So yeah…this completely flew under my radar, but Nicholas Cage will be playing the main character in a movie based on a fairly popular Apocalyptic Literary serie titled "Left Behind" (that finished up around 13 years ago).

      http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2467046/?ref_=nm_flmg_act_6

This serie was actually turned into a movie serie a LONG while ago while the books were still being written. The studio managed to produce 2 before the authors (who are clearly religious) perceived it to be a pile of contrived, preachy church basement shit and sued the studio to halt the production of 2 additional movies and a tv serie. Now…several years later, they are trying again with the clear intent to appeal to the general audience.

The interesting thing is, the book serie DOES focus mostly a lot on the apocalyptic fun stuff (plagues, explosions, murders, etc...) but at the same time tried to balance out the boring religious schmuck. It seems this movie clearly will be focusing on the explosions and intrigue, but I am curious how they will handle the movies without being TOO preachy about "believing in God or facing his wrath" sort of message that is fairly consistent throughout the franchise.

Will this actually be successful? Probably not.
Will this cause repercussions that will backfire on the studio and the authors? Probably will
Will Nicholas Cage be worthwhile to watch in an apocalyptic goof of a movie? Hell yeaaaah!

OOOOH btw...before anyone beats me to it. Here is a completely relevant clip:'

They already made movies of the whole book series, didn't they? I remember the first one got a lot of media attention because it had an actor that was somewhat well known, though not as much as Nicolas Cage (He'll star in anything, though).

Edit: Read your paragraph under the video… I hadn't heard about that... so how are they now getting permission? Are they like, "yeah, we're just going to pander to the lowest common denominator, no real biblical message, you ok with that?" and they're like, well, since you put it that way, sure!

This movie looks like total shit. Even the posters look like bad photoshop. Nicolas Cage would be worth the watch but it irks me that after the dude looked like he was on track for another career rebound, he had to star in this turkey.

I tried to find a video of the Simpsons parody of this but couldn't find anything.

Actually it is the authors themselves that wanted to pander to the lowest common denominator. They pretty much HATED the Kirk Cameron movie (the first serie which was supposed to have 2 more movies and a tv serie) and found a way to kill it by suing the studio that made it (or I think they also waited until the contract ran out or something…I dunno. I heard two separate accounts). So...yeah, it is the religious authors that want it to be full of explosions and excitement and so on. It's...pretty weird and makes me consider whether it is fair to call them "sell-outs".

This movie looks like it should go straight to TV.

Of course they didn't miss out on the suspicious Muslim in an airplane cliché.
