I remember being obsessed with it in early 2002, but because the full manga was nonexistent on the internet back then (or maybe I was just terrible at finding it ), I didn't get to read it until Shonen Jump started getting published in America which was in January of 2003. Been a dedicated fan for 12 years!

12 years huh? Very nice.

So going by 2003, we're talking somewhere in Skypiea then? (I don't know how the American SJ releases sync with the Japanese ones)

Been reading the series since the moment Arlong said "who is that man" after Luffy destroyed a wall to Arlong Park. Yes, it's been ages ago, been reading OP since then (downloaded the first ~10 volumes in small ZIP files from IRC). The translation was HORRIBLE, the pages were so small, you sometimes couldn't even tell what was happening - it really was hard to be a fan, so I dropped the series after the 10 volumes. Came back about a year later, when I found out there were online MSN galleries with chapters - first time I could read manga online in any way. Found out there actually was a lot more volumes (it was 2001 or 2002, I think) and the releases were just so far behind. This time I liked it a lot more, not as much as Naruto or Bleach (which were the "cool" things to like, back when they were actually good), but I still had a lot of fun reading Chopper's and Alabasta arcs… and then the other series lost quality, but One Piece seemed like it was constantly growing, so I slowly became a real fan, just like today.

I just looked it up and yeah, the American SJ started shortly after Skypiea began.

Yeah, I think it was around the beginning of Skypiea arc when I was reading One Piece weekly. And by weekly I mean "whenever the translation group released something."You can probably guess what I think about kids today talking that the story "moves slow" or that they "caught up to the series and now it'll be hard waiting 7 days for a new chapter."Kids - I had to WAIT to see Aokiji's fight with SH, I had to WAIT weeks to finally understand what Robin did, I had to WAIT to see Luffy's and Usopp's fight. There was A LOT of waiting all these years, and I never felt like the series lost quality.

Because of the horrible time I had trying to find the manga online back in 2002, I stuck with reading the American SJ and stopped searching for up-to-date chapters. It wasn't until I discovered this site in 2005 that I got somewhat caught up.

I remember episode 238 being out, so I searched until I could find the beginning of the Water 7 arc, which was chapter 322. (I skipped over the entirety of Jaya/Skypiea! I finally read that arc within these past 2 years.) After binging on the Water 7 chapters and episodes, I managed to catch up to when chapter 431 (Oct 2006) was released, so I got to experience the magic of reading a new chapter with an entire forum. Since then, I've been 100% caught up on the manga, reading the weekly updates.

tl;dr: Chapter 322 in 2005. Was finally 100% caught up with Water 7 when chapter 431 came out.

Half sided with Usopp and half sided with Luffy. The others debated over how legit the whole turn of events was.
"Come back!" VS "Good Riddance!" VS "Oda's just trolling us" VS "Oda's a genius of curve balls and drama"

Good times, lots and lots of debates.
I think someone even made and lost a death pact that Usopp would never officially return to the crew.

I started reading One Piece in American Shonen Jump when it first serialized. I first read it in the preview version of issue 1 that was released some time in late October 2002 I think. The preview issue only had the first chapter of each manga that appeared in the proper issue 1 (January 2003 issue. Released November 26 2002. The issues were always a month ahead for some reason). American Shonen Jump wasn't up to date though. It was a monthly magazine that started at chapter 1 and had 3 to 5 chapters an issue on average. Pretty much kept the same output as Japan, so it never caught up or fell further behind. I read it this way for a few years, until the climax of the Little Garden arc, after the chapter where Dorry and Brogy blast the Strawhats through the goldfish (Chapter 129). Then I discovered that I could read it online and that it was much further ahaead. When I caught up, it was the chapter where Luffy first reveals Gear 2nd to Blueno (Chapter 383). So when I first started reading, the latest chapter would've been roughly 250 (Gan Fall VS Shura) as far as I can tell.

Well from your explanation, it looks like your first up to date chapter was the one in which Luffy first revealed Gear Second.

That was in Chapter 387, rather than 383 though.

So that's Chapter 387, "Gear", released on the 31st of October, 2005.

I think the anime was about to begin the Thriller Bark saga, so I started to read the manga since that arc. The last chapter released in those days was the one with Luffy absorbing the shadows to became Nightmare Luffy. I remember the first week that I had to wait for a new chapter, it was eternal.

May sound like BS but, Shonen Jump Issue 1. I was like 11 at the time and honestly just wanted to read DBZ.

I remember it being my favorite after reading it. Although I had stopped reading after a few issues, don't recall why. Re-Discovered it a few years ago and wow did it grow. Caught up around the end of the Whitebeard War just before Ace dies.(August 2010?)

Since you didn't read constantly since the start of the series, but did after rediscovering the series later on, I'd be inclined to select the later chapter.

-Started to read the scan two or three weeks later (approximatively on 20 october) my first chapter was the "399 - Jump to the Falls!!".

I've re-read the entire manga since the start in automn/winter 2006. I'm a fan since Arabasta arc.

I started reading around early June 2010, after marathoning the anime for three weeks.

The first chapter I read was Chapter 550, and I've read every chapter since then, usually weekly, but sometimes I break for a couple weeks then catch back up.

I am not really sure which chapter it is, but I remember it's about when Luffy start fighting Ener..
Oh, and also I read them from a combination of Chinese raw (downloaded with irc) and Stephen's translation which appear one or two days later. Lots of work, but getting you the bragging right over the ones who patiently wait until the proper scanlation is ready.
Of course, later when [n-u-l-l] coming with their scanlation, I will reread the chapter again.
I think [n-u-l-l], in term of its scanlation quality, is the equivalent of mangashare at the moment.

Somehow I found that the combination of Raw + translation, allows me to enjoy the artwork better. I tend to spent more time on each panels trying to decipher what's really drawn there, because naturally the earliest scan almost always has the worst quality.

Started buying the volumes from the beginning after that.

Whoaa.. I didn't expect to see Stephen answering this thread. To me, he will always be the godfather of one piece world.
I used his translation to understand what happens on every panels of Jojo-Hot's scans.
I have to say that what hooked me up so deeply with One Piece is Stephen's amazing translation. Since he also considering the context of the story and japanese culture, his translations really took you to another level of understanding. Back then,those translations were released as txt files.

The saddest moment came whenever Stephen periodically stopped posting his translations because some scanlation groups used them without his authorization..
To me, people like him are the reason why One Piece could have such a global appeal like now..

Hey all, i think this is my first post on the forums, i've been a OP fan for quite some time. I joined the forums in 2006 but have started with OP a bit before that i think. I don't exactly remember the chapter/anime episode but at one point i started watching the subbed anime episodes from kaizoku fansubs (god bless them if they are still there), i watched the fansubs up until the end of alabasta i think, then tired of waiting for the episodes and started reading the manga translations and some time after i read everything that was translated up to that point, some time after that i joined the forums for my regular fix of spoilers

So i guess somewhere between 2004-2006 was when i started (to whatever chapter/episode range that matches)
