All the average Brit knows about Florida is Miami and Disneyland. Lots of Citrus fruit are also given Florida branding so it feeds into that 'tropical paradise' image.

… besides spiders can be found nearly everywhere. I don't know of any region/nation that doesn't have spider (maybe a few isolated islands may be spider free.)

Don't forget the tv shows. There is CSI:Miami, it makes it look wonderful. Even when they go into the eEverglades… they often state how dangerous the glades are but they show the more lush areas and not (or rarely show) regions like what Monkey King showed.

You get down far enough and you get some almost tropical stuff yeah, but most of the thing looks like that picture I posted. And my Florida experience was pretty south too, Cape Coral mostly (also drove from there to Tampa then Orlando).
To make matters worse, I lived in Savannah for five years, and even there I could tell the landscape was transitioning to Florida butt swamp, that far from the northern border.

We did a two week round trip from Orlando to the Keys, to the Everglades, Miami Beach and along the shore back to Orlando.

When you've never seen a swamp before it's kind of neat! Especially when you ride one of those airboats when the weather is ungodly hot. >_>

It used to be a big swamp centuries ago, but a lot of it has either been depleted or turned into raw material that is so specific to our country that it doesn't have an English Wikipedia page. We're still flat though! Meadows and forests and nothing else when you move outside of the cities.

I've never been to either of them. I also got them mixed up for a long time, I knew they were separate but didn't know which was in Cali and in Florida.

I went to Disneyland when I was 11. All I remember is Goofy groping my mom and Pluto's hotdog hut smelling weird. I don't have an urge to go to Florida. So I'll probably never go to Disney World.

One of the greatest experiences to have at Disney World is to take a behind-the-scenes tour; especially if you're able to sort of compartmentalize things enough to be able to keep your sense of the magic and wonder even after seeing what goes into the sausage, as it were. It really is just incredibly interesting to be able to see things stripped down, and see just how much thought and effort has gone into making it the experience it is.
