Ive been thinking of starting another Anime series and would love to start up on DBZ. Was wondering which boxsets would be best? I understand the DBZ Kai is closer to the manga, then again the orange boxsets are the ones I used to watch on toonami years ago.

Start with kai it cuts out the filler and the voice acting is excellent.

Not sure this is the right place for this sort of question, but eh.
Go with Kai. Because with Kai you don't have to sit through stuff like this. (The left side of this splitscreen is the Japanese DVDs. The right side is the orange bricks. The previous frame is LITERALLY bleeding through the outlines. A side-effect of FUNi's so-called remastering being given literally zero care and effort whatsoever.) Also if you literally want the exact dub you watched on Toonami years ago, you'd need to track down the long-since out-of-print single DVDs FUNi put out years ago, since they made several adjustments to the dub for the orange bricks, which have carried over into every release since. Then there's the fact that with the English dub of Z… well the script is not terribly faithful to the original, let's say. Kai isn't just closer to the manga in that it has less filler, but also in that the dub's dialogue is far more true to the Japanese script. -

Yes you should watch the series, however, I would start with Dragon Ball as that begins the story of Goku. I personally bought all the season boxsets (orange) as Kai wasn't released yet, but Kai is definitely better if you want it done faster, and is more true to the source material.
Plus you can get bluray of Kai, if you care.

So with Kai you'll get awesome acting as stated, and no filler.
but you won't get the last Saga either. They didn't produce the last saga for Kai, not to say they won't though, it's entirely possible they MIGHT finish it. but thats how it stands. If you've never seen it then when you finish kai you could very well wait for them to maybe produce it, or just get the seasons sets with the third saga on it. at this point theres no shortage of ways to watch this stupid show lol

The Buu Saga has already been confirmed as being worked on, so yeah, Kai is the way to go.
