Chapter 1 "spread"

In the Viz volume 1, at the very beginning of the story, there's the introductory page where Gol D. Roger says his last words, then a huge spread on the next page, with the 'Romance Dawn' title, which shows Luffy and Nami alongside the Shanks crew.

On this spread, I notice several odd things:

-Nami appears, despite she not appearing in the story until six or seven chapters later.

-No sign of Zoro (figuring if they'll show Nami, they'd show him)

-Yasopp appears as one of the dozens of minor faces in the background, but his headband is missing the last two letters of his name.

So I'm wondering:
For the first two oddities: There was the huge cry over the recent colourspread implying Franky is becoming a crewmember. Is it common that Oda gives the game away in colour-spreads?

For the last oddity: Was Yasopp's name not formalised then? Or was it a mere typo.

When some SJ series start, it's not at all uncommon for the mangakas to put chracters that appear later into the introductory colour spread. I'm guessing the mangakas haven't exactly finalised when these characters appear so sometimes they don't come into the story until much later

If you've been keeping up with Bleach, you'll see that one the characters in the first colour spread (Hiruko) has appeared for the first time only recently (after 3 years)

I think Oda had planned for her to be part of Shank's crew, but he changed his mind later..

the colour spread sometimes do foresee things in the story, we've seen in it luffy fighting a big snake in a skypea-like cenario, the fights of Arlong Park and some even have a more obscure meaning like the one of the lasts that had some frogs and a few stuff someone said related to bringing back/returning and was missing Robin and Usopp.

Also Nami's been present since Romance Dawn ^^

I'm guessing that has more to do with it than anything else, though I think i found it a little strange at first too. shrug

I thought she didn't show until chapter 8 or so, technically in the volume, so it seemed weird to give it away in chapter 1. I assumed the spread appeared with chapter 1 in the original weekly publication.

Shanks and Nami both have red hair… we don't know Nami's real parents... Shanks is a pimp, he probably has a chick in every town he has went by... do your math.

Okey, seriously, I don't think there's anything between the two. At most Nami could had stolen money from Shanks, after all she was a pirate thief, but that's it. Oda probably had Nami on his mind long before the series began. In two pilotes of One Piece, in the other there's a Nami lookalike with a touch of Tashigi and in the other a Nami lookalike with a lot of common with Vivi.

The reason Nami is in that spread and not Zoro most likely is because Oda originally wanted Zoro to first appear in the Buggy arc as the swordsman of Buggy's crew, then afterwards join Luffy.

So, I'm guessing Nami was originally slated to appear first. But Oda changed his mind last minute and had Zoro appear in the Morgan chapters.
