How do I convince people to watch subs?

I have this fan club for One Piece on another site and it has quite a few members who don't want to seem to watch the subs on K-F. I ask them "What version do you watch, English or Japanese?" They say English version then I tell them "PLEASE, Google the word Kaizoku and then download the episodes there (I tell them to Google the word since it's against forum rules to post Torrent links). Then they never respond if they will or not. Should I actually break the rules and post a link to K-F and give them EXPLICIT instructions of what to do? Or should I just hear their reasoning to why they watch the crappy dub with it's episode merging and cutting and bad voice acting.

I mean, you can tell one guy watches the dub because he broke my rules and posted the lyrics to the crap er… rap theme song.

The subs are out there, available for anyone who looks. Once you've let them know this, it's up to them whether they want to go download them.

I got into OP with the Viz manga. I'd heard it was a good series, so I ordered it to help fill up a Viz order (their base shipping/handling charge is really high, so I try to order as much at once as I can). I enjoyed it enough to order vol. 2 the next time I did a Viz order. When it came in, I got in the car and found a comic shop and picked up the next 4 volumes. I was hooked.

When I saw that Cartoon Network was going to show the series, I was intrigued. I don't like dubbed anime as a rule, and I'd heard the dub was bad, but I decided to give it a try. My poor TV was made sad that night, as I shouted at it in fury. I'd caught episode 1, and the first words I screamed were, "Why the hell did they give a 17 year old the voice of a 10 year old???"

I still can't sit through a full episode of the dub. Luffy's voice makes me cringe. The changes are jarring. It's too painful to see.

Anyway, I decided to try the internet, see if maybe I could find fansubs. I wasn't holding out much hope, since it was licensed, but I felt compelled to try and erase the horrible memories that the dub had carved into my brain. It took very little time to find the subs, a few days to figure out how bittorrent worked, a few more days to get my WMP to play them (I'm not very computer savvy or patient), and now I am a happy OP addict.

The scars are still there, though. That damn rap theme gets stuck in my head sometimes…. (jabs fork in ears....)

My suggestion is, let people know what they're missing, let them know the sub is out there, and leave it at that.

Just show them arlong park and there 4kids edits, also since most of them are proboly badass fanboys, (I.E Sanji, Zoro maybe Luffy) show them how much cooler they are in the original then they are and how the voices fit them better and you should have them maybe a little convinced

I'd go with Rice-a-roni on this. I think that the best way to show how awesome One Piece is showing how edited the dubs are. You might also want to meet up at a different place and talk about KF subs or by PM (if thats possible). What about online manga as well? Plus it doesn't have fillers in either so that'd be a relief XD.

Well, BatDan, there's only so much you can do. If you've mentioned them, people know they're there and if they're curious, they'll check them out, but you can't force them to do anything and trying to is probably not going to make them want to watch it any more than they already do. Don't stress about it too much.

I'm not forcing them, but when they start saying things like "Solo" and "Big Blue" (Zoro and All Blue). I get worried that the fanbase in this country is a pile of crap.

I bet if I go to the General disscussion forum on that site and mention One Piece, they'll rip me to shreads. But if I mention Naruto or Bleach . . . I'm suddenly the toast of the fucking forums.

Hopefully when my show "Video Game Gurus" is proposed to a good network. I can talk to Al Kahn and negotiate some workings to make sure One Piece gets the proper treatment and not the "ARRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHH" it's getting now.

Well, telling people to google it up or linking a few sites isn't very convincing.. actually giving them the subbed episodes is like the only way. But it seems you don't know these people in real life so that's gotta be kinda hard lol. What you could do though, is up some yousendit links to clips of moments where the subs really outshines the dub, like when there's blood, some real guns, Bellemere getting whacked, etc.

Also, for those not familiar with anime, listening to japanese can be a real turn-off. I know this from experience in trying to get people into anime.. which I haven't been very succesful at. It's too much of a "culture shock" most of the time..

…that wouldn't by chance be me now would it? besides I never even broke the rules if it was me.

Also the people who think the US version is better have n ever obviously seen the Japanese version. So far IMO the US version is more of an action suspense kind of show where the Japanese version is like that but at times there is sendimental moments as well as funny as hell clips LOL. I love the Japanese version so much better...I wish 4Kids would just let things be and go on to continue turning gold into a stone with other shows.

I don't think you should get them to watch the sub if they watch the dubbed version and don't hate the series. As long as they are fans of the show then it's all good.

I'd only tell them to download the subs if they saw the dubbed and started a hate club for OP.

I think that if you tell someone about all the edits being made, then they'll listen to you. On this one place I go to, there's this girl that outright hates One Piece. I summed up all the edits in a nutshell, and she was like "Oh, I had no idea they'd done so much to One Piece..." so I offered to give her a link to KF. ^__^

Its like when you try to tell them that the dub sucks they bring up the "well why can a kid strech after eating fruit". Theres a lot of weird anime out there but this is one thats both weird/exciting/sad/and funny!

I'm slowly convincing my friends that its not bad, and with the help of a picture that Cosmic made of Usopp, I will make them see the light!

Tell them how shitty the dub is, and then tell them how much better the Japanese version is. It's worked for me twice so far.

Such a thing brought up, all series are weird as hell.

I'm trying to convince a friend who hates the dub to give the sub a chance, as well. It isn't working well so far, but I don't give up because I used to be the same way until I finally got on the internet and tried to read the manga (real stuff), which I loved.

Yeah I usually make them watch episode 115 of OP. Because Usopp is the most hated dubbed OP character and he's just so bad ass in the fight with Mss. Merry Christmas.

And that seems to work wonders!
