I noticed a few people here understand Japanese and a loooong time ago a friend of mine said he learned it off a site and it only took him a few months, I want to learn Japanese but im kinda lazy, so where did you learn it? (If I get replys like "School/College" im gonna cry).
Where did you learn Japanese?

School/College
(sorry, but it's true!)
-
There's no way anyone could learn to be fluent in Japanese in just a few months off a site. XD Maybe kindergarden level.
-
It's crock that he learned japanese from a website in a few months. Maybe he memorized some of those symbol-charts (not kanji but the other two) and picked up some basics, but not more. I also picked up some basics from a year of anime watching, but not nearly enough to understand a RAW once they into actual sentences. But if you want to have a go at it:

sorry to say but japanese school XD probably will study more in uni/college so i can become native level

Watching anime is good for obscure vocab building (I may not know yet how to describe my university timetable in Japanese, but at least I know the words for vampire, pirate and scurvy!), and maybe for getting used to listening to the language, but otherwise it's not a good way to learn Japanese. I find it funny that there is this misconception among some anime fans that they can learn the language just by watching their favorite shows.

I learned at school as an elective and learn from watching raw and subbed animation, reading japanese raw manga, especially One Piece.
-
I learned Japanese from watching anime. (Can understand quite a bit, not too much, though ^_^)

今私、日本語の授業を取っている。 じゃ、学校に取っているよ。
しかし日本語は大変ですが、楽しくて良いよ。 インタネットのクラスは特にダメだ!!
まあ、それは正しいと思う。。。でも頑張れw

I'm still in the VERY beginning stages, but I have a friend who is fluent, and he knows a lot of Japanese exchange students at our college. So, between their combined effort, another friend of mine and I are learning the basics.
I can tell it is going to be an uphill battle for me, though.
-
sighs Oh well so much for that.
-
learned some basics just by myself, from books and dictionaries, from my japanese friend, and from watching anime and reading manga…never had actual classes
-
I've read japanese about a year now, in like, a free time school. Really like it, don't remember so much now after the summer holiday though. Will start learning everything I've forgot sometime soon. :p

Parents / friends.
xD!
Well, let's say Mandarin. I know zero to none Mandarin when I came to the States but I hanged out with Mandarin speaking people every day. The end of two-three years, I can understand daily conversation. Though, I didn't really practice speaking in Mandarin, so my speech is still bad. (They spoke to me in Mandarin, I replied in English ^^; )
Watching Japanese drama, Anime or reading Manga would help you…
-
In the kindergarten XD
learned the general stuff there. the rest is self learned through talking, reading manga, watching anime and translating.
unfortunately i still talk like a kid(even though i'm 21 o_O) because i moved from nippon when i was 12/13 :P all the anime watching must take some of the blame, too. but i do talk proper japanese when i have to
-
1.5 years of japanese lessons before I quit ^^;; but well I've returned most of the knowledge to my sensei.
Now I learn from animes and such and I am planning to retake the lessons. Frankly, this is the best way to learn.
-
hmm well for me…um. Right now I am picking up words here and there from animes. But I do plan on taking lessons in the future. Real lessons.
I tried to learn spanish in high school, but that failed. Oh how that failed. lol I couldn't pick up spanish no matter how hard I tried. But honestly, I think I could pick up japanese. Probably because Japan is special to me. It gave me shows that made me laugh and cry and obsess.
