Am I the only one who has been noticing this? The latest Nami clone being Scarlet.
A lot of the new female characters post-timeskip look like Nami
-
-
Its not really that they all look like Nami per se, but that all the attractive women look similar.
IIRC Oda did say he was having a hard time trying making unique designs. He does look around to get inspiration for different designs like with Fukaboshi but readers complained about that the quality of character designs have deteriorated. I think its really inevitable that you start having some lookalikes, especially after 17 years for a weekly serialization.
-
yeah it does. makes me wonder about nami's past or that oda is just getting predictable on his female drawings
-
Al!inaJames made a great post about the female character designs in One Piece, especially post-time-skip, part of which includes the fact that many attractive female characters have similar body designs to Nami.
Read it all here.

A lot of gives I don't fuck!!!
Ah, I miss the Guess The Face! thread. That was a lot of fun.
-
In Scarlet's defense, she's the mother of Rebecca who herself resembles Nami an awful lot. So between Scarlet and Rebecca it can be excused as genetic. An easier pass in this case.
-
Did you stop reading One Piece for the last five years?
-
The plot twist will be that they and Nami are all descended from some proto-Nami goddess and will pull some Princesses of Heart mumbo jumbo.
-
It was very noticeable after the timeskip, but I'd have to say that this will probably continue to the end. In my personal opinion, it's for sex appeal to get more male readers, given that it is a shonen manga. I don't mind it :)
-
They'd be a lot sexier if they had torsos instead of boobs connected to hips with sticks… :getlost:
Anyway I'm not too sure if this thread is gonna live too long. It's been discussed to death in sexism thread which got locked already.

Hell yeah. Never did like thin girls with big boobs that much.
-
Not sure if this thread that is going anywhere.

In short, yeah, a lot of people have been noticing this, for some it's at the top of their complaints about One Piece.

Oda is paying homage to Toriyama's sensei works, surely.

If he really wanted to pay homage to Toriyama, he would have everybody wear baggy pants. :ninja:

Is this really a big deal? I rather see Nami look alikes than Robin's. Robin is the prettiest. :)

robin is simply a clone Hancock with an ugly nose.
Nami the most beautiful girl in OP, so all the beautiful girls look like her. -

I just wish Oda would experiment with different kind of faces more. He took a risk with Perona and she turned out pretty. If he just tried to create more Peronas…
! No, not those owl eyes but more unique features like that…
-
I know people often call it Namiface, but technically…..didn't Makino and Kuina appear before her, sporting the classic OP female look?

Nami gets a lot more panels. Not like you're forbidden from calling it Makinoface or Kuinaface. See if it catches on.

Pretty much the reason. "Kuinaface"…...hmm.
-
That's it, Kuinaface will be :ninja:…
But seriously, seeing Al!na's post I think I understood why I like Marigold's design so much. She turns out to be only beautiful fat woman in OP, never realized it...
Now that I think about it, Oda is so careful when he thinks about his readers, you can see it in every chapter that he really worries about what he is showing the kids. I wish he thought about the little big girls reading this manga as well and gave them more examples that being fat doesn't necessarily mean being ugly.
-
How about the 3 eyed chick in BM's crew? I think she's more Caimie than Nami.
-
I think Scarlett looks like Veronica Maggio but thats probably just me. For the Record Maggio looks exactly like me aswell. Ive had people come up to me and ask if im her twin brother <.<

What unique features does Perona have except for her eyes? Her nose, mouth, facial shape, hourglass figure etc. is the same as the other girls.
Though otherwise, I agree. I feel Oda actually did try to give Sharley and Otohime somewhat unique designs (IIRC, Otohime was in the spoiler for the chapter in which she appeared referred to "not pretty, but not ugly" or something), so it's not like he lost his touch after Amazon Lily. So I don't get why Rebecca and Scarlet have to be Nami clones.
I know people often call it Namiface, but technically…..didn't Makino and Kuina appear before her, sporting the classic OP female look?
Nami did appear before any of them in the color spread for the first chapter. :p Maybe it's because there seems to be a tendency that light-haired women look more like Nami, and dark-haired women look more Robin. And Makino and Kuina are/were dark-haired, after all…
-
robin is simply a clone Hancock with an ugly nose.
Nami the most beautiful girl in OP, so all the beautiful girls look like her.Yeah because Hancock appeared first and Robin appeared years later, soo Robin is the clon and no the other way around.
-
There is nothing wrong with robins nose. Also, robin is hotter than Nami! Pre-TS robin and shakky are the sexiest gals in OP imo
-

I'm talking about post-timeskip robin, and she is became a clone Hancock with an ugly nose.

Lolno. Nami is hotter than robin.
-
Oda made a big point of experimenting with female designs on Amazon Lilly. Showed that he can totally have them loaded with variety… but they don't look so attractive. So....
I know people often call it Namiface, but technically…..didn't Makino and Kuina appear before her, sporting the classic OP female look?
Nami was in the opening spread. So no, the others in their two or three panels did not come before her.
-

Would you stop calling her nose ugly, stop spreading lies. Her looking a bit unperfect is what makes her so perfect.
Do we need more Silk or Anne, the proto-nami, in OP?
Many people complaining about thin waists never have actually paid attention while reading the series.
-
-
I don't really mind, so long as they're distinguishable and have distinct personalities.
It's interesting though, beacause I've read a couple of interviews with male mangaka (Obata, Inoue) and a lot of them openly state they have a more difficult time coming up with unique female designs. Obata explicitly stated every time he tries to draw an attractive female off the top of his head, they all look the same with slightly different hair.
So I think it's not necessarily a One Piece problem but a problem of an artist being constricted by one's own idea of attractiveness, because I'm sure most mangaka's heroines are their version of ideal beauty. When they draw their own sex I'm sure they're not nearly as worried about attractiveness because the thought simply does not enter their mind.

I love Sanji's reaction in the last panel. He looks like his dreams came true.
-
Robin has a sharp nose, I think its a nice defining feature, dosent make her ugly at all.
I really liked monet's design, Koala is cute as shit.
Baby5 and Viola do look the same, Rebecca is meh

Isn't Rebecca just a normal sized Shirahoshi? That's how I see it.

Not enough blushing to be Shirahoshi.

Thank you Al!naJames for this post.
Oda should stop his "attracting new male readers" BS or learn how to draw women.
I mean.. REALLY? After all the success that One Piece's been facing in Japan and, yet, he wants to draw characters that look like Nami.
MAN.. at least change the size of the breasts and make different hair-styles.With this plot, other Mangas can win easily.
-
It was just as bad before the timeskip, really. I remember having trouble telling Nami apart from Kaya and being thankful that Vivi had long hair so that I wouldn't mistake her for Nami. Actually, before Miss Monday and Robin every girl had the very same face. And this isn't only about OP. In Wanted!, all of Oda's women look almost identical.
This isn't even about sexism anymore. The main problem is that it's confusing as hell: even now, Robin has an uncanny resemblance to Hancock (and so does Tashigi), while Nami, Rebecca and Scarlet look as if they were twins. There are similarities between men as well, but they've got more sub-types of body, face and even hair. Koala, Keimi and Shakky are the only three women (not gonna talk about Sugar because she looks too young) with short-medium length hair shown after the timeskip. The subtle changes in design (Viola's lips, Acilia being slightly prettier than most fat women) don't count for much if Oda takes away from something else that could give a female character an unique look. -
The title should be changed to "A lot of Female characters in one piece look like Nami".

I like your avatar pic with Nami wearing a helmet.

The waists and the face variance bother me more than anything. There's less female characters in OP, but the dudes have a pretty similar bodytype generally. As of late, Zoro, Luffy, Sanji and Usopp look almost exactly the same below the neck if you ignore clothes. The ridiculousness of the female characters is exemplified and doesn't really fit Oda's general style of slight exageration. Basically, old Nami looked fine, and if he just went with varied breast size and got into some face varience (after going back to old, slightly realistic waists), I think the issue would be waaaaaaaaaaay less pronounced.
But yeah, the problem has been eternal, and gradually gotten worse because I think the female characters are drawn in a more outlandish fashion that the problem seems more egregious than it actually is.
The body variance isn't the problem, so much as it's the style, faces, and sample size.

Could people please stop posting images of old Robin? It is already hard enough trying to accept her new design by itself without having to be reminded of how much better and unique and nicorobinish she looked before.
God damn it, I will never get over her new design… it is probably the only thing that I would change in OP. Lots of things displeased me so far, but I never thought "Oda shouldn't have done this". I know that even things I dislike have a reason to be done like that and only Oda, being the writer, know if this or that could be done in other way or not. Everything. But Robin's new design.
And things just got worse when Oda got the terrible idea of showing the sketches of her other possible looks. One of those was so perfect that I feel heartbroken every time I think about it (the Tilda Swinton one).
