(English) Vol.8 available?

Today, I recieved a spam from the place I bought volumes 3-7 from (discountanimedvd.com FWIW), saying "We have volume 8 at last". At their site, they claim "release date 4th October" but also that they have stock which "typically ships in 24-48 hours"

-Since I wasn't in the market when volume 7 came out, is this a trap? Do they take your money, sit on it til the 2nd or 3rd, then finally let it go so it arrives on the nominal release date (like some other items with specific publicised release dates?)

-Did they release 8 early? If I can get it now at a local brick-and-mortar, spending $5 or 6 postage doesn't add up when I'm only getting a $2.50 discount off of the price and will have to wait anyway.

And, to save the obvious discourse: Yes, I do know of scanlations, and a 50M download is still too much especially because I can't take it away from the computer to read.

Surprisingly, Viz released multiple graphic novels much earlier than expected this month. Including Death Note 1 and… One Piece 8.

At least... According to the Viz website, it's out, so that means there could very well be some authenticity to that site's claims. Maybe to be safe you should just order from Viz's website directly, but hey.

Well, I figure either way I'll be able to have it in a week and a half or so, cos worst comes to worst, I could go to the local bookshop-comic specialty shop-whatever and buy it on the 4th.

Okay, it's Friday… by the time they pack and ship, Monday or Tuesday, so I'd have it by the 29th or 30th.... but conversely, if I go to a local shop, they might have it sooner. Does "released" mean "actually in shops", or "come back in three days when the truck comes"

I've never really liked fanart so I don't really care about the lack of that

And this is sort of off-topic...but does anyone here have FMA volume 3? The release date was the 3rd but all my local bookstores don't have it, did Viz delay it?

Well, can and do aren't the same. I thought, given that the fanart in Vol. 7 was presumably the best they could find, I could dredge up a hundred better fanarts in a night on Deviantart. Perhaps they're limited in their pool (no matter how badass a Smoker one draws, he's not gonna appear in the fanart of a volume before Loguetown), but still, it sucked.

Its not that its Japanese. Its that it happends to be in the japanese One Piece, as opposed to the english one.

Face it, Viz picks or (more likely) recieves only so-so submissions.
One Piece is not that popular here at all. The submissions they get won't be anything amazing, its not Viz's fault.

But in Japan where One Piece is mega popular, people with high talent will spend their time thinking up and creating great pieces.

A 10 minute picture of Sanji smoking with the title "Sanji is cool!"
Is not going to compare to a picture of Sanji done entirely in hatch marks that took over an hour.

Its a fact of life. The lousy little pics viz had in Vol.7 are seafoam before the typhoonic might of the pictures that get in the Japanese volumes.

Niether can I. You can read the scans. The version you buy dosen't need to be readable.
Beleive me, just being able to look at the pictures clear as day is fufilling. Don't doubt that.

That and they they are 30 volumes ahead in Japan. :P

Well, 8 came today, and I plowed through it in record pace.

-No fanart box whatsoever.

-Seemed like fewer SBSs than other volumes.

-Full page GB ad. You know, games don't look good in 1x1, black-and-white screen shots!

-Since I first saw Arlong in the anime, I can now start drawing comparisons. Hatchi seems much stockier than in the anime, and Kuroobi leaner. He seems about 30 percent less hunky in fact. <3 ? Nezumi also looks very different, less disheveled.

The paperback Viz volumes here are $15-17 per volume, excluding sales tax. One could easily spend over one hundred dollars on six volumes. :/

As I gather, one issue of American Shonen Jump has between 2 and 4 chapters of OP. I don't buy it, cos I get as much entertainment out of the SBS as from the manga itself. :D

$15-17? That's not American dollars, is it?

I order mine off the Internet– the site I mentioned in the first post seems to sell them for just under six dollars a volume. Sadly, the savings gets eaten up by postage. I bought volume 8, two of the small figures at a bit under USD 2 each (the Chopper is sitting on my keyboard), and postage, and it came to just under USD 15.

Just so yo UKers know, Amazon.co.uk has vol 8 avaible for pre-order, it just says delivers in 1-2 weeks, so I'm guessing that is correct? Also, most of this month's manga is out tomorrow on Amazon (Death Note etc)
