I think its ALL these factors and the fact that Toonami started 200 episodes in. How can anyone relate to what's happening if they barely know the characters?

I hope we get to the day that the Funimation dub has aired more epsidoes than 4kids on American Television. Slow and steady we are getting there.
-
I don't think the 4Kids/FUNimation issue really matters anyway. It's been so long and the differentiation with the dub isn't as big an issue as many fans have made it out to be. Keep in mind that back in the day the 4Kids dub actually did well on Toonami, it's not like it was totally dismissed. That and pretty much the 4Kids dub is largely unavailable, the very opposite of the uncut FUnimation dub which contains more seasons than the 4Kids dub.

People are not still holding the 4kids dub against the show. Only the fandom even remembers that exists. It's been almost a DECADE.
The show just LOOKS WEIRD, and its bright and crazily colored, and theres no getting around that.
It's not "cool" or "stylish" looking like most of the other stuff on the toonami block, it really doesn't fit in despite also being a shonen. It would feel more comfortable next to Inu Yasha or Adventure Time than it does with Bleach and Naruto. (For all that Naruto is dumb, it tried really hard to convince people it was serious early on.)
-
Yeah I'm going to agree with Robby on this one.
I asked one of my friends who watches Toonami why they skip One Piece, and they said they didn't like it because it "didn't seem cool" and the "cartoony look makes [him] want to punch the characters in the face". The biggest reason he enjoys other Toonami shows more (Bleach, Naruto, Soul Eater) is because the fights are much "cooler and badass".
I think it has to do with the feeling of One Piece in general with it being a more adventure-type anime than just a simple battle anime. Sure at first glance when there's a show with fight after fight it might be more exciting and thus draw in viewers, but there's nothing to get engrossed in as the whole thing develops. Thus the likely problem with a lot of Toonami fans is that in order to realize how good Toonami is they must first get over superficial reasons such as cartoony artstyle.
There was even a time when I personally thought One Piece was too weird compared to other anime. After I watched it I realized how amazing it was, and now it's my absolute favorite series, but before that could happen I had to first give up any misconceived notion I had if what One Piece was.
There's also the interesting theory that Toonami viewers simply like things similar to Bleach/Naruto because it "feels more Japanese" than One Piece; what with them being about shinigami, ninjas, and pirates respectively, though this is mere conjecture with no solid proof.
-
Who cares if they don't.
Its on TV and its always getting good sales, n views. Not to mention manga sales improving in the US.
-
We shouldn't worry if OP will be removed in the future? Is Toonami on AS in it for the long run? Will this Toonami go on for more than a decade?
-
I want One Piece to air both on Toonami and Vortexx. I know it sounds crazy but I do think it can work.
-
We shouldn't worry if OP will be removed in the future? Is Toonami on AS in it for the long run? Will this Toonami go on for more than a decade?
There's no reason to worry about that scenario. "One Piece" and the Toonami block itself are doing well, and there's no indication at the moment that it will change for the worse.
And hey, maybe Toonami won't be around a decade from now. Hell, with the increasing popularity of online streaming the landscape of cable television might change completely. But it's the shows themselves that matter, not the way they're distributed. As long as "One Piece" is available for the masses in one form or another, that's fine.
-
TV airing gets casual exposure and a new audience. Net streaming only gets the people already interested. Vast difference there.
-
@RobbyBevard:
TV airing gets casual exposure and a new audience. Net streaming only gets the people already interested. Vast difference there.
True, but streaming is starting having a comparable effect on anime, at least as indicated by this VIZ interview:
http://www.icv2.com/articles/news/28013.html
Has streaming passed TV in importance?
I think so. Right now that’s where most of it lives. Cartoon Network took a lot of it off cable television, so everyone switched to streaming for distribution and that’s where everyone found it. As far as a lift in sales I don’t think it really matters if it’s television or streaming online, we see the same type of lift in manga sales. -
Sorry Firecrouch, but I agree with Robby here. Not that you are entirely wrong. Things are going in that direction but its going to take a while to get there.

Can you guys please tell me what episode number this was for One Piece? I DVR the series but my cable box has been acting screwed up lately and I can't really watch this channel. And on that note, can you also tell me what episode number it was for Naruto Shippuden as well?

One Piece was on episode 246. Not sure about Shippuden.

Did we ever get a conclusive reason why OP was removed from "Network" originally? I can only assume its because a new regime was taking over and didn't want anime anymore instead of "the ratings were bad" reason. If the ratings were bad then why would they be trying again on Adult Swim Toonami?

As far as why they're trying again on adult swim, well, there's plenty of basic reasons why. For now I'll just say that that was years ago and adult swim isn't the same as Cartoon Network.

I feel like One Piece's performance on Toonami begins now that the Lucci reveal has happened and were in its best episodes of Water 7, so I would relax and wait until Enies Lobby finishes to judge One Piece performance after being off television for years, When Merry's funeral airs it'll be safe to asses the entire arcs standing on Toonami, In my opinion those unlucky two weeks were the viewers suffering from Davy Back syndrome, so they must of prejudged the series and didn't think the series was gonna get any better.

OP will be moved to 1:30 am time slot starting May 3 (because Titans are coming!) http://www.funimation.com/blog/2014/04/12/funimation-series-attack-on-titan-to-air-on-toonami-block
http://toonami.tumblr.com/post/82537856899/attack-on-titan-is-coming-may-3rd-at -
Fuck.
I mean, I'm glad AoT is coming to the block, that's HUGE (heh) news…
But I really didn't want One Piece to move any later then it already is. :-(
-
Shit. This doesn't really help One Piece since it barely brings in a million every so often, but considering AOT's massive popularity it'll really help Toonami overall which is fantastic.
I don't know how to feel about this. It's great yet kinda crappy news at the same time. I guess we'll just have to see how things work out.
-
Well, in their defense, EVERYTHING besides Bleach was moved down a slot, at least.
Dandy starts new episodes in July. Unless they manage to get 11:00, I suspect it'll push Bleach down to 12:30… OR... They'll swap AoT around with it.
Still, looks like One Piece isn't gonna head the block anytime soon.
-
Naruto & One Piece aren't doomed at 1am long term, would make no sense, but it makes total sense now because Titan is fanboyed and Toonami just wanted it as fast as possible b4 Summer began, so since 11pm wasn't available just yet, it seemed they just injected it in the Block to make it work, but long term I see us getting 11pm at least and Naruto & One Piece taking the lead down the line, but they probably want to keep high viewship as long as possible through the night for summer, so the Narutards are forced to stay up later just like the rest of us
-
This isn't as bad as it's being made out to be. Even though One Piece fluctuates between a million views every few weeks, it still does better than all of the other shows that air after it. The ratings may suffer a bit more once Titan starts airing, but that's to be expected since it'll be shown later in the night. The worst case scenario would then be that One Piece gets moved down further in the block because Blue Exorcist or Black Lagoon suddenly rise in viewership.
I know it sucks that our favorite show has been moved to a later time slot, but that's just how its gotta be I guess. Hopefully Attack on Titan brings in enough positive ratings to get the block extended another half hour. But in the meantime, we just have to keep on watching.

Bleach, Dandy, & Titan are all finishing there run in the same year, this year in the October range of 2014, This scenario there trying to pull is a once in a lifetime chance because Bleach & Dandy are gonna be goners b4 they know it, so I imagine there trying to make the most of this scenario and get really high numbers for the Summertime, so because Naruto is payin' the price as well I don't we should see this as them poking fun at One Piece, if this bodes well me might get 11pm hour this year and eventually One Piece & Naruto will end up becoming the premiere shows, once those other 3 shows end in October, So thats my thoughts on this, there taking advantage of the summertime hype, and in order for them to take advantage of that One Piece has to take a backseat for now at 1:30, I'm sure this is temporary so I'd say we just have to be patient, luckily OP isn't in Enies Lobby until later in the year, and luckily its such a long arc, all the setup episodes & train fights will knock out while its temporarily at 1:30 I'm sure
-
Yeah, there's no way Toonami would air Attack on Titan at a later hour. It was just natural that OP get bumped. Nothing to worry about, folks.

At least the show is getting exposure. I looked at the funimation one piece dub for some one piece videos on youtube and they used to have low views a few years ago. Now they have lots of views! As long as Toonami is alive I think the show will do alright right?

To showcase that One Piece is actually winning timeslots, and those ages are watching it for that specific night, its just emulating how the night performed in great detail

Yea and I think when Titan comes, its possible for us to get a million viewers through Black Lagoon, we basically need to wait a couple years so that Naruto & One Piece can become like Bleach on Toonami, thriving on the Block for years and then they'll be stable, Toonami's in its growing stages and Naruto just showed up this year & OP came back in 2013 after bein off air for like 5 years, so we pretty much have to take it week by week, and let One Piece thrive as years pass, eventually Five years from now when they begin airing Marineford, One Piece will become one of the most popular shows on Toonami after airing its best arcs and being on the block for a LONG period of time, its only been like half a year so we have to play the waiting game unfortunately, I'm interested in whats gonna happen after Dandy, Bleach, and Titan end all at once in October
-
Wow, am I reading this right? Dandy actually lost to Bleach? It seems you can always count on Bleach to pull in at least a million. The only time it seems to under-perform is when everything else under-performs too. Otherwise it's always right on up there at first or second place.
I gotta say, Bleach has some surprisingly strong support here in America. I would've thought Naruto was the ultimate top dog over here for sure, but I guess was wrong. I'm aware that it probably has a lot to do with it's early time slot, but even then it still beat out Dandy which comes on before it.

Not bad just not spectacular especially amongst viewers who hadn't been paying attention to the series 9 to 13 seasons beforehand. Maybe I'm just a bit jaded but you're not the first or the last person to express the idea of One Piece specifically the anime becoming popular here in the states despite all the obstacles in place making such a thing difficult.

Anything could happen. Honestly episode content hasn't really affected it seeing how its ratings are up and down even with action packed episodes. I really wouldn't bank on a particular arc spiking up ratings. Rather, we can hope that more people just get into it in general. Hopefully by getting an earlier timeslot, but this move to 1:30am isnt gonna help things.
As for Bleach beating SD…. well, Dandy just started reruns so that's probably why. That being said, Bleach has a tremendous fan base here. It also helps that its a dub premiere, ahead of its DVD releases. Both Naruto and OP are behind, on tv.

I think ur forgetting, OP been off air for 5 years, had a 4kids dub and been relatively obscure for awhile, i bet more than half the viewers on Toonami don't realize stuff like Jet Gattling is coming up, so they watch casually out of interest and then don't watch certain weeks, plus the Davy Back is probe still stuck in there minds. OP at 1:30 I think isn't a bad thing, and isn't permanent, I highly doubt Demarco's gonna let OP drown at 1:30 for the next 15 years OP is going to exist on Toonami, I bet it'll be back once Dandy, Bleach or Titan finish up, it only moved down because they really wanted Titan as fast as possible b4 Summer starts, lol were suffering from in the moment emotions,
I remember back in the day people never thought OP would even be on air again, and now its back so I think we should think more logically and long term rather than with our in the moment anger when something bad happens to our favorite series, theres no use in us getting all emotional after every potential temporary decision, at the end of the day we just have to relax and wait and see what happens later in the year, lol watch when OP gets its spot back later on everybody's gonna be so relieved, so we just need to be patient, everything about the One Piece series involves patience anyway, we got through Fishman Island, I think we can get through this small bump in the road lol.

I still have alot of faith that Dandy S2 is gonna snag that 11 spot, I hope Titan blows up so that Adult Swim can't ignore Toonami anymore, and gives the slot to them alrdy, and then we can finally have some versatiliy and OP won't have to deal with clutter with the timeslots
-
The general viewer are not the most patient of people and prefer to have their action "NOW NOW NOW" before they get disinterested…. but we'll see how it plays out. Im just saying episode content doesnt always dictate good ratings... otherwise ths Luffy U sopp fight shoulda gotten huge numbers, and the CP9 reveal wouldn't have underperformed.
