What manga are you reading and how do you like it? What do you plan to read?

I'm kind of up for reading a sports manga any recommendations?
I prefer ones with great characters, if the manga is too focused on the sports aspect it's hard for me to get invested.

For example Ippo is that way where an insane amount of chapters is spend on the matches(although Ippo at least did a decent job of building it's opponents).
I kind of liked reading Baby Steps for a while(read until the second trip to the US) but yeah the matches are starting to drag on in this one and sadly none of the opponents are interesting enough to read through them.

I'm almost sure that Eyeshield 21 is my favorite sports series despite the awkward racial commentary. Chihayafuru, Teppuu and Hikaru no Go are other titles I enjoyed quite a bit. I can't seem to get into Kuroko nor Haikyuu, is there anything else good out there? Is Area no Kishi any good?

Edit : I second Real . It's a damn great manga though sports is like a sub-genre and there are no long matches or anything . It's more focused on Three characters and their development . It's also made by the Author of Slam Dunk and Vagabond.

Finished Lucifer and the Biscuit Hammer and Genkaku Picasso, and caught up with Sengoku Youko. The first was an above average read, not a typical shonen and its greatest strength was the character development but something about it kept me from really liking it. Having read the ending of Genkaku Picasso, it was so emotional that I wanted to cry. I'd recommend this manga, especially to people like me who tire of the mainstream battle shonen mangas. Sengoku Youko started off slow, but I really got into it once part one was over and they changed up the main cast. The shogun was an amazing character and it has been sometime since I took such a liking to a character.

I plan to get into Durarara by reading the manga but I think its original source material was light novel/anime? I want to check out Vinland Saga but I'm having doubts to whether or not I'll become interested in it.

You comment made me read the summary, and I found it interesting. But unfortunately there is no scanalation beyond chapter 4 or 5 and where I live there's no way to get printed volumes.

Edit: Going to start reading Akira since its only 38 chapters and maybe Parasyte since it's also short, just finished Elfen Lied wow was that awesome it had a much better ending than the anime.

Haven't got to far in the Toriko manga yet but from what I read it's pretty damn cool.

Maybe you would like to try Shuna no Tabi. Similar plot, it's considered a Nausicäa's prototype, and it has just some few chapters. Here the info about it in Nausicäa's net site.

Nausica is among my best mangas ever.

This manga needs more love! Discovered someone scanlating it again a few weeks ago. Reread the series from the beginning and its still awesome. Easily one of the best shounen series I ever read.

I started reading Akame Ga Kiru and Nanatsu no Taizai and I have to say I'm really enjoying Nanatsu. Good manga so far, looking forward to the anime as well.

Hmm, started and dropped Legend of Koizumi because I was interested in the political figures/over the top games but I don't get mahjong. Currently reading Sket Dance and Nobunaga no Chef and thinking of starting Soul Eater/God of High School. Nobunaga no Chef is the most interesting out of these, I'm just starting the second chapter and I'm already hooked.

EDIT: Holy Shit, if I had to loosely describe Nobunaga no Chef, it would like Kingdom meets Shokugeki no Soma.

! The MC's about to have his dessert shokugeki with another chef from his time period in front of the EMPEROR!!! This manga is amazing. Would recommend.

I'm reading this manga called 'Again!!'. It's about a loner boy who goes back in time and joins his high school cheer squad. I think it started off slow, but it has really grown on me with good characters and comedy. Plus I really like the art.

Just read Witches (Majo) by Igarashi Daisuke A master piece. The stories and characters were brilliant, but, personally I found it has some true wisdom about the life in this planet. So good!!

Well I finally got round to reading Akame ga kill and I have to say I really enjoyed it. I went in with low expectations because I hadn't really heard many positive things about the series but I was very pleasantly surprised. The author sure isn't afraid to kill of characters and it's got a nice pace to it, but it is kind of weird how much of a side character Akame ends up being. It feels like the author had some bigger plans for her but ditched them part way through or at least delayed them. I'm looking forward to the anime this summer though the colour schemes for the characters are a bit jarring.

I read the series written by Okado Tatsuya. I found a little gem in Tuesday, 9PM with a lovely mixture of perversion and sweetness. Doll is a great comedy aimed most likely to adult audience. To Remember Summer was not that good as the other ones, but like a pic of the life of a teenager in some summer that didn't go anywhere. The art is a point for this author.

Eh for me these characters never had to be deep, give them a flashback and some enjoyable character quirks and I'll still miss them.

They don't need to be deep in any way. It just that they need to have interesting personality and back story that actually explores and explains their character but here the backstories are literally shoved down your throat to make you feel sad for them when they die . These characters are hardly anything worth giving a damn about and are extremely shallow stereotype characters from harem / high school romance manga . Not to mention how their generic deaths are used as shock value and used as plot device to move the plot forward .

Any idea if there's anything similar to LOTR Or A Song of Ice and Fire (only similarities I want is a rich world, with cool characters and awesome battles)?

How about Trinity Blood? Oh wait, you mean light novels… Try Kino no Tabi. It's certainly very thought provoking. Or Densetsu no Yuusha no Densetsu. The translations are pretty good and not that hard to follow. You can find them on baka-tsuki.

Reading the chapters of Berserk that were missing from Batoto. I don't know what to pick up after this, I'd like to try to get back into HSDK or check out Skip Beat based on the anime/mange recommendation thread.

Finished catching up with Barakamon and maaaaan!

Never have I related so much to a male protagonist. He's like super cynical and may come off as a jerk to people he meets, but the additional layers he gets when the people of the island interacts with him is a great mix of heartfelt and fucking adorable! I just love this guy, and everyone he meets. It also helps that the scanlations keep the islander-speak and it really sort of adds to the whole experience. The secondary main character is also adorable as heck! Naru has a bit of Yotsuba in her, but there's a ton of tomboyish aspects that makes her pretty damned badass in numerous situations. And it's mostly because she's just that much adapted to the environment of the island. Hopefiully this manga stays good, because 3 volumes down and it's already potentially in my top 5.

So yeah. I suggest it if you are into slice of life stuff with excellent and adorable characterization. This reminds me to pick back up Silver Spoon. I started reading it, but I unno… I'm finding it very difficult to get into. The characters I feel talk about about thier job like it's exposition too much, and it kinda makes me crave some actual character driven moments outside of the obligatory "reaction faces" to visual jokes or gags. I'll try to make it to atleast chapter 30.
