I also separate certain students who are friends and I know are likely to talk to each other when they aren't supposed to.
Thank goodness my school's teachers didn't do that.
If someone was too noisy they'd just be sent outside for 5 mins, or the teacher would suddenly pause and be silent until the awkwardness crept towards the person talking.
Then they'd see all eyes toward them, and the teacher looking at them like "…are we shutting up now?". Then the lesson would continue.
Friends are one of the only factors that made school bearable. This includes being able to talk to each other and work with each other during lessons (when class is engaged as normal of course, not when the teacher is speaking).
I'm sure the teachers were aware of that, which is why it never crossed their minds to forcibly separate students.
Heck, for the most part we sat wherever we wanted. Everyone had their own cliques within the class, and wherever the first person staked a claim for a seat, the rest of the group would join them at that table.

You'd be trashing these words in three seconds the moment you're in charge of a classroom lollll.

Outerspec and like every teacher on earth does all these things. When there's particularly chatty trouble spots of two or more kids who can't focus no matter what, splitting them across the room is the absolute best idea.
Friends are one of the only factors that made school bearable.
lol its just their desks in the room. They aren't isolated from their friends for all time, and hey they can interact with their other classmates at the table.

We're talking completely dysfunctional pairings, bad chemistry that constantly causes problems and also annoys the other kids because whichever two kids in question are derailing everything.
Heck, for the most part we sat wherever we wanted.
So did you have class in class? Or what.

Of course, that's a no brainer lol
I know all about those kinds of students.
The main reason I had to re-take my Maths exams was because our Math class never learned anything due to the same bad eggs disrupting the entire lesson.
Upon being able to re-take it in 6th form college, the improved learning environment of students who actually wanted to focus got me almost perfect scores on those same papers lol
My post was mostly a knee jerk reaction in defense of friends being together in general, since Outerspec's post seemed a bit more generalized than intended.
At least, through my eyes. Which are sleep deprived as all hell.
For context I teach 5th grade math. I do P.E. too but that's besides the point. When I say I'm separating students who are likely to talk to one another I'm talking about students who are likely to talk about anything but math. Distractions to one another. They're not helping each other out on class work or activities but rather talking about DC and Marvel superheroes, card games, and minecraft. And this is found out through experience teaching them in the classroom where they have sat next to one another before and have proven to be distractions in the past. That's how they get separated in the first place lol.
Trust me, their learning environment isn't hampered by them focusing and concentrating on their own work rather than on what their friend did over the weekend. Besides, they see each other enough in school. In P.E. In recess. Breaks in between classes. At lunch. During group activities. After school/aftercare. Etc…
Do I stare and look at them until they're quiet? Yes, I do that in P.E. (giving instructions) They hate when P.E. time is wasted. Not the same for math.
5th Grade is rough man, imo one of the hardest grades to teach.
Though that depends a bit on the school. They're tougher if they're the oldest grade in the building. Since they're the kings and queens of the school. But if 6th grade is in with them they're more demure.
In class I tell my kids to "be quiet". Such are the class rules while we're going over the activity. I also separate certain students who are friends and I know are likely to talk to each other when they aren't supposed to.
Lol I must be violating all sorts of rights.
You joke, but I actually had students fight back at my directions/management by claiming constitutional rights. Like saying I couldn't quiet them down or enforce cellphone rules due to free speech.
It was actually pretty funny. Then again, mine were high schoolers, so at that age they're more into that sort of rebelliousness.
I always enjoy the various expressions of my Westerner friends when I talk about life in middle school here. Hell we get caned quite often. It happens every day! We even knew how to distinguish which rattan hurts the most. Thin ones are the burning pain sensation, thick ones are the seep through your bones kind of pain. The longest caning combo I witnessed was 20++ times in one go. Sometimes they throw your bag down the stairs and stuff. Sweet memories. Is it somehow illegal in the West?
That was why I was scratching my head when my Canadian friend told me that one of their teachers were fired for hitting a student with a ruler. :ninja:

There are US states where physical punishment is legal. With the exception of Colorado its basically exactly the states you'd expect.

Even with that chart it's not a universal. School policy can be defined as locally as county, so things that fly in one school may not in a school a couple of blocks away.
Mentioning mostly since I taught in Texas and corporal punishment was strictly forbidden in my school district. Heck, there were a million rules about what was proper behavior when it came to interacting with students.
Also, for good measure, I did middle school and high school in Florida, which is also red in that chart, and again, no corporal punishment.

Interesting. I found a world map one. Not sure whether it is outdated or not.
I know a bit about the Europe one… A Malaysian couple somehow got arrested for hitting their children in Sweden if I remember correctly.
I found it weird that it isn't legal to use corporal punishment in schools in China tho.

I taught P.E. at a previous school where 5th grade was in fact the highest grade at one point. Every year the school added a grade and I was there for 3 years so I knew those kids from 4th - 6th. They were indeed difficult. This was in D.C too so…yeah. It's funny when the oldest kids in the school, the "senior class", are about 10 years old and they think they're the mostly worldly kids in the world. I miss those little rugrats.
The school I teach at now have 5th and 6th in the same classroom but there are four 6th graders compared to like fourteen 5th graders. They're in every class together except math but it doesn't even matter behavior wise. The 6th graders don't do a good job of setting a good example except for one girl but that's going off on a tangent. I just can't wait for next year when the 5th graders move up and become the new (big) 6th grade class and maybe their hopefully gained maturity will rub off on their younger peers.
You joke, but I actually had students fight back at my directions/management by claiming constitutional rights. Like saying I couldn't quiet them down or enforce cellphone rules due to free speech.

I teach P.E. on the High School level and I've had to confiscate so many phones it's a bit ridiculous. But, wow, I've never had anyone claim constitutional rights violations when I took away their cell. It's mostly excuses about 'My mom/dad texted and/or called me'.
Actually, I just recalled my younger students in P.E. (I do physical ed for K-12) have complained about free speech but they were joking when they did it. Well, mostly joking.

Well, it goes without saying many schools don't allow that type of physical punishment which is good, but you also have to define what "physical punishment" is at it differs from school to school. For example the D.C. school I worked at for 3 years forbid all types of physical punishment including exercise to correct behavior. In other words, we couldn't make a student do an exercise like run a lap as a consequence for misbehaving or anything. The school I work at now has the option of offering exercise as a consequence for misbehavior as appropriate to what to what they did. Running in the hallways constantly and told more than once to stop? Take a lap around the field. Stuff like that.

I loved my 5th grade teacher. She was a lovely person. EXCEPT she made us read Where the Red Fern Grows out loud in class. I will never forgive her for that.

I can never expect that being suggested in Mass. without all the parents putting up a storm.
I remember corporal punishmen was allowed but had clearly defined rules (well clear for adults not of the kids but then kids will play dumb (speaking of self and friends back then)lol) in most of the school districts (about 3 different ones in the Carrolton/Farmers Branch area) I went . Texas allowed it -within reason. Of course no caning, also no slapping hand with ruler but paddle could be used in certain situation IF parents had signed a consent form. (but again, that was in the 80s)
I do remember most kids thinking that school authorities could not get physical with the students - such as holding down a fighting student. At one point I was attending a special needs type of schooling (it had less than 20-30 students there at a time.) It was mostly for juvienilles with behavioral problems - missing school, minor criminal behavior, and violent fighting ect, It was able to adjust classes to fit students needs.
I had missed a month being sick so went there to try to pass the year. I just needed 3 more credits to pass so took reading in morn, had PE, then … think it was math? (I hate math) in evening. While there I saw the staff had to deal with the violent kids several times. More than once, one kid would end up having been wrestled to the ground and was held there in a hold until they calmed down.
I had thought that it was illegal so was shocked at it. But later found out it is/was (again that was decades ago) illegal in regular school setting but was allowed in that special needs extension due to the violent behavior.
I got a spanking from a teacher in a religious kindergarten type school I think but I think corporal punishment was banned pretty soon after that. I thought it was banned statewide honestly, and like 75% of my friends are Texas teachers and I've never heard of them issuing corporal punishment. Like… Today it's just unheard of afaik
Not surprised on that, While allowed when I was in school, it was still rare. It was more of detentions, being sent home. That would count as absenteeism (which was bad if there was too many it could hold the kid back) or for worse offences, suspension.
The seeing sent home one got some abuse - from both sides. Teachers could send kids home for a variety of things. Some made sense some not. Most often it was a ambiguous dress code. Some things flew by, others didn't.
Heck as a teen I knew that I would be sent home from High school for having my jeans ripped horizontally on the upper thigh, knee ripped out could pass by some teachers but no the upper thigh. Want to play hooky? Just wear the ripped jeans and you will be sent home to change. No guarantee that the student would return to school after changing though.
Some made sense only after hearing about the details, some will always remain up for debate.
I remember one girl from the same high school as I went to being suspended (not sent home for the day, but full out suspended for that term) because she had a Mohawk. Teacher said it was distracting and against dress code. It made the news as it turns out there wasn't a rule in the dress code against mohawks. I remember seeing them when I was at school and teachers didn't throw a fit. Turns out why this teacher made the fit was because the Mohawk in question stood nearly 6 in high ..and was purple. There was a rule in the dress code that hair had to natural colors, so yeah it was against dress code.
quietly strolling down memory lane… what... how did I get here???
That's one of the things I always aimed to resist from administration. Like having ways to have students hide being against dress code to make sure they wouldn't get sent home, mostly because it can be a pretty fucked up rule in some places.
For example, if you have kids who only can afford the one uniform and it gets ripped for whatever reason, it's bullshit for them to get sent home for having ripped clothes when they still made the effort to go to school.
That's more understandable.
Usually from what I saw in my high school (which was public, in the poorer area and had no official uniform) was that tattered (worn from use) clothing would get more of a pass than the fashion-rips (purposely ruining those "perfectly good jeans, young lady!") would get. Before brand names would market the ripped look, back in 70s/80s we would create the look on purpose. If we cut out the knee, it was okay (though some teachers may sneer at it) but to create the cut on the upper thigh was a no-go (they claim its too close to the crotch.. even if it was mid-thigh and same height as some skirts).

Wait, really, Vanilla Ice's original name was 'Van Winkle'? That's such an awesome name, why in the world would anyone ever change that?
Corporal punishment sucks. They say they do it out of love but all it does is instill fear. You'll grow up avoiding bad things not because of rational thought but because of fear of retribution. It's kinda a horrible feeling.
@Panda:

That is definitely not an awesome name, let alone in the context of hip-hop.
It's almost a good Hard Rock name, but there is in no context on earth a realm where "Winkle" is cool.
When you say "Van Winkle" the very first thing anyone thinks of is "Rip Van Winkle", which translates to "really old guy." Yeah, not gonna work as a rap name.
. . . . . I dunno, it could work as a Heavy Metal name.
Wait, there really are people with the name Van Winkle? I thought that was some goofy fictional name.
Of course, that it's Vanilla Ice's real name makes way too much sense.
Go Winkle! Go Winkle! Go!
「Van Winkle」 and his stand 「The Rip」

Nothing rhymes with Winkle.
tinkle, twinkle, wrinkle, bullwinkle, garfinkle, sprinkel …
Yeah Van Winkle would do good as a heavy metal name … but remembering Vanilla Ice's performances it makes me glad he changed his name and was in rap.
. . . . . . it had to happen eventually.
No joke, I actually used to be in a metal band called Van Winkle.

This post you seem to have made to prove your innocence as not being not untrustworthy with info and sources and whatnot.
But I'll be tldr before the rest: You've just made one of the biggest backfire posts I've seen on AP. :/
Do you just google random links and use them when it fits what you need? I mean seriously.
I was arguing with someone on another site recently who had the same problem you do. A complete zero ability to process information, and seeming blindness to telling what a trustworthy source is and what isn't.
He was some islamophobic Portuguese guy who was in part trying to demonize Islam as always trying to murder Christians and Jews. The key there being Jews.
In his pursuit to prove his points he quickly was cluelessly citing literal Neo-Nazi websites.
And I thought to myself, "Damn that's bad, at least SmokerSan hasn't done that yet".

Find the email on a trustworthy site if you believe it to be un-altered, un-tweaked, and for real.
This should be a cinch if that is the case, so much so that you shouldn't complain about the request.

But once again, i'd have to say that what is written in the mail, and what you are selling does not quite match. As far as i can tell the mail talks about how since the conflict and bloodshed is already brewing in Syria, and is not going to go away in the near future, the US should start to rally for local support and provide assistance via airstrikes to help the Syrian rebels. Which will also have the outlined additional strategic benefits of hampering their local opponents and helping their allies.
