Well, an easier answer for Mocha's case is "for plot purposes". I think you're overthinking things. The point now here is Robin is fairly effective against Trebol that will later develop to something else.

Well, Robins fruit gives her so much diversity that it is really pointless to talk about the countless possibilities she had to use her fruit efficiently. For example TB, she could subdue Moria right at the beginning but decided to wait.

I have just read the chapter 688 again and notice two things:

The size of the candy would have hidden 52% of Robin fanservice if she had worn it ! And she would run slower too…
The situation was almost under control when some "KUSO GAKI" appeared out of nowhere. And Mocha decides to eat the fruit in a few seconds, Robin could not do anything.

I think this chapter highlights how incredible of a marksman Yassop is because he was doing what Trebol did in the East Blue, maybe even better because ants are usually smaller than flies.

On Fishman Island it wasn't quite clear how her full clone version operates. Maybe it's a variety of teleporting where she can now 'bloom' from one place to another. If it's a flesh-puppet she certainly had the ability to prepare it ahead of time, both here and FI. She could have had her real body tucked somewhere out of sight, like Perona does, while she gives her full attention to the clone.
Whichever one, it was great to see her take charge and set things in motion.

Usopp's return to excuse-ridden coward was… nowhere near as palatable.

They don't work how? Running, walking? Did you remember Skypiea? She used legs in the back of Zoro, Wiper and Gan Fall to make them move to other location. If she makes an entire clone, than the clone has legs as well, and so it can move. What of it doesn't work this way?

Also it seems that secret behind Trebols speed in moving from one place to another is fact that he shoots himself from one place to another using stickyness of his Devil Fruit and doing move a bit like gomu gomu no rocket.

Or is it only me that sees some panels from this chapter like that?

in the clone case,the entire clone is the "flower",but if it walks,it can't be rooted to anything,so it should desappear..that's how robin's power has worked until now,but now suddenly does not.

Well my small summary… Loved this chapter even if I still hoped for some Sanji team... But still overall lovely chapter.

Sugar, as I predicted, is way stronger people though (Hell even she maed the comment about people understimating her)...

But now to Trebol ... He is a freaking beast, Robin did say it and was smart enough to run the fuck away... under normal circumstances I can't see Robin even with Usopp winning against Trebol...

So how will be Trebol beaten? My thoughts

Either it will be a teamwork of Robin + Uospp + dwarves + absolute stupidity of Trebol.. But my problem… as I said above Sugar, who is strong on her own has to be fight as well... And I doubt the team is enough to do it somehow.
People as Don Chinjao and Hakuba will break the spell or freed with Sugar being taken out first and will beat the shit out of Trebol as revenge… For me the most likely case
Sanji will SkyWalk his way back… But very very unlikely

No, that was how it worked before the timeskip, before the 2 years of training with the revolutionaries. She never did something like a clone before and only sprouted members where the point of connection, with the surface, was the end of the member(Ex: foot -> Beginning of Legs. hand -> Beginning of arms). With a clone it doesn't exist such a thing, given that all members are connected with other members and not any surface.
If the ability could be improved or not we never knew, but that was strongly hinted after the timeskip, I don't understand why she walking is so shocking.

You can call it bad storytelling if you want to, but I believe that there are times when you must intentionally downplay a character's portrayal for plot reasons in order to not make things "easily resolved."

You understand that the flower is just the thing at the top of the plant right? Do you know that Grass has flowers as well but Grass isn't a flower. But that doesn't really matter.
Robin power always was represented as flowers petals scattering and blossoming. Not taking roots. So is very possible that she wouldn't need a surface as a medium. Since the clone appearance it was always a possibility for that to be true. It seems that it is, but her new skills weren't explained yet. So just wait.

Wait, I don't get the problem with Robin's usage of her fruit this chapter. I don't see anything wrong here considering she's always sprouting herself out of something. FI she couldn't move because she didn't sprout any legs for her body.

Anyway, good chapter for Robin overall. She really hasn't had much to do action-wise except for minor fights, this chapter showed her ability and intelligence nicely.

even the part under the "flower" is still part of the flower,it's called stem in english if i remember well.
also,even if you consider only the part on the top,it still needs to be connected to the rest of the "plant" to live..so the problem is the same.
also,you are ignoring the fact that robin itself back in alabasta explained her power as being "able to make part of his body "blossom without limits"
you have to blossom from somewhere..if she wouldn't need a "medium",she would be able to make appear limbs out of thin air and slap people with them.She never does that,because her flowers have to blossom from something…you can just ignore a decade of manga just to let an error slip by

You limited yourself to solids. Do you know that flowers can blossom in water a liquid. If it can blossom from Something why isn't air included?
And as I said in a previous post she couldn't really do a perfect clone, because the edges of her members connected to the surface, were always edges connecting to other parts of her body. So the Sole of her foot couldn't be the thing connecting to the surface.

I think how Robins ability woks is, she sprouts\blossoms limbs from any object and uptill this point she only masterd creating body parts still connected to where the grew from. Now, I think she always had the ability to grow a whole body independently moving unattached to the object it grew from because she only needs the object to grow the body\body part, thats it, just to grow them and uptill now she's been using the objects she grew her body parts from as leverage to anchor and\or for support and stability.

Because for a decade of manga chapters, sprouting member out of thin air would make them fall on the ground, they can not levitate. Now she can do it since it is a whole body moving on its own.

But let's assume that the feet of the newly created body were rooted on the floor. She is a flower, so she can easily "pick" herself and start wondering around. The roots of a flower are rarely deep.

Uh, I think she just could've sprouted a complete body clone(we didn't really see it on-screen from what I gathered). We saw her do it in FI, but in this case she could've just sprouted it from the ground, including her legs as well, a complete body. Actually, I don't see a problem with her theoretically being able to sprout out of thin air either, the arm just would be useless in that case, though because it's not attached to anything.

So it seems that Trebol always shoot himself in a straight line at a very high speed, and then falls down (if you will) at his destination.
And I have to agree with a lot of people here that Usopp is being quite annoying. I would almost say he is worse than before. Obviously he will come around and achieve great things in this arc, but personally I'd like to see him more confident.

I don't recall Robin ever saying she had to be "rooted" in oder for her body parts\body to survive, just because in the past it 'looked' as if that was its limited (and so we interpreted it as such) does not at all mean that it was truely a limit until explicitly said. For example, just because sanji only used brute force for potency in his kicks doesnt mean a 'rule' has been broken when he started using diable jamble. I'm not saying it was wrong to assume to know Robins limit, most of us made that assumption, but we where wrong accept it and Robin\Oda has said nothing I'm aware of to contradict that in the past. If anyone could reference a panel where she made such a claim please do . . .
