So am I the only one who thinks diamanté used haki against Rebecca.
Chapter 739: Captain

I might have missed something, but Thunder Soldier cant be the only Toy without a contract? I mean, we saw other Toys act out in the begining of the arc, wich was refered to "The Human Affliction" i think?
Assuming their contract is the same as the others then they're bound to not harm people and obey the orders of the family. Obviously some of them aren't bound to work all the time, only at night, so they aren't disobeying orders, nor are they harming anybody.
-
I find it seriously funny how so many people hate Rebecca. I'll take a shot here and guess that the people who hate her are people who fear her possibly joining the crew.. or peeps who think strength = well-written character/being relevant.
On a related topic, I been calling this in my head/reddit since the Usoland lie but this arc will be Usopp's time to shine and will do Norland proud (Too many relations to be a coincidence = Lies/Bravery/Explorer/Plants/Fashion Sense[Stripes]). He's negative as hell - which directly contradicts one of his dream (/definition) to be brave but we all know how reliable he is when he has his sh*t together (Vs Luffy/As Sogeking).
Oh also, can someone help me with something? Has it been said if "bronze" really what it says/been said? (cause ugh Toei).
I don't particuarly dislike Rebecca myself, but I can see why other people do.
It's not out of fear of her joining the crew, and it's not because of lack of strength.
People dislike her because the damsel in distress character has been done to death by this point.
The fans who read One Piece primarily for the fights feel like she's essentially stealing a spot in the finals that could go to someone better suited.
Some people are just pissed off at her being a nami clone lol.
-
Wait.. Rebecca has a blunt sword?
I thought she was trying to kill Luffy that time?
! Hm.. funny.
-
Why does Rebecca have a blunt sword?
Maybe she does a circus act on the side and has to swallow it?
Same reason Riku as Ricky had it. Speed is the way/technique of the Riku family, but the blunt sword/no killing was the way of the Colosseum before Doflamingo came, iirc.
-
I hope Usopp will defeat Trebol by setting fire to him.
-
Surprised that, for a pretty decent, even nice chapter, people are flipping their shit so incredibly much.
Rebecca used a dull blade, what did she pretend to do? I don't know, maybe the same thing King Riku fucking pretended to do in the EXACT SAME IDENTICAL scenario? No one said a thing back then. Good.
Chapter was ONLY the Kyros reveal? Hmm, not exactly? In fact, we probably got the best character moment for Rebecca and Toy Soldier in the entire arc, and didn't you guys want character development? Now you don't? Good.
You think the pace was too frantic, for the past two weeks Oda has slowed it down and decided to make things a bit slower and more developed? Boring, nothing happens, the plot doesn't advance, Dressrosa is too slow moving. Good.
Kyros = Toy Soldier is NOT a plot twist. It's a reveal that Oda has been hinting for the entire fucking arc. You didnt' get surprised by the reveal? But of couse you didn't, cause Oda dropped about 798 hints at it before finally setting it in stone.
Also, yeah, the whole Leo speech was a mirrored scene from Usopp's praising of Luffy during Punk Hazard. And who was Leo interacting with during this speech? Usopp, of course.
That being said, of course, I have complaints: Sugar just. . ."forgot" to say the contract with freaking Kyros, the most dangerous man in the entire island? Hmm. Veeeery logical indeed. I hope, as Aohige "implied" in the spoilers section, that there's something else in there. Like, she chocked on a fucking grape the moment she was about to seal the deal and he used the chance to run away. Much better than, setting the mission before the invasion began to, obviously, take the most dangerous element in Dressrosa out of the way, she actually goes and forgets the most crucial part. . .
Also, Sabo sending Barto to defend Rebecca makes little to no sense. They don't even share the weakest of emotional links, why does he care about her well-being if she's a near unknown to him?
On the other hand, hey, Rebecca got her head smashed with a mace!! Wasn't 80% of the forum complaining that they wanted a pretty girl to be brutally hurt, and that it was incredibly sexist that it didn't happen? Well, here you have it. Too bad now the girl in question is slightly incapacitated from the hit and is helplessly lying on the floor as a result. Oops, that's even more sexist, isn't it? Now we wish she was still the "untouched phantom princess" of the Colosseum who noone ever managed to even injure, right?
Well, all in all, yeah, there were a few controversial moments in this chapter, but the wave of complaints are totally uncalled for.
Oh, and the jump around this chapter was, in fact, very smart on Oda's part. In fact, it was a focused chapter that changed points of view BUT flowed from character to character by following the same narrative point, and coming full circle at the end of the chapter.
That makes almost 2 and a half chapters almost entirely center on the Usopp/Robin situation, which is pretty good imho.
-
im agree with you all's 'what if' clause that luffy could be wiped by diamante. My turn, im thinking what if hakuba didnt awake, so we can see her real so-called-agilty can be easily get beaten by cavendish?
In fact, luffy can beat many person that rebecca cant do. again, you embarrased rebecca for comparing her with luffy.survive and get lucky is two different thing, bud.
Rebecca dodged Hakuba, that Oda sending a message that Rebecca is not weak. Not strong, but not that weak either. Hakuba was only a cheap way to end the block really quickly.
I'm not saying that Rebecca is superman or some shit, but stop whining that Rebecca can't defeat Diamante, who some people thought could actually be the arc boss. -
I don't particuarly dislike Rebecca myself, but I can see why other people do.

Some people are just pissed off at her being a nami clone lol.
Does that go for kids and old people too? Personally I take it case by case. Rebecca definitely is underwhelming though but pretty much everything about her is explained.. why hate her unless there's a reason that conflicts with your expectations no? Oh and yeah I can see that Nami clone thing lol
-
Stand at exit, fire a mega flamestar. And then Trebol just blew up the entire harbor with Sugar in it.
-
Rebecca used a dull blade, what did she pretend to do? I don't know, maybe the same thing King Riku fucking pretended to do in the EXACT SAME IDENTICAL scenario? No one said a thing back then. Good.
They did say something. People were bitching about how stupid King Riku was.
-
I'm sorry guys but I have to say it loud and clear.
Toy Soldier for NN. -
Same reason Riku as Ricky had it. Speed is the way/technique of the Riku family, but the blunt sword/no killing was the way of the Colosseum before Doflamingo came, iirc.
It's a joke! do I have to ask you to pull my finger and fart? or would a sarcasm sign help? face-palm
-
They did say something. People were bitching about how stupid King Riku was.
It was a small fuss then, cause I hardly remember people flipping their shit that much.
Also, seeing how her grandpa fought the exact same way, can't we just put 1 + 1 togheter and think "it must be a family thingie"? Or the "honorable way" of the old colosseum days?
-

! http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-7-_MQuT-Wdg/Uic9pfHEpwI/AAAAAAAAHiw/8pCTl6HdeIo/018.png?imgmax=3000Hm.. funny.
For this, there are various factors that can explain it. One, she probably didn't actually intend to try and kill Luffy when she led him there, but her friends in the cage gave her the opportunity and she owes more to them than she does to Luffy. Two, she used a thrust, and we know full well that even a blunt object can pierce if it's moving fast enough (see Shigan), which with Rebecca we can assume it is. Remember she doesn't know Luffy's made of rubber. And as Soldier-san and Ricky showed, being hit with a blunt object (like with the slash after Luffy dodged her thrust and the attack she used on Diamante in this chapter) will still do damage. Luffy dodged and Diamante blocked it with his cape.
-
It was a small fuss then, cause I hardly remember people flipping their shit that much.
Sounds like a subjective statement to me.
-
They did say something. People were bitching about how stupid King Riku was.
Honestly…
While I'm not a biggest fan of pacifism, there is argument to be made for not fighting, you know?
Most normal people find themselfs at a loss when it comes to spilling blood. Is there a reason why Rebecca should be emotionless killer?
-
Also, Sabo sending Barto to defend Rebecca makes little to no sense. They don't even share the weakest of emotional links, why does he care about her well-being if she's a near unknown to him?
Perhaps it's related to her being part of the previous royalty in the country? It's a possibility Sabo is doing that as part of his mission to figure out what exactly is going on with Dressrosa
-
Sounds like a subjective statement to me.
Ok, since I have free time, I'll go and re-read the chapter 709 discussion thread.
Be back in a couple hours.
-
I will say that my biggest issue with this arc is that there is way too little of Doflamingo in it, and he acts way too passive. The setup is basicly "Doflamingo did a bunch of bad stuff 10 years ago, but now he is just hiding inside his castle, go get him!".
-
Interesting sidenote: they talked about, soldier san having to take some kind of shot directly at Flamingo as soon as Leo and co. take out Sugar. So i am tinking that the toy soldier/kyros has some special attack (like the king punch?) or some special kind of weapon that is dangerous for Doflamingo. They worked on this plan for a long time. We also dont know, what the toyification process does to your power level. Maybe you get much weaker becoming a toy and Kyros is a real beast. We still know to little but i dont think Kyros is fodder even though he got his ass handed to him by Lao G.
-

Nothing small about it, people on here were having a right rant about how stupid his fighting style and idea's are. I should know I was one of them.
-

Toy Soldier for NN.I'm with you on this.
-

Hmm, that could be it, but still a bit weird to me.

Now, that's a legitimate complaint. Still, I think we'll have our Dofla fix come the end of the arc. And Law's flashback. And the aftermath.
But, yeah, needs moar Dofla. Though we've still had the best possible Dofla scenes ever, so. . .
-
@Al!naJames:
You can have anything as a weapon as long as you can operate it as one. Using dull sword is the opposite of it, it's like "heeeeeeeeey, did you think I was here to fight? JUST KIDDING!!!"
Blunt Sword is the ex-Dofalmingo Dressrosa coliseums weapon. Did we forget that King Riku did use a Blunt sword as well?! Given that she fights the same fighting style as the Riku family and that she doesn't like to hurt other people is obviously that she would use the Blunt sword as well.
Note that a person can die with a Bamboo/Wood Sword. While it doesn't cut, the impact is basically the same as an Hammer. That was obviously what she was trying to do, to knock out, Diamante.
-

The fact that he's the first person turned into toy made him Dofla's number 1 biggest threat for his plan at that time…
Maybe he's a real beast before he lose his leg... -
I think the biggest problem with this chapter is that it relied on people doing stupid things to work, like Trebòl throwing ships at Sugar and blowing up things while next to her, Leo believing Trebòl, Rebecca attacking with a blunt sword and Sugar conveniently forgetting to bind the TS into a contract.
-
The Issue here is that if Rebecca refuses to properly hurt anyone even including Doflas Executive Officers because of her ethics, what is she planning to do with the mera mera no mi?
It was well showed that she trying to hurt Diamante. She never attacked anybody, but to Diamante she took the initiative!
-

yeah he did nothing, apart nearly killing law and trying to murder half of the strawhats:wassat:

This post is deleted!

Becca getting a power up over a mother she barely knew will be worse
She barely knew?! It was showed that she knew very well her mother.

I find that to be his most enjoyable trait. He has an established hierarchy that does his dirty work for him.
He doesn't micromanage shit like Croc did. His best men are trusted to take care of their assignments.

I don't remember anyone trying to cut anything with a bamboo stick, a pipe or a jutte.
At least it looked like she was going for a cutting attack. It was clumsily made to connect Becca's fighting style with king Riku's,
When you attack a leg with a staff/pipe/hammer is your intention to cut the other person leg? No, is to knock him out, or at least for him to loose balance.

Well my little summary… The pacing was a bit slow but maybe because everyone predicted already that Toy Soldier = Kyros.
Anyway... Trebol is a real monster with his fruit and I will still say... No way he will be beaten by Robin or Usopp. Usopp will take out Sugar after the little speech of Leo... And he showed to be smart as well... Some people say he is an idiot standing next to the matched up liquid but I bet... As in CC case that it doesn't effect him and he protected Sugar as well cuz of this. It won't be a weakness
I loved the way Diamante has spoken to Rebecca but it seems soon she will go all out... And Barto will protect her from attacks, cuz it is clear as hell that Diamante is out of her league... Nice from Sabo as well... So maybe he lets her win for the sake of the country in exchange for the Mera Mera... He do not give a damn about the title... And in this way the hated gladiator of the cursed bloodline named Rebecca will be the new peoples champion... And the RA will have some role in it as well.
That Rebecca is just 16 is a bit of a suprise but nothing bad... But she for sure looks older... But well real life girls look way more mature in as 10 years ago
-
To be honest, I think the chances of Usopp beating him are higher now. He still have his Fire Bird star, so maybe the flammability of the Beta Beta can be used against Trébol.
-
Wew.. too much for the "502 bad gateway"..
Not a bad Chapter i guess..
-
I'm hyped to see Usopp in action, hohoho.
-
Hmmm, this chapter … not much in it really, but it was pretty powerful nonetheless. Hopefully this will cue Usopp+Robin comeback next chapter.

Well, it's not like other key antagonists have been much different? Other than in this case, it's the SH group (well, Law specifically) who are kicking everything off, rather than being antagonised by the bad guy first …
-
kyros most likely got turned into a toy during the sack of dressrosa 10 years ago. obviously that place was a chaos and dangerous. sugar most likely only able to turn him into a toy before retreating again back to safety.
that, and i'm pretty sure kyros is known for his speed
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
I couldn't access the forums all morning, I guess it was a sign that most of the thread I wanted to read was full of takto and darkmynja fucking CRAP
-
What's that kissmanga link in the first post supposed to be? Some new and capable group, replacing our fallen savior?
-
What about Kinemon vs Trebol?
Trebol is able to match up his liquid and seems to not give a damn about it as some people speculate to be a weakness.
So what if Kinemon will fight him? Kinemon not only can create fire but cut fire as well… So it would be perfect and we still need to see his DF powers in a real fight
-
I think he's saying that it has nothing to do with them living out in the countryside. Obviously him getting turned into a toy is why nobody remembers him. But if that were the end of the story, then Rebecca's memories would have her and her mother living in the castle without him, because Scarlet is the one who was related to the king.
Scarlet being related to the king is like three month old news. The point I was making was that a princess of a kingdom had a daughter, and nobody, not even the princess herself, knows who the father is.
-
Well idk
I didnt like this chapter.
I didnt like the entire, she forgot to make a contract with the strongest toy Kyros.
I didnt like the fact that Usopp is once again cowardly as hell and wants to abandon the "ship" or at least get away.
I didnt like that we are about to see Diamante explaining to Rebbeca about how her mother was killed to ignite her will, or some poo like that…
I didn't like the fact that entire chapter was dedicated to letting us know they are betting it all on one legged soldier because he is Kyros and had to show him get kicked around for 10 pages and make a run for it to make it all the more sympathetic or something.I did like the bit about the ship and the quick chat between the little guys and Trebol who made them tell about Usopp and One Legged soldier.
All and all meh from my perspective, hope others enjoyed it more
I didn't care for the chapter because the characters are flawed.
This entire fucking thread. I like Rebecca. I like that she is a flawed character. She's not physically strong, but she is strong-willed and finally wanted to stand up to Doflamingo. She's emotional, even mean to her father, but she doesn't know that. I like her. To hell with stoics Mihawk or Law.
To hell with physical strength and fights being a measurement for good characterization. I can understand why she acted that way, same way I understand why Vivi acted like she did. -
I thought the chapter was just fine. The gullibility of the Tontatta never fails to amuse, and things have really gotten down to the wire with all of those little guys captured as well. It's all up to Usopp and Robin now since all of those captured Tontatta will likely be turned into toys in short order and be ordered to kill "Usoland" since Sugar and Trebol still don't know who the deuce that is or what he looks like. And who knows if the tababasco ball will even come into play anymore.
I enjoyed more of the time spent developing the Toy Soldier (Kryos) and Rebecca as well, and the transitions between them were well executed. Seems like "SOP" depends on Kryos to enter Doflomingo's chamber, get transformed back into a human, and whoop his ass. However, I'm a bit doubtful if he could even come close to defeating him so there might be more to the plan.
Yes, obviously Sabo's mission on the island is the help the remnants of the royal family one way or another. So his request to air Rebecca is hardly a surprise. Looks like all 3 will be tag-teaming Diamante from here on out.
-
That was such a good chapter. Loved it when naruto…
-
Yeah… and removing oxygen is an ability from...?
I don't think I need to repeat what your original wording was.
Luffy fainted from the sideffect of CC's devil fruit, not from the fruit power itself. He removed oxygen in an area around himself, which rendered Luffy unable to breathe and collapse. Something like that would make even the strongest fighter in the world faint. Because, no matter how strong your Haki is, you still need an air to breathe. I could compare it to Aokiji causing a climate change on an island during a fight and making people who weren't involved in fighting die of hypothermia. Or Crocodile causing a draught, making people die of dehydration. No Haki or combat prowess will make you survive the lack of basic human necessities.
But regarding original topic of discussion, it was hinted that strong enough Haki can help resist devil fruit effects. Otherwise Smoker wouldn't have told Tashigi her Haki isn't strong enough to fight Law and Vergo wouldn't have walked toward Law all coated in hardening expecting Law couldn't hurt him.
Let's be clear, I hate it, but that's what the implication is. -
Well the tower is gone right now. And Sugar will go down. Likes of Don Chinjao and Cavendish will be free. That's it for Trebol.
-
I bet if Oda introduced a female character who is 100% independent, high-ranked, won every fight she was in and was never wrong, people would call that excellent characterization only based on the fact that she won fights.
-
16 characters of whatever
