Namco Bandai has announced that it is releasing a new godzilla game for the PS3 this winter

ANN: Bandai Namco Games is announcing on Thursday that it will release the Playstation 3 game Godzilla in Japan this winter. The action game lets you play the monster itself against human civilization, as you clear missions by destroying buildings and weapons. The game will recreate the look of tokusatsu (special effects) movies, including signature tokusatsu camera angles and gunpowder explosions, with the latest graphics.
Famitsu magazine describes a backstory that takes its cues from TOHO's first Godzilla movies: Godzilla, who appeared in Tokyo in 1954 and was brought down by the secret weapon Oxygen Destroyer, has somehow made landfall again. The player must destroy buildings in the stage with Godzilla's iconic attacks. The game will also have the 2014 American version of Godzilla from Gareth Edwards and Legendary Pictures.

There is, they haven't said it yet, but you can see mecha Godzilla in one of the shots with smoke, as well as a Godzilla vs Godzilla 2014 fight.

Not really, from what ive heard its an adventure game and they made it clear that its not a fighter. It could possibly be reminiscent of the dreamcast godzilla games (only good)

Looks nice.

But Godzilla should not have a HUD.

Its really distracting in that otherwise immersive footage.

I was gonna come in here and say it looks really bad, but I wasn't looking at dates and didn't realize the video in the OP was an older trailer. There graphically it looked super budget, but just saw the new trailer and it actually looks quite nice now. I'm still a little confused on what exactly the game is tho. Do you go from point A to point B causing mayhem which ends in a boss fight?

the radar ought to be useful, because I'm kind of thinking this will have a poor camera. they talked about "tokusatsu camer angles", so it may even be fixed.
the breath meter is there because there's some sort of mechanic to prevent you from just breathing fire on absolutely everything 100% of the time.
the destruction meter stuff on the right is probably the most important bit, though - you'll probably want to get that as high as possible. it's like a combo meter, but for how much chaos you're causing.
and of course the boss health bars have to show up.

I dunno, man. it's a video game. it has systems and mechanics. I like knowing about these while I play.

If the map is large enough to get lost on, maybe. But its free roaming Godzilla. He should be able to just get anywhere.

As boring as it quickly becomes, it would be nice to get a modern destruction-based game. I think the closest we had in the last generation was Red Fraction: Guerilla.

Well hopefully there could be a way to get rid of the hud, but i definitely have a feeling there will at least be some kind of playback or mode where you can view each stage with the angles and look of the films.

Even if its linear ill be happy, ive wanted a godzilla adventure kinda game for some time. Ill admit super godzilla was my guilty pleasure, and the atari godzilla games just didnt do it for me.

I've never liked imprecise measurements of things I'd rather know exactly. give me a health bar anyday, especially over the red screen of death.

I think you just have an idea of what the game is like, and what the purpose of it is, without actually playing it. You say "you shouldn't be chaining from one building from the other", but what if you are? Sure, not zippity fast like Dante, but a lumbering tank of destruction, where you're supposed to be either stomping or setting something on fire at all times, juggernauting your way to the goal? and the radar is obviously not map-oriented, but to show the enemies. like when you get surrounded by tanks and planes and get to shoot them out of the sky and stuff. or maybe to point you in the direction of large monsters to fight?

I don't know, maybe it's all superfluous because the game is so shallow you don't need any of it. But I'm certainly not bothered by a HUD in a video game, especially a minimalist one like this.

Because from what's shown in the trailer, the game is clearly going for more cinematic immersion given the camera and scale of the playable character? And the HUD distracts from that.

If it wants to be a gamey game, pull the camera out and show the city around the character for a ways. If it wants to be THAT up close and fancy, then…
