

Pretentious was PsychoPass when it randomly paused the plot to have character like Makashima or a few characters that follow him muse for minutes over deep concepts in literature while constantly misquoting them without any reason (Zetsuen no Tempest was guilty of that as well). I like Ghost in the Shell, I like Texhnolyze, I like Lain; they have a lot of complex themes going on and present themselves fairly well. However, their themes seem much better integrated than they were in PsychoPass season 1 and I am glad that with the death of Makashima we also lost the main source of these annoying elaborations.

PS: Didn't we already have that conversation before the show even started? Oh yes, we did. I am glad that the new studio is taking PP in a more grounded direction, though.

Pretentious was PsychOpass when it randomly paused the plot to have character liek Makashima or a few characters that follow him muse for minutes over deep cocnepts in literature whiel constantly misquoting them without any reason. I like Ghost in the Shell, I liek Texhnolyze, they have a lot of complex themes going on and present themselves fairly well. however, their themes seem much better integrated than they were in psychoPass season 1 and I am glad that with the death of Makashima we also lost the main source of these annoying elaborations.

Nah, I'm just curious about the pretentious thing. I'm just really confused about the use of pretentious because it's abused for everything that attempts to have any themes at this point as one of those annoying as hell buzzwords.

And true, it is a buzzword for a lot of people. Then again, arguying on most anime sites is mostly a lost cause because there is really no interest in critical evaluation.

I don't know how relevant the literature quoted is and quite honestly don't really care one bit because that doesn't make Makishima any less engaging antagonist to me. He's still a pretty great example of humanized evil. He's going against the system, but still a horrible psychopath that needs to be stopped.

Don't really know what to think about season 2 so far, though. Mika is pretty terrible, but everything else is sort of just build-up.

Ginoza is worried because Akane is still human, he definitely now has an idea (if he hasn't the entire time) that Akane is still in agony over Kougami, and now they have a case where they can't identify who the hell is perpetrating these crimes because Kamui doesn't exist according to the Sibyl System. Ginoza is grounded and logical and like most of the other characters, he can't wrap his mind around everything yet because it seems impossible. It's different from Makishima being unable to be judged by the dominator, even though that was the case, Sibyl still recognized his existence. So far in S2 we're given the idea that Kamui is somehow "invisible" to Sibyl's eyes. So that's why everyone so far thinks it's illogical to assume that someone who is capable of not even registering as a human can even exist. It's easy to see why they think Akane is losing her mind. Of course compared to Mika, Gino is going to trust Akane a bit further but he has every right to be worried at this point.

And if the opening is any sort of foreshadowing, Akane's sanity is going to get pushed to the breaking point at some part.

Mika I do think will have a purpose; she is a textbook perfect citizen by Sibyl's definition, and a perfect Inspector. We can't say for sure but I feel like it's safe to assume that considering her parents were able to send her to Oso Academy that she had a pretty stable and regular upbringing (no idea if it was happy). It's good that she's there (even though she's annoying) because she stands for everything Akane wants to destroy. At some point she is going to stand between Akane and her goal of dismantling Sibyl. I hope and pray that it DOESN'T involve Ginoza getting hurt trying to stop Mika or sacrificing himself for her because she is not worth it >__> But I think it's significant that Mika was put in Division 1 with Akane. Sibyl is fully aware of what Akane thinks and feels about it and they stated their interest in testing the limits of her mind last season.

Then there's that sexy bastard Togane. I'm curious to see exactly what role he is going to play.

I had a theory for the direction of S2 BUT if these Episode 4 spoilers that came up on 2ch yesterday are true I'll need to rethink it. Last week the spoilers were correct but I have no idea if was the same source as last time or not.

And I love Kougami, I really love Kougami, but people are driving me fucking crazy with all the whining about where he is at. I think the end of S1 established he wasn't going to be back for S2. Of course PP cannot be complete without coming back to him eventually, but all the people boycotting S2 are missing out on an excellent ride.

Kagari was the least developed characters in the series and he's more interesting than any of these new characters introduced. Then again, Urobuchi made me like the guy in the span of a episode. It's like he had an interesting world-view and nuance or something.

Akane is pretty much the only "sane" inspector. Everyone else basically does whatever the dominator tells them too. It also helps that akane knows the truth about Sybil so she's not going to fire at everyone that Sybil's deems as having a clouded hue.

As for why people don't have any means of fighting back aside from the dominator. It's because Sybil is a really flawed system. The dominator is basically a free pass to kill or restrain. Any other means can basically screw you over. Like what was show this very episode with the inspector, is that fighting back has a potential to cloud your hue. Especially if you intent to kill them with self defense which would basically easily put your hue in the 300+ CC level. And then there's also the drawback that if you reach a high enough CC level you're basically branded a criminal for life. So it's basically a catch 22. You're screwed either way. Which is why when criminals show up that have a way to keep their CC hue in tact can basically do whatever they want and the people really have no way to stop them.

So basically it's a calculated dumbness. Eventually, Sybil will try to recruit the mastermind into it's hive mind like it tried to do in Season 1 with Makishima. The collective basically wants people that think outside the established Sybil system. If they refuse the offer to join them, that's when Sybil will then want to kill them.

It's frustrating for us to watch, but aside from what Phoenix Zoan touched on, think back to the episodes in S1 with the helmet people. And how crimes were committed out in the open and people just looked at it like they couldn't even comprehend what was happening. And then the other people who just easily snapped into a violent rage and attacked back.

There isn't as much crime in this society because the natural order of things under Sibyl involves a lot of suppression of emotions and basic human nature. Everything revolves around keeping your hue clear, and people obsessively morph their lives around that. This is why they can't deal with stress because dangerous and stressful situations tip people into unhealthy state of minds, and it just snowballs in someone who grew up without ever having to even think about dealing with these things. And as this episode pointed out yet again, people are so afraid of their own mind they "treat" themselves into a vegetative state.

According to the official timeline, the aptitude test and psycho-pass had been around for a couple of generations prior to S1, and it was 20 years prior to S1 that crime-coefficients would become what was used to judge the good and bad of society as a whole. Some people are thinking that Sibyl had only been around for 20 years or so, and are confused why a lot of the older generation is not questioning it's authority, but it actually began earlier than that. So by this point it's deeply embedded into every living person, the expectations and what's valued in this society to the point that no one really questions it. Our common sense really has no understanding or place at this time.

So I understand WHY Division 3 acted as it did, it didn't make it right but as someone else pointed out, Akane is definitely NOT the typical thinking citizen in this time. Mika definitely is, which is why she's pretty rigid and uptight (but I think her playing by the rules bit also has to do with her own trauma, she told her friend to go confront Rikako directly and it got her killed. Now she doesn't want to take the responsibility for acting on her gut and someone getting hurt.. and instead that just got a lot of innocent people killed) and did not think to question the proper procedures. All of her, as well as the others involved here, major life decisions were always made for her, she was always told what to do, her "judgement" wasn't really called upon in any significant way up until now. Sibyl works because of the blind trust placed into it by the citizens, they accept it's always going to look out for their welfare and not lead them astray as long as they do what they're told.

I'm interested to see what happens now with Mika, this was a pretty blatant wake-up call the system is NOT out to protect the victims, and if you ever try to even protect yourself from harm, you've become the criminal. The true nature of Sibyl just gets sicker and sicker.

They can't, Japan completely cut themselves off. I assume they still have to have SOME diplomatic relations, but the canon conflicts itself in a few places. I think with the movie synopsis out, it's safe to assume there are still some at least other semi-organized countries with governments out there, but to what extent it's not certain (maybe the novel in December will shed some light on it). The show makes it sound like Japan is the only civilized country left standing in the world but I have a hard time believing Japan was essentially left alone while the rest of the world was plunged into chaos. Yeah with developing a self sufficient food source and the rest of the world squabbling over limited resources, there's no way they weren't targeted. And I have a hard time believing, with the little notes there are (because the official timeline vaguely touches on what's going on in the rest of the world but it's centrally focused on Japan), that the US and Europe don't exist in any sort of capacity anymore. I'm pretty sure they're still around they just don't give us much to go on as it is.

As far as the media goes, the government controls what is presented on TV. Sibyl pretty much dictates what media is authorized to exist or not. It's been stated that movies are no longer made (I think since about 70-80 years prior to the series). And that Akane's parents generation was the last to have blu-ray and cartoons. So it doesn't sound like most man-made entertainment is around any longer. They do have access to some older books, movies, and music (and then there's a black market for banned media as well). And we know that only Sibyl authorized artists and musicians can legally participate in the arts. Video games are still around.

It seemed like the internet too was only accessible in Japan, and by how the characters have talked (which could just be an oversight), the internet may have disappeared at some point in history and its re-introduction was pretty modern (I'll ask someone that can read the japanese books to verify if that's in there because i have no clue, that's just a guess. But there are a ton of contradictions between the supplemental materials and the anime so, it may be nothing). But then there was the bit with Saiga and Kougami checking out the illegal discussion board "hosted on a foreign server." It sounded like it took someone unscrupulous and "in the know" in order to access such forums, so the average citizen in Japan probably has no clue. They didn't mention though if people from another part of the world were actually chatting on the board as well (I don't think anyway). So who knows.

                                                                                                  Maybe they'll throw us a bone in the movie or the Sibyl Origins novel next month will explain some shit, because at this point I just want to know more of the world background than anything else ^^;;;
