I started to read from the Kalifa fight and I think I caught up just as EL was over.
Cool, the Kalifa - Nami fight starts in Chapter 407, "Monster", released on the 17th of April, 2006.

Where do you get these exact dates ? Cause I tried looking them up in the past and all I could find was the volume release date.
I usually just use the dates provided on the wiki, unless they seem off in some way.
Every time somebody has cited a particular period of time they started reading (like "summer 2007" or something) and a rough chapter number, it's all matched up pretty well though.
It's more than good enough for the purposes of this thread.

Haha, thanks buddy.
It's the child of my passion for One Piece, and my passion for raw statistics.
I used to make OP related statistics for myself when i was younger.
Had a list of the volumnes (I think i did that until volumne 20 orso) and added there which DF was introduced, where pandaman can be seen, how many pages the volumne has etc..
Haha, good old times to pass the waiting time until a new volumne was released.(No weekly chapter available at that time)
Even kept score how many times i read each volumne. -

Chapter 741, and I wish I had started much earlier haha

I was intrigued by the anime series when I saw giants figthing in little garden…decided to watch the anime from the start to its most current episode...marathon galore....averaged 20 eps a day.....ran out of episodes to watch...decided to join a small forum for updates....not enough info....so decided to join ap...discovered that manga scans were available online...continued to follow the manga via online scans around skypiea arc , enel on maxim....discovered there were a lot of fillers in the anime....decided to read the manga series from the start...was not dissapointed...still following it to current date. XD
-
I was also a 4Kidder. watched the first episode till it was canned. but then years later i discovered internet and watched the english subs from skypea to thriller bark. the most recent episode. i searched the net and discovered the manga. continued off in thriller bark all the way to chapter 522.
i'll never forget that because the first "new" chapter i enjoyed was 523 "Hell" (which was the chapter the Strawhats' locations were revealed) followed by 524 "Nobody Can Stop it Now" where it showed the most of the Shichibukai gathered in one room and all the Marines. What pure epicness! I thought every manga release was going to be groundbreaking like those chapters. Definitely happy memories.
-
When I started reading, I think 5 volumes or so had been dropped in my country, and they released them on monthly basis, with the first 1-3 volumes dropping at once, so I was hooked really early on. Then they started delaying here, and I sort of forgot about it. I really started to read continously, I think 2010 or so, after having dropped it in the middle of Enies Lobby
-
Since the timeskip. IDK why, but when I heard about it I decided to start reading One Piece.
-
I've first completed the manga at the end of the Luffy vs. Lucci fight, Chapter 427, so I guess I've been a fan since late 2006. It's amazing to think now that I've been with One Piece since then. The trip has been totally worth it. I've been with Naruto and Bleach for even longer and I really regret underestimating OP and reading it last. Both of those series have let me down many, many times. At its worst times, One Piece has been mediocre. For the majority of the ride, it's been incredible.
EDIT: The chapter came out on September 16, 2006. So it was about around that time.

Chapter 741, and I wish I had started much earlier haha
Cool, that's Chapter 741, "Liar Usoland", released on the 17th of March, 2014.
Haha, yeah, I wish I'd started earlier too, or at least just not taken so long to get up to date.

Well that sounds to me like Chapter 277, "Maxim", released on the 26th of May, 2003.

Well if we're talking 2010, then somewhere in the MF/Gray terminal/Return to Saboady arc?

Lol yeah, Bleach and Naruto have been on a major downslope for quite some time.
They can still occasionally entertain me, mainly with specific charcters like Urahara or Might Guy, but it's rare.
Anyway, yeah, so Chapter 427, "It's not like it's hell here", released on the 16th of September, 2006.

Yeah, took me quite some time to catch up entirely though. But I think I started reading the fishman arc a year or later or so and then the fishman chapters were still fresh. Did Oda have some major break between the time skip?

There was a 4 week break that was absolute torture lol

Haha, I can picture it. I think the 2 week breaks after every new year is terrible. 4 weeks would have me becoming a smackhead so I would find a substitute of sort. On the other hand, I've been hardened by the pathetic release rate of Berserk and Black Lagoon. So if I could have that sort of expectation on One Piece, maybe I would make it. I guess one chapter a week spoils you.

Lol yeah, pretty much.
I'm kinda glad I wasn't on here during that 4 week break, though.
God knows what the existing chapter thread would have been like.

It's almost worth looking it up . Point being: breaks are worse than deepfried diapers.

Hey Guys,
I'm not sure if something similar to this has been done before but yesterday I was thinking about how long I've been reading OP and how I could so specifically remember the first "new" chapter that I read.
I was thinking it would be kinda cool for everyone to think back to their own similar experience ("new" manga chapter) and look up the number, title and release date of that chapter.
From these figures I can work out an average up-to-date fan tenure on AP, and we can all gaze in awe at people who were smart to have been reading from way way back.
Not important in the slightest, but just some silly statistics I'd like to examine.
So to start us off, my first "new" chapter of One Piece was Chapter 515 : "Adventure on the Island of Women", released on September 22nd, 2008.

BEEN BIG FAN WITH THE ONE PIECE AND STORM CHASERS FOR MANY YEARS.
i start with OP on tonami on cartoony network. CAUGHT UP WITH MANGA IN 2005 WITH THRILLER BAR.
first chapter with moria. ki shi -
I had watched the first hundred English episodes of One Piece a couple of times in my teenage years (15-16). I loved it, but at the time it didn't fathom me to watch anime with subs, or read manga. I knew how many more episodes there really were, and saw a bunch of pictures of fun events here and there and I just had to know, so I started watching it, around the age of 17.
Quickly caught up and then started reading the manga. Dunno the exact chapter. Somewhere around the Straw Hats being attacked by the Kumas and Kizaru at Saboundy. I wasn't really expecting myself to start reading it, but the episodes ended at such a critical moment that I just had to know. The latest released chapter at the time was Luffy vs Blackbeard, I believe, at Impel Down, so I read till then.

I figure I may as well throw my name into this thread. Watched the show sporadically with both the 4kids and Funimation dubs, but didn't get into the manga until towards the end of my freshman year. Read through the whole series in a matter of a couple weeks in March already knowing Ace had recently died. The first chapter though I explicitly remember reading spoilers for was 579 with the arrival of Shanks. So that would put me at a chapter with a street release of March 29, 2010.

I remember watching part of a random episode on the TV , but the show never caught me eye. I didn't even knew the name of the show.
A few years later, after I got introduced to the anime/manga world, I got to watch the anime and I enjoyed since the beginning. And it took me a long time to realize that the show I watched that time was One Piece.
I got caught up to the manga in chapter 618/619 I believe, right before Otohime/Tiger flashback. -
I had watched the first hundred English episodes of One Piece a couple of times in my teenage years (15-16).
The actual skirmish between Luffy and Blackbeard in ID took place in Chapter 544, "The Lid to the Cauldron of Hell Opens", released on the 1st of June, 2009.

I watched the first 140 episodes of One Piece when they first aired in Germany, and that got me into One Piece. When the Skypiea episodes started airing, I bought all the volumes released so far, and then for a while, I was happy buying the newest volume every few months. Then when I was reading Water 7 everything got so exciting and the wait was starting to get unbearable. Plus, I was getting spoiled on a few things, which was….annoying. So I found a site that had all the chapters (and is long gone, I should mention. I don`t even remember the name, lol) and I binge-read the Sea Train battles, the introduction phase of Enies Lobby, Robins flashback on that site, until I finally caught up around chapter 403 or 404, I think. And then I found Arlong Park and never left  I remember actually downloading each chapter for a while, from a dowload link Battle Franky would provide. Good times, good times.
-
I watched from ep 1 on Cartoon Network up to the end of Alabasta, from there I went to Japanese with subs and discovered the horror of 4Kids and how much better the original was, so re-watched from ep 1 in Japanese… I think up to Water 7? Then read the manga from chapter 1, when I caught up I think the Thriller Bark arc was just starting. I'll try think back and narrow down to which chapter!
I tend to not watch/read for a few years then splurge on a catch-up. It's only for the past year or two that I've been reading/watching mostly up to date.

I think we're all glad we found this place.
Apart from the occasional incident like the "Who will get the MM" thread lol
Anyway, let's go with the slightly further back option of Chapter 403, "Mr.Chivalry", released on the 13th of March, 2006.

Haha, well if you can narrow it down to even 5 chapters or so then we can just opt for the earliest of those chapters and call it even.
The start of Thriller Bark huh?

I started reading the manga on weekly basis from ch 651, i recall it was around the last week of dec 2011
My very first new chapter was luffy challenging Big M, damn i was soo hyped. -
I started reading the manga when the weekly scanlations were at the tail end of Skypiea.

Well that narrows it down to Chapter 286 - 292.
Anything more specific?
If not, let's just go for 286.

I just checked my volume, and I'm positive that I started following weekly at 287.
I think I remember discussing Noland's decapitation of the snake in the chapter discussion after making my introduction thread. -

In 2003 - 2004 the manga was covering Skypiea, The Davy Back Fight and the initial stages of Water 7, though.
So did you just read straight through from the Kuro arc at that point?

I think the first Volume was translated and published here in sweden around 2003. I was in my early teens and it was right after the final translated Dragon Ball Volume had been published here. Bonniers, the largest media group in sweden had chosen to go with One Piece as its sucessor. Me and my brother went out and bought the first volume as soon as we heard there was a new translated manga avaible in stores! (the swedish translations of Dragon Ball and One Piece by Bonniers förlag are amazingly fluent and faithful btw, to this day).
For years the Volumes would be released on a semi-monthly schedule, but i remember discovering that you could read ahead of the swedish translation on the internet so i starting to plow through scanlations around Whiskey Peak, and i plowed my way up to "present time" wich i think was halfway through the Luffy - Lucci fight at that time. Since then ive had both long and short breaks but my friends would always tell me when to catch up because the series was hitting new levels of awesomeness.
Just a little nugget, i remember thinking that the series was backpeddling and losing appeal during enies lobby, because 15 year old me thought CP9 had "too weak devil fruits".
I remember yawning at Lucci, and i couldnt make out how he could be a main villain when he was "just a ZOAN USER!!!!" who - at that time, to our knowledge- could never harm someone like Crocodile or Enel. Or even Smoker.
I thought he was a complete waste of time and it almost turned me off reading OP.I mean after we started of the grandling with invincible mafia Sandman, then we faced sky god of lightning on a golden airship… and then a guy who is just half leopard and guards a door?
thats not logical progression to a young teenagers brain:wassat:.But to this day im not a fan of "regular" Zoan users. That Mythical stuff on the other hand...

Haha very nice synopsis of your OP career, Dollar.
So are we talking around the time Luffy used Gear Third in his fight with Lucci?
Also, yeah…dose mythical zoans...

[/hide]Something like that, yeah. More specific i believe The chapter with the brief Lucci backstory might actually be when i finally caught up with the scanlations and had to wait like everyone else for the weekly fix.
another funny juvenile anecdote; when gear second was first shown, i thought it was going to be luffys "anti logia technique" designed to handle Aokiji. I was convinced that Kuzan was going to be the final boss of the arc, because he was a logia and logias had been the main antagonists in the grandline up to that point. As we know in the pre-haki days we had only seen natural, elementary counters to logia powers (crocodile - moist, Enel - rubber) so i figured Ice must be vulnerable to heat so luffy was gonna heat up his body with Gear second and "melt" Aokiji.
Its amazing how you remember all those little theories that you debated with your friends during class in junior high.
-

I was thinking absolutely the same at that time. Especially after learning that it was Aokiji's Buster Call Den Den Mushi that he had given Spandam, I had the feeling that he was lurking around something at or near Enies Lobby. Seems at least in that point we were right.
-
A relative bought me a Swedish-language volume 1 of One Piece in 2003. In spite of never having read it, because my Swedish isn't good enough, I came across the scanlated version sometime later, during the Water 7 arc.
I think I caught up during the bit directly after Franky's backstory when Lucci and co broke into Iceburg's mansion. (Didn't read the OP)

Haha in another series, Aokji would have so been the final villain of Enies Lobby.
Thankfully Oda has less appreciation for overcoming all odds asspulls than other lesser writers.
Anyway, the chapter where Vice Admiral Doberman sheds some light on Lucci's past is Chapter 422, "Rob Lucci", released on the 7th of August, 2006.

Hmm, it's actually a strange story. I think I first found OP in the American Shonen Jump, right when Luffy defeated Kuro. I believe it was December 2004, since I don't remember having any earlier issue. Or maybe it was Feb 2005? I don't remember exactly lol. So I bought the monthly magazine, followed OP and others for a few years. But then in 2007, I discovered the wonders of the internet, and watched the anime until episode 274. I think I followed it weekly before I discovered the manga again. I caught up fully chapter 424. And ever since then, I've been following OP weekly.
But for the sake of this thread, put me down as Dec 2004. That's the earliest definitive memory I have of reading OP. Plus it makes me feel old and elitist, thus justifying me whenever I harp on you young grasshoppers.

I'm afraid that under the terms of this thread that I'll have to go for Chapter 424, "Escape Ship", released on the 28th of August, 2006.
Since we're going for your earliest "up to date" chapter.

Ah, I see.
Well the main point of this thread is to find out how long you've been up to date with One Piece ie the earliest chapter you read that was the absolute latest available.
So where was the series when you caught up?
-
I remember being obsessed with it in early 2002, but because the full manga was nonexistent on the internet back then (or maybe I was just terrible at finding it ), I didn't get to read it until Shonen Jump started getting published in America which was in January of 2003. Been a dedicated fan for 12 years!
-
Been reading the series since the moment Arlong said "who is that man" after Luffy destroyed a wall to Arlong Park. Yes, it's been ages ago, been reading OP since then (downloaded the first ~10 volumes in small ZIP files from IRC). The translation was HORRIBLE, the pages were so small, you sometimes couldn't even tell what was happening - it really was hard to be a fan, so I dropped the series after the 10 volumes. Came back about a year later, when I found out there were online MSN galleries with chapters - first time I could read manga online in any way. Found out there actually was a lot more volumes (it was 2001 or 2002, I think) and the releases were just so far behind. This time I liked it a lot more, not as much as Naruto or Bleach (which were the "cool" things to like, back when they were actually good), but I still had a lot of fun reading Chopper's and Alabasta arcs… and then the other series lost quality, but One Piece seemed like it was constantly growing, so I slowly became a real fan, just like today.
