My picks for who should win are in BOLD and who I think they're going to pick are in ITALICS and UNDERLINED. Admittedly I have not seen every single movie nominated and I left out the less popular categories, not because they're less important but because I haven't seen the movies in those categories. I'd really like it if Wolf of Wall Street wins. It'd probably go to Twelve Years a Slave because it's the sort of movie the Academy loves. As long as it doesn't go to Gravity or American Hustle, I guess that's fine though I personally feel all three are overrated.

I really, really want Leo to win. Dude deserves an Oscar after years of cockblocking.

I think by now, we all know what the Academy does and doesn't like. It likes things like 12 Years a Slave, and doesn't like The Wolf of Wall Street. I know many people love it, but I don't think it's going to win anything. Chiwetel Ejiofor for Best Actor is also a no brainer.

And yeah, truth be told I haven't seen any of these movies either…

12 Years a Slave should win everything

Maybe throw DiCaprio a Lifetime Achievement Award or something

Gravity and Wolf of Wall Street were my favourites, with Her close behind it.

I went last night and watched the collection of animated shorts.

                        a) It's a damn crime that The Missing Scarf didn't get a nomination.
                        b) Anything other than Room on the Broom winning will be a miscarriage of justice.

                        Complicating things since 2009.

Of the best picture films, I've only seen Gravity and Captain Phillips. I prefer Gravity. Really want to see 12 Years a Slave though.

And I'm gonna try to see The Wind Rises, after which I'll decide whether I want that or Frozen to win (of course, I think Monster's University was better than Frozen)

I'll see you on the dark side of the moon]

I've been in many back and forths with friends about The Wind Rises and been pretty open to being convinced otherwise with another viewing, but as it stands I can't say I enjoyed it much.

I've only seen Wolf and Hustle, but found a theater nearby still doing Gravity so will likely check it out.

! Best Foreign Film (Unfortunately I have not seen any of the movies in this category) 😞
                              Denmark, The Hunt
                              Belgium, The Broken Circle Breakdown
                              Italy, The Great Beauty

                              Palestine, Omar
                              Cambodia, The Missing Picture
! Best Documentary Feature (Same for foreign films) 20 Feet from Stardom
                              The Act of Killing
                              Dirty Wars
                              The Square
                              Cutie and the Boxer
                              ! Best Animated Feature
                              The Wind Rises
                              Frozen
                              Despicable Me 2
                              The Croods
                              Ernest & Celestine

Truth be told, the foreign film category fits my tastes a lot more than the best picture category. I find Broken Circle Breakdown, Hunt and Great Beauty to be better movies than most nominated in best picture, especially titles like American Hustle, Gravity, Wolf or Philomena.

I like Leo and I liked Wolf of Wall Street, but this isn't his year. Maybe they'll throw him a bone but it wouldn't be genuine.

As for The Wind Rises I'm going to see that tomorrow.

                                Everything's Eventual…

Sadly, I've only seen Captain Phillips and Dallas Buyer's Club. So….I guess, one of them?

Then again, I've heard nothing but acclaim for 12 Years a Slave. Gotta see that.

I imagine no one actually wants to see 12 Years a Slave as much as they want to know why it's so good, while also expecting to go through some serious white guilt and to wince at all the brutality. At least that's how it is in my case…

I've only seen American Hustle, Her, and Wolf of Wall Street this year. I saw Inside Llewyn Davis too, but it didn't wind up getting a nomination, which is weird.

American Hustle is my favorite of the ones I've seen. Just a really tight, fun movie. Wolf of Wall Street had one of the funniest scenes I've ever seen though, with those "lemons." Jonah Hill is the fucking man. Has anyone seen his overly talkative Jewish child bit that he does on SNL? Funnier than anything you've ever even THOUGHT OF.

Favorite thing aside from One Piece is movies! Updated favorite films: The Passion of Joan of Arc / Alien / It's a Wonderful Life / Casablanca / One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest / The Apartment / Nights of Cabiria / Dr. Strangelove / All About Eve / Amadeus / Man Who Shot Liberty Valance

Clearly I didn't watch many movies last year. Only one I've seen that got any sort of nomination was Frozen.

Inside Llewyn Davis was my favorite English film release from 2013 really so I can't even vaguely care about best picture since they decided there was no money in it awarding it anything lol. Really funny how the past few times they expanded Best Pictures noms by so much just to have half of it be throwaway entries.

Weird too, since rich film fucks love Coen Bros

I will legitimately be kind of upset though if Dallas Buyers Club wins any more awards for its awful drag queen character. I really don't want that stuff to be rewarded.

The only movie anyone has talked about I haven't seen is Her though, which is weird since I… love the concept...??

I just came from the movies and was in the middle of The Wind is Rising and really getting into it! Then the fire alarm goes off and the whole theatre is evacuated…From what I saw which I believe was probably most of it I can see why it was nominated. The animation is great, has lovable characters, engaging story, and it just makes you root for the main character. I wish I could finish it but that'll have to wait for another date. Still enjoyed Frozen better mainly because it came out of nowhere for me and I enjoyed immensely.

One film I feel like got legitimately snubbed of getting a nomination at all in some category is "Rush". Heck, Daniel Brühl for example would have really earned it for his portrayal of Niki Lauda. As an Austrian you see Lauda in TV quite often…and I couldn't really see much difference between the original and the actor.

Sucks that that happened! I had a similar experience when I went and saw that Mike Judge movie, Extract.

Saw that! Lauda was awesome in that.

I will legitimately be kind of upset though if Dallas Buyers Club wins any more awards for its awful drag queen character. I really don't want that stuff to be rewarded.

Is the character very stereotypical or something? Haven't seen it.

Clearly I didn't watch many movies last year. Only one I've seen that got any sort of nomination was Frozen.

Likewise, except replace Frozen with American Hustle. For that matter, I haven't even ever heard of a fair number of the movies on that list. So you certainly aren't alone, at any rate.

Yeeeeah, something like that. The character themselves is somewhere between being a drag queen and a transperson, but isn't really convincingly either. It's more like a label slapped on the character, who is basically portrayed and acted in this way that's just… more like pity with a hint of disgust? The actor himself who played them also has basically said they're just a weird, exotic thing played up for tragedy so the main character can be sad. They entirely lack agency, basically.

On that note, the movie itself has a really bad savior complex and follows this super generic underdog arc. It's just not a unique, interesting, or good movie in any real capacity although some moments in its directing have inspiration that puts it a tad bit further away than just "Hollywood".

Well, when I said the Oscars like things like 12 Years a Slave, I meant they like movies about human suffering and overcoming it. That's proven by their love of Holocaust movies. Captain Phillips doesn't seem to be anywhere near the level of suffering of slavery or the Holocaust. Just guessing here again, but I would bet on either Jared Leto or Michael Fassbender. But who knows? Maybe he will win. That award seems like more of a tossup than a lot of the others.

'Oh go see this movie it's really great and you'll love it.' It is a great movie but be prepared for some very harsh and disgusting reality. This is how slavery really was. I don't mean to turn people away from it. I just want people to go in prepared so they're not too shocked, but you will be shocked. You'll feel a lot of things by the time you're finished, and hopefully one of those feelings will be inspiration to care for your fellow man.

They just look so interesting and I feel like I'm missing out on so many great stories. Not enough time in the world to read all the books and watch all the movies..

Best animated feauture film goes to…FROZEN!!!

So I haven't found any sites streaming, because quite frankly, I'm not that all that interested. The only award award I was waiting for was Best Supporting Actor. Can anyone paraphrase Jared Leto's acceptance speech? I'm curious to know if a certain someone's conversation with him had any impact on him or not.

He thanked his mom after telling how she struggled as a single mom raising 2 children. Then he thanked his brother and people who helped on the film. Lastly he dedicated the award to the 36 million AIDS victims and LGBT community. This acceptance speech is the only thing I know Jared Leto from so yeah…haven't seen the movie yet.
